The group considers their options briefly as they stand in the twilight. The cave would be most secure, but with no other exits and with putrified goblin remains to contend with first. In the vale, they have the dead human, 'Clive,' as well as the hummocks of vines and brambles which seem to be consuming the massive wolf carcasses beneath. If not threatening, it is a bit creepy. They ascend the far ridge, which gives them vantage of this valley and some cover, as there are scattered large boulders. On the other side of the ridge, they see a grove of trees about 150' away, clear signs of a camp site within the trees confines, and no less than three fire pits spreading around it and one more up-slope on the facing ridge beyond. A large host must have been here, likely within a month.

Piers

"I think the trees should give plenty of cover and allow us to have a fire tonight without to much worry. Now, how are we going to organize our watch schedule?" says the cleric of Baudh.

Dabney

"However you like. Wake me when it is my go unless you'd like me to take the first."

Dabney will roll out his blanket near the other members of the group and nibble one some rations.

Malenor

I assume that the camp fires are all extinguished and none are alight? Can we notice any movement in the trees by the camp fires?

Piers

How about this for a watch schedule, if Piers is #1, Dabney #2 and Malendor #3? Everybody gets 6 hours, which is all we need right now. Everybody does 4 hours as part of a pair. One of the pair changes every 2 hours
Watch Schedule #1 (6 hrs sleep)
Hour On Watch On Watch
0-2 Chrcter 1 Chrcter 2
2-4 Chrcter 1 NPC 1
4-6 Chrcter 3 NPC 1
6-8 Chrcter 3 NPC 2
8-10 Chrcter 2 NPC 2
Sorry the text is a bit wobbly!

With the watch established, the group settles in under the trees and spends the night. Besides some sprinkles of rain, nothing interrupts them. After ten hours of shifts, they pack up and are ready for their next move.

Dabney

He washes down his breakfast of trail rations with a few gulps of wine. "Where to from here?", he asks of Piers while settling into his pack.

Piers

Over his own quick breakfast, Piers consults the chalkboard he's sketched out his rough map on. He takes the time to note the location of the giant ant nest and the cave they investigated the previous night.

"Well, yesterday I think we were heading in a West to Southwest direction", he responds to Dabney. "My overall plan is to try and approach the tower from the north. So I think we need to head directly west from here until early afternoon, then turn south. That should have us heading in the right direction."

Piers gestures towards where "Clives" bones are laying in the grass. "But before we leave, I should like to bury him. It is not right to leave him exposed like this. Who will help me?"

You've already made the bend to go due south.

Also, please deduct one ration from your character sheets. When you do this, please put it in your post with the OOC tag, like this.

-1 ration. 9 remain.

Dabney

"I'll help you put him to rest". He removes the pack again, and not having a spade or shovel, begins collecting rocks to cover the remains.

Piers

The cleric takes another look at his make-shift map. "Ah, it seems we are already far enough west, so proceeding south should get us in the vicinity of the tower. We shall have to proceed with caution from here on. I'm sure we shall be more likely to encounter goblins".

He claps Dabney on the shoulder. "Baudh will bless you for this, my friend. If we all pitch in, a simple cairn should not take more than an hour or so".

Delighted at the thought of Baudh's graces, he throws himself into the work.

An hour of heavy labor and the cairn is built. 'Clive' is entombed where he lay, a stone bier now rising amidst the field. Piers intones a prayer to Baudh for the unknown man.

With the remains of the human honored, the group begins southward along Piers' expected route, heading due south. The foothills get more and more pronounced as the mountains loom closer; passing over each ridge and valley makes walking slower than before and limits how far you can see into the distance.

It is just after mid-day when you top a ridge, looking down into a sun-dappled valley below. You spot two creatures - a horse and a mule - each wearing partial tack with torn leather straps. They graze in the middle of the valley below, about 200' away, eying you warily as you come into view.

9 Rations (10-1)indicated on Malenor's character sheet. I noticed that I equiped 20 Trail Rations before I started on the expedition, though.

Piers

"Yes, definitely odd." says Piers. He tries to inspect the animals for any sign of injuries. He also tries to take a look at the terrain near them. Any gear or bodies laying on the ground? Are there any clumps of rocks or trees that might be hiding unsavory characters in ambush?

"Are any of you good at animal-handling? Or does anybody have any food that might attract them over?"
