Bog & Emm explore the southern grotto...

#42 Post by Argennian »

~ Bogdan and Emm take notice of the bubbles and decide further investigation is warranted.

The young half-orc explorer leads the young human one back under and further east into the underwater cavern. They stay along the northern wall for reference as they swim downward at about a 35-40 degree angle. It's roughly 20 feet from floor to ceiling along here. As they progress, they pass a few small fissures in the ceiling that emanate an occasional air bubble here and there, perhaps where gas is escaping from cracks in the hard rock.

The underground cavern quickly gets wider than the light coin can illuminate. The duo see no signs of any fish but can spot small, all-white crab and crayfish-like critters moving around between the like-colored stalagmites lining the floor. These natural formations grow in size gradually as they go, and after swimming another 150 feet or so, the smooth yet restrictive ceiling is suddenly gone and the two of them can now see the surface some 35-40 feet above them. There appears to be another waterfall up ahead near the northern wall, just at the edge of illumination. They swim up in the now @ 60 foot deep water along the sheer cliff just behind them, being the eastern side of the rock ceiling that separated them from where the first waterfall was, and breach the surface.

The powerful illumination of Gentleman Billy's light coin treats the two of them to quite the spectacle. Once their eyes adjust from being out of water, they can see that they are swimming in a large, open cavern. It's at least 150 feet to the other (southern) side and nearly as far to the east that they can see from their current location. The ceiling is @ 20 feet above them here and lined with sparkly, bright white and pink stalactites draping down. Some of them come very close to touching the water and further east they appear to form unique-looking columns.

As their eyes adjust, they can see that many areas of the open cavern glisten from what may be more mineral deposits or possibly even tiny gypsum flowers or growths. The waterfall further east along the north wall appears to be flowing out of that wall about 3 feet above the surface versus out of the ceiling like the others. It comes out of a much larger opening, say 3-4 feet in diameter. Beyond the waterfall, there looks to be stone draperies between some of the columns and what could be the far eastern side of the cavern. The air does not seem as foul here as it was in the previous air pockets.

While on the surface, Bog says, "Watch yourself when surfacing from now on." He points out the points of the stalactites so close to the surface of the water.

"This place is huge. Let's keep moving."

Then he submerges again and continues east...

The two explorers swim further east in the southern grotto..

#45 Post by Argennian »

~ After a quick, assessing reconnoiter above the surface, Bog submerges and leads Emm further in, towards the easternmost area of the southern grotto...

They eventually pass the waterfall pouring out of the large opening in the north wall and swim into the scattered labyrinth of columns just beyond. Many of these natural formations are interconnected by thick, mineral-encrusted formations known as stone draperies, and need to be navigated by swimming around or through the gaps.

Since the island explorer duo happen to be swimming underwater, they are naturally looking down and take notice that @ 60 feet through the maze of columns and draperies, the entire cavern floor suddenly drops off straight away into darkness. Most of the columns stop here to be replaced by low hanging stalactites under the surface but a few continue down into the inky depths below. Another 25-30 feet ahead is the far eastern wall of the underwater grotto. A closer look there above the surface here reveals no further passages that they can see from that position but they do notice a series of small holes in the eastern wall up near the ceiling that appear to be seeping water down along the wall in more than a few places. As they both look about this area, they can feel that the water here is slightly warmer than it was in the northern grotto and connecting passages.

Time Spent Underwater: (in the caverns, grottoes & passages)
Bog: 17 rounds

Water Breathing spell: duration: 3 hours (18 turns; 6 turns/level) Emm: 2 hours 43 minutes left
Potion of Water Breathing: 1 hour (6 turns) + 1-10 minutes (DM's roll) Bog: 43 minutes + 1-10 minutes left

OOC: so just to clarify, the cavern continues straight down at the far eastern end. The far southern side of the mostly underwater cavern still hasn't been closely scrutinized of yet but appears similar in nature from what can be seen from the northern side. The waterfall coming out of the northern wall just above the surface is emanating from a mostly circular opening about 3-4 feet in diameter.

Bog looks down, then looks at Emm, then slowly shakes his head to indicate he isn't particularly interested in going down.

If she agrees, then he will turn south, just enough to where he can see the southern wall and confirm the size of the room, before turning back west. He'll swim that all the way to the western wall and then go north back into the tunnel and then north at the "T" intersection.

When Emm sees Bog look to the bottomless depths, then to her, her eyes widen and she slowly, purposefully shakes her head, with the clear message even a Druid is not welcome there.

Explorations in the eastern end of the southern grotto...

