Day One
The Great Eastern Desert, the World of Hyboria
13th day of the month of Yuluk, 1279th year of the Age of Aquilonia
Dawn. Full moon, warm, clear, dry

Biblo finds it hard to pull away, to resist the long-dead language's esoteric allure. The sorcerer scholar considers an alternate translation for a key pictoglyph, and it results in ripples of new meaning cascading across the stone tapestry of the millennia. Suddenly, an unsettling undercurrent flows throughout. Instantly, metaphors and allusions are transformed, implying ancient and sinister secrets no man should know; offerings of unnameable sacrifices to indescribable gods.

"Come with me if you want to live," Arthfael tells Biblo.

Biblo looks up and finds he is alone. The libromancer blows out his candle and follows the dusky Cimmerian druid through the eerie ruins near the Sphinx (1).

Image

They escape these stone vestiges and enter an open clearing of dunes and dust (3). Ahead, they see Loche (4), moving east with speed. They hasten to reach him and Arthfael's mighty strides don't moderate their pace to accommodate the slower gait of the scholar. Biblo is left behind in the dust of the millennia.

As the staggered trio moves east, they see blood red sunlight slowly flow down the tremendous surfaces of the pyramids, backlighting their massive forms, and then descending into the ruins, bathing everything in crimson light.

Image

Arthfael catches up to Loche (near 5) and they suddenly see the other group ahead, in desperate straits!

Image

Moments earlier, Garrin, Goniza, Gronda and Roan (at 2) track the footprints southeast into the lost city of the ancients. They follow a river bed that's been bone dry for thousands of years, and approach the broken remains of a long wall (5). The world turns red with the dawn and they see Arthfael and Loche coming toward them from the west, with Biblo trailing far behind (near 4).

Suddenly, from the city of the dead emerge eight living shapes!

Nothing more than silhouettes at first, backlit by the rising sun; it takes a moment for the heroes to recognize them. They are men; more survivors of the sandstorm. Most had been caravan guards, hired wolves from a half dozen outlying nations. Not exactly friendly before, they had been on the opposing side of the heated argument in those final fatal moments of the caravan's existence. Now, starvation and thirst had transformed them into a pack of ravenous jackals. Scimitars bare, hollow-eyed and haunted, they shouted:

"Look! Their wineskins are full! They have water!"

One recognized Arthfael in the distance. "There's the one that led the mutiny against Zorello the Merchant, as the sandstorm broke upon us!"

"That witch demon brought the storm's wrath upon our caravan!"

The heroes' hearts fell as they realized there was a wizard among them! Amenhotu, a Stygian sorcerer who had been on an unholy pilgrimage from the dreaming kingdom of his birth to distant Vendhya. Amenhotu commanded, "Kill them. We shall sacrifice them to the Old Gods of this Dead City, that They may spare our lives!"

Image

"Perhaps the Old Gods have already answered our prayers, my friend," grinned Osak, a Hyrkanian nomad barbarian. "After all, we can quell our hunger with their flesh, and slake our thirst with their blood."

Image

The tactic of ambushing with the low sun at their back would be Osak's handiwork.

The heroes know them all by varying degrees:
  • Zhel, a Shemite mercenary with a sword as curved as his hook nose and blue-black beard
Shevata, a Zamoran thief, a dark skinned, dark-eyed rogue, dagger in his hand and guile in his heart
Chedaki, a Hyrkanian archer and Osak's henchman, this is the first time you've seen him off a horse
Thogg, a Cimmerian barbarian of no small strength and no great wit
Skuth, a Brythunian deserter from some defeated army
Khokegi, a silent Iranistani nomad, at home in the wastes
Desperate and emboldened by starvation, the jackal pack lunge forward with a sudden burst of speed, intending to dye these sands red permanently!

The top of the map is South. One square = 5 feet. All movement is halved due to the sand.
All black walls are impenetrable, and 13 feet tall. Broken pillars laying on the ground require a d20 Dex save to leap over.

Loche and Arthfael are 9" (90 feet) due west of the map's edge.
Biblo is 18" (180 feet) due west of the map's edge.
This area of the Lost City is so open, we'll consider it "outdoors." All spell and missile weapon ranges are multiplied by 3.[/ooc]

DM Notes:
The ambush attempt fails, I will rule, because the party was on alert and tracking them. Neither side is surprised.
But all eastward attacks are at -1, facing into the low, rising sun.

Garrin:

"These fiends have been driven mad by hunger and thirst! Mitra guide my blade!" The paladin unsheathes his long sword, its steel glinting in the early morning sun.

Garrin then maneuvers beside the broken pillar that lies before him in hopes that it will prevent him from being flanked, draws his blade across the already warming sands, and prepares for battle.

Arthfael steps forward and calls out to the sorcerer, who seems to be the leader—and perhaps the most dangerous. "We don't have to fight! We have enough water to share!"

Cast Charm Person or Mammal on the sorcerer.

