On the island: Exploring the southern trail

#1 Post by Argennian »

~ Ulrich takes the lead and the trio of the two dwarves and High elf make their way onto the game trail and into the treeline and thick brush. Ziller has already signaled to Griffo and Thalion to approach him and he quickly gives them instructions before dispatching them to follow along behind Jovak and his two companions. The path, although easily still visible, becomes more and more smothered on each side by the thick flora as they progress. It follows somewhat parallel along the base of the cliff (roughly about 45-50 feet away on your left), and rises ever so slightly as it progresses into the island canopy. Hanging branches and leaves, both big and small, hang in the way across the trail but offer no other seemingly malevolent intentions to their forward progress. Bugs the size of small fruit scamper out of the way and those flying buzz about the heads of the newly-arrived island invaders as mighty Hazara continues to bring in the new day.

After a few hundred feet, the smothering floral canopy breaks open and reveals a small stream flowing from left to right. There is a small pool about twenty feet off just to your left, about roughly 8 feet in diameter and maybe a few feet deep. Other than bugs zipping about in the morning air and some crawling about here and there, there are no other animals visible. The calls of some of the islands avian inhabitants can be heard in the distance further ahead.

Ulrich helps Jovak across the small brook and leads on. The game trail again enters the thick brush, this time turning more eastward than southeast and descending slightly. After about another 120 yards, the chocking underbrush and bushes break out into an open area at least 150 yards long (west to east) by at least 80 yards wide (north to south). It is the lagoon that Ziller described alright. The game trail appears to split here and continues on on either side of the lagoon. Straight ahead to the right is the first small beach, which extends about 25 yards along the southern edge of the lagoon. At the far end of the lagoon is the other beach, which is much larger and looks to encompass the entire eastern side. That is also where the salt water lagoon looks to be fed by the sea to the south via a small inlet. Looking through those trees to the south, it appears the southern shoreline of the island is perhaps 35-40 yards through the trees and brush.

"Well, Ulrich, have we arrived? What do you see ahead?" queries Jovak as he looks about blindly, taking a deep breath of the cool island air and puffing out his huge barrel chest.

Lauranna easily steps on to dry ground, reveling in the feeling beneath her feet. Walking with the two dwarves, she looks around at the jungle scenery, happy to be among the flora and fauna once again. "What a glorious sight." she says aloud to nobody in particular. As she continues with their walk, her senses start to return and she becomes more cautious, watching and listening for any cause for concern.

When they reach the lagoon, she lets out a deep sigh. "It's beautiful! What a wonderful place."

"Indeed we have, my lord," says Ulrich. He does his best to describe the view to Jovak.

~ Lauranna looks excitedly about the lagoon area and exalts her appreciation at the beauty of the island scene. Ulrich does his best to describe the current view to the curious, blinded cleric/fighter lord. Hearing the mirthful contentment of the High elf maiden's voice and the details of the younger dwarf's description, Jovak takes another deep breath and smiles. "That far beach over yonder past the lagoon sounds like a good place for us to relax and commit to our meditations, Adept Rachstaad. Lead the way over then, that we may begin to properly enjoy this fine day!"

Ulrich leads Jovak along the right hand trail past the first, smaller beach and over to the far beach at the eastern edge of the lagoon. Lauranna follows the two dwarfs, looking back towards the game trail they just arrived from to see Griffo and Thalion appear out of the thick flora. The two archers wave silently to her and move eastward around the lagoon on the left hand trail. Both of them have their bows to hand and scan the immediate area for any potential dangers.

The trio reach the beach and Ulrich leads Jovak over to sit where a large palm tree trunk has fallen sideways accross the sands from the south, about halfway down between the treeline and the water. Jovak bumps the tree trunk with his foot and after leaning down to feel blindly with his hands, settles down in the sand with his back to the fallen palm. He sets his masterwork battle axe to his side and repositions the wand in his belt line. He cocks his ear to listen to the sounds of the surf at the shoreline just to the south past the section of trees and brush. He nods his head approvingly and takes another deep breath, stretching out his bulky arms and legs which make his massive muscles flex and ripple in response. "Now THIS is more like it! Let us enjoy a drink and quick bite and settle in for a spell, friends!"

