"I have a couple of acquaintances at the temple I can talk to. Perhaps I can persuade them to accompany me as they did before". replies Piers.

Recruitment [2d6] = 7 [2d6] = 4 [2d6] = 6

Piers consults with Rowine and Crowgar, both willing to set out with him once more. :)

Lug whips his head around so fast it seems like he might break something. "Did someone say dragon hunt? I'm in!"

"As I remember, Rowine is a good hand with a bow, and Crowgar a swordsman. Both are faithful followers of Baudh". Piers grins. "Now that our numbers are swelling, perhaps others will see that this is not such a forlorn hope after all".

21 July 2021
In the early afternoon of 21 July, Fingers, Markd, Bandy, Hengiest, and Allmond return from the east with a wagon-full of gold and silver items. It attracts a lot of attention as they pass through the streets, finally arriving to exchange them in the Wooden Keep with the Usurer. They're able to join the others in the tavern by evening.

After a quick drink, Bandy heads out to find an armourer or smithy who can resize his banded mail...

Foxy O'Hare

"My apologises Baxtaw for I concede it may not be best to accompany you on the raid on Scatha's lair.
I fear I have offended the Blackhelm's clan and their support of you may clash with their antipathy to myself. I wish you godspeed, health and success in the endeavour."

She drains an ale and announces that should any riders wish to explore the alleged ruins of Zhint alongside a party of the Duke's troopers, they depart in the morning from the city gates.

The young farm girl, Clarabelle, enters the Tavern and approaches Baxtaw, whom she had met once while still living on the Farrow's farm. Lacking much modesty, she speaks to him at the bar, loudly enough to be overheard. Umm. Hi, Baxtaw. Clay wanted me to talk with you. He says he never much liked coming to town, but even less now that he's a badger. He says he's done what he can to directly stymie Scatha, but he also cares about the folks here. He asked me to offer you two scrolls to Resist Fire, which he thought you'd think was useful, what with Scatha breathing flames, and all. He also had three or four Potions of Healing he might spare. The scrolls are 250 gold, each; or 425 for the pair. The potions go for 45 gold each - or three potions for 120 gold. Four for 160 gold.

I just revisited the costs of making a clerical scroll - 100gp/level. Resist Fire is level 2. Small mark up. ;) The Healing potions are being offered a bit cheaper than those found at the Temple of Baudh, but they work the same. If other characters overhear Clarabelle, they are free to offer to buy things as well.

*bump*
Please finish up any last conversations between groups while you're all in town. I'll then move the clock ahead from the 21st, as parties are departing on the 22nd and 23rd.

I'll let him know, but it isn't likely. He says we need to go north. And let me know if you change your mind about any of these things.

Dram, you're welcome to haggle a bit, if you'd like. ;)

Piers indicates that he would be willing to contribute to a group effort to purchase the scrolls or the potions, but since this is only his second adventure, he would only be able to throw 20gp into the pot.

Evening, 21 July 2021
After a rousing evening in the tavern, business and conversation begins to quiet down as adventurers prepare to depart town in coming days.

Blackjack Amistad receives sanction from the ArchDuke for a settlement in the northern forest, given he can establish security.

A swarthy man-at-arms wearing the sigils of the Order of Baudhil joins the tavern crowd as his companions visit the Wooden Keep, other merchants, and set up a camp outside of town. The man buys the two scrolls and four potions from Clarabelle to benefit Baxtaw's mission.

Morning, 22 July 2021

Foxy visits Lord Albrecht first thing in the morning to propose a mounted exploration mission.

Foxy O'Hare and three mounted bowmen depart early, riding northwest towards Beith's Watch on an exploratory mission.

There is a stir in the town as Bremen, dressed in livery and accompanied by men-at-arms, approaches the Wooden Keep. They are transporting a large mask of solid gold as a gift to the ArchDuke and enter his audience chamber. After Bremen swears fealty to the ArchDuke and announces the presence of the Order of Baudhil guarding Gaul from east of the river, he returns to the encampment of soldiers outside of town.

Adventurers prepare, resizing armor, buying steeds, and gathering supplies today.

Morning, 23 July 2021

Baxtaw departs for the Dragon's Lair, accompanied by Lug, Dorbeck from I'did'dum, Piers Garret from the Church of Baudh and his men-at-arms Rowine and Crowgar. Lord Commander Bremen decamps his retinue, part of them following as well.

