Pocc Vorche, Siggard Blyth, Elijah Crowthorne and a sailor introducing himself as 'Gin' Van den Poel, a wily old sailor sporting a drooping handlebar moustache and a heavy crossbow, get lowered in a jolly boat and with a small crate of supplies, (waterskins, two days rations, rope, several torches, lantern and flask box) set of across the south Atlantic.

Having looked at the compass and taken a bearing Pocc points SW and sets a course, all four rowing against a stiff wind until clear of the harbour. Several small dugout canoes cling around the bows of a larger barque struggling to enter, their gypsy owners signaling you as leave.

Pocc [4d6] = 18 skill check

"Sea vagabonds and thieves," Van den Poel says, spitting overboard. "They would sell you their granny as soon as look at you, inbreeds best avoided unless you got something to sell."

Pocc shares with the group what he knows of the Cays they are heading towards and unravels a small pouch containing a waxy, smelly substance. "This pinch, even a thumbnails amount is worth several sovereigns. Mages prize it for its use in higher tiered castings."

Elijah Crowthorn, sea priest:

Old Eli listens as he rows and watches the crest and fall of the dark patient waves, his restless spirit content to be close to the sea again.

What does Pocc share about the Cays, please?
And where can I find a description of Pocc?
Thanks.

Pocc is being NPC'd as Norjax got too busy. Find him in the character sheet section.

Known stuff about the islands come from his report to the Captain, posted in the 'about the Carib' forum. The Cays are small islands, two main ones with a combined coastline of approximately 25 miles. The habit is rough rocks and a thin layer of soil, the main growth being thick fibrous hemp trees and bushes cultivated for basic weaving, rope and utensil making. Several species of lizards populate the islands, migratory cranes and turtles habit the reef areas. With no access to natural water, no permanent settlements have been established. A run down former pig farm lies in ruins in the largest Cay.

Siggard speaks as he rows.

We may find suitable shelter at the old farm if we need it. I am interested to see what else we may discover on these cays.

If we find enough of this.......whale puke, I might like to keep a pinch of it for myself. To use for research purposes, of course.

The foursome put their backs into it, rowing hard and following the line of Long Cay, a jutting mass of bare rock and scrub a short distance south of Cockburn Harbour. From its shoreline, spear fishermen prowl the reefs. The eddy from the island pushes you further on your course and away into the open sea.

Once clear of neighbouring Cays, the ocean swell picks up but thankfully not dramatically enough to hinder your progress, slow but nonetheless steady. Van der Poel nods towards a few specks of white sails, discreetly tacking westwards away from the Caicos, you can only imagine perhaps Iberian galleons trading out of San Juan.

Alarmingly you find several humpbacks cresting waves close by but as small as the craft is you are deemed neither threat nor morsel. Small you are and alone, braving dangers that Elijah knows only too well. We're it not for your rescue he could have drifted close by here by now.

Thankfully, after eight long back breaking hours, you arrive in the vicinity of the Ambergris Cays. A little off course but with some additional adjustments and checking the compass, your destination us reached. Haldane navigational skill coming through to keep on track.

The sun is setting over the western horizon, a chill picks up and you realise you are fairly soaked from sea spray and waves. Finding some overhanging copse of salt willow, you can pull you boat a few feet off the reef and anchor it securely against the ebbing tide. You make landfall on Little Ambergris Cay, the eastern edge of a small diamond shaped landmass. It rises in the centre to perhaps 80ft above sea level, a sharp point cresting a facetted shape. It casts a shadow over your boat as the sun disappears behind.

Van de Poel, begins to arrange a few loose rocks and pebbles into a ring to make the barest of warming fires and sets a tripod to cook a meal. "anyone nab a whale steak from Vayne afore we set off?" he asks.

Siggard looks on at Van de Poel blankly, hoping that someone else thought of bringing some of the fresh meat along. No matter really, as the half-elf still has some iron rations to eat if there is no real food.

He takes a stroll around the immediate area as the fire is started, hoping to see any possible threats before the light of day is completely gone.

It shouldn't take us long to search this smaller island...........right? Less than a day I would figure?

there were two days of basic rations stashed on the boat, but fresh fish always welcome and with a few practice castings, Elijah is able to summon up, (well maybe not quite summon as that just wouldn't be fair play): half a dozen fresh pink scaled tapia get coaxed out of the protecting coral to nab a lure and end up roasting on Van de Poel's skewers. They are a tasty treat but as the bones are stripped of meat and cast aside, you notice several of the rocks quickly move and grab at the morsels.

Pocc lifts up a firebrand to give light and you see the edge of the island is literally beginning to teem with large crabs. They twist and crawl into every nook and crevice. Sideways motion, forward backwards, some digging into the sand and burying themselves under a homely niche.

The crabs are about the size of a dinner plate, some larger. You can estimate that within a few hours the coastline might be swamped by these critters to the point that every step may squash one.

Siggard , you will notice that the ground slightly changed as you trek inland and go higher. There is sparse vegetation and soil, likely less suited to the crabs. Under the moonlight you can hear the familiar calls of gulls and nesting seabirds. Approaching various patches of ground or sisal hemp you also here the scuttling of other creatures fleeing your prowling presence.

Actions please

Old Eli spears the first crabs with his trident and cooks up a feast. "Dinner be served, lads."