Griffo and Thalion make their way to the other edge of the beach, acknowledging Ulrich and Lauranna silently, obviously following Ziller's orders to keep a wary out and not disturb Jovak if at all possible. The warrior duo exchange silent hand signals and nods to each. The halfling fighter moves silently into the flora on the continuing game trail to the east and the Wood elf creeps quietly along behind the trio to move along the eastern side of the small inlet to the lagoon, apparently intent on heading south towards the shore to have a look see about.

It is indeed peaceful and beautiful here. A large fish jumps in the middle of the lagoon after a low-flying bug and the sounds of the islands avians calling out to each other further east drift westward on the cool, morning breeze. The sounds of the surf to the south are almost therapeutic in their rhythm, offer a relaxing background tune to top off the serene scene.

As the two dwarves sit and relax, the elf wanders around a while before deciding to go for a swim. Stripping down to her skivvies, she wades into the water before plunging below the surface.

~ While Ulrich and Jovak settle in on the beach by the fallen palm, Lauranna strolls casually about the small lagoon, taking in the surroundings and breathing in the fresh sea air and smells of the island's heavy flora. A few small birds chase each other around and some gulls can be heard cruising the surf to the south. Mighty Hazara continues her daily climb towards her position high in the midday sky and the golden rays of sunlight feels warm and rejuvenating. It is indeed a tranquil spot and certainly offers a welcome, relaxing and quiet diversion to the hustle and bustle of the ship and all the activity back in the cove.

While the two dwarves share a drink and bite, Lauranna decides to go for a swim. She strips off her garments and wades out into the lagoon. The water is cool but not uncomfortably so. A few small reddish crabs scramble out of the way and a school of tiny fish scatter as the High elf maiden wades in deeper. After a look back over at Ulrich, she plunges into the water. It is salty but clear enough to see by without burning her elven eyes too badly. There are small fish and crabs that move around in the rocks and colorful coral below, which is populated by various starfish and urchins here and there. Other than a brilliant-colored fish about two feet long with large, square teeth that swims up from the bottom and makes a close pass, eying the High elf's submersible intrusion warily, nothing seems to pose any danger or potential issue.

Lauranna comes up for air and a quick look back over towards the beach reveals that Thalion has returned from his lagoon-inlet reconnoiter. He looks started until he sees Lauranna is safe and merely taking a morning swim. He lets out a held breath and smirks a smile in her direction before moving over to settle in by where the inlet leads out to the southern beach. A few minutes later, the halfling archer Griffo emerges from the eastern treeline and moves over to the north side of the lagoon, about halfway down, to take up a watch position there.

Jovak and Ulrich finish their post breakfast drink and snack and look to be settling in for their meditations. Griffo and Thalion appear content to keep watch on the surroundings, obviously intent on carrying out Zillers orders to keep a wary eye out on their fellow companions.

Eventually Lauranna emerges from the water, suitably refreshed. She selects a spot near the other two tho sunbath and dry off. After a bit she wonders aloud. "I wonder if this might not be a good place to try and find a familiar?"

The peace & solitude of the lagoon is finally disturbed...

#8 Post by Argennian »

~ Lauranna finishes up her swim in the hidden lagoon under the watchful eyes of the halfling archer and the Wood elf fighter/thief close by. Griffo has found a seat on the northern side of the lagoon, on another fallen palm at the edge of the treeline. He keeps his trusty bow and arrow on his lap and at the ready. His halfling eyes mechanically scan the immediate area for any movement or potential danger. Thalion has settled down in the shade with his back against a palm, just at the outer edge of the eastern beach on the opposite (eastern) side of the inlet, about forty feet or so from where Jovak and Ulrich sit. Lauranna catches him gawking at her scantily-dressed self as she walks out of the water. He quickly averts his eyes in a feeble attempt to feign as if he wasn't.

