Rexlin "Devil's Scowl" Dupre

Gets right to work ignoring the threats of his superiors and concentrating one the task at hand. He is a whirl of activity shouting to his crewmates and leading by example, powder, wad, shot, ram, prime, aim - he focuses a keen eye down the sight of the canon, taking a deep breath as he holds the matchwick ready. His world goes silent and his eyes sees the ocean, then the ship, the the mast... only the mast... and where it will align with the sight. FIRE! When he hears the order he waits half a breath until he feels the prickle on the back of his neck, knowing the lead is right, and touches the match to the priming. WHAH-WOOOOOM!!!

Loading vs DEX (13) [3d6] = 10 FIRE! [1d20] = 18

Szmodics

cannon load and fire [3d6] = 10 [1d20] = 6

read the notes on combined gunnery skill points vs penalty for range, does Szmodics know the skill level of the crew he is loading with?

For his part in the teamwork, the Haldane pirate loads the cannon shot and primes the bore with skill but it seems his firing is off. He looks around at the other crews remembering Old Plighty telling that his wooden leg and Dogger the dwarfs wooden leg both came about by being cannon blasted. For effects sake, Szmodics shouts"Ooh aah!"in a Long John Silver way and goes about loading again, trying to dodge any grasping water elemental that seeks to claim him, fending them off with his sword if he needs to.

The water weirds, three summoned elemental spirals of angry stormy saline, continue to harass and menace the crew of the McGregor's Revenge.

The long writhing tentacle inches along the main mast spars trying to attach watery suckers to the legs of the unwary sailors. Geoffrey Blood skips out of the way swinging on a rope across to the port side jib. Cravat leans out of the Crows' Nest and stabs at the leeching tentacle with a sword, severing a section which dissipates into water droplets that splash like a tipped pale onto the sailors below. Dogger swings his axe like an executioner to sever the tentacle root, others jab frantically with daggers. You note that edged weapons, however hard they connect only do a minimal damage to the creature.

The serpent form bites again at the prone dwarf, clutching him in between fanged jaws and shaking him free of the deck ropes. One sailor clasping a cannon ball in his hands uses it to club the serpents head but too late finds that the water is not solid and clouts his comrade senseless as he follows through dropping the cannon ball on his head. A sickening crack is heard and the dwarf stays prone, blood and grey matter disgorging from his cracked skull. The blunt force trauma seems a more effective way to dispel the watery form of the summoned weird. The cannon crew club it further with nearby belaying pins. Halved in size it wriggles on the deck but grabs again at the foot of the dwarf and slithers in a waterfall cascade over the side with his prize. The dwarf fades quickly fades from view beneath the waves as the snake form coils once again in the maelstrom of waves and builds up a new mass of churning seawater.

The fist weird pounds the deck and charges, jabbing and undercutting watery punches into the boarding party. Seeking a knockout blow and to drag a helpless victim to a watery grave. Zoggrot proves no 'glass jaw' muppet, taking one on the chin and then following up with a routine of his own. The fist would 'tap out' of a ring fight, suffering a 'splashdown' from axe heads but it seems its own 'seconds in the corner' refresh it for another bout. The clerically summoned elemental begins to suck up more seawater to regenerate its fighting prowess. Iggway flails with her favoured carved heirloom but misses the thrashing arm of water. Iggway Carved club attack [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 [1d6] = 5

Folk hit by the weird forms suffer no damage except collateral, (falling from rigging, etc) but must save vs paralysis or be quickly dragged overboard.

Cannon crews exchange a long range of fire. Szmodic's crew fires too high, another fires too low. Rexlin and Dogger compete for top-gun spots, each sending an explosion of shrapnel and leaden grapeshot into the ranks of men running across the deck of the second vessel. The men on the Sierra Nevada duck for cover. Some duck too late, in the rigging none can duck at all. two sailors lose limbs, severed at knee or and elbow. One of the halberdiers is struck, his breastplate punctured and for a moment he stands his armour gleaming like a chromium pepper pot before trickles of blood run freely through each hole and he collapses to the floor. (Rexlin give me a [4d6] for the retrospective damage of your hit please.)

