Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 13

~ Through the ghastly frigid night air arrives a pulsing drone to both accompany and offset the persistent rumble emanating throughout the area. The unknown result of the massive magics and energies behind them crash against each other with wild crackles and pops, harsh snaps and quick ear-ringing booms. The hairs on your body stand on end as the electricity in the air amplifies. The metallic taste of the local atmosphere grows thicker and the smell of burning flesh and molten iron kick your olfactory senses in the sensitivity department.

Locked in the deadly and most desperate battle of competing magics and clashing powers, the red sphere protecting the wizard suffers under the onslaught of the demonic beast’s crushing green one. The elf removes something from his belt pouch and slaps it to the glowing shaft of the wrothy red staff. A perceivable boom results and the red sphere about the wizard grows stronger and pushes back. The green sphere wails its displeasure and threatens to burst. The elven mage takes another strained step backwards as the creature’s massive dish eyes pulse yellow and green. Something unseen happens to cause the wizard noticeable strife, as he goes down on a knee and leans his head back in a silent scream. He near buckles again but holds himself up gallantly, never letting go of the staff as if his life and everyone else’s depended upon it…

South of the trail, the soft and eerie bluish light continues its propagations. A barely-perceptible flicker regards the brush and thicket at its potential source …

The red armored priests of mighty Moradin square off against the last of the ancient dark-skinned warriors just north of the trail. It snarls and growls deeply, showing off its sharpened teeth and squinting its surging yellow eyes at each of dwarves. Heeding the invitation, Ulrich rallies his empowered faith and, despite his moderate wounds, again besets the humanoid with his trusty staff. He swings low in another powerful arc of hardened wood and just catches the warrior in the leg. Working off his fearless cousin’s play, Hartnid maneuvers and lashes out with his heavy flail, landing a well-placed blow to the other side of their mutual enemy. It roars in surprised rage and swings its glowing green dagger at both cousins with near-blinding speed, just missing Ulrich’s neck but catching Hartnid on the left arm for a minor wound (2 dam).

To the south of the trail past the stand of trees and dense thicket, more bursts of glittering blue sparks, the sounds of steel upon steel and the grunts and growls of pain and rage continue...

Back on the trail, the half-huddled yet feverishly-fussing group of remaining party members goes about their continued business. The half-elf woman assists the male gnome with her fallen companion. The female gnome is back to working again on the old man in the bright-colored robes. The young nobleman steps over nearer Gentleman Billy but does not take his eyes off of the massive contention between with the elf wizard and the thing that should not be. Sheba continues to whine and bark at the bluish light.
The young child snaps out of her near-paralyzed, wide-eyed state and begins screaming and kicking at her elderly guardian in a fit of fear. With a look of ultimate dread, the old man struggles to calm and contain his flailing charge. His patented death-clutch reengaged, he pulls her down to the valley floor and wiggles up against a tree and half into a shrub. He looks around with wide eyes himself, as if expecting death itself to appear with an invitation for two, or more…

At the rear of the group, now just north of the trail, Lauranna pursues their enemy towards the thicket as Emm bewails directives of malevolent intent from her somewhat incapacitated state. The High elf follows through, striking out from the flank and above with a timed thrust but misjudging the erratic crawling behavior of their fleeing quarry. The hooded figure continues to flee on all fours, apparently intent on escape at any and all costs.

As before, still no clear sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard (that moved into the brush south of the trail), Griffo and Caelvanna (that moved into the brush after him and the half-orc), the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Caelvanna: 6 points of weapon damage
Hartnid: 6 point of weapon damage
Griffo: 5 points of weapon damage
Ulrich: 6 points of weapon damage

*************

Gentleman Billy: still unconscious (stabilized; status unknown); being dragged back along the trail eastward by young nobleman.
Old Knight: lying unconscious/KIA? (impact that broke tree) somewhere in the brush; status unknown (the bluish light continues to glow brighter and now flickers near where he went down.)
Burly Guard#1: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow); status unknown
Old Man in colorful robes: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended to; status still unknown
Old Half-elf Man: felled from missile weapon and unconscious (status unknown); being dragged back along the trail eastward by the half-elf woman.
Armored soldier: KIA

Initiative, Round 13: Nuke rolled a 4 for the party; the baddies rolled a 2 (d20 & d100 rolls calculated for ongoing circumstances)

The quiet elf lady continues to pursue her foe, lashing out with a renewed fury.

[1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15 to hit, rd 14
[1d6] = 6 damage

Yea, the roller finally liked me.

Gritting his teeth, Ulrich raises his staff once more. He hopes it will be the last time.

To hit with staff [1d20] = 14

Damage with staff [1d6] = 2

Haggard, tired and bleeding from multiple wounds, Hartnid attempts to follow through and finish off the warrior.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 7 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6 damage

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 14

~ The wizard and the unworldly beast remain locked in their deadly struggle of mighty magics and unyielding wills ahead on the trail. The elven mage stays to one knee and again claps the contents of his hand upon the staff. Another burst of red energy surges and the additional power is almost enough buckle the green orb around the embattled wizard. The beast rumbles its frustrations and immediately reapplies its indeterminable will. A green orb of dark energy materializes in front of the creature and then suddenly slams into the red sphere protecting the elf with incredible force. Rays of color burst forth followed by a thunderclap of what sounds like stone on stone. The elf is knocked backward as the sphere around him dissipates. He hits the ground in noticeable pain and but somehow does not lose his grip on the still glowing bright staff…

South of the trail, the source of the eerie bluish light now flickers and grows brighter with a neoteric intensity. Something is moving up and out of the bushes…

The cousins Rachstaad square off against the last of the dark-skinned humanoids. With a faith-driven vehemence and urgent need, both clerics attack simultaneously. Ulrich again attacks low with powerful swing and again catches the warrior in the leg. Hartnid anticipates their opponent's move and swings his flail mightily, hoping to follow suit and end the stalemate, but misses. The enemy warrior again growls its acrimony and strikes out at both of the dwarves, missing Ulrich but catching Hartnid for another minor wound (2 dam).

