Earc looks to their party leader, Amistad, for the decision on how they should make camp.

While Blackjack ponders the stars in the evening sky, Earc begins looking for a suitable place for holing up for the night. Not wanting to anger the talking trees any more, he sets up a "fire" with his Continual Light driftwood.

"Same watch as before?"

Amistad

okay with guard rota.

This forest is more occupied than we first thought, Cyclops, faeries, orcs, morlocks, bullywugs, trolls, grumpbears, treants, dryads, dragons and centaurs, just need a talking badger....

The party makes a faux fire with the magically-glowing driftwood, illuminating their campsite but providing no warmth or dryness as another cold, wet, night passes. Earc sleeps soundly while the others take watch, seeing nothing but fat rain drops and the chattering of their cold teeth as the wrap in their wet clothes.

The sun rises dully in the grey, overcast skies above the forest canopy and the group rises to pack and depart. Olaf, ever wary of the trees, sees three of the towering, leafy oak trees turn to walk away into the forest as he rolls up his bedroll.

(Earc can adjust memorized spells. Everyone is now -2 for exhaustion. You can pursue the treants if you like; if not then I'll move you forward.)

Date/Time: 6:00am, 12 July 2021
Light: Sunlight
Effects: -2 from exhaustion
Distance travelled: 11 miles today, about 15 miles total
Injuries: Achaedany (seriously wounded), Akkara (seriously wounded), Blackjack (moderately injured)

Earc of Toll's Tower

"Let's get out of these woods so we can have a proper fire, shall we?"
Once everyone is ready, Earc gets into his place in the marching order and gets on with marching.

Amistad

anyone else got a potion of giant strength, anything to speed us on our way?

not wanting to stick around in the forest (pardon the pun), Amistad moves on.

Earc nods, "I do. Here." He pulls a potion of golden liquid out of his pack.

If it matters who drinks it (stronger person able to carry more weight), then Earc gives it to the strongest person. If not, then he will drink it himself and carry what he can in giant form to help speed up their progress...

As the trees wander off to disappear among their kin, the group rousts itself for another day's hard slog, pulling their laden carts through the thick undergrowth of the forest. Achaedany is still pale and can hardly move herself along the route, but everyone waivers as two days exhaustion lays heavy upon them.

They decide to use a potion to speed their way along. Blackjack again quaffs the potion, growing abruptly to the size of a giant once more. He scoops up the handcarts in his arms and strides through the forest, covering two miles of the wooded ground before the potion expires and he shrinks back to normal size. They accomplished eight hours work in the course of two hours, leaving everyone in better spirits.

The hard slogging of the day then resumes, punctuated by the daily rain showers again soaking them through the afternoon. The forest is finally beginning to thin and transition, which Blackjack tells the others means that your less than a mile from it's edge, for sure. You'll definitely break out into the plains by nightfall.

That is when a roar startles you all - a huge grumpbear, a sadistic look in it's goblinoid eyes, rears up as you approach it's hiding place, clearly intent on choosing one of you for dinner.

Is "grumpbear' a typo or another of your weird monster creations?

Olaf shoots a blowgun dart at the attacking . . . whatever it is.

Blowgun (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13 doesn't include -2 because of the damned trees

Sorry, previously introduced. The lumberjacks coined the terms for Grumpbears and Weaseljays as the things that plagued them most often. It is a monstrous, extra large bear with mixed goblin features and low intelligence.

Earc remembers from experience that the Grumpbear is unaffected by his sleep spell, so he uses a Morlock dart as well, after telling the hirelings to fire their darts at the grumpbear as well...

Crawler Dart [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9 Damage [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2 plus paralysis

'Blackjack' Amistad

uses his totem power to launch a 'jump' effect to the grump-bear. Shield and axe in hand he lands close by and swings at the head of the creature.

Axe melee [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17 Axe damage [1d8+2] = 1+2 = 3

(Cool - the jump counts as a charge.)

Olaf and Earc pull out their blowguns and fire their darts, hoping that the Morlock's special sleeping draught will help knock out the ferocious bear before them. Akkara startles, exhausted, and fires off her crossbow at the beast as well. Their bleary-eyed shots fly wide, however, and miss the beast. (Subtract one dart each.)

Blackjack grips his totem and his axe, letting out a tribal yell as he launches himself through the air. He covers the distance between himself and the beast with a single leap, bringing his axe down in a powerful blow. (Double damage, 6hp) The bear tries to retaliate with its long claws and vicious sawteeth, but it is surprised by the flying lumberjack and is toppled over by Blackjack's momentum, landing on its back. (Crit fumble, lose a turn)

(Shooting again risks hitting Blackjack. Post two rounds of combat while it recovers.)

Amistad

The logger goes into a chopping frenzy, stressed and tired he just goes berserk at the grump bear and ferociously attacks the creature.

Axe melee [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15 Axe damage [1d8+2] = 6+2 = 8
Axe melee [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20 Axe damage [1d8+2] = 7+2 = 9

sorry forgot to factor in -2 penalty from exhaustion but maybe get similar bonus for prone bear?

Correct. +2 prone and -2 exhausted cancel out.

Eh, that's more than enough damage. We'll just close this out. :)

Blackjack continues screaming as his exhaustion and rage mix with the power of his tribal totem. He brings the axe down upon the Grumpbear over and over until it is nothing but gobbets of red meat and fur splattered on the forest floor.

Olaf charges the goblinbear, pick held high ready to strike, only to pull up short when Blackjack does the job all by himself.

"Ungh," grunts Olaf.

"Trees'r no trees, we make a fire tonight."

"By the gods..." Earc mutters as the lumberjack chops into the grumpbear as if it was a rotten tree trunk.

Later, Earc nods at Olaf. "We still don't want to risk the anger of those treants, though, but we should be far enough away from their woods by nightfall that we can safely light a fire. Think there's anything of this grumpbear good enough to cook up and eat," he asks Blackjack.

OOC: one dart marked off.

The group is grateful to be free of the forest only two hours later, and a mile safely beyond its enchanted boundaries by the time night falls. Olaf stubbornly sets a fire, making it even perhaps a little bigger than it needs to be, just for the joy of burning trees to ash. The party has their first warm, restful night in days and wakes considerably brighter the next morning. Achaedany still suffers along with only grumbled protest, her face remaining pale but at least grateful that she's not hauling anything. She needs a full day of bedrest before she gets the kind of relief she needs, and everyone knows that warm beds are not far ahead, now.

The next day passes without event as the group trundles its push carts over the grassy fields, following the river southward towards Frogmorton. You cover about seven and a half miles before night falls, knowing you have less than four to go before you are home. Another night passes with a warm campfire, and wood that doesn't watch you while you burn it.

It is just after dawn on the next morning, still too early for the group to rise, when they are disturbed. Akkara is on watch and wakes the group with a loud squeal: "Rats! RATS! Oh my Gods they're... HUGE!!" As you waken, you see thirteen rats of unusual size, larger than dogs, starting to raid your camp supplies. Akkara looks terrified, perching atop one of the handcarts to get away from them.

(All awake, nobody surprised, declare actions.)

And just in case you need a visual... Giant Rat Attack. :)
