Ulrich whips out his trusty mace, shouting for help from Sorel as he attempts to smash the offending vine.

Sorel! Help!

To hit with mace [1d20] = 6

OOC: I won't bother with a damage roll

The Assassin Vine strikes! (TOD:1034hrs)

Round 1

~ The giant, bulging, funny-looking vine that Bogdan is traversing suddenly comes to life like some kind of druidic nightmare, and tries to wrap itself around him in a multi-tentacled plant-bear hug of unknown intentions...

While holding on tight with one still liquid-soaked, burning hand, the big fighter decides to rebuff the flora's attempts of encompassing affection and draws his trusty masterwork longsword with the other, prepared to give the vivacious plant the same thing he did the wild boar, and pretty much everything else he's come up against on the island. His usual, well-practiced aim and following attack is rendered ineffective, however, likely due the most unusual circumstances and nature of his positioning and predicament. The warm liquid continues to burn both his hands and Bog can start to feel his fingers are going numb...

Back down in the clearing below, Ulrich is thankfully paying close attention, and immediately sees the strange vine animate and try to entangle his fellow northern trail scout. The cleric instantly springs to action, being wise enough to first call out to Sorel, whose back was turned covering the trail and thus completely unaware, before lifting his mace, stepping forward and swinging it up at the outer vines of the massive floral creature near the beginning of the stair. His first strike ends up falling short of his intended martial ambitions and the dwarf bashes nothing but normal plant matter and hard stone cliff side.

Sorel spins around at Ulrich's call, and his Half-elf easterner eyes go wide in shocked disbelief at the incredulous scene unfolding before him. Usually never last to react, he's caught by surprise and seems to be stuck in animated disbelief as he tries to comprehend what's happening and decide his next move...

*** Need a d6 initiative roll for the party for Round 2, as well as Declared Actions and any attack rolls, if making them! ***

*** Also need a d20 saving throw for Bogdan, for half-damage vs the volatile plant liquid still burning his hands! ***

Damage taken by party:
- Bogdan: 3 points burn damage (from volatile plant liquid)

Damage taken by opponents:
- none

OOC: aright then guys, even though that was technically the surprise round, we'll call that Round 1 and consider the upcoming as Round 2. Since Bog was not able to get his two attacks/round in, he can now do so in Round 2, if he still wishes to try and hack the plant instead of escaping it!

If you have any questions, or need some additional clarification, please let me know!

Initiative [1d6] = 6

Bog hacks at the strangle vine again, but still doesn't have his bearings. Finally, his feet find solid footings and he is able to brace himself properly for a second swing...

Ooc: first attack roll was a 5; not worth linking. But I'll take the second one...

To Hit, Longsword [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23
Damage, Longsword (L) [1d12+6] = 6+6 = 12

Ulrich takes another swing at the vine with his mace.

To hit with mace [1d20] = 11

OOC: Doubt that's a hit, but just in case: Damage with mace [1d4+1] = 2+1 = 3

Encounter with the Assassin Vine: Round 2 (TOD:1035hrs)

Initiative
Party: 6
Killer Vine: 1

~ The party reacts to the unlikely attack with a desperate quickness...

With both his hands still burning (6dam; saved for half) and now quickly going completely numb, Bogdan strikes out again desperately with his beloved Karagonian blade. The specialist swordsman's first strike is again rendered ineffective by the barely-hanging-on awkwardness of his incredulous situation...

Down below in the clearing, Ulrich winds up and swings his mace at the unlikely floral predator again. This time, the cleric's aim is just good enough to catch the clinging outer appendages of the plant creature and he bashes it for a moderate blow (3dam). The struck appendage lets go of the cliff side and recoils from the hit.

Recovering from his stunned surprise, Sorel drops his coveted bow and draws his short sword. The Half-elf easterner circles Ulrich to the westernmost edge of the small clearing and takes a massive, adrenaline-fueled chop at the offending plant predator. Although shocked to action and less calculated in his attack than he ordinarily would be, his strike is perfectly placed and cleaves off an entire section of a lower appendage! (nat20;16dam) The dismembered piece of plant lands at his and Ulrich's feet, writhing in a twitchy death-throw.

Up above and still clinging onto his wet, floral handhold, Bogdan can feel the massive vine shudder from the blows that were delivered by his fellow northern trail scouts. He recovers from his previously-ineffective attack and kicks his armored legs free push off and line up for his next strike. Instead of trying to hack down on the deadly plant menace, however, he thrusts the masterwork Karagonian weapon straight into the bulky part at it's center and sinks it to the hilt in a massive spray of yellowish ichor! (nat20; 54dam!)

The critical blow delivered by the big fighter is all the attacking vine can sustain. It lets go of it's armored quarry, mortally wounded and unable to continue it's assault, let alone it's previously-prolific floral life. It's vine appendages sag and stop moving...

