A small history of the island of Monte Verde is available for folk to scroll through. It is kept in the 'About the Carib' forum notes. Please read.

Rexlin "Devil's Scowl" Dupre

When the deck has calmed down and Rex is off duty, he will seek out Pocc. "Ahoy, lad" He says quietly, joining him at the rail. "Rough trip? Ya have that look about you." he lets Pocc have the floor a bit listening as he looks out over the water.

"Well, it's off to Monte Verde now. Green Mountain is the translation, if I'm not mistaken. montagne verde in Gualinese. I won't lie, I've heard some bad things. The place is supposedly infested with venomous snakes, on land and all around. Wild natives. Quicksand that will swallow you up. I don't suppose you can speak to snakes?"

Geoffrey hears the reference to snakes, and remembers hearing the same thing from other crew. It sounds a place he has no business going. But, like all good pirates, he will go where the captain takes him.

Sig is a bit down since the captain denied allowing Baby Amber to stay on board. He remains at his studies during the trip, still hoping to impress the officers with his magical skills one day.

He doesn't like the sound of this Green Mountain place, but he is still part of the crew and will continue to follow orders. He knows that Iggway is somehow connected to this mission and he would genuinely like to help her out if he can, so he tries to stay positive along their voyage.

Pocc nods before responding to Rexlin "Aye indeed and guilt wracking my brain I felt I aught to give the captain that belt as a small means to paying off my debt. For I am ashamed of my actions after saving Eli's life. It's a deed bad enough I'd likely be sent to walk the plank or who else knows what the crew might do to me." pausing for a brief sigh feeling some of the guilt removed having briefly talked about the issue weighing on his mind "Yes I suspect I could potentially talk to snakes. I did manage to talk to some rays that were more than mere rays on that last expedition. As for this place well I'd not turn my back on anyone in this place that we're set off to. Best be smart and travel in pairs or groups."

Frowns a little as he listens to the druid more or less confess to him. He gives it some thought and decides to keep that under his hat. "Guilt never did anyone no good. Let that go. You'll have all the chance in the workd to make good on that mess. I spose it evens out in the end anyhow. Anyway, your secret is safe with me." and that would be the last time he ever mentioned it.

"Rays huh?" he raises his eyebrows a little and turns back to the water a bit deep in thought, scowling at the horizon as if he could make the ocean boil. "Lets say once we got on that snake nest of an island, and assume everything goes well enough, what then, lad?"

Aye, aye, fair enough. What I keep thinking of is will all this fighting going on in the Carab, nothing seems to have ever changed. Nothing changes. But then I saw those rock people in the canoes of Tarik's little fleet heading for San Juan, I can't help but think I missed something of an opertunity. Maybe I could have been captain of my own war canoe or something. Still, I managed a spot near the captain, and that is something. My experience is those nearest the captain get promotion quickest. Not sure where exactly I'm going with this... just ramblings of a man too long sober, i spose. But a man has to have ambition. Don't get me wrong, i love my work, being in the thick of it, my heart pounding, seeing the same desperate look in my enemy's eyes... rum will never get you that drunk. But I'm not going to be young forever, and the sounds of Captain Dupre has a ring to it. It may never happen, but a man needs a dream. A goal. What's your's lad?"

Pocc "At this point, fighting appears to be a big part of this lifestyle. Though i doubt much that adventuring would be any different than a life out at sea pirating. As for my goals mere survival is a major goal of mine. Trying not to let my fellows die is another. As for personal gain I don't have much of a want or need for it. I'm a cleric of nature, the sea to be more specific. So perhaps one day having my own grove or island where i can protect and be at one with the sea life i suppose that is my ultimate goal. Aside from serving Poseidon and the other gods of the sea and nature. A simple life similar to the uncorrupt people out there in various places of the world."

Iggway likes watching the crew make merry, most of the men know not the invasive island that is Monte Verde and it's poisonous inhabitants. She travels down the long hallway and turns a corner to her meditation/prayer room. Iggway enters the room and lights multiple candles, then begins her shamanistic rituals. She paints her face like a coral snake, pops her snake fangs into her mouth, then begins chanting and writhing on the floor, praying to the Snakeman for protection and courage as they go to aid the Padre.

