Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 18

~ The somehow still-alive old knight crouches for a moment, grips his massive bright-blue two-handed sword high and low in both hands, and springs upward with tremendous effort and force. The mighty glowing blade pierces the thick, dark green magical sphere about the armored warrior with a flashing sizzle and audible thunderclap. The beastly abomination roars a rumble of rage and frustration and raises its left front leg with the apparent intention of smashing down upon the knight to crush him.
The mangled elf, standing with the help of his vengeful glowing red staff, leans into it and points his hand at the wand that he’d thrown down at the feet of the creature previously. The wand explodes in a bright red explosion and a tangible force from the blast is felt by all. The horned beast near loses its balance and has to lower its left front leg to avoid being knocked over. The dark green sphere around the knight shimmers and blinks.
On perfect cue, the still-glowing holy knight gathers himself, spins and delivers a mighty strike in an blindingly-quick arcing motion that slices the horror in the chest, center mass. Another crackling pop rings out to over the dim of battle, accompanying the spray of alien lifeblood through the frozen night air and down upon the coastal trail. A near deafening and shrieking rumble of pain bellows forth as the beast as it backs up in a near leap, knocking down a half dozen trees and sending a shower of pine splinters raining down upon the area.

The remaining enemy warrior continues to convulse awkwardly upon the valley floor and emanating a shrill gurgling. Not hesitating, Ulrich jabs down forcibly with his staff but just misses. Hartnid picks himself up from the underbrush and takes a brief moment to assess himself and his surroundings. Seeing that their mutual enemy has not been completely stilled, the still-glowing red dwarven cleric gains his feet and finishes his previous maneuver. Getting to the other side opposite his cousin, the dwarf strikes out again with his flail but misses due the awkward spasms of his target flailing and flopping about in the underbrush.

Lauranna creeps cautiously south of the trail towards the stand of trees and dense thicket from which the previous encounter raged. Silence awaits the High elf as she suddenly pulls up short, her sword at the ready, and notices something lying on the cold ground in the underbrush to her right and heads towards it…

Back on the trail, the group of huddled and cowering party members all dive for cover after the explosion and latest clash of magics west of them. The gnomes recover quickest to continue the application of previous aid. The elder female half-elf, who’d dived upon her fallen mate to shield him, lifts herself up and reexamines him desperately for any noticeable change. The young nobleman, his long dagger still to hand, quickly looks about the group’s perimeter for danger and then returns his gaze down the trail to the pernicious, escalating conflict just west of them. Sheba lies down upon Gentleman Billy’s chest and continues nosing and licking his face with anticipation. Nearby, the young child crawls out of the bushes just off the trail with a look of shock pasted upon her terrified visage and looks over at the others.

Back east just beyond this group, Emm, continues to crouch low and defensively within the bushes, her eyes blinking quickly but unable to return to clarity. Cocking her head to the side, she hears her High elf companion creep off southward and strains to hear anything above the dim of battling magics west down the trail.

There is still no sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard (that moved into the brush south of the trail), Griffo or Caelvanna (that moved into the brush after him and the half-orc), the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling. Lauranna currently creeping into thicker brush to the south and potentially moving out of sight.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Hartnid: 8 point of weapon damage
Ulrich: 7 points of weapon damage

*************

Gentleman Billy: still lying unconscious (stabilized; status unknown)
Burly Guard#1: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow); status unknown
Old Man in colorful robes: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended to; status still unknown
Old Half-elf Man: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended to; status unknown
Armored soldier: KIA

(OOC: Sorry... rough weekend.)

Hartnid rises to his knees, glancing about. Seeing that his cousin was still on his feet and the enemy figure was not currently a threat, he spends a moment to gather his wits. He then stands up, grabs his flail, and heads over to help Ulrich finish the creature off.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 3 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4 damage

Eyes blinded, and now ears ringing from arcane explosions, Emm curses her stupidity once again. Had she simply slit the thoat of the heathen who tricked her, she could be assisting her companions, or at least not be so confounded helpless. She will remain in position.

(Oh. Right. I was a post behind. Gah...)

