Using his cousin's attack as a distraction this time, Hartnid maneuvers to the creature's side. Then he turns, allowing the light produced by the elven mage reflect off of his splint mail, in the hopes of further disorienting the figure as he swings his flail.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 11 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3 damage

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 11

~ The saga between the elf mage and the creature in the green swirling fog continues to unfold on the trail ahead in the near frozen midnight air. The elf touches his light-emitting wand to the head of the angry red staff for a moment and then quickly throws the wand at the ground just in front of the horrid beast before it finishes its rotation. The light burst on the right side of the beast’s horned head begins to wane much quicker than before, just as it stops turning to finally face the wizard and his infuriated red staff. The horror’s massive green eyes narrow with intent as yet another rumble vibrates throughout the valley. The green fog about the beast is swirling faster now and continues growing brighter…

The thick brush north of the trail remains dark and quiet. South of the trail, the eerie bluish light emanating from the brush continues to mysteriously propagate…

The cousins Rachstaad, both of them now glowing red just as the armored dwarf with the hammer was, face off against the injured humanoid warrior with the glowing green dagger as it attempts to circle away. Hartnid begins to move in counter to their adversary and tries to use his armor to reflect the fading light burst. He swings his flail at the humanoid but it ducks away with ease. Working off his cousin, Ulrich times his strike and again catches the dark-skinned warrior with a decent jab. The humanoid staggers from the blow but remains on its feet. It snarls and lashes out with the glowing dagger at both dwarves, missing Hartnid with its first attack but catching Ulrich with its second strike (2 dam). Although wounded, it continues to move amazingly quick. The other dark-skinned humanoid warrior lets out a piercing cry as it hefts the freshly-severed head of the armored soldier in one hand and its own glowing green dagger in the other. It turns to look upon the two glowing red dwarven clerics of Moradin and smiles…

After their mutual opponent is disposed off, the specialist archer duo of Griffo and Caelvanna sheath their swords, reequip their trusty bows and move towards the stand of trees and thicket where the sounds of melee can still be heard, hoping to come to Bog’s aid in whomever or whatever he might be facing. Just before they round the thicket, they slow, move to cover and work their way forward stealthily to get a glimpse of the scene. From just beyond the stand of trees and large thicket, more blue sparks fly accompanied by grunts and snarls of painful, desperate effort...

Back on the trail, Sheba barks and whimpers nervously, transfixed by the growing bluish light in the brush not far away. The elderly half-elf female and the young nobleman both look over their shoulders to see the mage and his indignant red staff square off, face to face with the beast in the green fog. They look back to each other and quickly decide they want to be farther away from the showdown. The young nobleman begins dragging Gentleman Billy further back down the trail eastward towards the two gnomes and fallen men with Sheba in tow. The half-elf female follows suit with her companion.

At the rear of the group, Emm sees her quarry stumble from its latest wounds and quickly jumps in front of the faerie-fired individual to prevent escape. She levels her scimitar at the assassin’s throat and bellows a challenge to yield. Lauranna moves up behind on the opposite side of the trail just as the purplish glow of the druidess’ spell expires. The hooded figure raise its hands in surrender... and tosses something into the air in the process. A blinding flash and pop goes off right in the druidess' face as she thrusts mightily with her scimitar at the assassin's throat. Somehow avoiding the burst of colored light, the High elf swings with her short sword at its back, also with extreme prejudice and malevolent intent. Unfortunately, both of the already-bloodied weapons strike only the unnaturally-cold night air...

The two gnomes continue to apply their ministrations on the old man in the bright-colored robes as the massive encounter progresses about them. Out of the bushes across the trail, the young child somehow breaks free of her elderly benefactor’s bear hug and scampers over towards the gnomes. The old man lets out a startled cry and trips over himself as he moves to recover her. The child abruptly stops crawling when she looks up into the blank, still face of the older burly guard laying motionless on the trail, the large black projectile still sticking out of his chest…

There’s still no sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard that moved into the brush towards the half-orc’s voice, the half-elf archer or the cloaked halfling. Both Griffo and Caelvanna have now moved into the brush and are out of view.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Caelvanna: 6 points of weapon damage
Hartnid: 1 point of weapon damage
Griffo: 5 points of weapon damage
Ulrich: 2 points of weapon damage

*************

Old Knight: lying unconscious/KIA? (impact that broke tree) somewhere in the brush; status unknown (the bluish light continues to glow brighter near where he went down.)
Burly Guard#1: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow); status unknown
Old Man in colorful robes: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended by the gnomes; status still unknown

Immediately regretting her mercy, Emm attempts to slice the jugular of the trickster.

save roll.....drum roll please....

[1d20] = 20 save vs Petrification

Seeing that her foe is still a potent enemy, Lauranna hacks the prone figure, no quarter to be given.

[1d20+5] = 6+5 = 11 to hit, prone enemy.

Damn, but just in case....

