Re: Chapter 1: Shallow Grave of Sand

#61 Post by dmw71 »

Loche reaches down and hastily searches through the sands with his fingers to find a suitable stone. "Ye bade 'ere," he says to Goniza in his thick accent before rushing north (bottom), looking to seek cover behind the thick stone wall in that direction. Eyeing the battle of barbarians, he wants to be in a better position, but still within sling range, to help if things start to go badly.

Translation:
"You stay here."

Goniza tries to interpret "Ye bade 'ere" but he cannot. "Loche, " he calls out, "You've got some accent!"

Goniza switches to flail and shield and moves out to help Roan against Thogg.

Biblo, libriomancer

I see the battle quickly spread. The targets too scattered now for my sopoforic sorceries. I sprint to the nearest cover. Arrows are what is needed. I slide the bow off my shoulder, nock an arrow, squint against the sun, aim and fire.

Day One
The Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
13th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Dawn. Hot, clear, dry

Image

The agonizing death screams of Khokegi the nomad echo excruciatingly off the uncaring monuments to eternity.

Image

Loche rushes north around the crumbling wall and runs headlong into the forgotten Shevata of Zamora!

Image

The ruthless, cunning thief was laying in wait, readying to plunge two blades into the back of the unsuspecting Goniza. He would have to content himself with Loche's chest instead. Turned out he liked that less. Shevata swears a sizzling oath as he misses the agile Pict with both shortsword and curved dagger!

Unaware, Goniza moves south around the very same wall and joins Roan against Thogg the barbarian. Thogg likes these odds. He grins mirthlessly and ferociously as he asks his foes, "Which of you dies first?"

Nearby, Gronda the savage fires two deadly arrows at Osak the Hyrkanian, and finally shows she is mortal. Both missiles hurtle past Osak; his strategy of attacking with the sun at his back continues to bear fruit.

But from over her shoulder fly more arrows, fired by Biblo! The antiquarian archer looses them 180 feet from his target, firing into the rising, blood red sun and scores one hit! The arrow impales Osak above his right hip, the razor sharp head exploding from his lower back with a spout of dark blood and spattered gore. From the sudden stench of urine on the wind, Gronda knew his kidney was punctured.

Image

Osak grinds his cracked yellow jawteeth against the pain, and swears revenge to Erlik, God of Death.

Arthfael of Cimmeria reaches the battlefield, taking cover behind the recently vacated western wall. He cries to Amenhotu, the ensorceled sorcerer, "We don't need to fight! Lay down your arms and quench your thirst with our water!"

Amenhotu parrots: "Lay down your arms!" and he grabs for the bow of Osak the barbarian!

Osak growls, "Craven wizard!" as his other arm unsheathes his scimitar! The blade still ringing, Osak whirls it at the Stygian's neck and swings wide due to the arrow still lodged in his side!

To the west, Garrin the Atlantean eloquently taunts Skuth, goading him into his trap. Skuth snorts thickly, "I hope you fight as pretty as you talk."

The massive Brythunian warrior lunges at the paladin of Argos with rope and jagged hooks, but cannot clear the broken monolith that lay before him. The titan falls, sprawled at Garrin's feet! The paladin swings his double-edged blade at Skuth's head and somehow misses, perhaps due to some subconscious pang of chivalry.

Nearby, Roan and Thogg the barbarians trade mighty sword strikes! KTANG!

Image

Each deathblow narrowly missing, their blades clash in a ferocious battle to the death!

Garrin Locke:

Garrin peers down the length of his blade at the prone Skuth, "To your feet, louse. Perhaps if you used a proper weapon instead of fishing equipment, you would fare better." Garrin refrains from attacking until the heathen is once again on his feet. He remains wary of the fiend, anticipating a fistful of sand directed toward his eyes.

"Whit in th'..." Loche says, startled by sudden appearance of Shevata. "Weel, whaur did ye come fae?" he chats up his imposing opponent, while reflexively reaching for the hilt of his bone dagger. "Ye'r a muckle yin..." he continues, hoping to distract his adversary, while lashing out with his blade towards the man's throat!

