The party begins to ascend the back stair, finding that stairs are much more arduous goinup than coming down, especially when heavily laden. The stairs are as expected - curling ever upward story after story with only the occasional rest alcove but no side tunnels.

Foxy leads at the front and C'ang with her as he is the last to still hunger for battle. behind them are Clay and Morrs, who are the most hale (given their miraculous circumstances) but both struggle awkwardly on the stairs with their quadruped legs. Baxtaw, Halfpint, and Shortbread come next with their injuries while Grizzly Woman brings up the rear, protecting the whimpering bear.

After 40 minutes you judge that you are about halfway up and you find goblins ahead of you in a rest alcove and sitting on the stair. They are burly for their kind, but look like smiths more than soldiers. They wear heavy leather aprons and have hammers, pokers, and tongs close at hand, staring at you indifferently.

Shortbread, if they try to attack us, unfurl the banner, says Clay in a low voice. To Ms. O'Hare, he adds that bartering their way out with copper might be the way to go. I could try approaching them, if you want. Maybe they would even guide us out in exchange for food and copper.

“Coin?” C’ang whispers, watching the fattened smith goblins with intent. “I say we buy them with steel!”

He grips his axe with a both hands, stepping toward the side. “But then again they don’t even look like warriors. No fun in that.” He looks to Foxy intently, saying ‘your call’.

Halfpint mentally goes through the process of firing an arrow and grabbing her sword, just in case a battle begins. She knows none of them are capable of handling a single blow back. Maybe words would be best. Is she the best talker in the group? She cant remember.

Foxy O'Hare

"Look you little green arsed f%*kers. I promised your King and foul priest Dmukaz that I, Foxy, Flame of the North would come back and take revenge for kidnapping those girls in the Farrow Farm raid. Henceforth, I have killed your king by sticking this balefire sword up his anals, we melted his hellhound with a fiery glance and decapitated your priest before wrapping his steaming entrails around the balcony archers and dangling them to choke slowly in their own bile fluids. We have freed the gully dwarf prisoners who are now stretching new goblin skins over their war drums and summoned the Grim Reaper in red scaly fire breathing form to wreak death and destruction upon your mortal, frail and soon to be crispy hell bound souls. You can either stay here and end up has bear shit or leave now.!"

Foxy politely asks the goblins to kindly move on and trouble us not... :)

It only take Clay the Badger-Druid a moment to recall his new shape. He edges forward, along with Morr. The two, furry, fanged creatures emit low, menacing, discordant growl of warning to the goblins, punctuating Ms. O'Hare's threat/promise of non-violence. Maybe someone will offer them a temporary position as hirelings, he hopes.

I think Halfpint has the better CHA here. Maybe a job offer? We could use the warm bodies as meat shield, maybe...

Halfpint rolls her eyes. She addresses the goblins,
" We will gladly leave you in peace, with the expectation of course that you will work toward improving relations. We are also willing to purchase some hired hands for the next day or so if any of you fine upstanding folks would be able. We'll pay in coins and be discreet as well.

The Grizzly Woman doesn't bother letting the orcs know that the bear is growling in pain and not hunger.

She continues to scan down the stairs, ensuring that the party has a head up if they become surrounded.

Foxy's non-nonsense tone -- backed up as she is by a snarling hound, a giant badger, a bear, a bloodthirsty dwarf, and two knocked bows -- elicits respect from the goblins. They shift off the stairs into the alcove to make room for the party's superior strength. "Of course, of course... been a while someone killed the king," says one to you in Common, but another interjects. "Naw, they just killed him again last gloaming, didn't they?" Some light argument ensues in the Goblin tongue, then they break off and look back to the group. "No harm from us in any case, though, righ'? We're all fleeing that dragon, I'd say, or wouldn't be coming up the back stair." He smiles.

Halfpint offers payment for their aid, which is well received. The eight of them will join your entourage for a fair rate in coin, paid daily. They eye your carried coffers, eager to make the deal as they can see that you're good for it. (8gp/day for 8 goblin light infantry, p.48) "No problem with that... boss."

