Olaf, impressed with the dragon-dogs's flame-broiling abilities tosses some more scraps, lofting them in high arcs to see if the creature can toast the meat in mid-flight.

The dog shows incredible agility as it snatches meat from the air, scarfling it down mid-flight. Its wings are indeed fully functional. It is entirely focused on the meat, however, and after several mouthfuls it turns and flies off into the darkness of the cavern, uninterested in the party beyond this basic need of hunger.

After that, time passes without incident. Night and day have little meaning here under the earth under the continual glow of your magical charms, artificial light without dawn or dusk. After several hours pass, Achaedany wakes as well, joining Akkara in a weakened but mobile state.

Olaf is sad he didn't get a fire-breathing lizard pet.

"Ye don' look good," he tells Achaedany and Akkara.

'Blackjack' Amistad

"But it is good to have you back. We must be more careful though. I suggest we find out where that group of Morlocks came from. No one has come by checking on their disappearance yet. We should move on soon I think." Amistad suggests that and offers to lead the way down the tunnels again.

Earc pauses. "Are you sure about that, Blackjack? No offense, mate, but you look like shite. And Achaedany and Akkara look only slightly worse. And we have no healers among us. I think we are not as prepared for this venture as we thought we were. I say we take this gold, the beast parts that might be good for magical studies, and the gems we've found and return to town. Then we can head back out with better knowledge and understanding and, more importantly, better prepared with a healer or two."

Earc votes to take the treasure and spell components, load them into some of the wheel barrows, and get out while the getting is good.

okay, with an injured crew and no healing at hand, Amistad has no complaints about exiting the tunnels and coming back better prepared.

Earc loads one of the wheelbarrows up with the bags of gold treasure and the material components scavenged off the creatures.

"Achaedany, can you handle this barrow? I'll keep a spell prepared in case we have company..."

Wasn't there something about that from whoever we fought in the forest? The ones with all the gems?

Anyway, that's just Olaf grousing. I'm okay with leaving if that's what everyone wants to do.

(The dryad gave you a vision in the crystal orb showing the spawning pool of the Morlocks, which was also studded with faceted gemstones. :) Finding it was your original goal in entering the tunnels, but the visions showed no vector or distance to aid you. You have been travelling half a day at dungeon-exploring speeds, aiming due west.)

Earc finishes his work dissecting what he deems to be the useful components from the bug-bear corpses. He gets four gossamer insect wings and a pair of spinnerets from each bug-bear. The party then pushes the bugs and morlocks over the ledge to the cavern floor below, disguising their actions here.

You strike your camp, taking the carts (which each hold about 100lbs of material) and filling them as best you can. Achaedany is barely able to move under her own efforts and cannot fight, but Akkara offers to push the cart which Earc has requested she handle. That means Blackjack, Earc, Olaf, and Akkara can push one cart each in addition to their normal packs and gear. Blackjack and Olaf each have carts laden with broken golden objects while Earc's cart is laden with electrum ones. Akkara pushes the fourth cart which has the gristly bugbear parts and then is filled the rest of the way with electrum items as well. Thus encumbered, they opt to leave the mounds of copper thread.

Treasure discovered so far:
  • 24 bear-sized insect wings. (24lbs) (Akkara)
  • Six pairs of bug-bear legs with spinnerets. (12 lbs) (Akkara)
  • 32 worn electrum pieces taken from dead Morlocks (Akkara)
  • Golden ring taken from dead Morlocks (Akkara)
  • Three carts-full of spun copper wire extracted from the nodules of wax (300lbs)
  • Two carts-full of broken golden items (200lbs) (Blackjack, Olaf)
  • Two carts-full of broken electrum items (200lbs) (100lbs Earc, 60lbs Akkara)
  • Almost a sackfull of silver utensils and items stolen from cabinets near the beds. (50lbs) (in backpacks)
You set out, lumbering down the hallways with your wheelbarrows of metal goods looted from the dump site. You move slowly but with the benefit of the map to follow you have no difficulty making your way back the way you came, and since you're not mapping you find you move at about the same speed. You figure that you're almost back to the room with the fountain and bed alcoves when movement in a side passage catches your eye.

You see a dead biped on the floor, swarmed over by a flock of five small creatures. The creatures are covered in dark blue feathers with a body shaped like a snake's. Its face resembles that of a turtle and its eyes remind you of an eagle's. Each one has clawed feet, a pair of feathery wings, and a pair of short antlers. They tear at the flesh of the creature below them with their sharp beaks, for the moment uninterested in you.

Earc of Toll's Tower

The party already greatly reduced in strength, and not wanting to mess around with another encounter, Earc reaches into a pocket of his robes and pulls out a bit of fine white sand, throwing it into the air towards the creatures...

Olaf keeps his crossbow ready. If Earc's spell doesn't drop all the snake birds and they attack, he fires.

Amistad

puts the wheel barrows of goodies into a line for any defensive wall and hushes the folks hoping the sleep spell works. The biped, is it a Morlock or another 'hybrid'? I wonder of we should take captive any of these hybrids for further study?

in case blood needs to be shed, Amistad will break a few bones with Axe melee [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21 Axe damage [1d8+2] = 4+2 = 6

Earc's sand places a torpid atmosphere over the branch hallway; all five of the serpents collapse, their wings still as they fall to the ground. The group takes the opportunity to look more closely at the bipedal creature: It is indeed a dead morlock. It has no apparent belongings besides its own meager clothes.

"It seems the creatures are turning on their masters..." Earc murmurs to himself as he approaches the sleeping creatures that were formerly feeding creatures. "Maybe we should just let them sleep it off and then finish off eating this morlock when they wake. It might be that the enemy of our enemy is our friend and we should stay slaying them."

He looks at Blackjack and Olaf to see what they think.

"Don' see a need to kill beasties not be attacking us," says Olaf with a shrug. "Long as they sleep til we be gone."