Rigging sailors perfecting their arts under pressure close the distance between the ships and mount a tack to hunt down their fleeing prey. In the few minutes between the weirds boarding the McGregor' and the initial exchange of fire the sloop carves through the waves and closes the distance between to her prey.

meanwhile at the prow...Siggard loads the Long Nine pounder cannon with a heavy cannon ball. the greasy ball slips into the bore and Holden inspires the loaders and Siggard with some encouraging verses and quotes from epic sea faring legends. It stops the early fumbling of the cannon fire as folk take a few extra seconds to check the calibration of the sights and Siggard lays a last palm on the bore muttering intoning mystical incantations. Van de Poel relights the wick and the fuse is struck.... Nothing initially happens, no boom, no bust. the two severed heads of the hag and the yuan-ti twist and turn on the end of the bowsprit to leer grinningly at the crew. The round shot cannon ball weakly rolls out of the bore, premature ejaculation comes to mind. followed by thick green sickly gas emerging from the cannon vent. It feels heavy and like a mist full of pea green sediment, rancid and sour. In the foggy vapour a rotten hags face forms, silent and ghostly. The mist floats to surround the crew and cause them to puke on the deck and roll around on their knees clutching at eyes and throat. Van de Poel tries to croak the words"Siggard!"but his mouth becomes as dry as a camels tail. It is only a mild momentary panic however as the mist vaporizes in the breeze. The first fruits of his arcane labours scoring one for the Hag, Captain Lazarus rouses the crew to load another marinated cannon ball with threats of hanging their heads in shame if the same happens again. You will have one pass to fire over the fleeing stern and keel of the San Roque as the sloop weaves in the ship to ship combat.

the way I look at this is firstly you close range with good sailing, then fire at long range, more good sailing gets you to mid range for cannons then further good sailing to short range and then you can close to boarding range. hope that progression makes sense.

next actions please, ideally I will update on again on Saturday.

Szmodics, Rexlin, Pocc, Siggard need a macro: Load vs dex check, to hit, damage [3d6] [1d20] [4d6] [3d6] damage for Siggard and state an action post in your reply. (carry on loading, help wounded, prepare a spell, etc)

Geoffrey give me an action post, a sailing vs dex check and an attack roll [3d6] [1d20] [weapon type]

Zoggrot and Iggway, the water weirds are reaching over the deck and thrashing about among the crew trying to cast folk over board. Give me an action post and make two attacks rolls please.

GEoffrey tries to stay focused on the sailing orders being belayed. sailing dex [3d6] = 14
He swats at the tentacles if they get near him again, but misses.

Szmodics

tries to be poetry in motion, ramming a cannon bore down the dampened bore and striking the wick.

cannon load and fire and damage [3d6] = 13 [1d20] = 9 [4d6] = 18

as an action post he will fire his crossbow, (normal bolt) at the growing serpent water weird gathering strength in the stormy sea water. Light crossbow short range [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2

Looking like an a-hole now, not really sure why he thought to man a cannon in the first place, Siggard continues "helping" the crew of the long guns.

(Dex 17) [3d6] = 11 Attack (+2?) [1d20] = 3  [4d6] = 23  :x [3d6] = 12

After failing for the second time, the mage decides that he has had enough. He gets away from the men that actually know what they are doing so his "talents" can be used elsewhere.

He readies his pistols and shoots at the water monster instead if it gets too close to him.

Rexlin "Devil's Scowl" Dupre

Roars as he sees their grapeshot riddle thr enemy crew like weaves on bread. Thr last thing that "Shiny" sees as he bleeds out is Rexlin throwing him a Gualdese salute.

[4d6] for the retrospective damage

The time for celebration already over, he sets to work as before, encouraging his men with his tipical colorful language, switching back and forth from common to Gauldese in his excitement, but never where instruction and communication is critical. Soon he is happily staring down the sights again as one of his crewmates hands him the matchwick again. The look in his eye is intense and unblinking as he times his shot once more, holding his breath just a moment out of instinct and habit from shooting his personal firearms when.... WAH-FOOOOOOOM!!!

