Marullus, is there sufficient light now that we can extinguish the torch? If so, we can stow the torch (after putting it out, just to clarify that we aren't that dumb of a group) and try and sneak up the ramp.

The way ahead lit by the torch sconces, the party douses the lantern and tucks it way. They resolve to go back up to the entrance and try to find their errant companion, Bandy Sandybanks and set off left down the corridor back to the main chamber where they entered. They discover that the dead Cention has been unearthed from his hastily-constructed hiding place of stacked boxes, the dismbembered body parts now lying openly on the floor next to the blood stains from where the tail was hacked off. Passing by their handiwork, the group cautiously sneaks up the ramp.

You discover that it is almost mid-day; by the dappling sunlight of the open door you see a gathering in the room above: a Cention stands on its hind legs, its torso stuck up through the trapdoor in the ceiling, its forelegs balancing on the ladder. Two other centions keep watch over him with concern while a half-dozen kobolds mill around excitedly. You sneak up the ramp and they do not notice you.

You then hear Bandy's voice -- a yell in anger coming from the room above, "Why can't you lot just leave me alone?" This is immediately followed by a jerking movement by the Cention on the ladder and the sound of a crashing thud which can only be a small body hitting the floor.

1. Is there anywhere for Bremen to slip into the shadows?
2. Are there still sconces burning near us?
3. Are there any doors/gates/portcullises tucked away that we have noticed?


If there is a way to slip into the shadows, Bremen would have the trio with him fall back, then fire a shot from the shadows. When they get charged, he would attack from the rear with the magical warhammer.

If there are sconces, we could lace the ramp with oil first, then light it when they charge us. So far, fire has (mostly) been our friend.

Sure. You have surprise, you can hide.

Not on the ramp (hence the increased shadows) but sunlight in the ground-floor chamber above you and torches in the chamber below.

This is a bit of a stretch (given you're counting on them passing you on the ramp), but okay. If you succeed on the roll, it works.

I'm generally not picky about having means to light stuff. You have torches on-hand.

Fire works better on mindless undead than intelligent adversaries. ;) It also keeps you away for 10 rounds... if time is critical...

Welcome back, Marullus.

Damn. They've got our man. Unless you lot got a better plan, how about you all wait here a moment. I'll slip ahead, fire a shot. And when they come at you, I'll attack from behind. We fight it way out, and the relic be damned for now.

Unless he hears objections to his plan, Captain Bremen sneaks ahead 20 get our so and finds a place to hide. Once he feels confidently hidden, he will release a shot.

Markd temporarily sheathes his knife in his belt while he pulls out one of his few remaining arrows. He hopes to hit one of the centions before they can strike him.
(assuming they start charging toward them per Bremen's plan)

Captain Bremen sneaks up the ramp, crouching amidst the shadows and stacked crates and bags. He launches a crossbow bolt - it startles the Centions, but glances off the stone wall. The kobolds go wild with excitement, yelling and bouncing, while the Centions raise a call of alarm. The one in the hatchway hurriedly extricates himself, emerging with a longbow in his hands, while the other two draw their scimitars and charge where Bremen crouches, his position not as hidden as he hoped.

Their scorpion legs skitter their bodies forward faster than you might think and Markd's arrow shot passes over their shoulders. Bremen dives out of the way as the first Cention strikes outward with its curved tail, but the second Cention catchs him with its curved scimitar blade, slicing through leather the armor on his torso. (-4) Irving charges forward to Bremen's defense, but not quickly enough to catch the blow. He brings around his own longsword to drive back the first Cention, interposing himself between it and Markd to protect from its next strike. Florian dithers, hanging back with Markd and uncertain of his own course.

Markd performs the well practiced hooking of his bow to the strap on his shoulder and pulls out his dagger. Though it isnt as long as the sword, he feels he is is more confident with it in his hand.

Son of a...! Having dropped his crossbow as they charged, Captain Bremen swings the holy warhammer of Baudh into the nearest cention. Be there in a minute, Bandy!

Bremen's hammer comes around in a vicious arc, splitting open the carapace of the Cention before him before it can bring its scimitar around for another blow. (-11) The large half-manbeast collapses abruptly -- the kobolds excitement turns to alarm and all six of them flee backwards out of sight towards the tower door.

Markd and Florian charge from the rear, joining Irving as they flank the second Cention. Markd and Irving both strike true (-5, -4) - the creature hisses as it suffers from the blows but again strikes outward with its long tail, this time coming down in a forceful arc which plunges into Markd's shoulder, injecting him with its venom. (Save vs Poison, please.)

The third Cention, now extricated from the trapdoor, draws his longbow and fires down the ramp. His arrow strikes Irving, grazing his flesh. (-3)

The cracking sound is pleasing to Captain Bremen and he brings his hammer to bear against the other creature. But seeing Markd get stung distracts him.

nice roll! Remember that having your sword in the other hand gives you a shield/paying benefit from one attack/round.

Markd stumbles back, his body fighting off the impacts of the venom as it courses through his veins. Bremen joins the other three in counterattacking against the Cention - it parries with its scimitar, barely keeping all four of you at bay as its own black ichorous blood seeps from its existing wounds.

The Cention at the top of the ramp launches another arrow, this one grazing Florian as he bravely tries to engage with his flail (-2). It is then joined by two more Cention archers from outside. The three bowmen fill the top of the ramp, another Cention jockeying for position out of sight to the side. Two more arrows careen towards the melee, sailing past Irving and clattering on the stone floor beyond.

Captain focuses his attention on the cention at hand and is rewarded with another crack. Too bad they aren't lobsters. Let's roll this guy in his side and use him as a shield unless you've got a better idea.

Markd instinctively switches hands with his dagger, hoping it's speed will help him swat away the next blow.

He swings his long sword in his other, but not effectively.

You'd need time and study to figure out their anatomy, where the poison sacs are, how they combine, etc. Can't do that on the fly.

The archers release their arrows as you all charge, their arrows (thankfully) clattering past you on the floor. Irving and Markd come in first and are deflected as the Centions try to keep them at bay by parrying with their bows. Bremen and Florian then strike from behind, the powerful blows of their hammer and flail striking home and crushing the carapaces of two of the archers. Their bodies drop to the ground, their faces stricken with horror.

Behind the archers you see two more Centions wearing clerical vestments marked with the six-pointed sun, alternating with black and grey rays. With four of their companions lying dead on the floor, the Centions choose a tactical retreat. One of the clerics points in your direction and utters forceful words - the room swells abruptly with inky blackness, the lantern and sunlight unable to penetrate it. You hear the scuttling of the Centions heading towards the door.

how close was Bandy to us when we reached the archers? What state was he in as far as we could see (before it got all black)?

You couldn't see Bandy. You just heard him yelling at a Cention whose upper body was stuck through the trap door. Then you heard him collapse onto the wooden floor of the second level.

Correct. You have four dead Centions on the floor and can feel around for the ladder upwards to where you presume Bandy to be. You also have your chance to act against the fleeing Centions through the darkness right at this moment, if you want to take it.