#48 Post by Argennian »

~ The underwater explorers forgo swimming downward into the inky depths below them at the eastern side of the grotto and opt to make a wide clockwise circle and eventually return to the northwestern passage they entered by...

Bog and Emm share nods and the wordless agreement that neither of them wants to explore any deeper. The big fighter leads the young druid southward along the eastern wall of the grotto. The terrain stays much the same, save for a few clumps of beautiful, sparkly gypsum flowers that are pink and violet in color on the eastern wall and ceiling above them. The coating of the walls and formations ahead appear to sparkle a bit more than the other areas that they already covered.

After about 100 feet or so, the deeper section of the grotto ends and is replaced by the normal cavern floor in what looks to be about 60 foot deep water. Ahead is more of the usual columns, more intermittent, connecting draperies, stalagmites and stalactites. As they are just about to enter the maze again, Bogdan catches a flash of silvery-white movement up ahead within the maze of natural formations...

In southern grotto: a strange underwater denizen approaches.

#51 Post by Argennian »

~ Bogdan continues to swim further south into the maze of columns, tall stalagmites and tips of stalactites hanging down below the surface of the water, keeping a careful eye out for what caused the flash of movement he just noticed. Emm follows, hanging back and to the right, her spear at the ready.

The duo swim over and around a few of the stone draperies and columns there. Just as they round a large column and can see the far southern wall of the grotto cavern dead ahead, the head of what appears to be a creature part eel and part earthworm emerges from around a drapery about 20-25 feet below them. It's about a foot in diameter with silvery-white skin that sparkles in the light of the coin. It has no discernible eyes and what looks to be a sucker for a mouth on the bottom of it. The creature stops its casual, forward movement and lifts it's head in their direction, swaying it slowly from side to side, almost as if smelling for whatever it is that has invaded its usually unoccupied domain.

Emm keeps moving, tho pointing her spear downward toward the apparently blind water-wyrm. If it appears to move to attack, or even get too close out of some non-sentient curiosity, she will try to drive it back with a jab.

Bog likewise keeps moving, eager to explore more than to do battle underwater with creatures that are used to fighting in water... But he keeps an eye on the creature, as well, and if it swims at them in a charge-like speed, he will attempt to set his spear against the nearest stalagmite/stalactite.

IUG(SG): Encounter #11 the silvery-white eel-worm attacks!

#54 Post by Argennian »

~ Bogdan and Emm take note of the alien-looking creature that appeared below them and decide to continue swimming on. They begin to make their way towards the southern wall of the grotto as before. Looking back at the silvery-white eel-worm, they can see it seems curious about them and begins to follow. It stays around the same depth as before and hangs back about 30-35 feet. Its movement is slow and steady with an almost lethargic manner.

Continuing their clockwise reconnoiter of the southern grotto, the island explorer duo reach the southern wall and turn west. There is nothing new of note that they can see amongst the formations, other than what's following them. They eventually emerge from the maze of columns, intersecting draperies, stalagmites and low-hanging stalactites and begin to head west again. When they are both clear of the maze by about 20-25 feet, the strange beast suddenly shakes its head and accelerates towards the druidess!

Emm jabs at the albino eel-worm with her spear...

Emm: To Hit, Spear [1d20] = 18, Damage vs large creatures [1d8] = 2

... and catches the sparkly grotto menace on the right flank just behind its head as it latches onto her right leg just above the ankle! (2dam). Although only about a foot in diameter, the creature's body is at least long enough to not be completely exposed from the underwater maze just behind them.

Bog likewise aims for a spot just behind the head of the silvery eel...

To Hit, Spear (melee) [1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13 (THAC018)
Damage, Spear (S/M) [1d6+5] = 2+5 = 7
Damage, Spear (L) [1d8+5] = 2+5 = 7
(Didn't know if that hit and, if so, if the creature was medium or large... guess it doesn't matter.)

Initiative for Round 2:
Initiative [1d6] = 1

Well, hopefully that first attack hits, because...

To Hit, Spear (melee) [1d20+2] = 11+2 = 13
Damage, Spear (S/M) [1d6+5] = 2+5 = 7
Damage, Spear (L) [1d8+5] = 2+5 = 7

??? What are the odds ???

IUG(SG): Encounter #11 the eel-worm attacks, Rds 1 & 2

#56 Post by Argennian »

Encounter with the silvery-white Eel-Worm: Rounds 1 & 2 (TOD: 0822hrs)

Round 1
After the silvery-white eel-worm accelerates to and grabs a hold of the Emm's ankle, and she stabs it with her spear, Bogdan follows suit and jabs at the underwater menace with his Karagonian masterwork spear. The big fighter's thrust just catches the southern grotto denizen and delivers a solid hit (7dam) on its left flank a few feet behind it's eyeless head. The creature flinches from the blow but maintains it's biting hold on the druidess...

Initiative: Round 2
Party: 1
Eel-worm: 4

~ Although now wounded twice, the strange subsurface creature remains undeterred. It sinks the teeth inside its sucker mouth down harder on the druid's ankle (5dam) with a quick shake of its head...

Emm: Saving throw vs paralyzation/poison (need a 10 or better) [1d20] = 20

... although her leg momentarily goes stiff and she can feel a white-hot burning from the creature's deeper bite, the druidess fights off the thankfully minimal effects of what must have been some kind of venom that it failed to deliver. The eel-worm maintains its sucker-mouth hold and begins to pull Emm back towards the maze of columns!

The druidess kicks out with her free foot and stabs down again desperately towards the underwater creature with her spear, hoping it will let her go...

Emm: To Hit, Spear [1d20] = 5 (miss), Damage vs large creatures [1d8] = 3

... but her previous good aim is thrown off by it suddenly pulling her back and she misses.

Bogdan swims quickly back eastward to reposition himself for another shot and stabs out again at the eel-worm with his spear. Thankfully, his aim remains true and he again delivers another deep wound to the underwater menace (7dam).

Actions!

******************************************

*** Need a d6 initiative and attack roll for Bog for Round 3! ***

Time Spent Underwater: (in the caverns, grottoes & passages)
Bog: 22 rounds
Emm: 22 rounds

Water Breathing spell: duration: 3 hours (18 turns; 6 turns/level) Emm: 2 hours 38 minutes left
Potion of Water Breathing: 1 hour (6 turns) + 1-10 minutes (DM's roll) Bog: 38 minutes + 1-10 minutes left

Creature/opponent casualties:
- Strange silvery-white eel-worm (large creature): taken 16 points weapon damage (14 from Bog; 2 from Emm)

Party casualties:
- Emm: taken 7 points damage (from 2 eel-worm bites)

OOC: the eel-worm has now pulled Emm back @ 10'-12' closer to the maze of underwater columns, so she's now @ 12-15' further eastward than she was previously.

IUG(SG): end Encounter #11 Bog & Emm escape the eel-worm!

#58 Post by Argennian »

Encounter with the silvery-white Eel-Worm: Round 3 (TOD: 0823hrs)

Initiative:
Party: 4
Eel-worm: 2

~ The two young and inexperienced yet tough and resilient island explorers react and regroup quickly to the sudden subsurface melee attack that was brought upon them by the alien-looking beast...

Bogdan continues swimming back eastward to remain in range and engaged with the retreating underwater monstrosity that has his druidic companion in its sucker-mouth clutches. The big fighter grits his half-orc teeth and stabs out again with his masterwork spear, but this time its razor-sharp head misses high.

Not wishing to be pulled back to Dagda & Silvanus knows where, let alone remain clamped onto against her will, Emm swallows the massive lump of fear and dread in her throat and steadies herself for a brief moment before jabbing downward again with her spear...

Emm: To Hit, Spear [1d20] = 17 (hits AC3), Damage vs large creatures [1d8] = 3

... this time she succeeds in a well-placed shot right to the eyeless face of the silvery-white menace! Whether or not the strange beast is injured to a point where it cannot keep hold or is merely dissuaded from trying to make the young human woman its next meal or play thing, it lets go of her ankle with an audible pop! and makes to retreat back to the safety of its hard-mineral underwater fortress of colums, draperies, stalagmites and low-hanging stalactites. Bogdan takes the attack of opportunity and thrusts one final parting stab at the fleeing menace that just barely misses.

Within a few more moments, the eyeless, albino-looking, sparkly silver-white eel-worm is gone and out of sight, and the two adventurers are left to once again tread water by themselves in the southern grotto. Blood flows in an underwater mushroom cloud from the unique-looking bite marks on the druid's ankle and Emm gives Bog a look of concern that he realizes to mean she needs to get the wound addressed.

Creature/opponent casualties:
- Strange silvery-white eel-worm (large creature): taken 19 points weapon damage (14 from Bog; 5 from Emm)

Party casualties:

Bog grabs Emm and pulls her ahead of him, gesturing towards the entrance to the grotto.

With the young Druid so injured, Bog decides the exploration trip is over. Time to head back to the others and gather up the coin at the entrance.

He directs her back to the entrance, using his spear to make sure and direct her to the entrance.

Fear and pain create an adrenaline surge in the young Priestess, tho she knows it will not last. She follows Bog's silent directive and hurls every ounce of available energy into propelling herself thru the murk.
