Bogdan removes the second large claw from the nearest crab and then removes both large claws from the other crab as well and lashes them all together into a bundle he can carry over his shoulder on their way back to the campsite.

Emm notes the Half-Orc's injuries, yet says nothing if he does not. She understands Bog's goal-oriented; the goal now being returning to base camp. Once there she will use her final cure blessing for the day.

EST: Giant crab... It's what's for dinner!

#303 Post by Argennian »

~ The southern trail strike team quickly end the impromptu skirmish. Giant crab's back on the island menu...

Impervious to the entangling effects of the druid-magickated northern treeline due his magical ring, Bogdan steps in and applies his masterwork longsword to remove the dead giant crab's (#1) other massive claw. He does so easily and cleanly, setting it down in the sand next to the one he lopped off previous. Emm notices the big fighter's wounds as she regrips her spear and composes herself but says nothing at that moment. Cutler wipes his dual daggers of death clean and returns them to their respective sheaths before heading back to the litter and other team members waiting within the eastern treeline. Caelvanna remains standing steadfast with bow and arrow to hand and readied as she scans the perimeter of the lagoon for any other island wildlife or potential dangers...

Inside the cover of the eastern treeline, Lauranna remains crouched and on the lookout for the missing wand-wielder or any other potential threats from the party's backside (east). Wily continues to hang out of her large belt pouch and sniff the air vigorously for any olfactory clues...

Just to the right of the occupied elf maiden is Ulrich and his now-awake hatchling cargo. The cleric appears lost in thought as he closely scrutinizes the tiny little lizard turtle he named Pickles. It squirms clumsily in his chain-armored hands and makes a raspy squeak as it looks up at him. If he didn't know better, it seems to want or perhaps be waiting for something. The giant baby owlet also eyes the hatchling from its low branch lookout nearby and Ulrich can tell by the look on it's predatory avian visage that it must be hungry too!

Finished with his culinary exploits and cutlery display at the still-magically writhing northern treeline, Bog then moves down to the other giant crab (#2) lying motionless and most likely dead in the water of the small lagoon, and still faerie-fired by the druid's magics. The big swordsman begins lining up one of it's massive pincers for immediate dissection when there's a sudden ripple on the surface and movement underwater...

Emm tries to comfort the young owl, tho she can no longer communicate with it, and wonders also how Ulrich fares with his own newly-hatched charge. Still she monitors Bogs injuries and marvels at his stamina, as the Half-Orc collects the monstrous claws... Then the ripples begin.

Surprise roll
Party: 6

~ When a ripple on the surface is suddenly generated by movement underwater, Bogdan sees it right away...

A long and fairly large, brownish-colored tentacle suddenly breeches the surface of the lagoon behind the faerie-fired body of the giant crab, and reaches out to ensnare it! It's nowhere near the size of the one that encircled the Seahawk during her journey to the islands mind you, but certainly big enough to cause a man-sized creature concern. Even a very big man like the Half-orc fighter. Anyways and apparently, the druid's targeting spell has attracted more than just missile fire from the hungry southern trail strike team!

Bog is standing right in front of the dead giant crustacean, opposite the impromptu tentacle competition, with his masterwork longsword to hand. Caelvanna sees it as well and calls out a warning as she brings her bow up and prepares to provide missile-fire support.
"Look out, Bog!"

Initiative [1d6] = 1

:-\

Bog attempts to leap out of the way of the tentacle, using his ring of free action to move unimpeded, letting it take the giant crab body if it wants. He doesn't want to fight this creature if he doesn't have to.

Emm starts when she sees the tentacle emerge from the sea. Of a sudden she recalls the tale told by the Great Owl of the octopod creature living in a sunken ship mired in a lagoon... Leave it be, for now! She shouts even as Bog backs away, We have what we need, and our priority is the return. The Druid doesn't want to say much more aloud for fear of possible following ears, and casts her gaze toward the back trail.

Encounter 21: The Hungry Tentacle! (TOD: 0804hrs)

Initiative:
Party: 1
Tentacle: 2

~ The large, brownish-colored tentacle wraps itself completely around the dead giant crustacean and pulls taut. The suckers lock on and the entire still faerie-fired body gets pulled backward into the water of the lagoon in a massive, hungry yank! Caelvanna, who'd been prepared to start shooting, holds her fire but remains drawn and ready, just in case...