Seems a little taken aback. "You'd really just settle down like that? Some middle of nowhere for the rest of your days like a hermit? Why bother with all this then if that is all you're going for? You don't need a fortune for that. Heck even Mad Old Eli found an island..." he jerks up and looks over both shoulders then at the sky and the sea making a sign. Muttering something that sounds vaguly apologetic. "Anyway, what I guess I'm getting at is you're welcome with me any time, but I think you need to figure out what's driving you before it drives you mad in the gettin there. Frankly, I have a feeling you're going to be good luck to have around on this next venture. Just sayin' "

Nods at that and straightens. As he moves to leave he claps the young druid on the back he adds one last thing. "Got to believe in yourself first, lad, afore anyone else will. Keep that in mind." He then walks away, presumably to bed down for the night, or polish his weapons, whatever war hungry heathens like him do at night.

Geoffrey falls back into the routine, watching for boats, scrubbing decks, eating dried pork. He awaits their next landing with a bit more fear after hearing of countless serpents.

And so the 'rescue' journey continues...The McGregors' Revenge, an eight gun sloop. Heading into familiar waters for she was initially launched as a Bahamian trading sloop, rigged for fast sailing around these same Carib Islands. Subsequently impounded by the Bretons for smuggling, the sloop was commandeered by the gallows escapee and rebel, Captain Lazarus. Leading with a motley crew of fellow convicts, he sailed away with her from under the colonial long noses of the Port Royal governors. After several escapades with 'Rackhams Boyz', a notorious armada of ramshackle raiding ships under the afore named named pirate, the McGregors' Revenge branched out independently and earned a 'Letter of Marque' from the Gauloise authority to harass and raid as a privateer on their behalf.

Recently sailing from the Haldane island of St Eustatius, the 'McG', equipped with a new salty and enthusiastic crew are travelling to the remote island of Monte Verde to rescue some pox ridden settlers from indigenous native unrest and settle a debt owed to the islands priest, Padre Claude Du Lautrere. Via a stopover in the pirate haven of the Turks and Caicos, seeking repairs after a dramatic encounter with a pod of migrating whales, the sloop now cleaves through the water as a hot knife through butter, running beam reach to the wind at a furious pace of knots.

All aboard are at full health save for an unfortunate mutinous crew member shot in the back at point blank range by Mr Simonsen as he ran below deck to lay hands on 'the Jonah', Elijah Crowthorne. The pistol shot in the spine meaning he will never walk again. Also on board and held restrained in the brig is a strange figure, that of a captive 'escort' taken from the Succubus brothel. Sadly, some of the crew say a tearful farewell to gypsy baby Amber and a grotesque hags head is displayed prominently over the prow bowsprit, its' tongue incredulously waving in the wind catching its frothy sticky rotting mouth.

And so we continue:...

Pocc takes the helm, assisted by Szmodics who uses his new locket, won at the gambling table. It offers a precise indication of the constellations directly above the sloop so navigating under dark clouds or at night becomes so much easier. With the additional aid it provides for navigation, you can stay on course with a normal [3d6] vs wisdom roll (please roll either of you). Also on the deck is the dwarf, helping to man (or dwarf) the wheel in the rougher currents.

Pocc is also summoned to the captains office."I understand from your report that you have the ability to communicate in some fashion with creatures, great and small. That is a useful gift though we have many on board fluent in spoken languages, you are one of the rare few who follow a maritime vocation in such arts. Find someone among the crew to apprentice to you, I want a sailor babbling in 'fish' talk by the end of the month. Dismissed."

Szmodics is also summoned to the quarters. "I receive reports of your behaviour in Cockburn with much alarm and amusement. You express an ability for quick thinking and gathering information. An admirable quality, and much needed on a privateering sloop. I have a job for you!" (see private forum).

Rexlin, volunteers for duty and after a chat with the quartermaster is tasked with creating several skin greaves from rough pieces of leather. Any working party sent ashore on snake riddled islands can have the additional protection to their legs from any striking creatures. Holden, busy with some crafting ideas of his own is seconded to help 'marine Dupre'. both give me a [3d6] roll for the effectiveness of the pieces.

Sister Iggway , spends time in the medic room and galley. Spare time is used worshipping and private devotional studies. Several men knock on the doors for questions about the island and stories of the snakes. Iggways knowledge however limited, is gratefully received though many still clear away and only peek through the door when she writhes in shamanistic rites, learning and reciting her spells old and new ones. 'Butcher' Vayne a little bit jealous of the cleric with her benevolence use of healing to the crew who would otherwise have paid extra coins into his coffers. "Miss Gweequay",instructs the captain,"When we land upon Monte Verde and enter the mission, foremost after securing the safety of settlers is to collect enough vials of anti-venom and other such experimental equipment from wherever Padre supervisors its creation. It would be a such a shame to lose this wealth of knowledge and perhaps we may continue to research such endeavours in a new laboratory elsewhere. Bring back to the ship the formula scrolls and equipment needed to maintain these studies."

