1E Rules and resources

#1 Post by rredmond »

Found this fantastic resource for AD&D 1E games and wanted to share!

http://pandaria.rpgworlds.info/cant/rul ... spells.htm

--Ron--
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

ah ah!!

you know it was only after playing AD&D for more than 30 years (think I rolled my first dice in anger on the old 'Red Box' set),whilst reading through the spells list for info that I discovered that ...

Cure Light Wounds (and the like) do not restore HP from wounds caused by undead, or creatures only hit by silver or magical weapons!!!....

cause me to think I've had the luck of the DMing gods and survived a thousands wounds!! :o

The way I read that is that CLW doesn't cure wounds of creatures who are undead or affected only by silver weapons. A positive energy - negative energy thing.
It cures the wounds caused by those creatures fine. But I'll have to double check again.

Cure Light Wounds, as it appears in the 1e Players Manual:
Cure light Wounds (Necromantic) Reversible
Level: I Components: V, S
Range: Touch
Duration: Permanent Saving Throw: None
Area of Effect: Character touched
Explanation/Description: Upon laying his or her hand upon a creature, the
cleric causes from 1 to 8 hit points of wound or other injury damage to the
creature's body to be healed. This healing will not affect creatures without
corporeal bodies, nor will it cure wounds of creatures not living or those
which can be harmed only by iron, silver, and/or magical weapons. Its
reverse, cause light wounds, operates in the same manner; and if a person
is avoiding this touch, a melee combat "to hit" die is rolled to determine if
the cleric's hand strikes the opponent and causes such a wound. Note that
cured wounds are permanent only insofar as the creature does not sustain
further damage, and that caused wounds will heal - or can be cured -
just as any normal injury will. Caused light wounds are 1 to 8 hit points of
damage.
I assume you are referencing the following excerpt...
This healing will not affect creatures without
corporeal bodies, nor will it cure wounds of creatures not living or those
which can be harmed only by iron, silver, and/or magical weapons.
Your initial reading of the spell (some 30 years ago) was quite accurate.

"This healing will not affect creatures without corporeal bodies..." - that means you can't cast it on something that doesn't have a physical body.

"nor will it cure wounds of creatures not living..." - that means you can't cast it on the undead.

"...or those which can be harmed only by iron, silver, and/or magical weapons." - again, you can't cast CLW on creatures that require special weapons to hit them.

you know I confess, I did have to go back to the 'manual' and re-read it again after my initial post. Did think, "not allowing healing...? cor that'd be a bit stupid as clerical healings vs anything undead has to be their speciality". means that blessing that friendly werebear to guide us through the woods was out then...hey, anything can happen in a DM's world as long as we have fun (tell the kids that all the time as my gelatinous cube swallows them up...!!!).

still interesting re-reading through the 'rules' to note what I did miss over the years....like magic rings only working 80% of the time on dwarves, gnomes and 1/2lings and little issues that were never ironed out like being able to be a clumsy 1/2 orc assasin and gettingto progress further in thiefly skills than being a nimble thief class etc. Never liked the race class limits much and only allowing NPC dwarf clerics etc.

anything you guys missed?

Magic Rings was definitely one of mine. There have been one or two more that I found while DMing games here. I'll have to go back and see what I can remember. But the DMG is a treasure trove of that sort of stuff, stuff I thought was House Rules, or stuff that I swear was in the DMG and realize must've been house rules.
Goodness, this game is awesome!

A "concise" spell list, for the less verbose players.

Good stuff though for PbP games, or for you to print out (only 10 pages) and bring on the go to games.

Navigating around that site is complicated, the formatting is terrible and there is no link for a "home" page. But it can still be very useful. Between my OSRIC PDF and that site, there's little else I've needed for awhile.

I wasn't sure if I should break this out to a separate thread, but for me (and honestly the creator of the game) Greyhawk was the setting. So with no further ado, some (quite excellent) Greyhawk map resources:
