Expedition - Foxy: Bounty On The Goblin HQ - 02 June 2021

The pair returns up the passage and rejoins Shortbread at the campfire. They resolve to wait for Foxy to wake and for Clay and Grizzly to arrive. Over two hours pass, their eyes drooping with exhaustion as they force themselves to remain awake and on guard, especially as Foxy snores restfully next to you. Their effort bears fruit, however, as they are alert enough to hear a scraping in the tunnel and to see the scaly humanoid appear in the mouth of the tunnel. It steps out and spots you at the same time you spot it. It emits a vicious snarl.

Halfpint, knowing the end is near for them and seeing no way to escape safely, fires a severely misguided arrow toward the lizard.

Half-pint and Baxtaw both send arrows clattering across the limestone cavern, but neither is close to the one troglodyte it grins wickedly and flees back down the passage.

What do they know about the surrounding area around the cave? We probably should look for a place to move for safety until we rest and the others arrive

You're a mile and a half from the goblin kingdom, the outside forest is patrolled by wolves and wargs this close. You also expect your companions after dark when goblins are more active as well. It is unknown how the dragon now changes their normal patterns.

That said, you are discovered here. It would be statistically less likely you'd be discovered outside.

Halfpint will quietly check the nearby surroundings for a suitable safe spot to camp. if she finds one, she will return to let them know and to leave clues for the others to find them.

Half-pint finds a suitable clearing outside in a patch of woods among the rolling hills. Baxtaw, Half-pint and Shortbread get Foxy moved out and situated leaving markers so that Clay and Grizzly will be able to find them.

Not long after, Foxy wakes. She is weak and wounded but able to converse (still 0hp, can't fight).

The afternoon passes and dusk comes early in the let of the massive mountains nearby to the South. The shadows are growing long as you hear the baying howls of a wolf pack tracking prey. You see none of the grey furred animals running down your camp, so intent on their hunt that you can neither escape or dissuade them in time.

weakly sitting up, back against a tree."I have three remaining flasks of oil in my satchel. take them to create a circle to ward off the wolves." she says to the others.

Can she at least draw the balefire scimitar and light the oil with it? Thinking all she has to do is limply touch the blade to the oil to set the course on fire.

I'll wait to see how much of the oil ring Foxy could do at 0 hp before posting for halfpint.

I will let Foxy pour an oil line while Baxtaw and Half-pint shoot arrows (or something else) during the approach.

Halfpint takes a quick shot as soon as she sees the eyes of one of the majestic canines coming toward them.

We set no trap at the passage? Sorry I been out for the last few days. My interenet was out.

Baxtaw Let us move back to Shortbread. We should attempt to set a trap for it or build a fire in front of opening. Wait for the others to return to battle it. I will not survive a battle with that thing.

The wolf pack bears down on the group, their slathering jaws hungry for flesh. Shortbread and Foxy hurry, pouring out three vials of oil in a circle big enough to surround the group and their small campsite. Baxtaw and Halfpint each fire, sinking shafts into their the forequarters of one of the canine beasts, both beasts falling behind and ultimately collapsing as they reach the next trial.

Foxy ignites the oil - a line of fire flares up around the entire perimeter. The wolves are undeterred, diving forward through the flames, each yelping or snarling as flame singes their fur and burns their feet (damage to each). A third wolf collapses, crying out as it subcumbs to the the flame's wounds.

Six wolves reach the group of huddled, injured companions. Two of the wolves dive at Baxtaw, but their teeth fail to find purchase through his armor. One bites viciously at Foxy, tearing open a gaping wound on her thigh (-6); shock overtakes her and she swoons again into unconsciousness. Two other wolves dive forward and overbear the short bearded dwarven baker as well; he goes down with a scream as they rip his flesh to shreds (-5, -6), in just that short moment he is almost beyond recovery.

holy crap... not only wolves but 9 of them?

Questions:
Is there a place where Halfpint and Baxtaw can realistically reach to get away in one round (a tree for instance)
Is there a place at the end of the fire where either could run around and force the wolves back through it?

Sure - there is a large evergreen within your camp/flame circle which you could scurry up. Pass a Dex check (roll [1d20+2] and get under your Dex) and it gives the +2 bonus to the wolves to hit for you fleeing if you lose initiative. This also leaves Foxy and Shortbread to die...

(ok... she'll hope for a miraculous morale fail)

She quickly (probably too quickly) fires off another arrow at one of the wolves left in the inner circle.

(if for some reason she cannot fire her arrow, she will use her sword, but completely, laughably bad)
