D&D Beyond

#1 Post by dmw71 »

I've never played 5e, and doubt I ever will (check out the hit points in this video!), but thought this might be of interest to some people that do play and enjoy this newest edition:

D&D Beyond

There's a bit more about it on this Forbes article, which is where I initially learned about it.

This was barely two years ago. Now, not only do I love 5e, but I also love D&D Beyond.

How times change.

This, again, will likely fail to appeal to the masses here, but there were some major announcements made during the weekly Dev Update today (the "special" announcement begins here).

James Haeck left Fandom and D&D Beyond a few weeks ago.

Today, three major personalities also announced their departures:
  1. Lauren Urban (Community Manager for D&D Beyond)
  2. Todd Kenreck (Host and Creative Manager)
  3. Adam Bradford (D&D Beyond Co-Founder and VP of Tabletop Gaming at Fandom)

I'm a little scared.

Eventually, I'm sure.

I think 5e is still selling so well I don't think there's a lot of pressure from (Hasbro) or Wizards to rush a new edition. It's just one avenue (obviously), but here are the sales ranks for the main core books on Amazon:

* Player's Handbook (Ranked 405 in all of Books)
5e PHB 405.jpg
5e PHB 405.jpg (67.72 KiB) Viewed 1401 times

* Dungeon Master's Guide (Ranked 375 in all of Books)
5e DMG 375.jpg
5e DMG 375.jpg (70.18 KiB) Viewed 1401 times

* Monster Manual (Ranked 455 in all of Books)
5e MM 455.jpg

* Tasha's Cauldron of Everything (Ranked 179 in all of Books; Note: Most recently released sourcebook.)
5e Tasha 179.jpg

They're all in the top-500 of all books sold on the massive platform... and that's 6+ years after their initial release. A sales platform, mind you, that was launched specifically to sell books.
Wikipedia wrote:"Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in Bellevue, Washington, on July 5, 1994. It started as an online marketplace for books but expanded to sell electronics, software, video games, apparel, furniture, food, toys, and jewelry."

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Madness indeed.

1997: WotC buys D&D
1999: Hasbro buys WotC
2000: D&D 3e released
2003: D&D 3.5 released
2008: D&D 4e released
2014: D&D 5e released

Yeah. They're due. Maybe they'll call it 5.5? Or beyond Beyond? Or D&D the TV series the game?

I'm out of the loop when it comes to RPG's.. I'm late for the 5e train, but oh well. So why are people leaving WotC? Just looking for something else?

D&D Beyond is actually not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast at all. They were owned by Curse, which I think was an Amazon company (through Twitch), but was acquired and currently owned by Fandom. But that was in late 2018, so it's been a few years.

I just wonder if there's something going on internally, that those that left know about, that will be dropping soon.

That could be. It kind of reminds me of the story behind Pathfinder, I don't know how accurate the story is but It's basically made by people who loved D&D 3.5e or former employees of WotC that didn't like the direction that WotC was going with D&D. Again, I'll have to do some more research.

D&D Beyond was helpful in learning 5e for me. Not my favorite version, but my wife and Godson like it and he is running it so I play.

I don't use Twitter often, and I think this might be the first time I've ever been retweeted, so this was kind of cool:
Joe Starr Retweet.jpg
Joe Starr Retweet.jpg (214.7 KiB) Viewed 1295 times

Fun Fact
  1. Joe Starr, the new face of D&D Beyond, is one of the writers behind the Honest Trailers videos (and other Screen Junkies projects).

I will link to their latest stream about NPCs once it's been uploaded to YouTube (likely tomorrow). I missed the first third of it (stinking work!), but the second third was a lot of fun. Joe has an interesting method of creating unique NPCs, which I liked quite a bit.

I've heard of assigning a celebrity to an NPC previously, but an animal?! Good stuff.

Probably not, but I can see why it makes sense from a business standpoint.

I'm actually going backward in editions, not forward. Took a chance on 5E and I'm not that impressed. ;)

I have played it plenty enough now to know I prefer the older editions as well.

5e has become by far my favorite edition of D&D. I'll play earlier editions, but they aren't my preferred options.
Sometimes this summer I will most likely be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.
