Szmodics

Pirate recruiting [3d6] = 13 (that's 5 folk maximum as retainers).

Szmodics bellows a Haldanian curse at the Iberian sailors, something about turning their bones into clogs and flesh into shark food. He fires another crossbow bolt at a sailor, Light crossbow short range [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2 , critically hitting him even without the added blessing of the bagpipes. He waves his longsword and urges the group of folk he loaded a cannon with to follow him across and make a sweep of the opposing decks.

He attacks any grenadiers or Iberian sailors in his path. Longsword melee[1d20+2] = 10+2 = 12 [1d8+1] = 3+1 = 4
His followers attack alongside him. Fellow pirates to hit [1d20] = 2 [1d20] = 19 [1d20] = 19 [1d20] = 14 [1d20] = 9

Zoggrot grabs a rope and swings across the breach, shouting the ancient rallying cry of his ancestors:

"Yeeaaaarrrrggghh!"

Charisma check (10): [3d6-2] = 11-2 = 9
4 follow.

Raising his cutlass in one hand and a boarding axe in the other, he lays into his enemies with a flurry of flashing steel.

Cutlass (THAC0 20): [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12. Dmg: [1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7/[1d8+3] = 4+3 = 7 (SM/L)
Boarding axe (THAC0 20): [1d20-1] = 13-1 = 12. Dmg: [1d6+3] = 2+3 = 5/[1d4+3] = 2+3 = 5 (SM/L)

Cutlass/Axe: [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13 [1d8+3] = 1+3 = 4, [1d20-1] = 9-1 = 8 [1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7

Followers: [1d20] = 14 [1d20] = 11 [1d20] = 11 [1d20] = 6
Followers: [1d20] = 16 [1d20] = 13 [1d20] = 13 [1d20] = 8

The above rolls do not include +1/+1 for being on the deck and +1 if he can stand the bagpipe noise (how do we determine that?). Rolls do include -2 to the off-hand for two-weapon fighting.

Understandably, none of the other pirates follow the mage.
Normal CHR Check [3d6] = 13

Siggard is glad that he didn't kill any of his crew mates with his badly failed new magic. He is also glad to see the captain jump up after drinking Iggways potion. He isn't sure if Lazarus is thinking clearly, but he knows he must follow the orders given him. He nods knowingly at Gin, hoping he will have his back if anything goes really bad, then answers the captain.

"Yes Sir! Right away, Sir!"

Seeing the other brave recruits swinging over and rushing the enemy, the wizard again wonders what in the hells he is doing out here. He is no swashbuckling buccaneer, with nerves of iron and limitless bravery like the others. He inhales deeply and chases after the others boarding the San Roque. Staying safely behind them as they advance, he weaves and dodges through the wreckage and dead bodies, heading towards the captains cabin. He tries to spot his target through the smoke and carnage, whistling for Face to get close, just in case.

If he must, he uses his pistol to defend himself or his friends as he creeps towards his prize.

Pistol Attack [1d20] = 8 Damage [2d4] = 2

If he can find a secure place to reload both guns, he does that as the others plow through their frontal defenses.

"Stay close, Gin! I can't see a damn thing through this fog of battle! Can you see their captain anywhere on deck?"

Just like their escape from the native village, it is soon clear who the real hero of the pair is when VdP rushes in wielding crossbow and cutlass.

Random d20 [1d20] = 17

Random d20 [1d20] = 16

Iggway remains on board for now...the Captain seems to be not himself yet, but alive! Iggway gets back to work, she looks for the last Maester and casts Magic Missile on him. She locks eyes with him and screams... You fool, you will no longer feel the beat of your heart! Yes, soon come!!!!

Iggway makes certain the Cap'n is still up and then she prepares to board the ship. She'll swing her Staff at any enemy in her way.

Rexlin

Seeing the ship drawn near, Rexlin cannot wait to board and wet his blade. He cries out in Gaulese once more, with a murderous look in his eyes, "CUILLÈRE!!!"

