Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
we also have continual light sticks so we are not totally blind, just cold in the rain.
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
You continue your watch in the drizzly night, the steady, clean light from your magical glowing driftwood logs an odd replacement for the flickering warmth of a campfire. The trees continue to shift in the darkness, but do not come closer than the light of your 'fire' would allow. About 6:00am, Earc rises and is able to memorize his spells for the day, but no one otherwise feels particularly rested, being cold, wet, and tired. By the morning, the temperature has dropped to 48 degrees, the rain tapering off before the sun begins to rise. You are under way by 7:00am. A heavy fog lays on the forest, making things more eerie than usual (which is saying something in this enchanted wood) and reducing visibility as you get underway. You don't notice any particular oddness in the trees now in the daylight, making the night's events seem more surreal.
The morning sky is clear, sun dappling through the trees and warming the sodden forest as you travel, keeping the river visible on your left side. The air warms to 65 degrees, making things more comfortable, though still wet as you slog through the wood, knocking fat droplets off of every branch you disturb. As you approach the noon hour, clouds are rolling in from the east and a fresh drizzle of fat raindrops resumes upon your heads. Pulling your carts through the trees and brush of the thick forest is arduous work but you make headway, moving just over a mile in the five hours of morning.
As the noon hour approaches, you pause, hearing the trotting of horses. You look towards the river bank and see a group of nine men, each bare chested with the bottom half of a horse, pause as they come over the next rise. They look at you. You look at them. They seem to be waiting for your reaction.

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
All the way from the cold camp, Olaf gripes. He gripes about the cold, he gripes about people not believing him that trees are dangerous, and, most of all, he gripes about the group slowing themselves down and risking their lives for some wagon loads of crappy silver. "Gems travel," he says. "Silver be barely even worth its weight in silver." "I dinna know a man could walk this slow 'n stay upright." And so it goes.
When he sees the centaurs, Olaf shoots a pointed glance at the others as if to say, "See?!" He waits for one of the more charming members of the group to make their salutation.

OOC: ?? You might be thinking of Fingers' expedition? We have 200lbs of gold and 200lbs of silver in various items like buttons and bars and pins and such and some gems from two sources, iir. Then 32ep and a simple gold band from the last group of morlocks.
If you think it will free us up to move much faster, we can maybe cache the silver somewhere and just move on with the gold? How much faster will that make us? Does anyone know?

OOC: Earc has a CH of 9. If anyone has something much better, then they should go first.

I thought most of what we were lugging around in carts was silver, but I didn't go back to verify.Alethan wrote:OOC: ?? You might be thinking of Fingers' expedition? Anyway, Olaf is mostly just cranky from lack of sleep, but if we could move faster by stashing the silver somewhere he'd be for it. And Olaf's charisma is 12, FWIW.

That's one of the highest in the game, which I find hysterical, btw.Zhym wrote:And Olaf's charisma is 12, FWIW.
Charisma: Olaf --> Blackjack --> Earc
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
Realizing no one else has any better people skills than him—or, er, horse-people skills—Olaf raises an open hand in greeting.
"Greetings!" he says. "I am Olaf, son of Olaf, son of Olaf. How can I—we—be of service?"

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
Olaf raises his greetings in Common, trying to allay any nervousness by conveying peaceful intent in Lawful as well. Most of the Centaurs look non-plussed. They remain about 120' off -- the leader at the for calls out across the distance. "What is your business? Why do humans trudge so through the wood?"
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
"We are going back home after looking at a morlock hole," answers Olaf.
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
"The human home is down the river, then?" he asks, somberly.
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
"It be down and over a bit," answers Olaf. He points in the direction he thinks town is.
"I want me out of these trees more'n you want me out, I ken," he adds.

The Centaurs seem amused by the dwarf's gruff admission. The leader cracks a smile. "Well if you wish to go, then we agree. And, if you descended into the tunnels of those insane servants to strike a blow, then we are grateful, for we cannot. We will speed you to the edge of our domain."
The Centaurs trot closer - hefting your push carts easily on their equine backs. They lead you down pathways along the river long-worn by their hooves and the afternoon passes swiftly as you travel unencumbered.
Finally you reach a clearing along the river, a trail-less forest still stretching before you, but far less than before."It is here we leave you. Ahead to your land,
behind to ours."

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
"Thank ye," says Olaf, glad to be leaving the trees behind. "If we go back to that hole, or if we come back for some other reason, how can we find ye t' ask your permission to cross yer forest?"
Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
After the assistance the centaurs offer them, Earc adds, "It is good to know these forests are guarded so well. How can we tell what is your territory, so we can avoid it in general? I have a tower on a rock outcropping, down where the river trolls used to lair. If I can ever be of assistance, you can find me there."

'Blackjack' Amistad
"At least these where not wicked hybrids of the Morlocks." Amistad thinks. He offers his thanks to the centaurs and asks them about the forest. How far many days trek in length and if they have encountered orcs on the northern Orctongue River. Are there more of these Morlock tunnels about? It would be good to now how deep and wide their domain is.
If we can push on another two or three hours that would be fine.

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
The Centaurs smile thinly and remain silent on the topic of how to find and recontact them. "Your desire was to move onward most swiftly.... Yes?"
"We defend these realms from the orcs to the north, who are ever alert for any perception of weakness in that defense. The Morlocks are like rats and like beneath all of the forest, mindless vermin pursuing their lost goals. You'll find them as far as the trees still grow -
mostly to the west, since this eastern reach soon gives way to the swamps across the river. To measure their domain in your days marching... I'd saw many weeks," he says, considering thoughtfully.
They bid farewell with polite courtesy, turning and galloping back into the forest boughs. You trundle on with your carts, making it about a half-mile when you spooks a herd of majestic elk, which hoot their protest as they take flight before you. You've made it a full mile from where the Centaurs left you when the sun begins to set.

If we are out of the woods, Earc suggests a fire. Then says he will take first watch if nobody cares about order.

Re: Expedition - Amistad: Down the Morlock Hole II - 06 July
You estimate you have about five more miles of forest ahead of you.