Baxtaw- If there wasn't a dragon down below I'd say we load up more of them coffers. Let us find our Ogre friends.

Foxy O'Hare

"As long as these goblins understand we can just as easily load up eight more coffins!", Foxy takes the stairs and the route out.

The goblins take the lead, chattering in front of Foxy. Finally the stairs open back up into a hallway, the humans and halfling grateful for the pitch dark stairwell now giving way to some dim torchlight spilling from the open doorways. The goblin escort alternately brags and threatens those in the room ahead of you as you catch up. "No worries, boss! They respect your flaming power!" the one with the warty nose says as you reach him. You see goblins through the archway in a sparring room, armed and equipped - they watch dubiously as you pass but do not come out to confront you.

Wartnose leads on and you proceed up the final steps, past the blocked sun-dried doors, through the oil fire scorched section of stairs, and finally out the top into the evening air with your heavy coffers. The dead skeletons still like in the grass from a few hours ago, though it seems like days. There is no sign of the skeletons which Clay scared off.

(It has been 36 hours since you rested, you currently have a -1 penalty.)

Halfpint quietly suggests to the other adventurers that they need rest, and wonder if they need to pay and dismiss their guards.

The badger nods. Then speaks. Pay them for half a day's service, then move on. We have a few hours of daylight left to find our hirelings and pack animals. Once the sun sets, wargs and goblins will pour out of that cave in search of new homes. We will want to be on our way before that happens. He is torn between rest, which will allow him time to pray, and pushing back to Gaul.

Foxy O'Hare

Nice to feel the evening sun on our faces. With less stealth we could make the retainers cave in a couple of hours. After the red dragon devastating the place, the goblins and wargs will consolidate somewhere new, we should make use of their confusion and move on while we can.

The Grizzly Woman whispers, "I agree that is what we need to move on to the retainer's cave. It is only a couple of hours more and resting here just gives us more of a chance of finding goblins who will not be bought. I say we pay off our guards now instead of later, so that they cannot come back here and tell their friends where we are."

Having escaped the mountain with the aid of the goblin workmen, the group decides to cut them loose and head onward. They are paid for the day, which they accept as fair, and disappear into the brush of the mountainside.

Someone subtract 8gp.

Having chosen the rear stair, you first must traverse around the mountain back to the side with the entrance (which took 4 hours yesterday, unladen) and then go 2.5 miles onward to where you left the hirelings with the mounts. Hefting your coffers, you begin the trek around the mountain's slope.

Night falls and you continue in the near-dark, knowing you have a long march to reach the dwarfhome's front gates, then onward to the cave with your retainers. These strange northern lands have given you at least some form of a gift - as the townsfolk prepare celebrate the Sun's Crest Festival back in Gaul, you give thanks that the persistent twilight which gives a dim illumination to your sleepless march. (-2 penalty for dim light for the humans, currently) You hear the howl of wolves and pause cautiously at each strange rustling, but you make it around the mountain's slope unmolested, treasure coffers still in hand, after the sun has risen and begun its trek up into the sky.

You look down over the mountain's shoulder at the palisades below, the site of the battle where you left Thundred and the ogres. You see that most of the palisade is now smashed, a large chunk of it smoldering and burned as well. No goblins stand guard upon it, or anywhere that you can see.

Outside the palisade, crows pick at the carnage of battle in the morning light. Dwarven corpses lay strewn around their makeshift holdfast where you left them, weapons covered with grime on the bloody earth. One ogre corpse lies among them. Scattered around them are a the corpses of a dozen wolves and wargs and a dozen shattered dwarven skeletons with the remains of their armor. You see no sign of goblins among the dead.

A half-dozen dwarf-sized skeletons in chainmail and bearing axes wander aimlessly back and forth over the site, scattering the crows who emit their caws of protest before settling elsewhere on the prolific carrion. Maurice the owl alights back with the group, hooting his sadness at their loss in these events and looking over the dog and badger curiously.

Subtract a day's rations. You're now at a -2 penalty to hit for sleeplessness.
