Re: Expedition: Earc/Guhra's Tower - 15 July 2021
Offering a few more nuts and a piece of cheese, she starts to chitter in Rodent. Hello friends. I need to sneak into the goblin den. Do you know of any holes - big enough for me - that lead into the ground beneath the stone-tower/tree there? She points to help them understand what she means. It could be beneath a large rock. Any help you can give me is very appreciated!

Issachar
The cleric remains silent watching the wargs and witches at work. He takes time to do some devotions and check his prayer book. He follows wary of goblin traps and rodent mischief.

The others watch Winnie chitter to the three rather animated squirrels for a long time. They seem quite loquacious.
Winnie has a rather animated and quite lengthly conversation about hiding places, the size of hiding places, the best hiding places for nuts, what hides in bigger hiding places, and where you can dig under large rocks. She redirects them, but they avoid the tower, owing to the cruelty of the goblins and wargs. Eventually you tease out a promising lead - to the northwest of your current campsite, the wide stream goes off an embankment and pours as a waterfall into a pool in the vale below. They say the snarly goblin-eating dogmen like the hiding place behind the waterfall and, yes, yes, it would be a big enough hiding place for you as well. You, and all your nuts.

Hearing the end of the translation, Olaf glances quickly down, just below his midsection, then dubiously at the squirrels.

Winnie agrees that avoiding the goblins and wargs is a good idea, and tells them she hopes this waterfall hidey-hole allows both Winnie and her companions to minimize the amount they must interact with. She offers to introduce the squirrels to her friends, if they would like to meet them, explaining that the others aren't able to talk the same language. She isn't surprised if they decline her offer. Befire departing, Winnie asks if they can think of any more leads, then thanks the squirrels for their help. Winnie wishes them a bountiful harvest and warm nests for the winter.
Well, let's see if those squirrels are on to something, shall we? Her mood is buoyed by the lead. She takes Bianca by the hand as they stroll toward the waterfall, a smile on her face.

Bianca
Allows Winnie to take her hand, ending her meditations with a little more effort than usual, but she falls into easy step beside her sister. "They seemed very helpful. Do they have much hope for an easy winter? It seems bleak out her compared to the Southlands.
I wonder how much of it is caused by the goblins and how much is just the natural hardness of this land..."
Thinking back on her meditations she grows quiet again and leans in to whisper to Winnie.

Earc nods as Winnie explains the conversations with the critters.
"Well done, Winnie. You're putting your skills to good use for the group!" He gives a quick glance over towards Bianca before continuing. "Here," he hands her a vial containing a viscous yellow liquid. "You've earned it. Of course, should the space under the waterfall prove to not be a rear entrance, then you can feel free to return it. But for the time being, we'll assume your friends have the right of it."
"Let's find this waterfall, shall we?"
Getting his bearings, Earc begins heading towards what could be the back entrance to the tower. He will rely on the dwarven hirelings to help locate this waterfall. Once they are close enough that they can hear it, though, he offers to advance in a less noticeable fashion if the others will wait a moment.
OOC: Removing 1 potion of Growth from Earc's Inventory.

Olaf trudges along, somewhat more confident in the group's plan now.
Re: Expedition: Earc/Guhra's Tower - 15 July 2021
Invited to 'meet' the group, the three squirrels attempt to 'say hello' by climbing the party's legs, especially the dwarves, and checking what's in their backpacks. Finding this to be rebuffed, they scurry off, returning into the woods.
The party moves on, following the squirrels' directions from one prolific oak to the tree with the good pine nuts, to the place where the owl watches, and finally to the stream. They find the waterfall below them, as promised. With careful inspection, the dwarves note a narrow path worn into the hillside by which they could make their way down single file to where the water crashes into the deep pool below.

Earc of Toll's Tower
Earc whispers to the others, "It was my idea to use a back door, so... I'll check it out and make sure it's safe."
He pulls a stoppered flask from the folds of his robes and takes a quick sip from it, completely disappearing from sight.

Halfpint will attempt to follow the same trail she expects Earc to follow, hoping to hide in the contour of the path and the adjacent scenery.

Olaf waits, not wanting to get his armor wet—and incur the duty to dry and oil it afterward—until he is sure an entrance exists.
Re: Expedition: Earc/Guhra's Tower - 15 July 2021
After a few minutes, an incorporeal voice responds, "There is a path. It goes behind the waterfall. It does not appear that there is a guard right now. I think we should move quickly and get under the waterfall and into the tunnel."
Nobody sees him looking around before he adds, "Where's the halfling girl?"

Winnie shrugs at Earc's question. She looked to be following you. Halflings are sneaky. Maybe you missed her on the way back? She gathers up her things and follows Olaf. Olaf, does this look like the sort of place for a secret tunnel?
Re: Expedition: Earc/Guhra's Tower - 15 July 2021
The party makes its way single file down the narrow track on the hillside, the path nearly invisible but from the right angle. You have to step through the pouring water, doing your best to minimize the amount you are soaked, but Olaf regretfully realizes he'll need to oil his armor properly, for sure.
On the other side of the falling water, you find yourselves in a long tunnel. It is squared by dwarven hands, but a trickle of water has worn a groove into the floor over the passage of centuries. A faint light diffuses through the falling water to let you see dimly where you stand, but it is not far up the hallway that it is lost in darkness. The dwarves report that there are no turns or doorways as far as they can see with their more sensitive eyes. They also tell you that the tunnel moves at a slight uphill grade, but this seems intuitive to even the non-dwarves, given the small rivulet of water trickling down the channel in the floor.

"Aye, this looks like the sort of place for a secret tunnel," says Olaf, now that they're standing in the secret tunnel. It's hard to tell if he's joking or not.
Re: Expedition: Earc/Guhra's Tower - 15 July 2021
"Yes, well... no time like the present, is there?" the invisible voice asks.
Suddenly a bright light appears as Earc extracts a short piece of driftwood from his pack, one end glowing brightly as if it is a non-burning torch of extreme brightness.
OOC: How wide is the passage? Single file? or double? I'll post a marching order once I know.

Single file, 5' wide.