Biblo sees strangers step out from the ruins. Steel glints as weapons are drawn. Biblo hurries to get closer, being too far for spells. If there are ruins or big stones to hide behind at 100' or less, he will stop and hide behind those.

Roan, Son of Rune

"Finally! Some blood to spill. Kill the Stygian and 'ware the Zamoran thief." Roan growls, hefting his spear. "Come on you dogs! Time to die!"

Roan takes six steps and hurls his spear at Thogg.
Spear ranged: [1d20+5] = 2+5 = 7, [1d6+5] = 4+5 = 9
Not that it matters, but I added the +5 to hit based on strength, dex, and barbarian ability. Is that right?
Winter is coming...

Knowing full well that the archer Chedaki is the most dangerous foe to them, Gronda fires two arrows at him as quickly as she can.

Attack w/ Longbow [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 Damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3 [1d20+1] = 17+1 = 18 Damage [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

Goniza goes back to take cover behind a wall; he does not have battle spells prepared. If the DM allows move and cast, he will cast protection from evil on himself.

"Looks like I picked a bad day to quit amphetamines," and he pops one.

Alright then he just takes cover. He's no good to anybody getting killed out there first thing. Once he casts protection from evil, he'll be sufficiently warded to get into melee, assuming at least some of these baddies are evil.

Desperate and emboldened by starvation, the jackal pack lunge forward with a sudden burst of speed, intending to dye these sands red permanently!

Image

A half dozen arrows suddenly whistle past Garrin, Gronda and Roan, fired from the horsebows of Khokegi the nomad (Kh), Chedaki the Hyrkanian archer (Ch), and Osak the barbarian (Os)!

Shevata the Sly (Sh) darts north across the sand with a dagger in his hand.

Image

The Zamoran thief disappears behind a timeless wall of the ancients.

Amenhotu (Am) the Stygian wizard, croaks black, forbidden syllables of unholy power as he weaves foul sorcery! "'Ai! 'Ai! Fhtagn! Kadishtu! Thanarak! Vulg'th! Zhro!"
Goniza the wise suddenly feels a stabbing pain in his heart! (-3 hp)

Zhel, the Shemite mercenary (Zh), Thogg the Cimmerian barbarian (Th), and Skuth the Brythunian warrior (Sk), pounce forward, desperate to close the gap between their hungry blades and their prey!

Biblo the libromancer and Loche the Pict thief see the battle erupt from a distance and hurry to get closer. The Zamoran arcanist pauses a moment to take cover behind an ageless, shattered wall. He feels its hieroglyphs calling out to him, asking to be read.

Garrin the Atlantean paladin bares his sword and charges forward, shrewdly placing a broken pillar between himself and his foemen!

Goniza the Atlantean sorcerer-priest retreats behind a crumbling wall and ingests a dried poultice to sooth his fraying nerves.

Roan the northern barbarian cries, "Come on you dogs! Time to die!" and hurls his spear with ferocity at Thogg of Cimmeria, missing him in the glare of the red sun!

Gronda the savage returns fire at Chedaki and her second arrow kills him instantly, impaling his left eye and entering the brain. His eye and mouth spray bright red blood as he falls dead upon the sands of the eternal city.

Arthfael casts a spell of unnatural magicks and then shouts at Amenhotu over the noise of the fray, "We don't have to fight! We have enough water to share!"
The Stygian sorcerer stiffens, squints at the Cimmerian druid in the distance, nods his understanding, and parts his broken, cracked lips as he readies to speak...

Loche, approaching from the west, continues to hurriedly approach, ultimately looking to take up position behind the broken wall alongside Goniza.

Garrin:

Garrin steps forward and asserts, "Hold! The earth-priest speaks true. Water we have, but we shall not stand idly by to be dishonored, and sharing with those harboring wicked hearts is not an option! Throw down your arms and yield, or find your fates!" Garrin holds his long sword and shield at the ready in case the dogs do not comply.

Arthfael cannot tell whether his words made a friend of the sorcerer or not. He walks forward while trying to keep one of the tall walls between himself and the sorcerer, just in case.

Roan, Son of Rune

The thrill of battle adrenalizes the Vanir barbarian and he brings his axe to bear on his Cimmerian foe. "RAAAWWWRRRR" he roars as his axe bites deep.
Battle axe: [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23, [1d8+5] = 3+5 = 8

Biblo Phile, arcanist

"By Ibis' heavenly teats!" Already blood is spilled. They're outnumbered until we arrive.

"Stay calm, stay calm." My feet pound the sand as I finally reach a fell wall closer to the fight.

"Focus. Focus." Arrows fly, a man falls. Yes the dark skinned man is Stygian! And that was a mystic missile he just fired.

I feel the beating inside my head. "Back Tarnak!" Close off the barbarian straining to break through. I take cover behind the ruin, drawing forth a pinch of sand. It is all around me, these cursed sands, but still I prefer my Zamoran soil. Quickly now - "sopor super vos sentio!" - concentrating on the new-comers.
Sleep spell.

