XIII. Goblin Halls: Third Trip

We can continue to play out what happens back in Brighton, but I also want to keep the main action moving. I will also need Vernon to be completed pretty quickly here if he's meant to rejoin the group for this venture (and I will also need to know where he will fit into the existing marching orders).


Back Again
Aided by their natural infravision, Junius and Dimly once again lead the group down the long stretch of the main passageway before reaching the first branch to the right. They recall, this right passage contained a guard post, and an unexplored area beyond.

Straight ahead is the moss room, the cave in, plus the area where the prisoners were rescued and the torturer killed.

The humans in the group quickly find themselves struggling to move safely without the benefit of vision as they find themselves in complete darkness.

At the Door
Junius turns at this first right hand branch. He passes the next right hand turn, past the previously cleared out guard room, which a quick inspection reveals is still vacant, before coming upon yet another branch off to the right. Junius investigates this new corridor 35- or 40-feet until it ends at a familiar solid oak door, but unlike the one leading into the torturer's chamber, this one, like all others discovered, has a handle.

The dwarf listens at the door and does not hear any sounds coming from the other side.

AdaRue, Canun, Horatio, and Rainey still can not see in the darkness.

AdaRue stands at the corner, holding her lantern aloft, shedding light for the humans.

Unable to see to help, Vernon waits at the T-intersection in lantern light. His bow is ready. Goblins can see in this blackness? It's a lot darker in here than I thought. Colder too, for that matter.

Sacro moves up toward Junius and prepares to open the door for Dimly and Junius to rush in. Junius holds his bow with an arrow ready to flow.

Training Room
Once everyone is in position, with weapons readied, Sacro creeps forward and quickly pushes the door open and makes way for Junius and Dimly to hold rank up front.

When the solid oak door does swing open and light spills into the area beyond, a faint moaning sound is heard. Inside, the dwarves observe five wooden posts mounted to crude wooden platforms, and a weapons rack against the left wall holds numerous spears and wooden practice swords.

A crudely-drawn diagram of a human shape adorns the southern wall -- the diagram shows red target marks in various dangerous locations: the neck, the heart, the head, and private area.

On each of the wooden posts sags a body, riddled with small spear holes. One of the bodies (Prisoner #3) appears to be clinging precariously to life, and is the source of the moaning sound.

Sacro will quickly move over to the seemingly alive prisoner and attempt to free him.

Well, just keep thinking, and soon you'll know what to do before its already done. I will say,
I think we need to recruit a few townsmen to come with us next time. Maybe they can caravan back any more prisoners we find. No telling how many there are down here.

AdaRue steps forward. I can offer this poor man healing. Perhaps he won't need to return right away.She waits until Dimly gives the all-clear before entering. Once that is done, she pays over the torturer man. His wounds are most grave and resist healing, to be sure.

Cure Light Wounds [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2 :roll: that is the light spell spent.

Horatio nods in approval. "Hey, good idea. We could send them into rooms ahead of us to make sure they're safe."

Sacro quickly enters the room and begins to free the wounded man, and is assisted by Dimly. "Huh. Maybe I should have checked for traps before people wandered into the room,"Horatio quips to himself, drawing a look of cynicism from Junius, who moves to inspect the weapons rack along the far wall and manages to scavenge 12 spears and 6 wooden short swords.

Once given the all-clear, AdaRule prays over the wounded man. While the benefactor of divine healing, and feeling slightly rejuvenated, the man's injuries prove to be severe. "Name's Rothal," he offers weakly, and shares that he is a Warden of Brighton that failed in his mission to look for a group of missing recruits. The group cannot tell which he finds more painful: His actual, physical injuries or the shame of being captured and used as a practice dummy before locating any of the missing recruits.

The other four wooden posts hold nothing but dead corpses -- three humans and one dwarf -- some, from their smell, have been absent life for longer than the others. Rothal confirms that they were all imprisoned before he was, and none of them are from Brighton. He didn't even get to know any of their names. All the prisoners, including Rothal, have been stripped of all possessions and wear only loose, ill-fitting breeches.

Rothal will remain and answer any questions the group may have for him, but otherwise insists that he be allowed to return home, which he is confident he can do without escort if given one of the weapons from the rack Junius claimed. "Maybe we need to recruit a few townsmen to come with us next time., so they can caravan back any more prisoners we find," Junius says. "No telling how many there are down here," he adds. Rothal's spirits improve once he learns that the group previously rescued and returned Gord, and only deepens his resolve to return home. It isn't a voiced opinion, but the group suspects Rothal is not fond of the decision of recruiting his townspeople to serve as prisoner escorts... or even more dangerous tasks.

After the group decides what to do with Rothal in response to his request to be allowed to leave, Canun suggests that the group remain where they are and allow the goblins to come to them. The room they're in now is kind of out of the way, and likely won't see much traffic, but goblins are almost certainly set to return to the area once they're ordered to practice.

Junius suggests they burn the wooden spears/weapons and move out. They wont know where to go until they start looking, anyway.

AdaRue shushes Horatio. Rothal, you might well make it, but it doesn't need to be right now. We are likely to find more poor souls, and they will need your leadership for the trek back.
Stay with us a bit farther, see if we don't find those scouts you were looking for.
If he chooses to stay, she will offer more healing and ask the others to offer clothes