When it becomes apparent the crabs will occupy the beach over night, he'll agree to move inland.

Siggard is beginning to dislike the look of this place a lot more now. He didn't just row for 8 hours only to be eaten by crustaceans.

When we've finished dining, I think we should get ourselves off of this beach. We could make a camp higher up inland, in the shrubbery. Of course, one never knows what we will find there either.

The mage grabs a burning stick from the fire and moves up to the highest spot that he can see on the smaller island, hoping to find a suitable clearing to make a camp. He looks to Van de Poel to see how he feels about a move.

'Gin' Van de Poel, hauls up the jolly into a small creek between two rocks. Securing the boat and the supplies. He takes some water skins and the lantern with a spare flask of oil. He tramples a few scuttling crab beneath his feet, their claws pinching his boots in a death embrace. Uninjured, but his boots get a few lacerations.

The highpoint on Little Ambergris Cay, is a pyramid shaped hillock, surrounded by spares groves of willow, sisal hemp and a few palm trees. The island resembles a long stretched diamond shaped. You see no buildings but as you get higher you can kick through the remains of a previous camp, embers long since blown away. The spot seems as good as any, flat ground with a little cover from a rock placed as a form of windbreaker. With the night setting in you cannot see much out to sea, but you hear the gulls and taste the constant salty sea air.

As you move from the cooking fire to the camp, you see several small lizards run out of the undergrowth. A few grab smaller crabs in the maws and crush them viciously, occasionally you see the vice-versa, crabs darting forth from to grab a lizard, severing an arm, a leg, a tail. "A dog eat dog island," expresses Van de Poel.

"Shit", is his next word. The light from the torch, flickering in the wind revealing the slow tongue licking maw of a reptilian face. It seems the campsite is already occupied and the residents don't like being disturbed. Creeping across the windbreaker rock and another uncurling a long tail at the edge of your light, frilled giant lizards snarl at your intrusion, rising to their stature they shake their heads and snap warnings to you.

. The lizards are about 4-5 feet long, head to body with a similar length of tail: initiative and actions please

Siggard nods at the old salts wisdom but is surprised to hear that the first reaction of a nature lover is to kill, especially since we are clearly the invaders here. Hearing the indecision prompts the wizard into action.

Initiative [1d6] = 1 :?

He reaches into his pouch of goodies and pulls out a pinch of fine sand as he slowly backs away from the threat.

I can try to put them to sleep if they decide to charge but, I don't think the outright slaughter of these creatures is totally necessary.

He continues to back away as he speaks but will cast his magic if the creatures decide to attack. He looks to Gin to see how he reacts to the situation as he tries to ascertain whether there are any more than the first pair close by.

Pocc "Slaughter oh no we are merely 'fishing and hunting' something even us nature lovers do from time to time in order to eat and survive. Though yes we are the invaders in this scenario." the druids stomach growls "That reminds me of how hungry I am." the druid thinks about the sleep "That sleep spell would be a more ethical way I guess leave the lizards and go for the crustaceans then?" oddly licking his lips considers his ethical dilemmas at hand and readies for action.

Old Eli makes no further encroachment, seemingly heeding the snapping warnings of the giant lizards. Instead, he cries out for Poseidon's blessing.

“Me Lord be the Ocean itself! He be me Cap'n and me strength, in whom I trust! He be me shield, an' the ship o' me salvation! I will call upon the Lord Poseidon, who be worthy to be praised, so shall I be saved from me enemies!”

Casts 'Bless'.

Poseidon is invoked by the advocacy of Elijah Crowthorne, calling forth divine favour upon the group. Strengthened in morale against a vicious pairing of lizards, Van de Poel is the first to attack. Firing from his heavy crossbow, the bolt penetrates the neck of one beast who thrashes alarmingly.

Van de Poel, crossbow [1d20+1] = 13+1 = 14 Damage [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5

in an amendment to weapons, light crossbows deal d4+1 damage, heavy bolts deal d6+1, just a slight advantage with range and power over an arrow

Its' mate rears a head, snapping frothing jaws and swirls in a high pitch, the fan like frills expanding around its head. He launches off the windbreaker towards the leg of the torch holder who dares enter his territory.

Lizard bite attack [1d20] = 5 damage [1d6] = 1

Siggard, deftly wafts the creature away with the torch and moments after sprinkling handful of glittering sand, the aggressor wearies dramatically and collapses on the earth. Eyelids close, for one lizard in peaceful sleep, another rasps painfully drifting into a comatose state.

Pocc , steps forward, unsure wether to ease this creatures passing or remove the bolt from its throat.

Sleep spell 2+2HD monster number affected [1d4] = 4

On the other side of the windbreaker lie a further pair of embracing lizards. Several scuttle noises faintly disappear off into the night tapping across rock or loose stone. You are alone under the moon, lizards fitfully resting by the old campsite.

The sleep spell has a few rounds duration. Actions please. Interesting that Dave Arnesen who created a lot of the spells said he specifically wrote 'creatures' in the Sleep spell description to differentiate it from being used vs 'humanoids'.... how many folk didn't know that?

I didn't know that tidbit of information on the sleep spell.

Pocc will take mercy on the creature and end its life as swiftly as he can, using his scimitar...

Initiative [1d6] = 1
Scimitar [1d20] = 10 to hit, [1d8] = 1 dmg
