The Will to Live (character creation)

#1 Post by Inferno »

"Not all men seek rest and peace; some are born with the spirit of the storm in their blood, restless harbingers of violence and bloodshed, knowing no other path." -Robert E. Howard

Character Creation Rules:

Game System: AD&D 1e by the book, except where noted below.

Tone: Pulp, low fantasy, swords and sorcery.

Stats: Choose from one of the following arrays, and assign as you like. No modifications except for racial. Fyi, each array has an average of 12.5.

A) 18, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
B) 17, 15, 13, 12, 9, 9
C) 16, 14, 13, 13, 10, 9
D) 15, 15, 15, 11, 10, 9

Race: Only Humans. Please see Races of Men.

Class: Any from 1e PHB except assassins. No Unearthed Arcana except Barbarians.
The Bard's prerequisite scores are: Cha of 14, Wis and Dex of 12, Int and Str of 10.
The Barbarian's prerequisites are: Str of 15, Con and Dex of 13.

Starting XP: 2,502 points each.

Hit Points: Maximum for first level. You’ll roll the rest on the US dice roller. Re-roll 1s.

Alignment: No evil or chaotic neutral characters.

Starting GP: As per the players handbook, x2 due to your xp.

Starting Magic Items: One per character, a +1 item or equivalent. (Buy the weapon or armor with your starting gold, and then bestow the +1 upon it.)
Barbarians do not start with a magic item as per their restriction. They get a +1 to Str, Con or Dex instead. Player's choice.

Unseen servant dice roller will be used for tracking all rolls.
Campaign Code is 430.

The world is Conan's Age of Hyboria by Robert E. Howard.
I anticipate subterranean exploration, ferocious battles, weird mystery, and extraordinary character interaction.
Roleplay over rollplay.

I have a couple character concepts in mind... but I'm leaning thief.

(Sadly, I've already played Malak.)

I was leaning thief, but high dexterity without missile weapons seems like a waste, so no.

Instead...well, I have no idea. The "pick your set stats" thing throws me for a loop. Too many options. I do much better with roll 3d6 six times and take them in order. :D

I haven't been able to play a druid in ages, so that's a possibility. Shame barbarian/druid isn't a multiclass option. It seems like they'd go well together—sort of like a nature shaman.

Thieves can use slings and throwing daggers. Fighter/thieves can use bows. :)

Low level barbarians have restrictions against magic.
A Savage druid could be a nature shaman. Or a Northman druid, or Northman cleric/ranger. :)

Is my Atlantean cleric/magic-user able to cast magic spells in armor? Likewise can he use a dagger or is he forbidden from edged weapons?

I chose some starting spells, unless you have a different method like rolling in the DMG.

Ken: Yes, armor and dagger, just like a half-elf cleric/magic-user.

Spell selection is as per the PHB, p. 10.
Goniza has a 15 Int, and a 65% chance to know a spell. (Beyond Read Magic which he gets automatically.)

In the dice server, please roll "Comprehend Languages (65%): [1d100]"
Then roll "Protection from Evil (65%): [1d100]"
Etc. etc., for each spell you choose, in order of your priority, until you get 7, your minimum number, as per PHB p. 10.

Thanks.

Hello there.

So far, I am thinking about a Savage Ranger/Thief.

I will get something put together over the weekend.

Thanks for the invite, Inferno!

Comprehend Languages (65%): [1d100] = 89

Scratch that one off the list!

Sleep (65%): [1d100] = 78

No sleep!

Charm Person (65%): [1d100] = 3

Phew!

Magic Missile (65%): [1d100] = 81

Drat!

Spider Climb (65%): [1d100] = 30

So he's a charming spider-man?

Shield (65%): [1d100] = 12

At least he can defend himself against magic missiles.

More later.

Protection From Evil (65%): [1d100] = 28

Yeah he can memorize this one on his cleric list, but there's lots of competition for those slots.

Identify (65%): [1d100] = 49

Possibly some live carp swallowing in his future.

That's 5. 2 left.

Unseen Servant (65%): [1d100] = 2

Got the website's titular spell.

And last ...

Dancing Lights (65%): [1d100] = 18

Oops! 7 minimum probably includes read magic, so I'll drop protection from evil.

Goniza is ready. Um, assuming a footman's flail can be used one-handed. In my game, that's a two-handed weapon, but I know most DMs don't take that view.

Thanks, Ken. Footman's flail is one handed. Please calculate encumbrance and movement.
Also, with the magic item, you buy the mundane armor or sword with your starting gold, and chose to make it your +1 item. :)

Everyone else: Got an ETA on finished sheets? I'd love to start this game this week. Thanks!

Gotcha - backed off to banded. When it comes to encumbrance, in one part of the DMG it says magic armor is at half, in another part of the DMG it says magic armor is weightless. Where do you fall on that?

ETA is fuzzy ATM, unfortunately. I might have time to fill out an equipment list in the next few days, but I probably won't have time to think about a character description or background or such. Sorry.

Ken: The house rule on magic armor weight is here.
All magic armor has 25% the weight of non-magical armor.
That said, you might consider a magic shield? :)

Set a date to kick this thing off and exactly what you need to get going. As long as the basic character sheet is filled out, we're good to go, right?
