Issachar

"We have a mighty haul. Gwanwen offers us both a feast and a famine. I think the seasons are beginning to turn. Let us trust and pray we can sneak out from under the warg noses and deliver these things to the comforts of Gaul."

[*]Finely-wrought heavy flail with Ellurian steel chain
[*]Ellurian steel banded mail armor
he wears this already. Issachar takes a small corner of the gnoll room and prays using his rosary beads and fingers seeds of corn onto the ground. In downtime he meditates for his prayer-spell list and makes some corn dollies to hang on the wall from the stuffing and straw about the place.

Winnie is warmed by the small sense of normalcy of crafting footwear with Bianca and is grateful for the night's rest so she can memorize spells. She takes her appointed watch, in between sleeping and praying to Beith both for guidance and forgiveness - for Bianca as well. She keeps her eyes open for mice or rats to communicate with in this subterranean habitat - some signal that she is still part of the greater whole.

The group moves everything back to the gnoll's sleeping chamber. Since they already moved all the body parts, including the children, to the other room there is nothing here but the bloodstains to disturb them. They set watches and rest for the night, unmolested as the doors are secured.

Winnie seeks normalcy, hoping for polite conversation with dungeon rats, but is disappointed as the vermin steer clear of your charnel chambers. Issachar, priest of death, makes some delicate corn-husk dolls and hangs them on the wall. Bianca and Winnie stitch up some rag-shoes. Funil and Drunil have gotten conspicuously quiet, though Drunil eyes Winnie in reverent silence during their night watch.

In the morning, Earc casts Detect Magic on the assembled goods before loading the mule:

How much would the inks, etc weigh if they weren't in their boxes? Could we repack those in gnoll rags for safe transport?

1.5 rations deducted

Was there an alembic in the lab, and if so, how much did it weigh? What about a mortar and pestle or other equipment for potions and poultices?

...you'd break and ruin them.

The easiest answer, I think, is that you need a cart for large, fragile lab equipment. They're valuable, but not to be drug on sledges. If you really want to do more math on it, I'm open to suggested weights.

I add that up as about 460 lbs in magic items and money equivalents (i.e., the chests containing 750 gp each, the locked chests, the 40 lbs of silver medical tools, and the 5 boxes of magical inks at 20 lb each).

Pony can carry a total of 400 lbs at 60'. That leaves 60 lbs for us to split if we want to leave the non-magical items here.

Here's what we would leave behind (i.e., what the 460 lb total does not include):
  • A Southron steel longsword with sturdy crossbar (4 lbs, 5 gp resale value)
  • A Southron steel longsword notched from frequent use (4 lbs, 5 gp resale value)
  • Five sets of well-made Southron chainmail (30 lbs each, 35 gp resale value each)
  • Four Southron longbows (3 lbs each, 20 gp resale value each)
  • Four quivers with 15 goose-feathered Southron arrows, each. (3 lbs each, 2.5 gp resale value each)
  • 7 cp
  • A worn wooden staff (4 lbs, 1 gp resale value)

The Southron longswords and longbows are worth more than their weight in silver, so it might make sense to bring those instead of the silver medical tools, if the medical tools are only worth their metal weight.

Do we have any way to open the locked chests here? Or should we hire the services of someone like Fingers when we get back to town?

Lab equipment can stay then.

Having been recently torn from a comfortable afterlife, Winnie feels detached from the natural world she grew up revering. Desperate to find a way to feel like part of the world again, she memorizes Read Magic and casts it. She pours over the spellbooks and scroll to discern what spells lie within, offering the knowledge to everyone in the party. She also looks at the runes on the shields and weapons. There must be something to help among all this junk!

FYI, Olaf learned the hard way what the bonus (or curse) is on each (or some?) of the swords. I don't know if that's supposed to be OOC knowledge. If not, I'll post that here.

Earc likewise memorizes Read magic, along with Detect Magic, and spends some time deciphering the ancient spell book.

His remaining first level spells are offensive in nature...

OOC: spell list updated on character sheet.

I agree with Zhym's assessment. We can leave things in this room with relative safety, I think, considering the hidden entrance and secret door. But we should not leave anything we care about having, just in case.

Earc and Winnie dedicate their morning to pouring over the newly acquired books taken from the dead adventurers. Winnie shares the knowledge of what is in the tomes with Bianca as she goes.
Scroll in the scrollcase (of the wizard Hagaseth):
- Burning Hands (1st)
- Mirror Image (2nd)

Elven Spellbook (of Gaeron):
- Magic Missile (1st)
- Sleep (1st)
- Read Magic (1st)
- Invisibility (2nd)

Elven Spellbook (of Carchannoi):
- Charm Person (1st)
- Read Magic (1st)
- Locate Object (2nd)
- Shatter (2nd)
- Gust of Wind (3rd)

Human Spellbook (of the wizard Dorath):
- Detect Magic (1st)
- Read Magic (1st)
- Floating Disc (1st)
- Web (2nd)

Human Spellbook (of the wizard Hagaseth):
- Burning Hands (1st)
- Unseen Servant (1st)
- Comprehend Languages (1st)
- Mirror Image (2nd)
- Shatter (2nd)
- Web (2nd)
- Gust of Wind (3rd)
- Clairaudience (3rd)
- Dimension Door (4th)
- Conjure Elemental (5th)
Olaf inspects the chests, but the only way to open them is with force (risking the contents inside) or taking them back unopened and seeking aid from the Guardsmen or another adventurer. Having tried all the swords, Olaf is able to relate that the red-steel sword and blue-sheen bastard sword both were a bit easier to use (+1 base bonus) while the one with dragonscale wraps is masterful to wield (+3 bonus). His favorite, of course, is the bastard sword he claimed (+2 bonus), though he is concerned about if his hair is falling out. He finds more strands on his bedroll when he wakes.

Are you wearing/wielding enough of the items to get the total remaining haul below the weight limit for the mule?

Winnie notes that, from her experience with other witches, the Floating Disk could carry most of the treasure. With only 10 minutes, it won't get us very far, but if we are attacked, I can cast the spell and you can throw the treasure on the invisible disk. Then we can run away. I'm not keen on violence anyways, and I really don't feel right meting out death considering I should be there myself. She avoids making eye contact with Bianca.

I'll throw it out here that Winnie will memorize Floating Disc twice.

We don't get the spells in our own book unless we spend time and gold to copy them. The inks will help with that cost though.

Keep in mind that Bianca is already wearing these items and that is part of her 45 encumbrance.

Also, did we ever get a ruling on the dog as a beast of burden question? Even if he carries a sack of coins or something it would be a help.

Okay, gotcha. Thanks!
That night, Bianca takes a bit of time to go into a deep meditation following her prayers and chants which she does silently in the coner away from everyone else.