CHA Check (6+1 Notoriety) [3d6] = 8

He charges over the rails to the enemy ship and is surprised to see when only Fishy is with him, but then grins. Why not? He then proceeds to hack and slash his way across the deck, hunting first to see if there are any of those Holy Spellcasters and if not, he will make his way after Siggard. The willy elf always seems to find the fun and the glory, so why not see what will find him this time.

To Hit [1d20] = 18 DMG [1d8] = 3

Fishy (Out of water apparently) :
Fishy with Cutlass [1d20] = 3 DMG [1d8] = 4
Fishy with Dagger[1d20] = 4 DMG [1d4] = 1

Rexlin grins feeling his first blow connect as they move along the deck but is quickly worried that Fishy may be a bit less martially trained.

None of the rolls include any kind of bonuses for the bless spell or the Pipes, since I was also unclear about how to tell if they affected us or not and whether they stacked together for our rolls. I am thinking that if we are on deck it is +2 to hit and +1 to damage, correct?

well done everybody

Sweep of the decks:

Szmodics and his motley crew run across the barque rails. Shooting one sailor straight through the eye and overwhelming a group of sailors who try to barricade themselves between the two masts, using the lifeboats as cover. That ship has sailed for them however as the men in McGregor tartans split both hulls and heads with boarding axes. Of the four Iberian sailors left, three make weak attacks, one stabs out a bloody cut and lifts a cargo grill trapdoor, descending from the fury in the San Roque hull. four vs Szmo [1d20] = 5 [1d20] = 2 [1d20] = 1 [1d20] = 17

Zoggrot yells a gluttural challenge and storms the deck, flashing his blades as much as his canines. The grenadiers loading cannon on the other side are cut down in hail of flesh tearing steel. Shattered limbs can't raise hands in surrender, Zoggrot's 'orcmen' run them through casting their bodies overboard. Several musket shots ping off the cannon bores around them as a gathered last stand of men, sheltered in the cabin section fire off in the group. four vs zog [1d20] = 18 [1d20] = 15 [1d20] = 15 [1d20] = 10. The random targeting misses Zoggrot but hits twice a man next to him, his skull shattered. 'Goldie' gets a leg wound, not too severe he limps on beside the half-orc, gold teeth reflecting from a grimace of pain in the sun.

Geoffrey does his 'tarzan' swing, and then begins to buckle his swash in the rigging. His 'troupe' follow launching themselves across the divide to entangle themselves in the sails and stab at exposed sailors. The men send several injured bodies crashing from the spars to the deck to join the dead and dying. Only a single sailor remains in the rigging, a tanned olive skinned Halfling with an eye patch and gold ringed ear lobe. He draws out a rapier blade and balancing finely on the rocking yard arms challenges Geoffrey to knock him off his perch. halfling swashbuckler [1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3 [1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8  (oh the plans to draw him into a duel fail miserably as the fumble cause the Halfling to miss his step and plunge to the deck.) Once again, Geoffrey remains 'king of the castle' claiming top spot in the rigging.

Charismatic Pocc, hails crew to follow him. He attacks the men behind the door and window to the cabins, taking them off guard as they try to reload their muskets. The men cannot even raise a pointy ward of bayonets to defend themselves and are brought into a deadly close combat by Pocc's charge. Roger and Gaston coil around Pocc's neck and shoulders hissing menacingly and striking at exposed fingers and hands which grapple with the druid. The men clamber through the window frame and kick in the door. A heap of dead musketeers pile up though hindering them gaining full entrance. A few Iberian sailors escape behind a side door and begin to barricade themselves in, overturning bunks and tables to stop the blood thirsty drinking their life blood away. An ordained looking man in a scale cuirass and holding a rod commands the sailors, giving frantic orders. Before he shuts the door he points at one of Pocc's men who freezes motionless in his place. it allows him precious seconds to dodge behind the closing door. Beneath the heap of bodies is a trapdoor which opens to the lower berths.

