Great. I think there is a PC cleric with that group. Piers? any thoughts on joining?

Halfpint blew 3 of her 4 recruiting chances, and needs a cleric and a stable/groom likely.
Dandelion - female half-orc beautyqueen in training (The Lone City in the Wildlands) OSRIC
Halfpint - female halfling badgirl wannabe (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL
Mark'd - charismatic human fighter (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL

Great minds think alike :D . I was just looking at that thread and thinking it might be a good adventure for Piers. (Maybe he'll be able to bring Rowine and Crowager too). And if Lug is coming along, we'll have another chance to try the "Set Lug on Fire" gambit. :D

So yes, Piers will come along.

just a heads up on present thinking with Amistad.

He has invested in a riverboat / large canoe and hopes to recruit folk to join him in exploring the boglin ruins (12 on map) and then the farside of the swamp. Possible contact with the northern orc tribes. Bulletin board has advertisement. Room for at least four extra characters maybe five to six if Halfling sized.

Not sure what player characters are around town and available to approach. Newbies always welcome.

Hereby invite all Citizens of the North to the

Harvestide Festivies and Games
on 23 September 2021

Games shall include horsemanship, strength, marksmanship, and the telling of tales.
Other attractions include visits to
  • visits to the famed Fountain of Absolution, renowned for its healing properties
  • reenactments of the Slaying of Scatha and reclamation of the Dwarven Halls
  • reenactments of the Conquest of the White Tower from centions and ghouls
  • tours of the skeleton of the wyrm, Scatha
  • vendors stalls
Image

Concerned about safe travels? Five gold pieces pays for an escort with the Knights of Baudhil, providing safe passage through the wilds between Gaul and the White Tower.

See Expedition Planning Thread for more details: viewtopic.php?f=353&t=5921&p=401351#p401351

Contests Include:
Storytelling: As with Marullus's festival, constestants need to submit an IC story. They will be judged by a CHA roll, maybe with a bit of extra weight added by other players' IC actions/posts.

Melee: All contestants will wear non-magical, padded armor, and use real, non-magical weapons - all provided by the White Tower. The reason is that raw attributes (and luck) can be attributed to Baudh's Strength and Blessings. The clerics at the White Tower will make sure no PCs die, and healing shall be provided free of cost via the Fountain of Absolution, which you will get to role play. :)

Archery: all mundane bows, crossbows, thrown axes, etc, will be allowed, again in honor of Baudh's Strength.

Joust: entrants will need their own horses. Other than that, I am open to suggestions about how to run this. Please offer ideas!

Prizes will be offered, but the pot won't be huge, because Marullus told me that Bremen has to provide the coin out of his own coffers, not the imaginary coffers that make the White Tower run. :( I am thinking 100gp for first, 50 for second, 25 for third. (We'll see what is left over after he builds the museum for the skeleton.) And all contestants are free to petition to become a Knight of Baudhil.

Thoughts?

Oh. Also, apparently that talking wolf-thing that was hunting the Orb killed half a squad of the Knights of Baudhil. Anyone interested in hunting it down? Bremen would lead the expedition, and bring Stantz and Father Clauson. He would recommend magical weapons.

There are areas to explore out there, as well, with a hope for treasure.

This is, of course, dependent on someone running the expedition. ;) Otherwise, Bremen will likely go to the Bogling Ruins.

What are the participation rules on BremenFest? Is it limited to any PC who isn't currently on an expedition as of Sept 23? Do we wait to see what the return date is for expeditions that are currently out? Or is the expedition "out of time" and any active not-dead PC can particpate?

And regardless of the rules on timing, is travel to the White Tower "free," or does it advance the game clock for travel from Gaul?

All my PCs who might be interested in participating are out on expeditions at the moment.

I suggest making the festival past more than a day. The game clock then moves to the end of it. All expeditions that return can spend their downtime at the festival and all expeditions leave again after it is over.

I'll edit the announcement to reflect the time.

I would think that, once an expedition returns to civilization they jump forward in time. I suspect that PCs can use that time jump to travel to the White Tower. 5gp for guaranteed safe passage, but players can opt to go on their own and risk encounters.

Still, any thoughts about a joust in OD&D? STR-based rolls to hit, and maybe a DEX roll to keep you seat, with a -1 modifier for every 2 points of damage? Keep your seat to advance to the next round?

To not make special rules...
- a to-hit roll to hit. A hit vs Ac9 breaks on the shield (1pt), a hit between AC 9 and actual AC breaks on the body (2pts), a hit against actual AC dismounts.
- if you want a chance to keep your seat, a Dex modified by a damage roll seems fair (I would use a Dex roll for avoiding dismount when your horse fails a morale check.
- if you don't have a war horse, your horse needs to pass a morale check when the Lance is coming at them. ;)

That is simple enough, and still works on attributes. Though I'll not entirely sure how the morale check vs dismount works.

Anyone else have an idea?

If Amistad wants to wait on his expedition, would he be interested in hunting a talking werewolf, that was took wolf from on a not-full-moon, and can shred through half a unit of knights? If we're all still alive, Broken can join to with Amistad's expedition after the tourney. :)

I like that "Bremen" autocorrects to "Broken."

In favor of advancing the clock and creating more opportunities, I'd recommend having folks go and participate in the Fall Festival (hosted by Bremen) on the Fall Equinox and then beginning new expeditions afterwards.

Alethan is going to DM the canoe-trip upriver to the orc mountain for Amistad's group (allowing Starbeard to join as a player). I defer to him on the start-time and method.

I'll GM the group that is going with Bremen to hunt the wolfwere creature. I prefer that be delayed to allow the other expeditions to come back, anyway.

If anyone is interested in exploring to the southwest among the mountains and foothills of the Dwarven King, just hit up Zhym. :)

I'm excited to see the development that Rusty Tincanne is doing in the far west. It isn't ready yet, but I hope you look forward to it, too.

That is an appropriate autocorrect. I look forward to a day when this story allows him to be fixed.

I'll start writing up the tournament ASAP. I'm looking forward to it! Everyone fighting for Bremen's admiration and gold. :P

I'm happy to hold the hunt for that creature until after the tournament. See who might be willing to travel with him.

About this...

I have a whole lot of ugly going on in my life right now. I'm not sure I'm able to add DMing a trip to the list of things I can't get done properly just yet.

I'll re-evaluate my situation in a few weeks and update at that time...

Sorry, guys. RL is kicking me in the ass. And not fighting fairly... :(

Sorry to hear it Al.

Regarding the tournament, I am working on it in between everything else in life. So expect that to start up in the next couple of weeks, if not sooner.

Sorry to hear about the ugly.

When the expedition does eventually get started, I might send Olaf along. How well does heavy armor mix with canoe travel? ;)

Not very well if you fall overboard.

Am trying to locate potions of water breathing, not sure if the old crone at the market or wizard Earc could make them?

There are spellcasters with the spell, which would be the preferred first resort. (I'll let them out themselves, as I don't remember who, off-hand).

I'm not adverse to putting a few up for sale through the Old Crone if no spellcasters roger-up.