Load vs dex (13) to hit, damage [3d6] = 10 [1d20] = 16 [4d6] = 11 [3d6] = 17

Iggway Commands the Water Weird to Stop...she stares at it for a moment to wait for its reaction. Then she yells to the crew, hit the Maesters wearing the chains, they're creating these abominable creatures!!!

If any creature comes close Iggway will attack:
Attack w/Staff [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12 Damage [1d6] = 6

Attack w/Staff [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13 Damage [1d6] = 3

Iggway calls out in authoritative utterance, beseeching the writhing water elemental to cease. The water weird fist points a single finger at the shaman and wags it. Iggway feels it is telling her off. Then the stormy wet hand makes a darting grab for her, the seawater tentacle tries to put a sucker on Zoggrot and the serpent begins to coil around the legs of Pocc.

water weird, serpent, tentacle, fist, [1d20] = 6[1d20] = 4[1d20] = 3

Zoggrot
gives a sucker punch of his own using his cutlass like a club and splaying the water into droplets. Iggway beats the hands back, rapping the fists knuckles.

Pocc put off by the snake form attacking him misfires the cannon. Interestingly the water weird snake forms two branches from its neck and mimics a two -headed snake and coils around the druid to squeeze him in a plume of churning water but the crew loading club the creature and it again dissipates and falls once more beneath the waves. All three elementals follow the sloop, reforming their mass within the maelstrom of waves swirling in the sea. For good measure Szmodics snips one sending a crossbow bolt into the centre of the form. The critical hit from the bolt does nothing except the bolt joins the spinning mass of water before ejecting out of the side with force and sticks into the forehead of the pirate face (Magic Mouth) caricature by the boarding steps. His cannon fire is less accurate falling 60'ft short of the Sierra Nevada

Geoffrey follows the sailing masters and pulls down the sails to half full. It tacks the sloop into an advantageous positions and once again the broadsides get exchanged between the vessels.

Rexlin labours on the deck like clockwork. Loading round shot cannonball. Despite the weight it is lifted and loaded, the bore primed and rammed. Rexlin adjusts the cannon frame elevation and strikes the wick on the Captain Lazarus's command of "Fire!" Thick smoke from the cannons cover the deck as the broadside is fired. The fleeing vessels split to tack away from the sloop, one to each lee of the wind. The Sierra Nevada is struck again as it turns, Rexlin's shot strikes high against the jib foremast, collapsing rigged spar arms and sending torn sails and exploding shrapnel among the assembled crew men. "Well I do declare, that mans' a right Dandy Pirate!" says Lazarus to the officers on deck pointing to the mountain loading in his fine fresh laundered crimson ruffled linen.

Dogger cannon fire medium range [1d20] = 9 [4d6] = 7

It is the only cannon ball to strike its intended target, the others being high wide and not very handsome. (You need a 12 to hit successfully!). One vessel slows to half speed as it turns away, trying to futilely put some distance between it and the avenging pirate sloop. The other merchant barque the San Roque, opens up it own broadside. With a penalty for the medium range the shot falls alarmingly wide of the main mast but lands on the deck by the officer cabin doors.

San Roque medium range [1d20] = 13 [1d20] = 10 [1d20] = 9
LOng Nine @ 600yards [1d20-5] = 13-5 = 8 damage [3d6] = 11
cannon ball damage [4d6] = 20

The damage is horrendous, the frames splinters into tatters and a huge gaping hole appears where the carved doors closed. The stairs one side are blown away and the officers, helmsman and nearby crew Rico and the Captain all dive for cover in extreme evasive action. saves, Rico Captain, Mr P, crew [4d6] = 12 [4d6] = 19 [4d6] = 12 [4d6] = 21

Siggards tries again with another shot. The accuracy needs a lot to be desired but the effect is to explode a huge detonation below the waves. Dolphins gratefully swallowing the unconscious shoal of Carib cod which float unconscious to the surface.

