subject to others joining, Amistad will attempt to contact the ogres at the palisade from the 23rd. Visiting the Cyclops with the gifts when they are fully prepared. He anticipates that the ogres might need a few meetings hence the extra days to put into them first.

Are you intersted in having a talking badger come along? For part of it, at least? He might linger with the centaurs a bit. Who knows?

With no guarantees of actually finding anyone, you can come along.

Clay will join you, bringing Clarabelle, Morr and Maurice. If Blackjack wants, Clarabelle has a mule she can bring along , though Clay prefers to travel light.

Mule would be fine too, can carry the team camping equipment and the extra rations, oils and food. If we are a large enough group, I suggest we trek into the forest itself after meeting with the ogres. It is still largely unexplored save for the brief encounters we have had on the fringes. A square route from the ogre palisade into the forest and north to the Orctongue river then back down following the trail we know from the fields of Tormentil.

(Please specify if you're bringing the mule, the horse, or both. With no mounts or with the horse, you are 3/4 movement. With the mule it can carry extra and we'll move at full-movement.)

Your group rises refreshed and ready to go on the morning of the 23rd, setting out as the lumberyard crews begin their (noisy) work on erecting the lumbermill pavilion. Miraculously, it is not raining on you today - the skies are clear and blue with only tufts of puffy clouds drifting by. A cool summer morning (52 degrees) as warmed into the low 60s as you walk, crossing the fields of tall summer grass along the river.

It is early afternoon when you see what you intended to find - the ogre encampment on a hill beside the riverbank. Long sharpened poles form a palisade pointing outwards around a collection of hide tents erected on bowed frames. The ground is trenched around the palisade, routing water away from the semi-permanent camp and the skins of a few dozen large animals are stretched and curing in the sun. You hear a bellowing call announcing that you've been spotted just as you've spotted them - the tall form of an ogre looking your direction from a high-ground lookout spot. Another ogre climbs up and joins him, the pair seeming to discuss you. Amistad recognizes the ogres Aagrok and Kreek from his last visit -- the pair bellow a "Hallllooooooooo..." and wave in greeting.

(It is utterly amazing how you guys roll Friendly dispositions so often... )

'Blackjack' Amistad

It is a good sign they wave not throw rocks but Amistad doesn't want to be easily deceived. He waves back and calls Aagrok.

"Greetings to you Aagrok. My young friend Earc sends his greetings. I see your camp expands. Did you scout the orc tribes we told you to be wary of? Come out with Krekk and enjoy some refresh mens with us. "

The corners of Willow's mouth turn up, thankful that Amistad did not entreat the ogres to enjoy any refresh womens or refresh badgers.

At that thought, she glances down at the badger, still curious and excited to meet Clay, the miracle reincarnate work of Beith! How could anyone ever doubt her powers with such evidence of her glory sitting right there on the ground next to her?

The two ogres come outside of the palisade, waiting for you to approach and meet them halfway. "Not hungry..." replies Aagrok, patting his round belly which protrudes from his tunic. "Ate bear." He grins -- a toothsome and frightening sight -- and points to the grumpbear skin tanning in the sunlight, making a twisting motion with his hands to show it dying.

'Blackjack' Amistad

nods in appreciation and a little awed that the creature was so easily subdued. It could easily be us too, but not withstanding that fact approaches the halfway point and offers a wineskin of good wine to the ogres."These hybrids are an unnatural pest. Their source is from some tunnels underneath the forest. My druid friends with me would study their creation."Amistad peers at the camp and extensions behind the ogres. "You have built a lot in a short time. I could pay well to use such endeavour for expanding a permanent settlement further along the river."

Amistad will call the others forward save for Clarabelle and the pack animals.

Willow approaches with Blackjack, curious to hear civil discourse between ogre and man.

Clay and Morr move up alongside the woodsman, as does Clarabelle with her mule. Clay asks permission to look at the grumpbear pelt, hoping the ogre doesn't decide he wants a badger pelt as well.

Kreek looks surprised. Aagrok grunts, considering Amistad's words. "Yes, we build and stay. We found your orcs. We face arrows from men on horses," he points back southwest towards Gaul. "You offer...neighbors?" He listens to the proposal about securing a roadway. He picks his teeth for a minute or two. "You pay us. Gold. You give wood board for REAL houses. You get men to stop shooting arrows. If men-friends, we tell you about orcs."

"Sheep," adds Kreek. "you tell farmers to give us sheep, too." Aagrok nods. "Tasty."

'Blackjack' Amistad

"The Duke of Gaul would pay in gold for the construction of the forest side trail once frontier settlers locate to the logging camp. You can buy the wood and build there at cost price and I would hope with your martial prowess that some join with Achaedany and I to patrol the area. As for attacks from men, I suspect they are from the foreign knights who muster nearby. I can script a treaty between us to bond our settlements."

Amistad pitches that perhaps Aagrok or Kreek plus another joins the expedition, to secure the logging and settlement site and also to treatise with the other forest denizens.

Not sure about the orcs though. We made contact with one group but they have warring factions and may look to make bloody incursions upon us."

They're setting their terms - I'll be clear OOC. You needed to get them friendly, which occurred naturally. If you want to do a recruiting roll (your proposal was to recruit them as a unit which provides security in this Hex), you need to set a payment that they'll accept then you get to try the recruiting roll. They're asking for payment in gold (10gp/each/week until operations have a self-sustaining profit), lumber for real houses (essentially, confirmation that they're building a permanent settlement), cessation of hostilities and gifts of sheep (i.e. arrange with the ArchDuke to have the guards stop attacking them and pay protection money in sheep so they stop raiding farms.) They're offering to not attack humans, not raid their farms much if sheep are given willingly, and to provide ongoing intel and early-warning about Orcs coming this way.

If you invite them along, you need to pay them 10gp/each up-front, then given them a share of loot. They're also getting to know you better... there's a chance that this sours your ability to then recruit them as a unit for the original purpose (since they need to pass a morale check at the end of the expedition to be willing to work with you again.)

Mutton's good, agrees Clay. Sounds like a reasonable fee for their services. Especially the part where Gaulish patrols stop provoking their neighbors. Problem is, the Duke thinks that a decree from the southron kings gives him dominion over everything that has lived here for centuries. And it's hardly human nature to trust anything different. Worth a try though. Clay offers a potion of healing against 50gp of the deal. To help if the soldiers come again before Blackjack gets back to Gaul. He also invites them to come visit Beith's Watch, explaining it is a judgement free zone as long as visitors are peaceful.

Willow follows the conversation silently, curious to see how it plays out and not wanting to interject her thoughts in front of the ogres. Finally, at an appropriate time, she quietly adds, "Maybe a chance to reconvene and discuss the ogres' offer would be possible?"

The ogres are grateful for Clay's addition of the potion; they are also more than a little bemused by the idea of the bipedal talking badger. They try to poke him with their fingers until he shows it unwelcome. They otherwise continue to bargain, holding their terms for Amistad's response.

(I'm going to hold for another post from Amistad, after the OOC clarification. Feel free to continue other IC contributions as well.)