Mystified by the convulsing of their opponent, Hartnid tries desperately to strike the villain with his flail.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 8 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6 damage

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 19

~ The combined attacks of the resurgent knight and the nearly-crippled wizard, although visually telling in their effect, does not buy them the advantage surely hoped for. The beast in the again swirling green fog moves much quicker than it did previous. In a lumbering, sideways leap, it repositions itself further west down the trail in an apparent attempt to not remain flanked by its two adversaries. Another green magical sphere, this one much larger in diameter and darker than the previous one, again forms about the embattled armored warrior. At nearly the same time, it turns its head back towards the elven wizard and opens its gaping, toothy maw. A conical shaped dark discharge hits the elven mage and he crumples to the ground with a horrid scream. The old knight swings his two-handed sword with obvious desperation in response but this time, the mighty, glowing blade cannot penetrate the evil magics of the circular cage. The beastly abomination roars in triumph as it turns its full attention back upon the knight. Although the wrathful red staff continues to wail and pop vengefully, its master does not move, lying motionless on the trail where he fell.

The lone remaining enemy from the northern skirmish line flopping around in the underbrush before the glowing red clerics of Moradin suddenly stops its convulsing spasm and woodenly climbs back to its feet with an awkward quickness. Its eyes are no longer glowing yellow but it has a tangible green aura suddenly pulsing all about it. The strange black dagger, although no longer glowing green, is still in its hand and it brings the ancient-looking weapon up in front of it to face off with its adversaries. Ulrich swings his bloodied staff in a mighty arc at the dead-looking humanoid but again misses. Hartnid recovers his composure and with the might of Moradin backing him, swings his heavy flail and just strikes the humanoid warrior square in the chest with a heavy thud. The sound of crushing bone can be heard and the creature just stares back at the dwarf with a slight snear on its visage. After what seems like a second of eternity, it falls backward woodenly, dropping the dagger. The greenish aura disappears and it finally appears to be finished!

Lauranna crouches down in the brush to momentarily check upon someone or something. With readied sword to hand, she looks back up and around her cautiously, and then creeps forward into the stand of trees and dense thicket from which the previous unknown encounter raged...

Back on the trail, the young noble cries out when he sees the wizard go down "No! Lathalamas!” He jumps up and sprints over to where the elven mage fell, going to his knees and dropping the dagger in his hands in order to take up the unmoving form of his former protector in his arms. He begins shaking the mage frantically, as if hoping that will bring him around. Watching what just happened, the female gnome barks out orders to the others and points back east along the trail. She lifts the older man in the colored robes and locks her arms under his. She barks another order and begins to drag her charge back up the trail. The female half-elf scoops up her fallen mate and while looking west towards the demonic beast, begins to follow her new comrade. The male gnome lifts up Gentleman Billy in his arms and follows suit. Sheba jumps around frantically, looking after the young nobleman for a fleeting moment and then follows the one carrying her master. The young child previously frozen in place, climbs unsteadily to her feet, the look of shock and fear still upon her young visage, and looks back at the unmoving form of her elder guardian lying on the trail. She begins shaking and sobbing frantically.

Just east of the now moving group, Emm maintains her still, defensive posture within the bushes. Although she still cannot see anything but blank, swirling color, she hears the shouts of the others and can sense them coming towards her…

There is still no sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard, Griffo, Caelvanna, the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling. Lauranna has now also crept into the dense thicket to the south and is currently out of sight.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Hartnid: 8 point of weapon damage
Ulrich: 7 points of weapon damage

*************

Gentleman Billy: still unconscious (stabilized; status unknown) and being dragged back up the trail eastward.

Old Man in colorful robes: still unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow; status unknown) and being dragged back up the trail eastward.
Old Half-elf Man: still unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow; status unknown) and being dragged back up the trail eastward
Armored soldier: KIA
Elven wizard: lying apparently unconscious (felled by beast breath; status unknown) and being attended by the young nobleman.

Lowering his flail, Hartnid reaches a hand out to his battle-crazed cousin. "Enough, Ulrich. Enough! He is finished." He looks down at the mangled corpse once more, shaking his head in disbelief.

Glancing about, Hartnid takes in the scene as it currently unfolds. "We have to rescue as many as we can. Moradin save us."

Hartnid will attempt to make his way to where the wizard fell. Nudging the young nobleman aside, he will see if the man still lives. If so -- and if he has time to do so this round -- he will use Cure Light Wounds in order to stabilize or even revive the wizard.