*** Still need a d20 saving throw vs poison for Bogdan (for half-damage vs the volatile plant liquid still burning his hands), and now also a d20 saving throw vs petrification for numb hands trying to maintain their grip! ***

Damage taken by party:
- Bogdan: 6 points burn damage (from volatile plant liquid)

Damage taken by opponents:
- Assassin Vine: KIAed with 73 points weapon's damage (from Ulrich, Sorel & Bogdan)

OOC: okay gang! Wow, that was 2 natural 20s for the party! Sorel's critical hit scored a max wepaon damage x2 but Bog's critical was max weapon damage + modifiers x3!! (first time ever rolled as a DM! 8-) )

POP: The killer vine has been slain but Bogdan is still hanging in a precarious situation with the burning liquid on his hands causing them to go numb. The saving throw vs petrification will be to determine if he can maintain his grip for the next round! :geek:

Exploring the northern trail: OOC for Ulrich

#90 Post by Argennian »

SocraticLawyer wrote:OOC: Is Ulrich in a position where he can reach out for Bogdan or otherwise try to help him out of his precarious situation?
OOC: Not really. At present, he'd have to climb up the @ 15' or so of the obstructed stair, slowly like Bog did, which would take him @ 2 rounds to do so. That or Bog would have to climb down to him.

Of course, considering those latest saving throw rolls, that issue may be mute...

ENT: The party wins the plant battle, but...

#91 Post by Argennian »

~ With their unlikely and alien floral foe slain, the party attempts to regroup. Ulrich and Sorel look to try and find a way up to help Bogdan out of his barely-hanging-on and now yellowish, gore-splattered situation. Sorel quickly sheaths his blade and calls up to him in concern. "Are you okay, Bogdan? Did it injure you?"

A grimace of ongoing pain and strain is evident on the big fighter's visage as he clings onto the now-dead vine with one burning hand and the hilt of his gore-covered sword with the other. The plant liquid continues to burn his hands (6dam; failed save) and makes them so numb he can barely hold on. When he tries to reposition himself, the armored Half-orc's gauntlets lose grip and he falls from the side of the cliff side, landing in the thicket and bramble below* with a mighty crash (4dam) and echo of breaking branches and brush!

Actions?

Questions?

********************************************

* ~ PM going out to Al! :P

Damage taken by party:
- Bogdan: 16 points damage (12 from burning plant goo; 4 from falling)

Damage taken by opponents:
- Assassin Vine: KIAed with 73 points weapon's damage (from Ulrich, Sorel & Bogdan)

OOC: we'll consider that the first half of the round, and that Ulrich was holding his action as he assessed the situation. That means he could begin to move or commit to an action before the end of the round.

~ Where Bog fell into the thicket and bramble is very thick and choking. It would take between 2-3 rounds for someone to hack through it to him. Sorel and Ulrich could team up on that and make it in 2 rounds for sure.

POP: since Bog has not called out IC that his hands are burning, Ulrich & Sorel have no way of knowing that he's hurt or is continuing to take damage! :geek:

"It burns!" Bog calls out after he catches his breath from falling. He tries wiping it off on the ground, the foliage, anything nearby.

ENT: Ulrich & Sorel rally to Bog's aid...

#94 Post by Argennian »

~ Once able to catch his breath from the fall, Bogdan responds to Sorel's query, explaining that he's hurt and apparently continuing to be so due an ongoing burning condition from his contact with the killer vine. He also details that he needs something washed off his person by any means necessary while he struggles to try and get his gauntlets off. Finding his hands and fingers now completely numb and unable to function, the big fighter uses his knees to pinch and hold the gauntlets in place as he tries to pull his hands free...

Ulrich rallies Sorel to action and they begin beating, cutting, clearing, ripping, pushing and pulling their way through the thick, obstructive flora. The sticker bushes, brush and thicket here seems unusually prolific and resilient but the dwarf and Half-elf easterner are undeterred and absolutely determined to reach their companion in need as quickly as they can.

It takes the better part of two minutes before the dwarf and elf duo reach the plant gore-covered swordsman. When they do, they can see that his now-exposed hands are bloated and blistered terribly, as if they'd been boiling in a pot of water. They can also smell them burning and can see by the look on the Half-orc's visage that he's in bad shape.

Ulrich pulls his waterskin, as does Sorel, and they begin washing off Bog's misshapen hands. The cool water does in fact stop the ongoing burning and relieves most of the pain once the sticky, transparent goo is washed off of them, but they are still horridly swollen and blistered from the unlikely experience. It becomes immediately obvious to the cleric that he needs divine healing if he's to be able to use his hands again...

Sorel grabs a piece of cloth from his pack and begins washing off Bogdan's gauntlets. As he's doing so he suddenly stops and issues an exaltation. "By the gods, look! They're everywhere!"

Bogdan and Ulrich glance over at him and then down to what he's looking at, and realize they're in the midst of a massive pile of bones! Most appear to be animal in nature but they do spot at least one human skull and what looks to be something shiny closer to the base of the cliff side...

