Markd suggests just heading west until they hit the river, or allowing the dog a few hours to work his skills.

"Oh, yeah. I guess we could just go west, too," says Fingers.

Bandy nods in agreement, at first, but then pipes in, "Although it seems this side of the river the land near it is rather marshy for some distance. We might make better time staying on dry ground and moving south once we find marshy land, unless we have obvious signs of the river at hand."

"Hey, I've got maybe a crummy idea," says Fingers. "Maybe I should scout ahead. With my fancy elf cloak, I ought to see any enemies before they see me."

You set off, heading due west based on the bearing of the sun's rise. You travel about two hours and you see the river ahead of you on the horizon. The towers of Frogmorton Ford rise to the southwest, so you're a bit more north than when you began yesterday, but should be able to find your bearings easily enough.

Assuming you turn and head back towards the crypt again?

Also, everyone subtract 1 day's rations.

Markd quickly jots down what he remembers about the ogre's location from where they are now so he can expand his map.

"Okay. Journey to the crypt, take two," says Fingers.

Yup, back towards the crypt. 1.5 rations deducted.

Orienting based on where you see the river ford in the distance, the party turns back eastward and cuts cross-country once more, seeking the crypts which Bandy and Markd visited previously. Not far into your trip, you find easier going, realizing that you've stumbled upon the remains of a wide, well-worn road which is slowly succumbing to the ravages of time. Since it is going roughly your direction, you follow it while you can.

It is approaching lunchtime and you're getting to the point where you expect to soon see the hill that covers the crypts rising on the horizon with its stone henge on top. You continue on the road, straining to see in the distance, when you are surprised - four man-sized humanoids leap from a blind hidden in the grasses, assaulting your group with long, heavy spears! At first they look like hobgoblins, but their off-putting appearance marks them as being a hybrid with something else. They have hairless, rubbery hide, long claws, and several rows of wicked-sharp triangular teeth.

The first leaps out at the front of the group, losing sight of Fingers in his cloak as Sprinkles dives forward to protect his master, snarling. The dog yelps as it gets an expertly-aimed spear in the side. (Critical hit, -4) The other three choose Markd as the most imposing target, ganging up on the warrior. Two of the spears strike home through Markd's armor, but he manages to swat away the third with his shield. (-7, -9)

Surprise round over. Round 1!)

"Get away from my dog!" yells Fingers, lashing out with his spear.

Spear +1 (melee) (THAC0 18): [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20, [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4

If Fingers is hidden, please make this a backstab attempt if possible.

Markd winces in pain and attempts a quick swat of his sword.
long sword+1(2undead) (Thac0 16) [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8; damage [1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9

He adjusts on the reverse swing and makes contact.
long sword+1(2undead) (Thac0 16) [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20; damage [1d8+2] = 3+2 = 5

Still trying to sort out the details of the trial and just how it came to be that Bremen was convicted and sentenced to die, Bandy was about to round on Markd with some questions when they are suddenly assaulted by four... creatures.

Concerns about how Markd handled himself instantly fade as his friend struggles with three of them and he jumps to his friend's aid, cleaving into the nearest one with his faithful longsword...

Longsword THAC016 [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 Damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2

Seeing Markd triply engaged Hengist steps forward to the side opposite Bandy and strikes the foe on that side with his staff.

Staff to hit (THAC0 15) = [1d20] = 13, Damge = [1d6+4] = 5+4 = 9
Playing: At the Forest's Edge: Desmond Halfling Vagabond
The Northern Marches: Hengist Cleric of Baudh

The surprise attack devolves into pandemonium, the party and creatures lashing out at each other!

Sprinkles savages the monster before him, viciously chewing its ankle (-2) as Fingers appears behind it, yelling in defense of his dog and driving his bannered spear right through the beast from behind, until the spearhead pops out of its chest. The creature tries to lash out at Sprinkles with its claws but misses, finally collapsing to the ground unmoving as Fingers pulls his spear free.

Markd faces off against the center creature, slashing it viciously with a back-slice from his sword. (-5) The creature drops its spear and lunges at the warrior with its slime-covered claws, deflected only by the quick blocking of Markd's shield.

Allmond and Heingist peel away one of the creatures from Markd while Bandy assaults the other. Having drawn the party into close combat and finding them more challenging prey, they also drop their spears and dive at you with their claws. One of the creatures digs its claws into Allmond (-2, -3) even as Allmond smacks it with his banded quarterstaff. (-3) Heingist comes around with his own staff, knocking the creature unconscious, (-9) but not before Allmond's staff falls from his fingers, his body beginning to go rigid.

The other creature swipes at Bandy - who ducks one claw only to get grazed by the other (-1) before bringing his own sword around in a vicious blow that drops the creature unmoving to the ground as well. (Critical hit: -9)

The last creature standing stays facing Markd, vicious intent clear in its eyes and unconcerned for the apparent defeat of all three of his companions.

Bandy - I need a Save vs Paralysis, please.

Date: 11:43am, 19 July 2021
Effects: None
Distance Travelled: ~6 miles
Injuries: Allmond (severely injured, paralyzed), Markd (moderately injured), Sprinkles (moderately injured), Bandy (minorly injured)

Fingers tries to circles around behind the remaining monster. His spear is still dripping with monster guts as he shoves it into the thing attacking Markd.

Spear +1 (melee) (THAC0 18): [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21, [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4
That does not include any bonus for attacking from the rear, if he can.

Markd again slices at the monster long sword+1(2undead) (Thac0 16) [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4; damage [1d8+2] = 8+2 = 10, only to realize his recent training has messed up his motion.
He thinks too hard as he finishes the maneuver. long sword+1(2undead) (Thac0 16) [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4; damage [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6

Bandy easily shrugs off the scratch of the claw...

Save vs. Paralysis (6) [1d20] = 16

... and tries to strike at the last creature, but fails to connect.

Longsword vs Undead THAC016 [1d20+2] = 7+2 = 9 Damage [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6

Seizing the chance to end the foul creature Hengist lunges forward with his staff again.

Staff to hit (THAC0 15) = [1d20] = 15, Damge = [1d6+4] = 4+4 = 8
Playing: At the Forest's Edge: Desmond Halfling Vagabond