Blackjack Amistad heads north along the river from his lumber mill at the Frogmorton Ford, accompanied by Willow of Fairweather and Clay Weatherwax, both clerics of Beith, as well as Achaedany, Annabelle, and a menagerie of faithful animals. Rumor says they wish to make a treaty with ogres, rather than slaying them.

21 July
Prior to his departure with Baxtaw and Company, Lord Commander Bremen pays Hyde a visit, discussing the establishment's lack of an outhouse. Seems like a place that sells alcohol and food might do well to have something associated with it. It'd cut down on the line of drunks pissing in the alleyway out back. I'm thinking of a wood structure, built over a deep pit. Six separate stalls with a step or two to get up.

I'd be happy to foot the bill, if you'd like. But I'd like to name it.

One 8'x12' structure, slightly elevated with a deep pit beneath. The building would be divided into six 4'x4' outhouses, each with their own latching door.

After two days of resting, meditating and transcribing spells in her room, Winnie leaves to take a long walk in the park near the Temple of Gwanwen. She returns in the evening and joins the locals and adventurers in the common room, listening to the bard weave stories. She admits that he isn't half bad before asking him to borrow his lyre. She tunes it into a minor-sounding, modal key and begins to sing the tale of her recent adventure. She tries to eliminate the taint of her own beliefs from the story, attempting to fashion it to the pleasures of the gathered crowd, but a lifetime spent among nature-witches, and her recent death and resurrection drive the song where it will.

Her song plaintively sets the stage (a town whose supply trains are frequenlty raided by bands of goblins), and introduces each character of the story: The experienced mage, Earc. The devout priest of Gwanwen, Issachar. The stout dwarf fighters, Drunil and Funil, father and son, and Olaf Olaffson-son-son-son, whose name threatens to turn the tale into a comedy, but she expertly reigns it back and speaks of the others. The two willworkers of the Sisterhood of Twilight, Bianca and Winnie. And the brave halfling, Halfpint.

The song flows through the days of walking in the woods and under the earth. She sings about skirting ragtag highwaymen and later, the ancient, impregnable dwarf fortress because it is held by traditional foes of the "civilized races." She tells of the cheery squirrels that reside to the south of the Tower, willing to lead the party away from the wolves, toward a secret entrance. And how that entrance was guarded by a pack of gnolls, overcome with magic and melee. Her song includes the blood-filled spa and the fierce-fear in the gnolls eyes, unwilling to leave the place peacefully. And as the party passed deeper into darkness, her song does the same, talking of the frightened goblin drawings, foretelling a portal to the Plane of Fire and the demon within, liquefying corpses and a Black Pudding of Devastation. How, unasked for, her life was gifted back to her with the Rod of Moradin, which is now returned to the Temple of Moradin and Gwanwen at Idmi d'dum.

As Winnie sings of the party's decision to return to Gaul before seeking more in the bowels of the dwarf fortress, tension builds in the song, foreshadowing the tale's end. Minor chords ring out as the return trip is stymied by the ragtag highwaymen - humans - who had laid an ambush. Three of the party cut down in seconds. But the tone of the song changes, shifting to the major fifth as she sings of Earc's spell on the Captain, Issachar's felling of horse and rider, Funil bravely defending his wounded son, Halfpint's well places arrows, a nine-foot tall Olaf, and Bianca's show of defiant rage, promising spells of death and destruction. The song resolves with the the highwaymen losing heart and fleeing, returning to the melancholy again as Halfpint and Issachar tend to the wounded with prayers and potions.

Regardless of the crowd's reaction, Winnie is pleased with the saga. It tells hope, tested by dark horrors and impossible decisions. It speaks to the strength of standing together in the wilds in order to survive.

54sp deducted for a common room and good meals x9 days.

Olaf follows Winnie into the tavern and orders a pint of the stout (-1 sp). When she starts singing, he slouches in his chair, hoping she will leave out certain details, or at least gloss over the bloodier aspects of how the gnolls were defeated. He is glad, however, when her song does not dwell in much detail on how the party came across the goblin drawings. And he smiles wistfully at the memory of towering over all the bigguns. He needs to get him a potion like that again, he decides.

One week of:
Common room lodging: 3s 5c
Good meals: 3g 5s
Stabling: 7s
Total: 4g 5s 5c

"Ha! HA!" guffaws Hyde at Bremen's proposal. "You can name the shitter whatever you want, if'n you make it smell better. Don't have your men soil their white surcoats digging it out!"

[1d20] = 3 tale

The townsfolk sigh wistfully at the narrative, then afterwards look with respect on the wizards and dwarf. "Real good, helping the caravans like that," old.men say, slapping Olaf on his back.
