'Blackjack' Amistad

As an instinctive reaction to the ferocious attack, the lumberjack goes back to his tribal roots and uses his ancestral totem to intone the 'Fear' aspect, standing in an aggressive manner and pumping his chest. His second thoughts are that the echo might reverberate around the cavern and tunnels bringing unwanted attention but then half-hybrids are not unusual here so a cave lion cross breed might not be so unusual for the Morlocks to hear.

If he can also attack, he will swing with his axe, Axe melee [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14 Axe damage [1d8+2] = 1+2 = 3

"Ach! It be bashin' time!" says Olaf, a little too glad to be in a fight again. He grabs his chain and whips the end of it at the nearest beetlebear.

Chain (THAC0 19): [1d20+2] = 10+2 = 12 [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6 (Entangle on 19-20)

Earc

Earc whips out a quick sleep spell, targeting the largest bug-bear that attacked him and as many of the others as he can.

Sleep affects one 4+1 HD or [2d8] = 9

OOC: Bug-bear... lol

Also, apologies. I scanned the post too quickly and incorrectly thought there were just one or two juvenile creatures left in action. So I was going to throw a dart at it. Then I re-read it and realized there were five creatures in action, with a very large one targeting him still! So that's why he is casting sleep. If that's OK...

Blackjack Amistad grabs his totem and roars, a deep guttural emanation from in his chest meant to terrify the flying bear-like insectoids before him. One of his foes whines in terror, reversing course awkwardly on his stubby insect wings and beelining into the enveloping darkness of the cavern beyond. The other, however, catches Amistad's arm in a vicious bite (-6), leaving the warrior severely wounded as he continues to face his foe.

Earc's incantation lilts off his tongue as he flings sand into the air at the approaching bug-bears. The largest creature coming in for a second bite at him instead crashes loudly to the ground as it drops past Earc and into the midden heaps beyond. The two creatures about to feast on Achaedany's prostrate and bleeding form also drop into enchanted slumber before they can do their deed - a momentary reprieve as the pool of blood around her on the floor continues to spread wider.

Olaf flings forth his chain, trying to ensnare one of the two remaining foes, who both are making for Akkara. The second largest dives at the female guardsman, who meets its dive with a fierce snarl and curl of her lip, her longsword punching through the bear-beast's viscera. (-8, critical) The bear-bug lunges down on the sword, snapping its massive mandibles on Akkara's clavicle as its last act before death. (-6) Akkara and the creature lie entangled on the ground, both fading to death. The other bug-beast tries to right itself after impacting the wall, but its wings are too injured. It loses its balance and corkscrews downward as its wings fail to regain control, impacting on the cavern floor below with a wet crash followed by silence.

(Amistad still faces a foe. Three are asleep. Akkara and Achaedany are both bleeding out. Next round!)

Earc

"Olaf, help Blackjack! I'll try and stabilize the others."

Earc rushes to stabilize Achaedany first. Then he will move to help Akkara if he can. Once they are both stable, he will help put down the sleeping bug-bears.

Is the chain a ranged weapon for purposes of firing into melee? Or is it a melee weapon?

Good question. I think the former is more interesting. It is a 10' ranged weapon, usable in melee.
Treating it that way means you win initiative ties (ranged before melee) and spinning it in group combat has issues.

Not wanting to risk entangling Blackjack with the chain, Olaf switches to his trusty pick-axe and attacks the remaining bear-bug combatant.

Pick Axe (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6 [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

"Ungh. Shoulda stuck with the chain."

Blackjack's axe intersects the last bug-bear with a 'crack', dropping the creature to the ground in a furry heap. The cavern is abruptly silent once more, all humming of giant beetle wings abated.

Earc stabilizes Achaedany and Akkara, bandaging their bite wounds and preventing further blood loss. It will be at least a few hours before either can be safely healed without significant magical healing.

You all efficiently dispatch the slumbering bug-bears, their large and furry forms taking up a significant portion of the floor, now.

"Better hole up here," says Olaf. He checks the bear-bugs for any valuables. "Wonder if them furry hides be worth aught." He carefully peers again over the cavern wall to make sure there are no more threats from that side.

Once the Bear-Bugs are sorted out, and the two wounded are cared for, Earc goes back to the trash piles and pulls out the gold scraps he'd previously noted, keeping an eye out for anything else of value that might be in the trash.

The party resigns itself to resting here until their companions might recover.

Olaf considers the smelly beasts hides. Where they are sizable bears, the addition of hairless and chitinoid insect morphology into the hide likely decreases their value for resale.

Earc finds a wide array of disgusting offal in the mounds - moldy and torn clothing items, broken wooden furniture pieces, rotting food scraps - but also finds metal items mixed among them. He finds gold and silver buttons, broken bracelets, bent needles, and odd-ends of ingot rods. Fishing through the piles, you gather together more than three sacks-worth of silver items and more than three sacks-worth of golden items (200lbs each).

A few hours pass as you work, collecting up the valuables. You're alerted to the sound of approaching footfalls in the hallway and low voices. They pause about 90' into the hallway's darkness -- the change in tone implies they noticed you as well. They're whispering among themselves.

Earc motions for everyone to stay back and out of sight.

Then he takes a sip from a flask and disappears from sight...

Olaf steps as quietly as he can to somewhere concealed and readies his crossbow.

'Blackjack' Amistad

it may be then that this dark half room was used as the Bug-bear lair or nest? We'll have to keep the girls off the floor, using the stone tables. He would push the beetle hides to the lip of the cavern ledge. I have heard regarding some beetles that their eyes may be used for lamp light, is that just fire beetles? To make a bear fly, those wings must create a lot of thrust and lift. maybe we should take some Earc and find an aviator apprentice to create apparatus to make a wingsuit?

hearing the approach of the unknown folk, Amistad will take a guard at the tunnel mouth and look down trying to determine who what has found us. Can I identify the whispers at all?

Blackjack has helped arrange the girls on the stone tables so they rest more easily while Earc filtered the midden heaps. The two women still look pale, but at least are comfortable as the group bedded down. Blackjack hauls the six bugbear corpses to the lip of the ledge but doesn't push them over, instead inspecting them for useful components and antecedents. He doesn't notice any glowing of their eyes, but wizards want the strangest things as spell components...

As the noise is heard in the hallway, Olaf slips into the cover and shadows, readying his crossbow, while Earc takes a sip of potion and fades from view, becoming invisible. Earc's glowing piece of driftwood flings down the hallway, bouncing to a rest about 60' in.

At the edge of the light you see a group of seven Morlocks, abruptly startled by the light. They seem dubious of the light, which confirms that your party lies ahead of them. They continue to whisper among themselves.

Olaf fires a crossbow bolt nowhere near the Morlocks.

Olaf's crossbow bolt ricochets down the hallway, the Morlocks words abruptly turning to a tone of alarm shortly before they all reduce to a somnolent murmur and all seven abruptly slump over, fast asleep.

Earc suddenly appears when his sword slips into the gullet of one of the morlocks. He quietly and quickly finishes them all off with a single thrust of the sword to the throat before checking their bodies for anything of value.

Then he asks the others for help in dragging them over to the edge of the ravine, to get them out of the way.