Feeling much more refreshed and vitalized, the High elf maiden returns to the beach where the two dwarves are now meditating together. Ulrich has his eyes closed and mutters a barely audible prayer or incantation in dwarvish. He appears not to notice her approach or presence. She settles in stealthily so as not to disturb them, intent to lie in the sun for a spell and consider what nobleman Ziffiris said in regards to her possibly pursuing finding a familiar. Mighty Hazara's warm and soothing rays stream down from above, smoothing out any wrinkles of uncertainty and benevolently blocking any consternating thoughts of over-consideration. Lauranna finds herself feeling more relaxed than she has since she was gravely injured during the mermen attack. She can feel her strength and stamina returning and takes solace in the fact that she will be back to her normal self very soon.

The minutes float by effortlessly and time begins to drift carelessly as the morning progresses. The sounds of the surf in the background sooth the mind and massage the senses. A world apart from the recent weeks spent aboard the Seahawk as she sailed the open sea and seem to encounter ever potential danger between Karagonia and their current island locale. The feeling of the warm, comfortable ground, the sounds of the surf in the background and the succulent smells of the small island's prolific flora being carried on the cool, late-morning breeze is suddenly interrupted by a frantic shout from the halfling Griffo. "Look out behind you!"

*** I need a d6 surprise roll for the party here, please! ***

OOC1: okay then! Obviously something is going down and at this point and Griffo is the only one that is privy to it. Once a surprise roll is made for the party, you can go ahead and post with an quick (1 segment) initial response to his call and I'll detail what you see (if you look) and what is happening. Once I do so, we'll roll initiative and you can then state your character's Declared Actions accordingly! 8-)

Some rather large retile trouble charges forth...

#10 Post by Argennian »

~ Lauranna snaps to from her sun-induced coma of comfortable bliss at Griffo's urgent cry. She sits up quickly and spins around to see what has the halfling so distraught. Her High elf eyes take in the front half (almost 20 feet) of what appears to be a giant monitor lizard emerging from the treeline. It is mostly dark grey in color and flicks it's long tongue towards the trio on the beach sitting barely 50 something feet away, a hungry look in it's eyes!

Ulrich and Jovak are slow to stir, having been in deep meditation when the warning was announced, and look up in confusion in Griffo's direction. Thalion jumps up from his seat by the inlet, obviously not ready with his bow as perhaps he should have been. He quickly draws his longsword and dagger and begins to move towards the massive reptile. His halfling archer counterpart was ready, however, and the familiar twangs of his masterwork bow's string can be heard mixed with the whistle of incoming flight arrows...

Griffo: To Hit, bow (+7 to hit/-2 penalty for medium range) [1d20+5] = 15+5 = 20 (hits up to AC-5), Damage [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

Griffo: To Hit, bow (+7 to hit/-2 penalty for medium range) [1d20+5] = 18+5 = 23 (hits AC-8), Damage [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3

Griffo: To Hit, bow (+7 to hit/-2 penalty for medium range) [1d20+5] = 5+5 = 10 (hits AC10), Damage [1d6+2] = 3+2 = 5

The first two arrows hit their mark, one driving into the beast's left shoulder and sinking almost to the fletching, and the other going in about halfway, square in it's upper chest just below it's long neck. The third arrow sails off into the treeline to be swallowed by the island's thick flora...