Roan, Son of Rune

Sweat running down his face, Roan knows he is in a fight for his life. He also knows this Cimmerian is as tough a foe as he's ever faced. Best finish him quickly...but...thinking too much has never been Roan's strong point and he proves it by chopping at Thogg and missing horribly.

Battle axe: [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4, [1d8+5] = 5+5 = 10

I grin at the lucky shot. Wiping sweat from brow, I fire more arrows hoping to end the man's life. He's engaged with the Stygian - maybe if I miss I'll hit him.

Gronda is relieved when she sees the bow shot of her enemy disrupted. She is even more pleased when she sees the brute pierced by another's arrow. She doesn't see where it came from, but is happy it wasn't aimed at her.

She stands and fires again at any enemy left standing. Targeting Osak, Skuth, and Shevata, in that order.

Attack w/ Longbow [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17 Damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3 [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3 Damage [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

Day One
The Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
13th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Dawn. Hot, clear, dry

Image

Image

The sun rose, etching the ageless walls and monoliths scarlet in its glow; as bright as the blood being spilled in the dead city below.

Ignoring the arrow in her own left forearm, Gronda of Zembabwei stoically puts another arrow into Osak the Hyrkanian nomad, this time at the gut. It, and the one lodged in his kidney, leak blood and piss onto the thirsty dunes.

Biblo the libriomancer looses more arrows from 180 feet away. Both sail over Gronda and whistle between Osak and Amenhotu!

Arthfael commands Amenhotu: "You must defend yourself against the Hyrkanian!"

Amenhotu nods solemnly. Then, with the well-honed arrogance of a Stygian, "Hyrkanian dog! You dare raise your weapons to me?!"
The wizard summons more fearsome magics, barking forbidden words of power, "'Ai! 'Ai! Fhtagn! Kadishtu! Thanarak! Vulg'th! Zhro!"

Image

Osak, pierced and wounded, lunges with hatred at Amenhotu. He comes at the wizard with scimitar and axe, but is struck by the Stygian's black sorcery mid-swing! Osak falls to the ground hard, with all the wind and half the life battered out of him. A moment passes. Then, snarling, he regrips both hilts and begins to rise.

Loche the Pict thief slashes his bone dagger at Shevata's throat and gives him a close shave but nothing more!

"Come now, savage," smiles Shevata. "If you're going to kill me it might as well be now before the heat of the day begins!" The Zamoran thief uses his charm and his shortsword to distract Loche and then he steps closer and, in these intimate proximities, gently slips his dagger into the Pict's side like a man entering his lover's bed. (-2 hp)

Garrin graciously lets his foe regain his feet, but he sees the dishonorable Skuth grab a handful of sand, readying to blind him. Without pleasure, the Atlantean paladin plunges his blade to the hilt through Skuth's heart. The Brythunian plummets backwards like a felled tree. His dead hand opens and the sand flows from it.

Roan of Vanaheim clashes his axe against Thogg's great sword again. KANG!

Goniza the Nemedian hurls his flail at Thogg in a deadly arc and crashes the barbarian's teeth into a wet, red ruin! Thogg is mostly gore and pulp from the neck up, yet he still lives. The Cimmerian spits out blood and teeth and then he smiles. It is a terrible thing to behold.

Thogg looks at Goniza and the great muscles of his arms swell in anticipation of murderous blows. He grips his great sword with both hands and swings savagely at Goniza's gut, trying to cut him in two. Instead, he hacks into his hip, glances off the pelvis bone and plows out of his upper thigh! (-7 hp)

Goniza falls to the crimson soaked sand. The Cimmerian smiles darkly, toothlessly at Roan, relishing what comes next.

Loche flinches as a dagger slips into his side. He stares up at the giant and smiles. "Let's dance," he says confidently; still in the same thick accent, but clearly understood. The Pict steels himself, the lashes out with his bone dagger again.

He smiles confidently and prepares to continue to battle the giant Zamoran.