Emm yells out to Bogdan to leave it be, citing the party's urgent need to return to the ship without further delay as Cutler bursts from the brush with daggers already to hand and ready for immediate deployment against whatever it is this time. Seeing the tentacle appears interested in just a glowing giant crab breakfast and not him, the big fighter's already on board, and simply steps back in the shallow water to watch one half of the party's recently replenished seafood menu get claimed by something bigger!

But instead of disappearing into a sea monster's maw, the seafood breakfast seems to get stuck about 10-12 feet down below the surface, right on the very bottom. A few segments later, the tentacle encircles it and pulls again, this time much more violently. The glowing body of the massive crustacean gets pulled down forcibly through what appears to be a roughly oval-shaped breach in the watery bottom of the lagoon, breaking off two of its legs and one of its claws that got hung up in the process, as well as all the arrows and quarrels that were sticking out of it. Bog then watches the still druid-lightened husk disappear into darkness*. The two faerie-fired legs and one giant pincer remain stuck and tauntingly apparent at the edges of the underwater hole...

Back inside the eastern treeline, Lauranna and Wily remain vigilant in their watching and guarding the party's back trail. The High elf's little weasel familiar's nose is working overtime but so far no Karagonian blips on its olfactory radar. Emm has a look that way as well as she reenters the brush, thinking again about their disappeared magely adversary and how much she yearns to meet him again whilst she works her way back over to the giant baby owlet. The youngling island avian flaps its wings and lets forth a nervous Hoot! Ulrich remains quiet and does not speak or move, still apparently entranced by his tiny hatchling cargo. Pickles continues to look back up at him longingly and squeak hungrily.

Over at the northern treeline, the druid's entangle spell has run its course and the flora there stops writhing and holding onto the body of the dead and now clawless giant crab #1...

OOC: okay then, the giant hungry tentacle makes off with most of giant crab #2, save the torn off bits still magically-glowing at the bottom of the lagoon.

POP: one full turn has transpired so the entangle spell has run its course and dissipated; the faerie fire spell is still going for another few rounds.

Bog sighs in relief as he returns to the others, "That was unexpected. We might steer clear of swimming in this lagoon in the future. That thing has a tunnel out there, running north/south. Let's head back to camp."

He stumbles a little as he tries to grab the crab claw.

"Or maybe after a little rest," he adds, seeming to notice his wounds are worse than he'd thought.

Sitting the young owl down a moment, Emm comes to the conclusion that healing Bog's injuries may well be the safest course for the entire party. She reaches for the husky Half-Orc and utters the prayer...

Cure Light Wounds: [1d8] = 8

...And smiles briefly in satisfaction, before retrieving her charge and her gear.

Bog looks almost amazed as many of his smaller wounds suddenly heal and his aches disappear.

"Thanks, Emm. Guess I didn't realize how hurt I was..."

He still isn't 100%, but he's never going to complain about that sort of thing. He figures he can get more healing tea back at camp.

Strapping all of his weapons tight to his pack and sheathing his Karagonian sword, he hefts the remaining crab claw and begins heading in the direction of camp once everyone else indicates they are ready.

EST: The party regroups & preps to return to the ship

#316 Post by Argennian »

~ The big fighter watches half the party's giant crustacean meal disappear before moving back to the others at the eastern treeline. Held breaths are let go and the party stands down from DefCon1 again...

Bog advises his escapee mates of what he saw, detailing there appears to be a underwater tunnel running north to south below the lagoon. Along with the brief AAR, the bloodied, crab meat-n-shell covered fighter proffers a recommendation the lagoon be off limits for swimming from here on out, and that the party head back to camp before something else happens.

Her trusty bow and a readied flight arrow still to hand, Caelvanna nods her understanding before stepping to her left (south) to get out of the way and better cover the empty-for-now lagoon. Cutler offers Bogdan similar acknowledgements as he sheaths his DDDs and heads over to recover his prized throwing dagger from the body of their remaining giant crab meal...

Having gotten the all-clear from the others in the lagoon, the remaining members of the southern trail strike team gather themselves and their respective animal companions and cargoes. Lauranna acknowledges her mates but remains on high alert with Wily, combining their concentrations on the party's back trail to make sure their presence remains wand-wielding Karagonian mage-free. Ulrich continues to be perplexed about what he should do with l'il Pickles, or rather what he should feed it. The part-lizard, part-turtle hatchling continues to look up at him with tiny little black eyes and sing it's hungry squeaking melody.

Emm emerges from the eastern treeline with the anxious giant owlet on her leather-armored forearm and follows Bog as he moves over to secure the two giant crab claws they still have. When the Half-orc stumbles a bit in the process, the druidess is prompted to use another of her remaining spells. She sets her avian charge on a sturdy branch and steps over to cast her last cure light wounds. The divine magic slams into Bogdan hard (+8hp!), reversing a good part of the damage he's suffered on the mission. Feeling much revitalized, the big swordsman stretches and flexes his massive muscles while looking himself over. With a genuine, tusky smile, he thanks Emm for her magical benevolence. The reputed island queen allows a small smile of satisfaction to escape her tired visage before turning to collect the overgrown owlet and rest of her gear.

~ With their latest impromptu island encounter now below and behind them, the party regroups and prepares to delta back to the ship. Hazara is already climbing a colorful eastern sky and the westerly morning breeze begins to pick up a bit. The island's insect and small avian denizens are now beginning to get active too. Cutler finishes retrieving his coveted magical throwing dagger and works with Bog to try and get the two giant crab claws secured to their makeshift stretcher. Unfortunately, the two bodies, armor, weapons, gear and massive island cave loot are all it can barely handle, so the big fighter has to drape them around his armored neck.

When everyone else indicates their readiness to go, the cook and swordsman lift their extremely heavy and most valuable cargo and move out after Caelvanna. Emm and Ulrich fall in next with their respective animal cargoes whilst Lauranna remains at rear guard with weasel-powered radar to make sure they aren't being followed by you know who...

Once past the lagoon, the party crosses the small stream and approaches the hidden cove on the game trail. When just within earshot of the cove, everyone stops and crouches down like before. Cutler makes the special bird-call like whistle. There is no response. He makes it again, slightly louder. Still no response. He immediately looks concerned. After another handful of segments, he does so a third time. There's a long pause but this time it's finally returned from somewhere up ahead, just like before. This time, however, it's much more faint and a different tone.

This screws instant alarm and dread upon Cutler's bloodied visage. He looks around to each party member and uses the hand signals everyone trained on to indicate danger is present. He then signals everyone to move into the brush on the western side of the trail and huddle up. Once regrouped, the grizzled cook signals for quiet. He and the others listen for a handful of segments before he leans down and whispers very quietly.

"... that call means the Seahawk is on Sierra Hotel Alpha status... could only mean an enemy or danger nearby... if there be enemies nearby, we cannot be seen walking into the cove and vanishing into thin air...
"... way I see it, we got two choices, friends: stay put and wait for the all clear signal, or,"
he looks around again to everyone, "we spread out and try to identify the threat. No matter what, we must not expose the ship and the others. If we have to lure..."

The cook's whispered speech is interrupted by a splashing sound west of the party's position, followed by someone hissing for quiet. Both the giant baby owl and Wily turn their heads in that direction as well but it's impossible to see anything through the thick floral brush and canopy. When the mage's familiar begins sniffing the morning air for scent, Caelvanna slinks away and back along the trail to go get a look for herself. Cutler looks like he wants to stop her at first, but decides not to. Instead, he arms himself with a heavy crossbow and begins loading it. He loads three others before the stealthy Wild-elf returns to the party to report.

"Beat up longboat with six men inside; rowing east around the island, about hundred feet off shore, but inside the reef. They look armed to the teeth and ready for trouble, but definitely not military. In fact, they might not even be Karagonian. There's at least two southerners and an easterner among them..."

"Pirates!" Cutler exalts in a anxious whisper. "They must have rowed past the cove from the other side of the island, or we'd have seen 'em from above before we descended that bluff. I wonder if their ship is anchored on the north side of the island or if they rowed here from another one of the isles?"

"Regardless," the Wild-elf archer interjects, "unless they put to shore in the lagoon or not far thereafter, they're going to spot that Karagonian Navy longboat we left in that cove..."