A misty green hags face looms like a thick pea green cloud will billows from the long nine prow cannon and blows across the deck. When the foggy soup dissipates you see a bloodied Rico solely manning the helm and Mr Perryman leaning over a more bloodied Captain Lazarus. The assembled crew on the stern castle are no more.

A roar goes up from across the ocean, carried on the foul scent of rotten methane. The McGregor's Revenge sloop has taken a serious hit but remains intact. Dogger shouts out 'reload and fire as cannon crew scuttle across the deck to fire from the portside cannons, one enemy vessel is debilitated and slowed the other turning to flee. You will be out of range of fire from the de-masted Sierra Nevada so can chase down the other vessel, the cleric crewed San Roque. The summoned elementals need time to reform and continue to pursue the sloop.
Next actions please.

Geoffrey instinctively feels what needs to happen next in order for the sloop to turn toward the fleeing boat who most likely is controlling the sea vermin. Sailing must be in his genes, as he makes easy work of the rigging. sailing dex [3d6] = 13

(if he needs to attack any newly summoned creatures :) please?)

Rexlin

Ol Devil's Scowl keeps at it, loading fast and focusing on his task. He is almost ready to begin aiming the cannon, the shot from the San Roque causes him to jerk and duck, and his match inadvertently touches the pan of the cannon and prematurely fires.

Load vs dex (13) to hit, damage [3d6] = 7 [1d20] = 7 [4d6] = 16

Rexlin looks at the smoking cannon wide eyed, taking a moment to process what happened even as he realizes they took a powerful hit. "damn..." As the action progresses he eyes the San Roque looking for a vulnerable spot to take out as much of the barque or its crew as possible.

Szmodics

Having much more fun on the pirate vessel than fishing for tilapia and Bluefin on his family's rickety sailing ship. He picks up a cannon ball and with the crew loads despite the constant barracking of the dwarf gunnery master Dogger. He hopes the injured Captain will survive better than getting a wooden leg for his troubles. He pulls forward the cannon frame and fires. cannon load and fire and damage [3d6] = 15 [1d20] = 15 [4d6] = 9,

This time seeing the cannon ball smash Iberian men and barque hull at the shortened range. (he presumes they are the hated Iberians by the barque names, would do no good hitting a Haldane vessel))

For an action he will load his crossbow and fire at a target in the opposing rigging. Light crossbow medium range [1d20] = 14 [1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4

Pocc The sea druid cast purify water on the area the strange creatures keep emerging from before he goes back to helping with the cannons Cannon Loading v DEX (14) [3d6] = 9 [1d20] = 20 to hit [4d6] = 19 dmg the powerful hit from Pocc's cannon fire causes mass destruction to the enemy's ship as body parts and shattered wood fly everywhere, the screams can be heard from the other ship as the destruction ensues.

Siggard gets himself as far away from the cannons as he can, assuming it is his attempt at magic that is mussing up their abilities to hit anything.

He moves behind whatever cover he can find and tries his new spell on something a little smaller. Using the same method as he did on the big cannon, he pulls out a tiny lead ball shot and starts casting his spell and loading his pistol.

Looking for a group of enemy that is clustered together on their deck, he waits until the ships get close again, close enough to take a shot at them with his magically enhanced bullet.

Of course, he soon realizes that he cant hit anything with a much smaller weapon either.

Pistol Attack [1d20] = 5 Damage [2d4] = 4

With his new magic now spent, the wizard rushes towards the pile of injured men and his captain, hoping he can help out in a different manner instead.

Iggway watches the devastation unfold around her...she sees the bloody Cap'n laying motionless on the deck. She runs to him...Mr Perryman, move let me in, I need to stop the bleeding, that is if I can... Then, Iggy remembers the Cap'n took one of the healing vials from the hidden vault, he must have it on him. She finds it hidden in a little bag under his tartan...she looks up and sees Siggard...Help me Siggs, tip the Cap'n head back, I'm gonna pour it down his throat, hurry!!!!