*** I need a d6 initiative roll and Declared Actions for the party for Round 1! ***

OOC: okay fellers, the previous roll for the surprise round indicates that the party was not surprised. Since our halfling bow specialist Griffo had his bow to hand and at the ready, BtB, he was able to get his first shots off in the surprise round. The party will then act on their rolled initiative for what we'll consider Round 1 of the encounter with the giant Monitor lizard! 8-)

Giant Monitor: taken 9 damage (2 flight arrows from Griffo)

Party vs Giant Monitor lizard, Rd 1

#13 Post by Argennian »

Encounter with the Giant Monitor: Round 1

Party Initiative [1d6] = 3

Initiative
Party: 3
Lizard: 5

~ Seemingly not at all phased by the halfling's quick, preemptive ranged strike, the giant Monitor breaks into a sudden lumbering run straight at the three juicy morsels on the beach ahead. Although it may have appeared somewhat lethargic initially due it's massive near forty foot length, it's burst of speed is sobering in its rapidity as it begins to quickly close the distance from the treeline, hissing loudly and hungrily.

Griffo's quick, honed reflexes allow him to get off another two arrows at the giant lizard, one just before it made it's move and the other right before the Wood elf Thalion closes the distance to it from the side...

Griffo: To Hit, Bow (+7 to hit/-2 penalty for medium range) [1d20+5] = 6+5 = 11 (hits AC8), Damage [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

Griffo: To Hit, Bow (+7 to hit/-2 penalty for medium range) [1d20+5] = 18+5 = 23 (hits AC-8), Damage [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3

The first flight arrow sails left and away but the second one strikes the massive reptile in the neck, sinking in about halfway.
The giant Monitor has closed just over half the distance to it's proposed breakfast with no signs of letting up when the quickly-moving Thalion intercepts it and strikes out desperately with both his blades...

Thalion: To Hit, Longsword (no penalty for primary weapon when fighting two-handed) [1d20] = 17 (hits AC2), Damage vs large creatures [1d12+1] = 5+1 = 6

Thalion: To Hit, Dagger (-1 penalty for off-hand attack due high Dex) [1d20-1] = 13-1 = 12 (hits AC 7), Damage vs large creatures [1d3+1] = 3+1 = 4

The Wood elf fighter/thief's well-maintained longsword makes contact and slices a moderately-deep laceration into the massive lizard's flank but his follow up dagger attack glances harmlessly off the Monitor's tough skin, to no effect. The hungry, cold-blooded menace remains unconcerned with the halfling and Wood elf's attempts of obstruction and continues forth, opening it's great maw in drooling anticipation as it closes in.

Still wounded and realizing she can do little more here than become a meal, Lauranna quickly grabs up her gear and leaps away from the others. Ulrich calls out the danger to Jovak as he reaches for his mace and makes to get up. In a fluid blur of movement and deceptive speed for one so heavy and thickly muscled, the unarmored cleric/fighter lord grabs up his masterwork battle axe in one hand, draws his wand from his belt line with the other and jumps to his feet, spinning blindly to meet the oncoming reptilian juggernaut.

The giant Monitor zeroes in on the invitation of the meaty meal and strikes out with both of it's huge front claws, hitting the former dwarf general with one for a heavy, raking blow (8dam) and nearly knoking him off balance. It also strikes out at nearly the same instance with it's massive open maw to bite down with horrible precision and power upon his upper body (nat 20;14dam), pinning his left arm to his chest with a sickening crunch of broken ribs and arm bones.
The cleric/fighter lord cries out in painful surprise and drops the wand from the immobile grasp of a broken arm as the huge island predator lifts him off his feet as if he were naught but a tasty toy. Jovak swings his masterwork battle axe in a desperate attempt to cleave the beast in the head but just misses...

Seeing Lord Jovak in a bit of a predicament, Lauranna changes her mind about inaction, she circles around to a position so she can run up the back of the beast and gain access to its head and neck.

Not sure how long that would take, but since the lizard is currently occupied.....

She decides on her new dagger, and attempts to sink it to the hilt just where the skull meets the spine.

[1d6] = 3 party init. [1d20+5] = 15+5 = 20 to hit [1d3x2] = 1x2 = 2 backstab damage.