Elijah Crowthorne, gets tooled up with a new holy symbol from Rexlin. He is busy on board preaching doom and gloom, the lost prophet of the seas. The Captain doesn't mind too much if the men give up their more salubrious ways but tempers the chapel room meetings to a few interested folk. No good having a clique on board that could mutiny, as happened before. Doing his rounds, Elijah visits the captive young lady 'Catriona', concerned that her imprisonment is a cause for repentance. Visiting the aft brig, he finds that Old Plighty is hopping around on his wooden leg in font of the brig cell door. He seems to be playing 'charades' with Catriona who is unseen on the other side. When approached he says, "Not doing any harm truly not Reverend Sir. But she seems to mimic my every move and look even clones a wooden leg to stomp like mine!" OP has clearly been at the rum again, Catriona steps forward into view of the sea priest, looking for all the world as a half dressed glamorous escort, tall dark hair, leggy, vivacious.(Urson you may respond to in character to any of Elijah's comments).

"Elijah, as a cleric and healing priest, we may need your divine favours especially so if indeed these settlers are riddled with pox. I cannot have the crew affected or they will mutiny. Create for the crew filtered breathing masks and string up in the lower berth a netted 'quarantine area' for any infected souls." Captain orders the priest about his duties.

Siggard Hagslayer, gets a surprise when he visits the mage study room. Inside the facilities are a little more cramped with the addition of a large ornamental aquarium, complete with several small octopi and a coral diorama. Y(ou may complete your studies of the new spell during this time.)

Geoffrey Blood and Zoggrot Grimgut are also summoned to the officers quarters. both are placed under the watchful eye of 'Dogger'. The gunnery dwarf looks over the new recruits and bawls at them about the hidden dangers of cannons, loose matches struck near to the gunpowder, recoil effects and creating impromptu chain shot. Over the next few days, when Zoggrot is not on duty in the rigging, or Geoffrey taking time to watch from the Crows' Nest, both Mr Blood and Mr Grimgut join a few other 'forlorn hopes' as Dogger calls them and puts each of them through a rigorous training schedule in cannon firing arts. "The accuracy of the cannons is directly proportional to the skill of the crew. The more skill, the more we blow the other ships sky high!". Please give me a [4d6] vs intell roll. Do this each day until successfully passed, then add +1 to your gunnery skills.

With each party member busy about their assigned tasks the hours pass away quickly. The sloop cutting a swath NW along the east of the Crooked Islands and navigating around the chartered coral reefs. Samana Cay, an outpost for a Breton settlement a few miles further east is close by. A sighting is made of a small convoy of laden galleons taking the long arduous voyage across the ocean back to the colonial mainlands. A tempting target to waylay any straggling boats but precautionary escort vessels seem to be tailing the tacking ships. The lightly armed sloop takes a diversion to loop away in the Bahamian channel and steer clear of the threat of engagement from the guardians before resetting the sails and committing to her course. The channel between the islands see various ships, some large merchant like vessels, occasional strains of Haldanish music floating across the waves in the night from shadowy masted silhouettes. A distant ships bell tolls eight bells and crossing past the Cat Island, several small pinaces seek shelter beyond cannon range after steering through dubious waters with dangerous hidden reefs. Eventually the island of Nassau looms large into view. The Breton island was struck by a serious hurricane during the rainy season and brought many of the fine historic buildings to ruin. Skirting west around to avoid Breton customs, (Captain Lazarus is wanted by them after all), the McGregor's Revenge cuts a lone figure towards its destination and the repayment of a debt owed. Monte Verde is finally spotted on the horizon.

okay, before we disembark onto the island I will let you all complete any actions or verbals you wish to have.

Holden salutes the quartermaster smiling and humming as he sits next to Rexlin creating skin greaves, "Oh Rexlin! It has been a while friend, I heard you embraced Poseidon as the one you pray for when the water gets choppy", his face gets a bit closer and is clearly filled with interest, "Say, did something change? Does the air seem fresher? Does the water glimmer in the night? Do you hear whispers in your dreams? Or feel a presence around you?"

Pocc at the helm feels strange being at the helm however embraces it for what it is trying to enjoy the moment and concentrate not to screw up badly [3d6] = 14 vs wisdom (14)

At the Captains quarters "Aye sir, captain sir! Might that you have someone in mind or who among the crew would be best to have me train sir? Any suggestions of the best man fit for the learning. Also I'd like to clarify that I had to use a spell to be able to speak to the rays sir." once dismissed from the captains quarters.... the seadruid heads off to take care of his usual duties then starts looking for a candidate to train in the ways of "fish talk".