Damage taken by party:
- Bogdan: 22 points damage (18 from burning plant goo; 4 from falling)

Damage taken by opponents:
- Assassin Vine: KIAed with 73 points weapon's damage (from Ulrich, Sorel & Bogdan)

OOC: The plant acid on Bog's hands is now considered washed off and he's no longer taking any further damage, but they're both badly burned and swollen with blisters. Ulrich can tell that he will need to be healed if he's to have any chance of getting his gauntlets back on, let alone using them to hold onto anything.

Ulrich casts CLW on Bog, specifically his burned up hands:

Cure light wounds [1d8] = 5

OOC: is that enough to get Bog's digits functional again? If not, I'll use another one.

Looking around, Ulrich says, "What is this place?"

ENT: Bog gets further healing...

#97 Post by Argennian »

~ Seeing that Bogdan's hands will be useless to him without further attention of the divine kind, Ulrich casts a cure light wounds spell on him (+5hp). The dwarf's healing magic works well to bring down the swelling and Bog finds that he can move his fingers again. They are still somewhat discolored and puffy but no longer unusable.

Sorel finishes washing off his gauntlets and wipes them down carefully to be sure they are free of the killer plant's acidic excrement. He hands them over along with one of his two home-brew elixirs and bids the fighter use it to regain his obviously still-depleted vitality. Bog takes the elixir and pounds it forthwith (+8hp). Within a minute, the powerful shot of Shanny's home-brew healing potion causes the discoloration to go away and the big Half-orc looks and feels much better...

Bog nods an appreciative thanks to Sorel and Ulrich for the healing and puts his gloves back on and straightens out his gear.

Once he is done, he turns his attention to the bottom of the cliff. "Now, about those bones..."

He begins rummaging through the remains of the plant's victims, looking for anything of value.

ENT: Bog begins searching through the bones...

#99 Post by Argennian »

~ With the intense, burning pain vanquished and horrible swelling finally receded, Bogdan has the use of his hands once again. He looks to Ulrich and Sorel, and nods his sincere appreciations for their timely aid. Thinking of what would've happened had they not been there is a consideration he does not wish to entertain...

The big fighter reequips his gauntlets, now clean and free of the plant's acid, and gets to his feet. He checks and readjusts his armor, weapons and gear from the fall and suddenly realizes he doesn't have his longsword. After quickly scanning the nearby debris pile, he looks up and sees his favorite masterwork weapon remains buried to the hilt in the body of the killer vine still clinging to the cliff side. The Half-orc realizes he'll have to climb back up to get it, but that it's certainly not going anywhere for the time being. That being the case, he begins assessing the massive pile of bones they're all standing in.

~ With a curiosity articulated for what the shiny bits are, and what else may be hidden within the huge pile of hardened remains, Bog begins rummaging through them. Sorel and Ulrich look on and around for any further danger as he does so, not wanting to be caught off guard lest the killer cliff vine have any homicidal floral kin nearby. Other than the chirping of birds and the buzzing of the island's many insects, all seems calm and quiet.

It takes the better part of 10 minutes to search through most of the immense amount of animal bones present due the thick, choking undergrowth, but Bogdan eventually uncovers the remains of three humans or humanoids. One is the size of a normal human, one the size of a small human with a funny-shaped skull and sharpened teeth, and one that looks to be gnome.

On and about the human-sized bones is a rotted and rusted suit of studded-leather armor, a rusty short sword in bad repair, an axe head with no handle, and a rotted pack containing the remains of what must have been a bunch of canvas sacks or perhaps a folded tarp or blanket.

On the small humanoid-sized remains is a rotted animal-skin loincloth and pair of sandals, as well as a necklace and charm bracelet of strange-looking, tiny animal skulls. Tied to what appears to be a rotted hemp belt nearby is a stoppered earthenware flagon that appears intact, a bone knife and a small pouch that's rotted out with nothing in it.

On the remains of the gnome, however, is a shiny and surprising score. The skeleton's wearing what looks to be a brand new suit of leather armor, a set of exquisite high, soft boots, a silver necklace with 5 ruby-like stones and a plain gold ring. Still attached to the armor are two shiny hand-axes and a jeweled-handled throwing knife that sparkles brilliantly in the sunlight. Next to the remains is a large backpack that's still in decent condition and full of mountaineering, or perhaps dungeoneering gear. Wrapped in a blanket within is a crowbar and small steel pick. There is also a small hammer and a dozen iron spikes, a 100 foot silk rope with what looks to be a retractable steel grapnel, an oiled canvas bag of strange-looking hand tools and chisels, 3 six-foot long chains, 3 fine padlocks with keys, and a set of 12 strange caltrops. At the very bottom of the pack under what looks to be an oiled tarp is a bone scroll case, an oiled pouch with 6 large pearls and what could be small bags spell components and a small iron lockbox, which is locked with no signs of the key anywhere.

OOC: there's still more of the massive pile of bones that could be searched through but the above appears to be the most obvious items. Further scrutinizing will likely require more of clearing of the brush and thicket; TOD updated.