Siggard wades through the debris of men, intent on seizing the San Roque's captain. He follows the mass of bodies clogging the doorway to the cabin. Behind him thankfully Van de Poel shoots and stabs sailors who struggle to rise, still gripping daggers to stab at passing legs. they struggle to rise no more, VdP ending their sojourn. You pass Elijah, he has his trident in one hand and is giving merciful last rites to the dying. He mutters something and wipes a silvery fluid across the face of Siggard in a striking war paint type slash."These Iberian dogs shall descend to these mistress. Fires and Abaddon await their mortal souls not the sweet comfort of the deep from which we evolved. lest you stand laddie on the cusp of committing your half-heathen soul to the diablos, a 'Ward' to save your flesh from the burning of powder and flame." (he casts Resist Fire upon you)

the barque cabin is similar in design to the gypsy ship with a small foyer and two doors leading off, one a larger Captain's room currently barricaded and another smaller side cabin.

Iggway challenges the last of the clerical figures, pointing him out and triggering her missiles of wrath. They strike unerringly and cause him to mistime his own incantations. She steps across to attack the figure alone but her swipe misses. before the cleric can attack back, a tattooed mountain runs him through with a cutlass, leaving him clutching spilled guts and a last uttered prayer for salvation. Fishy kicks over the kneeling priest and goes a looting with Rexlin.

so everyone makes it across the decks to assault the San Roque trading barque.

There are just a few Iberian sailors left on the top deck, futilely defending themselves between the two masts, surrounded on all sides. Another few men have barricaded themselves in the rear room. Sailors have fled below decks from the cargo steps, the square between the masts being a grill cover, allowing a little light and air below. The attack was bloody and remarkably swift, overwhelming the sailors with sheer weight of numbers and fighting prowess. The cleric on the deck clutches at his innards. He looks up at Iggway,"You tribal witch. A curse on your heathen blood and your ancestors.". It is well known that the theocratic ruled Iberian nation despises indigenous peoples and non-colonial races.

Holden plays a celebratory jig on the bagpipes. Elijah goes to 'assist' the dying on the stern deck.

I offer a similar deck plan so you can imagine where you character is.

1) stern castle, with rear cannon. Ships wheel manned by dying pirates, area littered with strewn corpses.

2) main deck, cannons on each side. Upturned jolly boat between masts used as final redoubt of Iberian sailors. It doubles as a cover for the cargo hull grill. The masts are stripped of sails, broken spars and torn sails flap uncontrollably. Geoffrey in the crows nest of the mainmast in the middle. McGregor men in the rigging only. Szmodics by the port side cannons, Zoggrot overrunning starboard cannons. Rex and Iggway near the foot of the staircase. Pocc and Siggard in room 4.

3) side cabin

4) no room, actually just a foyer with benches and cupboard armoury full of boarding pikes. Window view over the deck hull. A trapdoor with ladder descends below.

San Roque barque deck plan.png
San Roque barque deck plan.png (5.81 KiB) Viewed 3757 times
[/img]

5) barricaded room, remaining cleric and a few men inside, frantically guarding door.

6) below deck sailors berths and door to cargo hold

7) cargo hold with wide steps leading up to deck.

the step ladder from room 4 goes down to a wash sloshed room. Water leaks in from the ebb of the waves through the hole blasted in the rudder and rear hull by Rexlin. It is about ankle deep and seeps water slowly, almost a big bucket full every wave. It is dark below and the room is cluttered with hammocks and lockers.

the cargo steps drop steeply to a wide hull. It is dark also but you know men are hidden inside. Boxes and long thick curved poles line the floor, a thin passage way edges between the stacked cargo to the prow end either side of the foremast trunk.

everyone give me an action post and if attacking, two attacks plus a single roll for the men under you charismatic sway.

