Temple of Sutekh. Hall of The Serpent. Third Tier of the Great Pyramid
Lost City of Khemsa, Forgotten Kingdom of Verulia, Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
Day Two. Late afternoon. 14th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia




The explorers breathlessly advance upon the age-old sorcerous bloodbath.

Xorzen of Osorus treads softly through the carnage of Sutekh cultists and finds Loche's floor seam. The hawk-masked albino's clever hands feel a tiny lever beneath the stone lip of the altar top. It can be slid up or down. It is currently down.

Garrin of Argos grips the femur of a long dead warlock and hurls it at the southern wall. It falls to the floor with a clatter. This brazen violation of the dead, and the barren region of floor, triggers nothing.

With Amethu's guidance, Garrin regards a bone scrollcase and an enchanted shield whose blazon was burned off in the conflagration near the pentagram.



The Atlantean paladin knows that none of these supernatural artifacts are cursed. None emanated evil in his blessed sight.

Roan, son of Rune, seizes an axe from out of the bygone genocide. He's never seen better craftsmanship. (+1 battle axe, nonmagical) The Vanir barbarian examines the skeletal cadavers and finds several with wounds upon their bones, perhaps hacked by blades while they still drew breath. At least some of these butchered conjurers did not die by deviltry and flame.

At Amethu's outcry, Zahra tenses and whirls, spear raising...but when she grasps the extent of the hawkmask's recklessness, she nearly adds her voice to the mage's. She springs for the doorway, if there is a clear path.

Garrin curses silently when realizes that the switch has been flipped.

Garrin grabs the enchanted shield and the scroll case. He tucks the scroll case under his belt for now. Facing the south wall, he draws his sword, raises his new shield, and prepares for the worst....

Xorzen the Verulian monk waves back Loche, and everyone takes heed in an urgent, angry retreat from the temple of death. The Son of Osorus holds his breath, closes his eyes, lays a finger upon the secret miniature lever behind the altar, and pushes it upward.

Nothing happens.

Xorzen believes he might have heard the faintest scrape of stone, deep beneath the empty floor near the chamber's southwest corner. He opens his eyes, resumes breathing, and quietly shares his impression with the others.

Kiri first backs out of the doorway when those in the room start springing for it. Then when the commotion dies down he makes his way to just inside the door. "Perhaps the sound you describe is a catch that activates the trap. Sets it or disengages it. The question is, did you set it or disengage it? ...Anybody have a very long pole? Like, ten feet or so?" he says.

Opening his eyes after quickly shutting them as to not see his own death in reaction to the alarm that was raised, he takes note that nothing has happened. He exhales his held breath and returns to a normal rate of breathing. "Warn us next time would you please. This pyramid is full of death and if I can avoid it the better. Did your action disable or enable something? Should we try the turning hallway?"

Garrin admires his newly acquired shield. Before discarding the old one, he asks, "Anybody need a shield? I've got a spare."

Loche double checks the room for any visible changes. He also checks out the hall for any visible changes.

Loche is beginning to get slightly unhinged on account of the mysteries hidden in this place. He also offers his ten-foot pole to anyone who wants it.

Xorzen checks all around the alter and then around the seem in the floor again, trying to discover if there is a way to open it.

He believes that he may have just found a way into a lower level of this deadly place, but keeps his suspicions to himself, just in case he's wrong.

Having braced himself when Xorzen flipped the switch, Roan, Son of Rune, relaxes a bit and hefts his new battle axe. Giving the Osoran a glare about his recklessness, the Vanir stays in the room and helps Xorzen search for clues, having also heard the clicking sound.

Taking the ten foot pole from Loche, he will move to just in front of the seam. "Get ready. I'm going to test it." he says.

Beneath the towering ceilings of the temple of death, Sutekh and his otherworldly minions patiently watch from the walls as the explorers reenter the bygone slaughter.

Garrin of Argos hefts his new shield and finds it lighter than it looks.

Kiri of the East hands his torch to Zahra the amazon and opens the bone case to find several sheets of parchment covered in alien hieroglyphics. To Amethu's mystic vision, the pages radiate sorcery. But neither Kiri nor the Verulian magus can decipher the pictoglyphs.
Kiri borrows Loche's pole, warns the others back, and prods the empty floor behind the altar. Nothing moves or gives way.

Roan, son of Rune, and Loche the Pict discern no visible changes in the temple or the hall outside it.

Xorzen wonders aloud if the seam in the floor has gotten thinner.

Xorzen drops to his knees and searches around the seem in the floor to see if it has reverted to its original width. He studies the entire area carefully to see if there is a way to open the slab.

"There has to be something under this stone slab! What are we missing here?"
