Index of monsters

#1 Post by ToniXX »

I just discovered another useful resource:
http://ant.hivemind.net/monsters.html

From the top of the page:
Here you will find a spreadsheet listing every monster ever published in an official D&D source
You can download an Excel spreadsheet and search it fairly easily. It doesn't give monster specs, but it does give the product in which each beast appears. This seems pretty useful to me, so I wanted to make a note of it here. Hopefully someone else will find it useful as well.

Nice find. I wish more of the cells were populated, but seeing as how the campaign I'm starting up is getting closer to actually starting, this could be helpful.

I find this to be a useful reference (currently, I've only used it for some fiction writing, to help come up with ideas for story line, but plan on making some use of it in some module-writing I've begun, as well):

This is a good one:

And this is a great one, but be careful it's a link to every 1E and 2E monster database. I love excel, but it's a download link:

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

These are all good resources.
Ron the Excel you linked to not only includes over 6000 monsters, but it also has all of their stats... Holy cow! Very nice!

Aye. One of my favorites. We could probably link Kellri's CDD resources here as well. He's got good stuff.

The first link is more useful than the second, in that it at least provided a few examples. Both, though, were pretty similar.

I've become a big fan of the Angry DM (I backed his forthcoming book on Kickstarter), so I found your How to XP Good link particularly interesting. I'll definitely have to finish reading it, but I stopped here:
"But Mearls did give a lot of terrible advice. And one piece of terrible advice he gave was that, after three years of observing groups playing D&D, he – Mearls – has decided that players aren’t gaining levels fast enough. He said that players should level up at least once a session and ideally EVERY FOUR HOURS."

I don't know when the post was first published (probably sometime in November of 2017), but, sadly, that has almost become a reality with the introduction of the current season in 5e. Instead of four hours to level up, it's eight hours (or two, four hour long sessions). At least for tier 1 characters (levels 1-4). For tier 2 (levels 5-10), I'm pretty sure the requirement doubles -- instead of two sessions, you need four (or 16 hours). My initial thought was that it felt fast.

Well, it definitely is fast compared to AD&D editions, but I'm not sure how drastic it will be by previous 5e standards.

I've become okay with rapid advancement during the low levels. In 1e/2e, it can take a looooooong time (especially in play-by-post) for a 1st level character (even a thief) to reach 2nd level. In 5e, characters reach 3rd level pretty quickly. Even 4th. But, having played it (5e) for as long as I have --

Wait, this tread is meant to talk about monsters?

Well, in that case, I'll throw a quick shout out to Kobold Press for their recently released Creature Codex (which goes great with their Tome of Beasts). I just received mine about a week ago now, and while I haven't had a chance to really look through it, it's 400+ pages of monster goodness... which reminds me of a conversation I had with my awesome wife:

Tier 1 requires 4 hours, Tier 2-4 is 8. But you do have the option of using slow progression, which halves your rewards, but allows you to potentially unlock more magic items, as you'll be playing more adventures.
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.