Knowing full well what these crazed desert dogs will do to her if she is captured, Gronda does not attemp a parlay like the others.

The dark savage woman is deeply inspired by the ferocity of the northern giant. She fires two more arrows at the oncoming enemy (Zh) with even more deadly accuracy than her first shot.

Attack w/ Longbow [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 Damage [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5 [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15 Damage [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7
If her first arrow is a kill shot, she will fire the second arrow at Kh if possible

Image

Beneath the eternal uncaring gaze of the ancient stone colossi, more survivors of the doomed caravan, driven mad by hunger, heat and thirst, ambush our desperate heroes within the mysterious ruins of the Lost City!

100 feet beyond the fray, Arthfael the druid chants a spell of unnatural magicks and then shouts at Amenhotu from a distance, "We don't have to fight! We have enough water to share!"

Osak the nomad barbarian laughs blackly at this craven show of weakness. "And from a Cimmerian no less!"

But Amenhotu the Stygian sorcerer stiffens, squints at the druid in the distance, nods his understanding, and parts his broken, cracked lips and cries, “We don’t have to fight! They have enough water to share!”

“What?!” snarls Osak as he wheels toward the wizard.

Khokegi the Iranistani nomad, draws his bow again and the black feathers of his arrow graze the lash of his unblinking eye.

Image

He stoically reports, “The black woman's killed Chedaki!”

“No!” cries Osak. "Kill them!" The Hyrkanian horseman turns from the sorcerer and lets loose wrath and arrows at Gronda. Khokegi joins Osak's barrage as Amenhotu cries, “Wait! Stop!”

Four arrows whistle at Gronda and she avoids all but one, which was fired from the horsebow of vengeful Osak. Its insidious, barbed head impales her left forearm, grazes the bone and blasts out the other side in an eruption of bright crimson blood (-6 hp)!

Zhel, the Shemite mercenary...

...and Skuth the Brythunian deserter slow their attacks, confused by the conflicting words of Amenhotu and Osak.

But Thogg the Cimmerian has always possessed a simple clarity.

The massive barbarian snarls a savage curse and lunges at Roan with ferocious will! His long, cruel sword slices over the Vanir's head.

Meanwhile, Garrin the Atlantean paladin attempts to parlay with Skuth. The Brythunian warrior snorts, “Give over your water first, sniveling city man, and then we’ll show you our mercy!”

To the west, Biblo the libromancer realizes he is too far to attempt to ensorcel the would-be ambushers, and hurries to join the battle.

Loche the Pict thief and Arthfael the dark druid continue their race across the sands as well, moving into the bright, rising sun. Loche (Lo) reaches the shadowed wall where Goniza seeks cover. He sees the sorcerer-priest of Nemedia utter ancient words of power from lost Atlantis, weaving a spell of protection upon himself.

On the other side of that wall, in the heart of the battle, Roan, son of Rune, roars as he murderously hacks his axe into Thogg! The heavy blade crashes along the dark barbarian's thick skull, gouging his forehead and cutting his left ear off! The fell-handed blow would have killed a lesser man. But not Thogg of Cimmera. He smiles through the pain and the blood.

Gronda the fierce Zembabweian savage, knowing full well what these crazed desert dogs will do to her if she is captured, takes no chances and fires two more arrows with deadly accuracy...

Image

Zhel the Shemite is caught just below his curved blue-black beard. He dies choking on a flint arrowhead and his own blood.

Khokegi the nomad archer is fatally impaled in the bowels by the other arrow of the unerring, merciless Gronda. The Iranistani dies in a spray of blood and shit as he writhes on the red sand floor of the patient, nameless city of the ancients.

Garrin Locke:

Responding to the uncouth Brythunian, "Very well. You were given fair chance to avoid bloodshed; now there will be no quarter. Know that you have chosen death, cur! Come and taste my steel! Anticipating that Skuth will leap over the fallen pillar that lies between them, Garrin places most of his weight onto his back leg in a defensive posture and anxiously awaits the barbarian's attack.

Garrin wields his blade in a deadly arc at the blasphemer.

Re: Chapter 1: Shallow Grave of Sand

#60 Post by OGRE MAGE »

Gronda grits her teeth, trying to deal with the pain from the arrow that just ripped through her arm. She does not cry out, refusing to let her enemy know about the great deal of agony that he has caused her.

She notices little in the way of help from most of the men that she is supposedly allied with, making her even more angry. She falls to one knee, hoping it will make her a smaller target. She fires 2 more arrows from her bow at the disgusting pig that is still shooting at her.(Osak) Her pain, the sun in her face, her anger, and dropping down to the sand all contribute to her far less accurate shots at the dangerous archer adversary.

Attack w/ Longbow [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 Damage [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7 [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8 Damage [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5

She then awaits her fate, not regretting in the least her choice to eliminate three of the oncoming enemy so far. If these bad men find her more of a threat than the males in her group, that seems to her an even more fitting way to die.