"Och Aye, what deep brown eyes ye have lassie, like my own bonnie girl. God bless ye for offering a dying man a last wee draft.! I saw the demon mistresses face a-blowing in the wind, calling my name, but where are the pipes a piping? Did we not rescue a bard from Eustatius to play a merry song and bring Gaelic terrors to the waves?", delirious and bloodied Captain Lazarus grogs down the offered healing potion taken from the Monte Verde infirmary vaults. Spilling much of it as Iggway forces it down his throat, eventually Lazarus spits blood and loose teeth upon the remains of the stern deck. He rises to his feet and bellows hoarse orders to his crew.

"You, golden boy, (Holden) fetch my pipes from my cabin and pipe us a war tune of auld, you men in the rigging, redress the sails and swing her aft Mr Rico. Fire them accursed cannons you scotch laden dogs and board her for bounty. Hagslayer, bring me the Iberian captains head. On or off his shoulders as you please.""

Still unsteady from a severe mauling from the cannon blast, Captain Lazarus orders the sloop to brace for impact.

Siggard takes a pistol shot, a green foul scent ejects with the lead ball. It poisons the air causing his eyes to water temporarily. The sea druid Pocc takes control of the churning waters, intoning a spell to cause the elementals to cease and return to their origins. His experience limits him to command over a single water weird which dissipates into a cloud of water droplets. The two angry water spouts remaining churn with rage and follow the tacking vessel. Pocc then assists the cannon crews and firing at the short range critically blasts the San Roque. In the cloud of smoke, splintered wood and torn sails, a ruff dressed head gets severed and Pocc helps one divine medium to go meet his maker. With his summoner's life gone, another weird is free of coercion and also submerges beneath the waves.

Mr Perryman sends a 'boom-stone' slingshot into the churning mass of the last, the sonic blast disrupting its form.

Elijah casts a Blessing of Poseidon on the crew and raise his trident, thrusting it at the Iberian barque. (Bless spell, +1 to hit and damage and saves for folk nearby).

Szmodics decimates the San Roque stern castle in a replica of the damage the sloop receives and Rexlin, aiming for the mainmast elevates the cannon at the wrong angle. A sideways lurch causes the cannon ball the shear off the vessels rudder and blasts a wicked hole into the hull, exposing the barques innards to the sea. Zoggrot compliments the cannon blasts with some explosive damage of his own, the leaden grape shot clearing the grenadiers from the opposing cannons.

Masterful sailing brings the sloop within range of a flurry of thrown grapnels and the San Roque is hauled close. Geoffrey Blood, is the first to swing over, cutting loose a jib rope and swinging across the closing chasm between the vessels. He lands by the smaller barques crows nest and beheads the sailor and in a swash buckling flourish severs the pennon from the top sail. The San Roque colours flutter away in the breeze.

Holden appears on deck encouraging the men with a bagpipe anthem. It sounds terrible and awesome at the same time, the deep resonance stirring blood lust and frenzy among the crew. Bow, bolt and bullet gets exchanged between crews and then the pirates engage to a bloody melee and flood the cargo ship.

The blasted San Roque is alongside, secured by numerous grapnel ropes. Shattered spars, planks, ropes and sails cover the decks. When the smoke clears you can hear only the cry of the dying.

okay if you want you can post a war cry, urging your fellow boarders to follow with you. Roll a 3d6 vs your charisma score. Success means that a number of pirates equal to your retainer ability will join with you and you have control over where they go and their attacks etc. Failure means you loot and pillage on your own.

Three areas of the San Roque:

a) The supposed captain's cabin area.
b) Clearing the decks of men.
c) Charging below decks into the hull.

Each person give me two attack rolls and if you have gathered a motley crew of pirates, give me a single d20 attack roll for each of them. VdP will automatically follow Siggard whatever score you roll. (I will narrate effects of any damage). Each person also give me an action post.

Everyone at +1 to hit if you can stand the bagpipe noise, and also an additional +1 to hit and +1 damage if you stay on the deck rather than explore as that is where Elijah will stay.