"Good point," the cook admits. "Curious what their reaction would be. Unless there are more of them near the ship or on the island itself, mayhap now we'd be able to get back to the Seahawk. I'll signal them again to see if it's clear..."

Cutler stands up and looks around. After listening for a handful of seconds, he makes the bird whistle signal in the direction of the cove. The normal call responds through the cool morning breeze so he signals the all clear. He and Bogdan grab up the stretcher and the southern trail strike team prepare to make their way out of the treeline, across the short distance of dirt and sand to disappear into thin air....

EST: The party heads east to the watch blind...

#317 Post by Argennian »

~ The newly-leveled southern trail strike team and island expeditionary force make their way along the well-worn game path. The light of dawn is finally finding purchase but the going is tough and slow, especially through the thicker flora and much muddier, waterlogged sandy soil resulting from the deluge of unrelenting rain. The trail follows somewhat parallel along the base of the cliff, roughly 45-50 feet away to the left, and rises ever so slightly as it progresses through the island canopy. Branches and leaves, both big and small, hang in the way across the trail but offer no other seemingly malevolent intentions to forward progress.

After a few hundred feet, the smothering floral canopy breaks open and reveals a small stream flowing from left to right. There's a tiny pool around twenty feet off to the left, roughly 8 feet in diameter and maybe a few feet deep at the center. This time there are no birds or bugs flying about, buzzing and chirping, nor any other animals visible. The only sound is the blustery wind and pouring rain...

The path again enters the thick brush, this time turning more eastward than southeast and descending slightly. After about another 120 yards, the chocking underbrush and bushes break out into a lagoon and open area, at least 150 yards long (west to east) by at least 80 yards wide (north to south). The game trail appears to split here and continues on on either side of the lagoon. Straight ahead to the right is the first small beach, which extends about 25 yards along the southern edge of the lagoon. At the far end of the lagoon is the other beach, which is much larger and looks to encompass the entire eastern side. That is also where the salt water lagoon is fed by the sea, from the south via a small inlet. Looking through the trees to the right, it appears the southern shore of the island is @ 35-40 yards away. This time, there are no gargantuan crabs nor hungry giant monitor lizards present to cause delay.

Bogdan stays to the left side of the lagoon and moves forward in a measured stride. The other team members follow and collectively make it to the treeline at the eastern side. The big fighter makes sure everyone is there and gets ready-nods before proceeding to follow another game trail further eastward. The light is continually getting brighter by the minute, irregardless of the stormy, drenching conditions, and the well-worn path makes it's way into an area of larger trees that rises in elevation. Those party members that have been this way before recognize places where that giant monitor lizard fled wounded and knocked down some smaller trees and trampled the underbrush during it's escape...

The underbrush soon thins out under the more impressive canopy some 30-35 feet above, and the team proceeds further east with more ease as they enjoy a break from the heavy downpour. The ground continues to climb and becomes less sandy, which makes it muddier and more slippery, so progress is again slowed. The trees continue to get larger and the floral ceiling rises over 40 feet in many spots. After another 100 yards or so, the party arrives at the area where the crew felled a couple of large trees for ship repairs the week previous. Bogdan takes the offshoot trail to the right (south) towards the shoreline and signals the others follow.

The relief column make their way in a mostly southern direction, dropping in elevation as they approach the coastline. They have to slow their progress here and there, to pass through a few thick clumps of underbrush and avoid slipping to go for a muddy slide in the runoff, but eventually arrive at the intersection to another larger and more well-traveled game trail that goes left and right (east & west).

Bog halts just above this trail for a time to look and listen around for any potential danger, as he noticed Cutler do previous. The Half-orc swashbuckler sees and hears nothing but the continuous sheets of pounding rain and howling winds, so signals all clear to the others. He steps down onto the trail, signals and turns left (east). The team follows, weapons ready, senses peaked and scanning for trouble as they pull their waterproof cloaks, jackets and parkas tight.

The trail starts to descend again and it's another hazardous go. Everyone eventually makes it safely to level ground and although getting wetter and muddier by the step, can move forward again at better pace. As the party begins approaching the cove up ahead where the Karagonian navy longboat resides, there are two consecutive booms! in the not-too-far distance. They sound like short bouts thunder from the storm up ahead, but of important if not troubling note, is that there was no flash of lightning proceeding them...