OOC for Lauranna

#15 Post by Argennian »

Nuke66 wrote:Seeing Lord Jovak in a bit of a predicament, Lauranna changes her mind about inaction, she circles around to a position so she can run up the back of the beast and gain access to its head and neck.

OOC: Since Lauranna is still officially incapacitated until the next day, she can't normally do any running or commit to melee. I will, however, state that if she makes ongoing d20 Constitution checks, and gets a 10 or lower, that will allow her to "push" it and be able to accomplish what she's intending to do. I will even allow a unstated bonus modifier to said roll for movement only, in the first or even second round.

So that would mean (with a successful d20 Con check) she could run well around the ongoing melee to get into a position to attempt a flanking attack in 1 round (the attack then being the following round). If she wanted to get into a position to try for a back attack, that will take another round (2 rounds total) to do so, and will be predicated on Ulrich, Thalion and Griffo engaging the giant lizard and drawing it's attention. Understand that in order for a thief class to get that +4 to hit backstab bonus, they have to approach and make the attack "unobserved" by the target. The giant lizard saw you initially and will likely see you as you run off, but with two rounds of ongoing, engaged melee, and Lauranna being in a position where she could attack from the rear, I'd allow it.

So, if Lauranna can make a d20 Con check (+ the unknown bonus modifier), that will get her quickly around the beast and out of melee in one round. She would then need use another round to stay low and creep to a point where she'd be sure the giant lizard can't see her approach (no d20 roll there). She could then commit to her backstab attempt on the following round with a successful d20 Con check to commit to the forced and intense action. Failure during the movement round will indicate half-speed (i.e. 2 rounds to get behind it and 1 round (without a roll) to get into a position to make the backstab attempt.) Failure during the backstab/melee attack will indicate the loss of the +4 to hit. Although the creature is large (40 feet long) and needs to be engaged by more combatants than are present to be considered surrounded, I'll still allow a +2 to hit bonus for a flank attack, with full damage.

I hope that makes sense and that you are okay with this, Nuke. Normally, when a character is incapacitated BtB, they are down for 1 week and cannot run or fight. Period. That's always been a very harsh penalty, imo. I've always felt that when magical healing and other special measures are being applied, I like to at least give that the character the option to commit to "pushing it" by making successful dice rolls following the above caveats.

Another point of order to consider is that just because the giant Monitor has Jovak firmly in it's jaws, does not mean that it can't attack with one or even two of it's free front claws. Not that this fact would affect Lauranna's Declared Actions above, just saying that once she attacks, she will be considered as engaged in melee with it until she could flee or withdrawl!

Nuke66 wrote:She decides on her new dagger, and attempts to sink it to the hilt just where the skull meets the spine.

OOC: Nuke, I'm assuming that the +5 bonus to hit is with the +4 to hit bonus for a backstab and the +1 for the Dagger of Venom? Just want to be sure!

As another point of order, the base of the skull on this giant Monitor might actually be higher than Lauranna could reach if it's in the process of rearing back and attacking Ulrich, Thalion and Griffo with one or both it's claws, even with Jovak locked in it's jaws. I will say that she could easily reach the base of it's neck no matter what though. If you are in fact using the +1 Dagger of Venom, a hit will be a hit and the effects will be the same regardless of hit location!

Can Ulrich reach the wand that Jovak dropped? Assuming he cant,

Ulrich swings his mace at the beast, hopefully avoiding hitting Jovak.

To hit with mace [1d20] = 11

In case that hits:

Damage with mace [1d4+1] = 1+1 = 2

OOC: So noted!

Go ahead and edit your post to include a d20 Constitution roll. That will let us determine Lauranna's movement rate.

OOC: sure, Ulrich could easily reach it. Only caveat is that he'd need to know the magical trigger command to be able to utilize it!

Thought so. Ulrich will attack as noted above.
