Men of the Hyborian Age (pc races)

#1 Post by Inferno »

“Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars.

"...Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyberborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west.” - Robert E. Howard

Races of Men:

For all Races of Men, basic characteristics still fall between the range of 3 and 18/00.

Hyborians: The dominant race of the Hyborian Age.

Image

Hyborians are normal men in all respects and receive no bonuses or multi-class abilities. Nor do they suffer penalties or restrictions to level advancement.

Aquilonians, Nemedians, Koths, Argosians, Brythunians and Corinthians are Hyborians. They are the progenitors of the Anglo-Saxons, the Carolingian Empire and the Roman Empire.

Northmen: Hearty, strong barbarians from the harsh lands of the north.

Image

Northmen receive a bonus of +1 to their initially-rolled Strength score, and a -1 to Intelligence.
(If the character's initially-rolled Strength is already 18, and he is a fighting man, then he may roll d100 twice for his strength percentile, and choose the higher of the two rolls.)

Northmen are experts with the axe, sword and spear, and receive a bonus of +1 "to hit" with these weapons.

A PC Northman may be a barbarian, cleric, druid, fighter, ranger, or thief.
He or she may also multi-class as a cleric/fighter, cleric/ranger, or fighter/thief.
Level limits are as follows: barbarian, no limit; cleric, 4th level; druid, 7th level; fighter, no limit; ranger, 11th level; thief, no limit.

Northmen speak their native tongue (i.e. Cimmerian, Aesir, Vanir) and Common. They may learn up to 2 additional languages.

Cimmerians, Aesir and Vanir are Northmen. They are the progenitors of the Celts and the Norse.

Savages may not begin play with metal armor, weapons or gear, but may use flint arrows, stone axes, etc. Their starting money is halved.

Verulians: Descendants of a lost, advanced civilization.

Verulians receive a bonus of +1 to their initially-generated Wisdom scores and a -1 to Charisma.

Blessed with long life, PC Verulians may elect to double their rolled age.

All Verulians wear ornate masks. Having lived their lives within the Great Pyramid in the city of Khemsa, all PC Verulians are albino and have a 30% chance to detect unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors in stone walls or floors, within ancient Verulian architecture only.

PC Verulians are further defined, and split, by their sect:
  • A Son of Osorus the Hawk may be a cleric, fighter, monk or paladin. He may also multiclass as a cleric/fighter.
Level limits are as follows: cleric, 9th level; fighter, no limit; monk, 9th level; paladin, 7th level.
+1 to Strength. -1 to Intelligence. +1 to hit with all swords.

A Warrior Maiden of Sekhmet the Lioness may be a fighter or monk. She may also multiclass as a cleric/fighter.
Level limits are as follows: cleric, 9th level; fighter, no limit; monk, 9th level.
+1 to Strength or Dexterity. -1 to Intelligence. +1 to hit with spear and javelin.

A Grand Magi of Uthoth the Ibis may be a cleric, druid, illusionist, magic-user or monk. He or she may also multiclass as a cleric/magic-user, illusionist/thief, or magic user/thief.
Level limits are as follows: cleric, no limit; druid, 7th level; illusionist, 9th level; magic-user, no limit; monk, 9th level; thief, 7th level.
+1 to Intelligence. -1 to Constitution. Able to cast one extra 1st level spell.

No PC may be of the Cult of Sutekh the Jackal or Zargoth the Destroyer.
The four ancient sects are bitterly divided by long-standing feuds.

Multi-classing Verulians may operate freely with the benefits of armor, weapons, and magical items. Any thieving is restricted to the armor and weaponry usable by the thief class.

Verulians speak only their native tongue, an antique form of Common. But they can read the hieroglyphic language of their ancient ancestors.

Verulians are rare. They now live only in the ruins of the lost city of Khemsa in the Great Eastern Desert. Verulians are the progenitors of Ancient Egypt.