Cure Light Wounds [1d8] = 5

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 20

~ Above the echoing vocals of the beast in the swirling fog arrives another emanation. It starts distant and faint at first, being barely audible but escalates rapidly into a wailing battle cry. A glowing red figure streaks in from the west on the trail, much faster than should be possible, and slams into the creature with tremendous force. Powerful red and green magics clash once again in a brilliant flash and wicked crackle. The abomination lets out a surprised, pained roar that threatens to shatter the frozen night sky as it lurches back from the blow. At the same moment, the dark green sphere about the old knight shimmers and wavers due the creature’s distractions. The armored warrior strikes out quickly at the magical confine with his great sword in a massive effort and cleaves the circular prison in two with another brilliant impact of bright blue energy. The sphere buckles under the focused assault and with a snapping pop, vanishes.
The creature spins to its right to face the old threat returned and opens its gapping maw. A massive breath weapon of green fire blasts the glowing red figure, completely engulfing it. In doing so, however, the beast has unintentionally offered its flank to the old knight and he takes immediate advantage. The armored warrior suddenly blazes bright blue again and with a burst of divine power, leaps upon the back of the ancient nightmare, landing just behind its grotesquely massive, horned head. The creature immediately shakes violently and bucks in a style akin to a wild stallion. The ground shakes from the stomping blows of the heavy beast. The paladin visibly struggles to hold on as if riding a demon from hell…

Back behind and just north of the trail, Ulrich, a raging symbol of mighty Moradin’s power and vengeance, stabs downward violently in a bloody dwarven oath with his battle staff and delivers a follow up, crushing coup de grace upon the motionless enemy. The sound of splintering bone and lifeless flop of the now certainly dead humanoid is the telling response. Hartnid, seeing that their combined enemy is surely dead, stays his attack and grabs a hold of his cousin. He calls out to halt the pointless continuation and redirects their focus to those back on the trail with words of guidance from bolstering faith in their deity. The suddenly no longer glowing red clerics recover their composure from their eerie, deadly battle and Hartnid moves quickly towards where the young noble is cradling the fallen wizard, preparing to cast a curative spell upon him as quickly as possible...

Back on the trail, the young noble continues to shake the fallen wizard desperately, begging and pleading with him through flowing tears to wake up and respond. No reply is forthcoming. He eventually looks up and becomes suddenly still with awe as the old knight jumps upon the back of the beast and clutches at its gnarled mane in an attempt to hold on to the now bucking nightmare. The apparently either dead or unconscious wizard somehow still maintains his grip of the angry red staff. It pops and wails furiously, as if wanting nothing more than its master to awaken and reapply its fury towards the stomping behemoth.

At well over 100 feet to the southwest of where the battle continues to rage with the demonic beast, a brilliant flash of yellowish-green energy blasts out from within a dense thicket. It is immediately followed by a thundering sizzle and crack that can just be heard above din of battle. Darkness and silence follows the blast…

Back eastward on the trail, the two gnomes and the elder female half-elf continue to haul their charges away, obviously intent on putting as much distance between them and the battling demon as they can. They are so wrapped up in their escape that they move right past the crying child. There is no movement from her elder charge as he lies motionless in the brush to the side of the trail. Finally seeming to notice, Sheba stops and bounds back to the young defenseless girl, getting in front of her and nudging her backwards up the trail towards the others. The child pulls away from the alien canine’s nudging muzzle and reaches out for her unresponsive protector. Sheba quickly responds by grabbing the child’s cloak by the hood in her mouth and begins dragging her backward as she kicks and screams in both protest and fright.

Now just mere feet away from the others as they attempt to medivac their fallen party members, Emm continues to crouch within the bushes, her scimitar and other senses at the ready. Her vision is finally coming back to her slowly and she continues to rub and blink her eyes with her free hand to speed up the process. She can just make out the dark forms of the others coming close to her on the trail…

From behind the stand of trees and dense thicket south of the trail, the creeping form of the High elf Lauranna just comes into view. With head looking this way and that scanning warily for danger, she appears to be headed towards where the young noble sits clutching the fallen wizard.

There is still no sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard, Griffo, Caelvanna, the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling.
