Re: Expedition: Markd/On a Mission from Baudh II - 02 June 2

The group descends to the levels below the spectral night, securing the outer door and preparing to spend another day in rest. Bandy produces some objects d'art while the group confirms his estimate of the treasure which is sacked up in the main floor, ready to be taken by Centions. Guaire finishes grieving for Neachdain and settles into his duties, tending to the pony and mule as they are now stabled inside.

With the group deciding to rest, Florian invokes healing on Bandy, Bremen, and Irving. Together with a day's good rest, everyone feels much better. (Bremen at -1hp, everyone else full health) Florian prays for a new day's ability to aid the group with their quest and waits stoicly to follow the others back into the chambers below.

The group is secure against the outside with the sturdy door bolted, but sets a guard to watch the ramp. They are undisturbed through the day, but they note at several times that they see torches moving through the chamber at the ramp's bottom, indicating that there are still beings below. Guaire accepts his duty, waiting with the mounts and prepared to guard them while the group explores below.

Please deduct a day's rations for people and a day's fodder for the mounts. If you didn't do so yesterday, please deduct two.

The group lights a lantern and descends the ramp, finding that the dismembered Cention's body parts have all been removed, but the blood stains and crates remain. Peering down each of the side passages, they see the torches are no longer kept lit, but that each passage now fades into darkness. You cross to the door with the strange lettering which the Cention identified as "The Crooked Path," on the wall across from the ramp. You find that the door is locked.

Bandy examines the door.

"So... did you lot go in this door before? Or... find a key?"

Is it that Bremen never tried pushing it before, or has something happened to the door?

Having left Guaire in possession of all the treasure with as many safeguards as the group can think of*, Bremen heads down the ramp with the others. In the darkened chamber, he suggests the others keep watch down the passages, and one person light a lantern. After it has been lit, Bremen uses its light to inspect the door for traps, peering around the hinges and where they meet. He looks for a keyhole, as well.Apparently getting into the Path is test number one, he whispers.

* Safeguard suggestions from Bremen:
- all loot is moved to second level
- ladder to second level is ready to be ascended and pulled up by Guaire, large bag full of loot from the ghouls shoved up inside the chimney
- door to tower is bolted from inside with pack animals inside
- door to ramp is bolted from inside the tower as well
- Guaire is given a secret knock pattern to recognize members of the party returning - 1 knock, 3 knocks, 1 knock, then 3 knocks.

Any others? Bremen would have suggested Guaire climb to the third level and try the ghost's patience if things get dire for him.

There are no doors on the ramp. There's nothing to close between Guaire/mounts and the area below.

Pick locks [1d100] = 13

Bremen examines the door with his practiced eye and finds the solution easily. A panel is disguised to prevent casual observers from determining the means of access, but he is able to easily overcome this difficulty, causing the door to cantilever inwards. While easy for Bremen with his... broad skillset... he can imagine this might be a more difficult task for a priest or knight of the faith.

Beyond the door is a dark hallway. The lantern light illuminates 10-20' down, where the tunnel then jags to the left, proceeding off in that direction at a crooked 45 degree angle.

OOC: I think unless someone is a knight of Baudh, we leave the ghost knight alone before we piss him off and all die. But I agree with moving everything up to the second level and helping Guaire come up with a way of securing the trap door. The pony and mule will have to stay on the main level. But maybe the supplies on Mitch the pony can be moved up to the second floor as well.

Shoving treasure up the chimney might be a bit excessive, but if that's what Bremmen wants to do. Just be sure to get it before we leave...

"Nicely done... 'captain'..." Bandy says with a raised eye brow.

"You want me to lead the way, Markd? That way you might be able to attack over me if it becomes necessary..."

Captain Bremen winks at Bandy. You don't get to be Captain of the Guard by being naiive to these things. Crossbow in hand, he takes up a position at the rear of the party with Florian to prevent the party from being attacked from behind.

With the marching order determined, Bandy leads the way, asking that maybe the third person in line might hold the lantern in order to provide better lighting up front...

