Oh. I was thinking that, if the sword had 4K XP in it, the first 2K XP was used on the Light spell and the second 2K XP would have only given it a +1 vs [some creature]. (That was based on my experience of only getting +1 vs undead with Bremen's sword, but he only had 2K XP in it.)

Bandy's sword is +1 vs undead. So if gargoyles are undead, then I have a magical weapon.

I reread the description. Not undead.
Gargoyles are demonic-appearing beasts that are magical in nature, and may only be harmed by enchanted weapons or magic.
Maybe you can club one with the figurine, though.

That's sort of an interesting rule interpretation question. The LL description says gargoyles "may only be harmed by enchanted weapons or magic." A sword that's +1 vs. undead is enchanted (if imbued items are "enchanted," which it seems they are since Irving's sword was imbued) with a bonus that applies only to undead. So one (kind) interpretation could be that gargoyles can be hit by a sword that's +1 vs. the undead, but the bonus doesn't apply.

IOW, under this interpretation, any weapon that's imbued could hit a gargoyle, even if the weapon merely glows or has charm person charges or such, because gargoyles can be hit by any "enchanted" weapon, not just weapons that are +1 or better.

I know it's a stretch, but, hey, when you're being attacked by six fickle gargoyles, you stretch.

@ Zhym: I read that the same way. My interpretation included using a singing doorknob as a bludgeoning instrument. Can't wait to see how Marullus interprets it though.

In Keehnelf's West Marches game, my very first character died on her very first mission. Just two girls with knives (thief and MU) in the wolf-infested woods. Somehow we expected a good outcome :)

Dave, the fun thing about LL/OSR is that the chance of death is ever-present.

Unfortunately, that's also the sucky part of it.

But I'd much rather play a game with this challenge than the current 5e system, where you can go negative up to the same as your HP total and have to fail three death saving throws before you get to TRUE dead. Nothing wrong with that way of gaming, if that's what you like. I just prefer the way by which death happens much more quickly if you do something stupid. It's more like instant feedback. ;)

hey, I took out two gargoyles on my way down, so that's not bad. And we do have another cleric who might be able to heal me before I bleed out.

If I die, I'll just roll up another character and try to join another expedition. I like the way Marullus runs the games so far.

With Bandy stabilizing him this round, he won't die right away. If the party can cause the gargoyles to route (or better yet, kill them off), you should be fine. Many of the characters in this game have narrowly avoided death. Some more deserving of survival than others.

The good news: we have a staff that smashes gargoyles into rubble!
The bad news: the gargoyles will gang up on whoever has the staff that smashes them into rubble.

Man... One week you are all lamenting the lack of TPKs and the next you are complaining about character death. It is so hard to keep up!

I'm all for character death. Just not my character death. ;) Or I guess anyone else on the Fingers Expedition.

Captain Bremen can think of a couple folks in Finger's party that he wouldn't mind seeing go bye-bye. :P

Actually, I'm really bummed that things turned out the way they did, because I would have loved to have had Bremen join that expedition, gargoyles and all.