[1d6] = 4 damage

Blinded by yet another foul deed of treachery, Emm groans and swings wildly, trying desperately not to be attacked, and hoping she does not harm in any way the Elven lass who helped her.

[1d20] = 15
This would have been good last round...

Allowing Moradin's essence to flow through him, Hartnid presses his attack as well.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 19 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5 damage

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: after midnight)

Round 12

~ The horrid creature in the swirling fog and the embattled elven wizard square off in an exchange of monumental determinations and omnipotent magics. The frozen night air crackles with sudden palatable electricity as yet another sphere of green energy, like the one that consumed the armored dwarf, begins to form about the red one protecting the wizard. His staff begins projecting a much more intense and bright red light and can still be heard droning and popping from within the magical jurisdiction. The mage drops his wand and takes a step backward, reaching for something in a belt pouch as another deep growling rumble permeates the area.

The brush north of the trail is still dark and quiet. South of the trail, the soft and eerie bluish light continues to escalate in brightness…

The dark-skinned warrior facing the still-glowing red clerics of Moradin, lunges suddenly at Ulrich with a look of enthusiastic malice. The dwarf swings his trusty staff mightily but just misses as the quick humanoid gets in under the attack and delivers another blow with the glowing dagger (4 dam). Hartnid rallies to his cousin’s aid by delivering a near-perfect strike to the side of their opponent's head. It falls forward woodenly with a crushed skull, still gripping the now no-longer glowing green dagger in its rigid grasp.
The remaining humanoid warrior lets loose a roaring challenge and lobs the severed head of the armored soldier at the dwarven duo. It raises its glowing green dagger and charges the waiting cousins, lashing out at Hartnid when in range with unsettling speed and somehow getting by his defenses to strike a moderate blow (3 dam).

Back on the trail, the elderly half-elf woman and the young nobleman manage to drag Gentleman Billy and the older half-elf man back up the trail to where the two gnomes still work on the fallen old man. Sheba continues jumping around the precession, barking and whining. The gnomes jump up to help as they get close and quickly assess the new arrivals. The female gnome barks more orders at her male companion and they begin trying to apply the same ministrations on the old half-elf that they did with their previous charge. The young nobleman looks around nervously, eventually turning to face the drama unfolding ahead on the trail with the creature in the fog and the elf wizard. The elderly half-half woman watches the gnomes in action with desperate intensity.
Mere feet away on the other side of the trail, the old man that had lost his balance previous, spastically recovers and moves over to grab up his just-escaped charge. The young child is frozen in wide-eyed horror as she looks into the open and unblinking eyes of the older burly guard lying motionless and presumably dead upon the trail…

At the rear of the group, Emm strikes out blindly at the assassin with her scimitar and misses, suffering the full effect of the sudden flash-bang. Lauranna sidesteps the druidess’ swinging blade and moves over to strike at the hooded figure as it attempts to flee on all fours into the bushes and escape. She swings her short sword at the no longer faerie-fired individual but slices naught but fern and tangled underbrush. The unknown assailant scampers on all fours towards a large thicket nearby with short grunts of obviously-pained effort…

There’s still no sign of Thalion, Bog, the burly guard (that moved into the brush south of the trail), Griffo and Caelvanna (that moved into the brush after him and the half-orc), the half-elf archer and the cloaked halfling.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Caelvanna: 6 points of weapon damage
Hartnid: 4 point of weapon damage
Griffo: 5 points of weapon damage
Ulrich: 6 points of weapon damage

*************

Gentleman Billy: still unconscious (stabilized; status unknown); being dragged back along the trail eastward by young nobleman.
Old Half-elf Man: felled from missile weapon and unconscious (status unknown); being dragged back along the trail eastward by the half-elf woman.
Armored soldier: KIA and just beheaded by humanoid warrior.

**** PMs going out to PCs off the trail, and also to some others with continued situational details only they are privy to prior to Round 13! ****

OOC:

Initiative, Round 12: Tied initiative: dmw71 rolled a 4 for the party; the baddies also rolled (another) 4

~ The burst of light from the elf’s wand has almost completely faded but is now being somewhat offset by the much brighter red glow coming from the elf’s angry staff.

Initiative, Round 13: I need Nuke66 to roll a d6, a d20 and a d100 for the party.

Enemy Disposition at the end of Round 12:

~ 1 remaining humanoid warrior (from north), 1 unknown assailant (at rear/east of party) is still engaged by the trail. *An unknown engagement continues to take place to the south of the trail.

1 warriors of the Northern Line:

Grimacing through the pain, Ulrich swings his staff at the final humanoid, bellowing an ancient dwarven warcry as he does so.

Really hope that's a hit!

Damage with staff [1d6] = 6

Hartnid momentarily freezes as he sees the decapitated head of the fallen fighter, hurled toward him by the last of the vicious warriors. The pain from the figure's dagger stab suddenly snaps him out of it, though, and he whirls his flail in a mix of anger and fear.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 18 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4 damage