Szmodics

upon hearing the commotion in the cabins, Szmodics gathers his crewmates and decides to load one of the Iberian cannons and offers to drag it to face the barricade and blast it open for everyone.

cannon load and fire and damage [3d6] = 13 [1d20] = 1 [4d6] = 8

Rexlin & Fishy

Grins and looks at Fishy. He points to one of the cannons and then to the room where Siggard has the Cleric and his group cornered. "You thinkin' what I'ma thinkin'?" When Fishy grins and nods the two quickly grab one of the heavy cannons and muscle it over to the hallway motioning Siggard and his crew out of the way. "Move twiddly fingers!

He and Fishy load it with chain, and assuming their companions have enough sense to know a pair of madmen with a really big gun when they seem them, they will charge forward with a yell and ram it against the barricaded door.

Rex & Fishy to Load vs DEX (14) [3d6] = 12

LOL! You tell me Spearmint, is that Point Blank for a Canon?

"LISTEN UP YOU BLODDY IBERIAN BASTARDS!" Rexlin grins, finding this entire thing incredibly amusing. "DON'T GET AND WILD IDEAS OF WALKING AWAY FROM THIS! WE HAVE YOU COVERED!" He actually begins giggling with Fishy like a pair of young boys getting ready to give their school teacher a hotfoot. "Stop it!" he whispers a bit too loudly to Fishy as they try to stifle their giggles. "YOU CAN COME OUT LIKE CIVILIZED MEN, AND PARLEY WITH OUR GOOD CAPTAIN FOR MERCY, OR WE CAN RAM THIS SURPRISE YOU HEAR ROLLING UP TO YOUR DOOR, RIGHT UP YOUR PUCKERED ASSES!

As an aside to Fishy, Siggard, and Co. "They try anything, we'll just blow them out the back wall. If they surrender, we might do it anyway," he grins. There was something wrong about the way this Gauleman's mind worked...

Rexlin stands ready with the match lock in case of funny business...

Okay, joking aside, Rex will only fire if it looks like the Cleric and his men are going to try something. If it meets the DM's approval, I would like to have his firing the cannon as a readied action meeting that condition.

To Fire, no bonuses [1d20] = 14

Geoffrey will lead his men down to the cargo hold through the grill where they finished their deck battle.
Once down, he will try to quickly adjust to the darkened light.

Siggard lets the excitement of battle take control while trying very hard to seem as brave as the others. He stays out of the way of those firing cannons at the cabins, trying to summon his invisible helper to do some recon work again.

Casts Unseen Servant

He ties a red piece of cloth around his servants head area to show off the crews colors and then commands the thing to go below into the ankle deep water, hoping to "flush" out any would be ambushers. Once it goes down below, he motions for VdP to follow down the ladder by pointing into the hole and smiling wickedly.

VdP Attack Roll [1d20] = 8

The whole time, the mage reloads his pistols and prepares to follow the pair below decks to see what can be salvaged before the old girl sinks to the bottom. If he sees anybody trying to hurt his friends, He fires at them.

Pistol Attack [1d20] = 13 Damage [2d4] = 3

Iggway casts Light on the red bandanna Siggard's Unseen Servant is wearing. This will be done, before the rest of the party advances down into the depths of the ship. She believes this may cause the San Roque's crew to panic, especially when they see the red bandanna floating down the steps.

Szmodics and Rexlin both compete to see which of them can play 'the big bad wolf and blow down the door of the little piggy's house'. Both cannons roar to bring the initial assault to an explosive conclusion though with far different results.

Szmodics loads his Iberian six pounder cannon with some round shot. Maybe the cannon bore is blocked or broken by previous incoming shells, whatever the cause the bore explodes and within a deathly radius of 15'ft shrapnel, cast iron remnants and molten lead bearings slice through the air.