Marching Order:
- Bandy - Irving
- Markd
- Bremen - Florian

The passage continues at the oblique angle for some distance, then jags back sharply to the left, then squarely to the right, then squarely again to the right... a crooked path indeed. Bandy and Irving take the lead with Markd prepared to swing over the hobbit's head. Florian carries the lantern at the rear, where Bremen is ready with his crossbow.

As you round the last corner, you see a wooden door on the left side of the hallway, and about fourty feet ahead the hallway makes another sharp turn back to the left. Between you and that turn, however, you are surprised to see ten kobolds - they are heard you coming and fill the hallway outside the door, swordsman in the front and those in the back ready to hurl rocks.

The kobolds are upon you before you can regroup, the swordsmen in the first two ranks falling upon Bandy, Irving and Markd. Rocks then begin flying in the hallway as the kobold bark a battle cry. Rocks ricochet off the walls, but one thunks Irving (-2) while another knocks out one of the front-row kobold swordsman before he gets a chance to strike. Bandy parries his opponent but another gets past him and strikes Markd hard with the blade of his makeshift shortsword (-5). Another startles the unprepared Irving and manages to get inside the warrior's reach and send his uncle's magical sword skittering across the hallway floor. (-4, critical hit: disarm)

(Bremen - please make sure you deduct that flask of oil.)

Date: Time 8:10am, 08 June 2021
Light: Florian's Lantern (until 11:00am)
Spell Effects: None
Injuries: Irving (moderately wounded), Markd (minorly wounded), Bremen (mildly wounded)

I've marked on off, but am not sure why. Did ne need to provide the oil for Irving's lantern?

Bremen shouts words of encouragement to his companions, as well as taunts at the kobolds as he fires a quarrel into the throng of them.

Heavy Crossbow [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14, damage [1d8] = 1

Bandy attacks the nearest kobold with his longsword...

Longsword [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8 Damage [1d8+1] = 8+1 = 9

At the same time, he cries out, "The Scorpion Men are all dead! You are free to leave! Run now or we will kill you all!"

The kobolds continue to course forward, pressing their advantage against the front-rank hobbit and the disarmed Irving. Rocks are flying willy-nilly through the air and another kobold goes down to friendly fire, beaned in the head by his own companions; Bremen's crossbow takes out one kobold in the rear ranks while two of the excitable dog-men hit him solidly with their hunks of jagged marble (-3, -3). Another rock smacks squarely into Irving's head, (-2, Crit: knockout) disorienting him as he fumbles awkwardly to get his dagger out in time to defend himself further from the swordsmen before him. He drops in a heap; the kobolds surging over his prostrate body to attack Markd.

The kobolds press in on the front-line again, but are rebuffed as the party now fights back. They land no further blows with their swords, while Markd takes down one of his assailants. Six kobolds remain standing - Bandy yells at them that they should take their freedom and flee, but they're too excited by their initial success in injuring Bremen and both disarming and knocking out the resplendent knight that they squeal and continue their onrush.

Captain Bremen pushes through the opening to straddle the prone form of the dashing Irving, bringing forth the might of Baudh's hammer. Florian, get Irving out of the way.

Warhammer of Baudh [1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13, [1d8+3] = 4+3 = 7

EDIT! Initiative (modified for DEX) [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

The kobolds yip excitedly as the battle continues. Two rocks sail past Bandy's head as he bobs and weaves, clattering against the wall. The kobolds push forward, trying to clamber over Irving to get at those behind - one of them stumbles into Bandy even as Bandy lunges forward to block their passage. Bandy and the dog-man end up tangled on the floor, both missing their weapons as they clatter away on the floor. Then Bremen and Florian step up from the back, striking two more of the kobolds into pulp with heavy blows of hammer (-7) and flail (-10). This gives pause to the last four at the rear, likely not the bravest to begin with, and they decide to turn tail and run towards the bend in the corridor behind them.

Bandy retrieves his sword and ensures all of the remaining kobolds are dead as he loots their bodies, all the while muttering to himself about how poorly that battle went.