To the south of the trail past the stand of trees and dense thicket, twangs of bowstrings and the grunts and growls of pain and rage continue...

Back on the trail, the crouched and stooping group of the remaining party members continue to do their best at their various endeavors as the situation unfolds around them. Sheba stops whining and barking to stand unmoving, transfixed by the now-brighter and flickering bluish light coming up out the bushes. The old man appears to finally have his young, flailing charge well in hand and continues to stay low, huddling against the tree and nearby bush.

North of the trail at the rear of the group, Lauranna doggedly pursues the fleeing enemy with continued accentuation as Emm huddles in the brush and gathers her bearings. The High elf moves around a tree and strikes out with a massive downward chop of her short sword. The blow lands true and with a final desperate cry, the hooded assailant falls limp and apparently unconscious in the underbrush.

Still no clear view or sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard (that moved into the brush south of the trail), Griffo and Caelvanna (that moved into the brush after him and the half-orc), the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Hartnid's movements begin to slow. He sways on his feet, from exhaustion, from pain, from loss of blood due to multiple slashing and stabbing wounds. He knows he won't survive another blow... and then the dark warrior will be free to turn on his cousin. In desperation, he calls upon Moradin to aid him.

"In the name of the Dwarf-Father, I command you," Hartnid says loudly, pointing a finger at his enemy. "SLEEP!"

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 15

~ The wizard picks himself up from the trail in time to be encircled by a new and improved sphere of green energy. He buckles and contorts within it, in obvious, horrid pain. He holds on for dear life with both hands to the staff. It continues to glow brightly and pop frantically but is significantly dimmed by the powerful dark energy of the creature’s hatred. A laughing rumble echoes throughout the valley as the beast widens its unnatural glowing eyes in anticipation of the sure outcome. The glowing green, swirling fog about the beast is now beginning to slow again. For the first time, the thing takes on noticeable, additional detail and an even more chilling presence. It smiles in apparent pleasure and sizes up its assumed to be assured victory…

South of the trail, the eerie blue light becomes suddenly much larger and flickers in and out amazingly quick to reveal… a figure? It had not been there moments before. Although the light is brilliant and near blinding to the eye, the outline of a figure can be made out standing in the brush by the base of the broken trunk of a tree. It begins to move towards the horrible beast enthralled by its elven quarry.

The lone remaining humanoid swings its glowing-green dagger about it wildly as it sizes up the still-glowing red clerics of Moradin. It stabs out again at both the dwarves, barely missing Hartnid but easily catching Ulrich. Most thankfully, the blow is merely a glancing one. (1 dam) Hartnid calls upon the power of the Dwarf-Father...
Xaxyx wrote:"In the name of the Dwarf-Father, I command you," Hartnid says loudly, pointing a finger at his enemy. "SLEEP!"
... and attempts to cast a command spell at their opponent. It doesn’t seem to understand the words but stops still to consider the cleric with a suddenly confused look. Ulrich attempts to take advantage of this moment and swings his staff feverishly but the attack comes up short...

To the south of the trail behind the stand of trees and dense thicket, continued twangs of bowstrings and pained growls of disapproval continue. Movement suddenly, just beyond the thicket to the right (west)...

Back on the trail, the makeshift triage of on the spot but questionably-proficient caregivers and observers exalt hopeful mannerisms of anticipation. The numerous victims present continue to lie still and motionless, regardless of the endeared ministrations. Sheba begins barking again at the flickering bluish light that appeared out of the bushes. The old man continues to wrestle desperately with the young child in his again questionable custody…

At the rear of the party and just north of the trail, the game appears to finally be over. Not wishing to risk another deceitful and potentially-deadly ploy, Lauranna steps forward and quickly slices the throat of their felled adversary lying face down and unmoving. Blood sprays forth and the figure loses any hope for incredible rebuttal. Still gripping her bloody scimitar, Emmblinks her still-blinded eyes and leans up out of the bushes.
"Did you get her, elf maiden? Is the assassin dead?" The druidess remains motionless and cocks her head to strain for any response.

There continues to be no clear sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard (that moved into the brush south of the trail), Griffo and Caelvanna (??) (that moved into the brush after him and the half-orc), the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Caelvanna: 6 points of weapon damage
Hartnid: 8 point of weapon damage
Griffo: 5 points of weapon damage
Ulrich: 7 points of weapon damage

*************

Gentleman Billy: still lying unconscious (stabilized; status unknown)
Old Knight: lying unconscious/KIA/figure in the brillant blue light?? (impact that broke tree) somewhere in the brush; status unknown
Burly Guard#1: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow); status unknown
Old Man in colorful robes: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended to; status still unknown
Old Half-elf Man: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended to; status unknown
Armored soldier: KIA

OOC:

Initiative, Round 15: SocraticLawyer rolled a 3 for the party; the baddies rolled a 4 (the d100 roll again noted and accounted for)

~ The light from the elf’s staff is much dimmer than before while within the green sphere. The glowing blue light surrounding the figure that just appeared near where the old knight fell, is getting brighter and helping with the vision here as well.

Initiative, Round 16: I need Xaxyx to roll a d6 and a d20 for the party.

"Yes, he is down, keep still until you can see, I am going south to help."

Lauranna looks for any of her throwing daggers quickly before moving to the battle still raging to the south.
