Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Idriss
if the door remains steadfastly locked he suggests we un-barricade the door and seek out the lair of these demon-thropes.

I PM'd Dram and Siravd about forcing the door. Dram is wondering if forcing the door negates the invisibility effects like combat would. If so, Able will is his maul on the door if it is wood. If not, they can try the door.
Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
They haven't been invisible before. How would they know?
The door is reinforced wood.

"Smash it down, I say," says Dare with a giddy smile (one assumes).

Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
It's been a week since I PM'd sirravd about Grimble trying the door. Between that no-answer and Neegan wanting to risk his invisibility (which makes sense), we'll move on. Unless Dare wants to try forcing the door...
Able is unable to tell if anyone is willing to try the door, so he shrugs. Let's clear away that mess again and try the door on the right. He casts silence on a rock and tosses it on the floor near the statue to keep it from alerting the sniffers.

Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Dare begins assisting with the barricade, an invisible force pulling the obstruction apart.
Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Giving up on the reinforced door, Ablesforth, Dolph and Dare set about dismantling the recently reassembled barricade on the broken north-facing door which leads back into the room with the talking statue. Ablesforth casts a silence spell on a stray stone and tosses it near the statue, ensuring it is mum on their proceedings.
They're barely halfway to opening the barricade when thirteen slavering half-headed sniffers gallop back into the room through the two northern doors, both of which hang open. They slam bodily into the barricade, knocking aside the remaining pieces of furniture and finding themselves face to face with the party!

Neegan- pulls his crossbow and fires one of his silver tipped bolts at one of the sniffers.
L Crossbow to hit (THAC018)[1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18, todam [1d6] = 1
I do not know if there is any bonus damage for the silver.

Dare uncorks and tosses a vial of holy water at the frontline of half-heads! "Here we go again!" he sighs.

Pendleton, invisible and suspecting that the demons cannot be put to sleep, stays back and out of the way of the battle.

Ablesforth stands squarely in the doorway. An unmoving, untouchable barricade, blockimg the snifferz from accessing his companions. He hopes they continue to assault the demons from relative safety, pouring holy water on the downed sniffers before they can heal themselves.
Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Sorry once more about my absence. It's crazy here.
Grimble moves to the front of the party to stand beside Ablesforth. Knowing the creatures cannot understand him, he still shouts: "Move further and I strike you down!"

Stay behind me, Grimble. They'll rip you apart. Get'em from behind me. And Idriss? Maybe one of you can try that door now, though?

Would Dare be able to try that locked door again?
Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Idriss
"Maybe some clues can be seen from whence they came? We need to get behind them and into their own chambers." says the arcane Templar. Not sure what he can do which will not break the aura of protection around him. He steps into the statue room and kicks aside the stone so that spell casters can verbalise their incantations, booting it into the far corner.
"Speak statue, tell us of these creatures and their rites of passage!"he demands of the statue.

Neegan shoulders his crossbow and heads to the reinforced door to see if he can get it open.

Re: Expedition: Ablesforth: The Demon Hole - 14 July 2021
Idriss rushes into the next chamber as Ablesforth then body-blocks the doorway. Several of the sniffers impede him, getting right up in his face and blocking his ability to move at first. Idriss is careful, knowing that forcing his ward against them would dispell it, making his way to the statue. Idriss kicks the silencing stone out of the way. "Speak statue, tell us of these creatures and their rites of passage!" he demands of the statue. "Out of my sight! Thou dost infect my eyes," spits the statue like an epithet in response to Idriss's demands.
Meanwhile, Ablesforth and Dolph stand stoicly in the doorway. A half-dozen of the demonic creatures slaver and drool upon them, feeling about for a way past. Behind them, Neegan becomes visible, firing a crossbow bolt that slices open the sponge-like flesh of one of the foremost creatures. A superficial wound, the party expects to see it heal shut imminently, but it does not. Dare sighs "Here we go again!" as he becomes visible. He splashes holy water from behind Ablesforth and squarely hits the foremost horror (-6). It begins shrieking horribly, its flesh melting off of its face and chest like drawn butter. The creatures around it all pause, taking stock of the damage and this new threat -- they all turn and stampede back out through the two northern doors, leaving their writhing friend on the floor behind them. After a moment, the injured demon also leaps up and sprints away.
"Tell us!" repeats the Templar Idriss towards the statue as the others enter the room. "Your virginity breeds mites, much like a cheese." the statue tells him, dismissively, looking disgusted.
Ablesforth crosses quickly on his intended route to the right-hand door on the north wall. Holding his lantern aloft, he sees a large chamber - the flickering of the lantern only dimly revealing the far walls. It is 50' by 50', extending north and east from the corner where your doorway enters. To your east, another door is closed, leading south at the other end of the wall. There is a closed door at the end of the north-end of the wall currently on your left as well, and one in the middle of the wall on the room's eastern side. In the opposite corner from where you stand, on the east end of the north wall, you see the dim outline of an open archway. The western door is made of solid stone, a large puddle of water around its base. The other doors all of simple wood.
The room itself is otherwise a disaster of smashed wooden furniture and debris. Barrel staves, chair spindles and legs, two halves of a broken rectangular table, fragments of what might have been smaller tables, and two sets of collapsed shelves show that this room once likely seated a sizeable host. The forces of chaos, however, have had little respect for whatever purpose the room was meant to serve.
