The last creature claws at Markd, his parrying keeping it at bay but equally ineffective at landing a blow. Fingers stabs the creature, throwing it off balance, then a heavy blow from Heingist slams the creature to the ground. For a moment they think their problems have ended, until the one Heingist knocked down before hisses and dives at his legs, now resurgent. Heingist is able to dodge, but the creature clambers to its feet, hissing in irritation.

"Stay dead!" cries Fingers, hoping these aren't zombie troll things or anything.

Spear +1 (melee) (THAC0 18): [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4, [1d6+2] = 3+2 = 5

Bandy likewise tries to end the creature's life. Or undeath... or whatever.

Longsword vs Undead THAC016 [1d20+2] = 2+2 = 4 Damage [1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9

... and fairs no better.

In the name of Baudh, stay dead! Hengist strikes out with his staff again.

Staff to hit (THAC0 19) = [1d20+4] = 5+4 = 9, Damge = [1d6+4] = 4+4 = 8
Playing: At the Forest's Edge: Desmond Halfling Vagabond
The Northern Marches: Hengist Cleric of Baudh

Fingers realizes something, or thinks he does. "They are troll things! Troll hobgoblins! Or hobgobtrollins! Something! Anyway, we need to burn the ones we already took down before they pop up too!"

The others run towards the re-ambulatory creature, but Markd neatly drops it back to the ground with two grevious slashes of his longsword. For a moment, all is quiet.

"C'mon, help me burn 'em," says Fingers. "And be ready to stab 'em again if they get up." He takes just a minute to quickly search the bodies, then opens a flask of oil and pours it on the rubbery hobgoblins-mixed-with-something things. After a look to the others to make sure they're ready, he lights it.

-1 oil

Lacking oil and torches Hengist will stand on guard ready to knock back down any that show signs of getting up.

"Just keep hacking at them," says Fingers. "Should keep them dead until I'm ready to light 'em."

Bandy helps pour oil over the bodies then hacks at them until they are well good and burning.

Fingers rolls the bodies to check for valuables while the others stand poised to keep the creatures down. Their wounds do appear to be healing before your eyes, and two of them twitch and try to rise as Fingers does his work, compelling the others to hit them again, then perhaps again. Fingers doesn't find any coins, but beyond their four heavy spears, he finds:
- A clear glass orb four inches in diameter
- large cloudy light green jade
- A pair of steel gauntlets embellished with gold accents and set with shimmering red-orange ammolite stones.

After removing their valuables, the hobgoblin-like creatures are doused with oil and lit, whereupon you find they burn quite merrily, their rubbery flesh being excessively oily. They are then soon reduced to unmoving charred meat and bone. Thankfully, Allmond also recovers in this time, rather disconcerted by his paralytic state. He asks who needs the benefit of Baudh's healing.

Subtract 4 flask of oil total and tell me how much you have left.
(Fingers already subtracted one, above)

"Man, those are nasty," says Fingers. "Kind of a neat batch of shinies, though. Check out that orb! And those gauntlets sure look fancy!"

He kneels down by Sprinkles and gives him a hug, making sure not to touch his wound. "There, there, good boy." Fingers opens one of his healing potions and gives it to his dog.

Healing potion: [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7

Marullus, do dogs still use full quaffs of potions, or can they heal from half a potion, the way they need only half rations?

I realized this weekend that these are BtB monsters, not another of Marullus's weird hybrid creations. Crazy!

I'll volunteer one more flask of oil from Fingers for the burning (-1 on sheet) and wait to see if anyone else has some oil to have used. That leaves Fingers with 4 flasks.

potion would need to be fully drank, but we allow the Keehnelf house rules that you can sip for 1hp. In this case,
it takes the full potion either way.

The book is full of crazy hybrids. ;) This gameworld just gives an origin story.

Sprinkles whimpers for sympathy when Fingers gives attention, then licks his face gratefully when he is healed.

I'd forgotten about that house rule. The rule allows 5 sips from a potion, and Sprinkles was down 4 HP. Could I change my action to have Finger give Sprinkles four sips, leaving one for later use? No worries if I just need to remember it next time.

That's fine. If you want to track the potion with 1hp left in it, you may do so. :)

Fingers takes custody of the orb for later investigation.

"I guess we should get going," he says. When everyone is ready, he leads the way to the tomb.