Garrin Locke:

Regretful that he had to take the life of the heathen, Skuth, Garrin mutters a short prayer to Mitra, giving thanks to his patron for protection and asking that the blasphemous Brythunian's soul be forgiven.

A sudden bloodcurdling scream rips Garrin away from his orisons. His head snaps to the source, and he sees that it is the wizard-priest, Goniza.

Garrin rushes to his aid, trudges through the sands, and stands over the fallen man in an attempt to protect him from the barbarian, Thogg.
I know the move over to Goniza will probably constitute as Garrin's turn, but I included an attack roll just in case. To Hit with +1 Long Sword: [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9; Damage: sm - [1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8; lg - [1d12+1] = 3+1 = 4

Roan, Son of Rune

When the flung flail strikes the Cimmerian, Roan half expects the barbarian to fall. What he doesn't expect is the bloodied beast to nearly kill Goniza!
With a roar of rage, Roan attacks again, but the gods are deaf to his internal pleas to end this dog's life!

Battle axe: [1d20+3] = 6+3 = 9, [1d8+5] = 8+5 = 13  :x

Content to let the two enemies fight it out amongst themselves, Gronda rushes to the north, trying to aid the strange speaking Pict. She stows her bow and brandishes her stone tipped spear along the way.

If she gets to the melee in time, she thrusts at the dashingly handsome Shevata, hoping he hasn't yet noticed her advance.

Attack w/ Spear [1d20] = 11 Damage [1d6] = 5 (if applicable, I didn't add a rear attack bonus)

Satisfied that Osak and Amenhotu will continue to fight each other without his encouragement, Arthfael turns his attention to the rest of the battlefield. Seeing Goniza fall and Roan in trouble, the druid realizes that he must resort to hand-to-hand fighting. He charges at his fellow Cimmerian, scimitar raised, its blade gleaming in the desert sun.

Scimitar (THAC0 20): [1d20+1] = 15+1 = 16 [1d8] = 8 (S/M)/[1d8] = 4 (L)
Roll does not include any bonuses from charging.

The rising sun turns the sky a fiery orange, and the world with it.

More of Biblo's merciless arrows rain down around Osak and Amehhotu as the nomad barbarian rises and they fight to the death.
Amenhotu sheathes his jeweled dagger in Osak's chest and twists it! "Hyrkanian scum!" he sneers.
Blood fills Osak's mouth, choking his final breath as he works to make those words Amenhotu's last.
Osak.jpg
Osak.jpg (175.46 KiB) Viewed 4656 times
Osak hacks murderous with his curved sword at the sorcerer's neck, decapitating him. Amenhotu's head falls to the sands, replaced by a geyser of blood at his shoulders. Separated from its vocal chords, the head shrieks silently in a frozen rictus that will serve as the Stygian's death mask.

Osak collapses atop him, dead and baptized in the crimson fountain.

Nearby, Shevata the Sly slashes both blades at Loche, this time across the eyes, missing the nimble Pict.

Loche stabs Shevata and feels his bone dagger sink deep. Shevata barely survives the wound. He smiles charmingly and then suddenly his chest erupts with blood and gore as Gronda's stone spearhear bursts from it. The Zembabweian savage had silently charged Shevata from behind. The Zamoran thief's heart is impaled and then he is burgling houses in Hell.

To the south, his great sword drenched in the blood of Goniza, Thogg promises Roan, "You're next." The massive Cimmerian deflects another axe blow from the starving Vanir barbarian and then nearly slashes Roan's throat from ear to ear! (-7 hp)

Arthfael and Garrin race to Roan's aid!
Garrin stands over Goniza's bloodied, broken form and, with a savage swing of his straight sword, amputates Thogg's left arm at the shoulder!
Arthfael's curved blade enters Thogg sideways at the mouth, through the wet red ruin of his teeth. The dark barbarian's lower jaw joins his arm on the sands as the druid's scimitar thunks deep into spine.

Image

Mighty Thogg falls, dying with a grim oath to Crom trying to escape his red, jawless maw.

The battle is over. The dead city is silent once more.

100 feet to the west, unbeknownst to the group, Biblo hears something behind him. (See PM)