Rexlin and 'Fishy' fire their cannon at the barricaded door. It blows it apart, even sending splinters to stick out of the stern deck above. In the aftermath of the clearing smoke, two injured and bloodied Iberian sailors give themselves up to the mercy of the pirates. The last cleric, is defiantly clutching a carved wooden holy symbol, holding it tightly to his chest and muttering Iberian chants for protection and grace. He stumbles out half blinded, splinters pockmark his exposed blistered flesh. He has no weapon to hand and scraps of paper embers float in ashes around the blasted quarters. A fine and rich silken divan is smouldering with fiery embers and an inlaid mahogany desk now split asunder. Contents and trinkets are spread across the room and Pocc's crew of designer eye patch wearing raiders decide to cash in and loot further, grabbing handfuls of stuff to assess at their leisure. Pocc exits the side cabin, luckily shielded from the cannon fire. He declines to wear one of the exotic patches that they found under the halfling's bunk.

Iggway enhances the unseen servant, casting a divine light on the bandana that the valet wears. The summoned force of mage Siggard descends to the cargo hold below. It is only a few rungs of the ladder down when out of the corner of the comes some vicious large mastiff. The rusty red furred animal is quite large for a dog, with menacing glowing red eyes, a soot blackened mouth with coal dark canines and a snarling growl. It leaps up on its hind legs to tear and snatch at the red bandana, provoked almost like a bull in an arena. The creature grabs the cloth and burns it with some fiery breath. Surprised by the onslaught Siggard and Van de Poel both trigger their weapons but miss the beast which bounces off out of view. The light spell cloth fragments float like festive sparklers, partially illuminating the bunk room. Hammocks are swinging from hooks across the room and some wooden furniture clog the room. A small corridor leads off into the central cargo area.

Zoggrot and his henchmen make short work of the Iberian sailors on the deck. They drop weapons to surrender but are mercilessly gutted where they stand. The disembowelled cleric feebly clutching his wounds and crawling away is routinely shot in the head by Lazarus who targets him from the McGregor

Geoffrey leads his men two abreast into the decks below, following the fleeing sailor through the grill door and down some wide steps which descend into the cargo bay. It is also slowly flooding, the water reaching the bottom step. Debris, bodies among them litter the room. As Geoffrey takes the steps down a pistol shot rings out, striking into the deck above his head. Ib pistol fire [1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2 [2d4] = 4Raul and Ignato [1d20] = 14 [1d20] = 12 [1d6] = 5 [1d6] = 5 emerging from under some sail cloth, two sailors slash with their cutlasses and stab at the first two intruders. Geoffrey takes a deep wound to his thigh (-5hp)

and back to the fumble roll on Szmodics cannon fire... It is a good time to test out the effects of cannon blasts upon the characters and NPC's. Check out the 'Armour and Weapons' last notes for bonus -1 or -2 if applicable to the roll. Depends upon armour type and additional factors such as protection rings.

It takes Szmodics and his five crew three rounds to load and fire the cannon. Enough time for Geoffrey and his men to descend to the cargo hold as they narrated. However everyone else on the upper deck, Szmo and Co', Zoggrot and men, Holden and Iggway are within the blast radius. Each needs to make a hard [4d6] vs dex saving throw or take full damage from the blast (-8hp),successful saves equate to half damage(-4hp).Zoggrot in his bone armour gets a -1 bonus to the roll. Roll a separate [4d6] also for the men you have, one roll for the groups fate.

next actions please everyone.

cannon ball blast save: vs 15 dex [4d6] = 12
pirates saving throw dex vs cannon blast[4d6] = 10

Szmodics lights the wick to the cannon and instantly recognises something is amiss. he performs a 'drop and roll' trying to extinguish any sparks and molten lead sticking to him."Sorry guys!",he says to his injured crew mates. He will assist in helping the injured back in the medic galley on the McGregor's Revenge.

(-4hp) sheet adjusted.
