Caelvanna is quick to retrieve another arrow before realizing her enemies have withdrawn. She returns her arrow to her quiver and immediate thinks to turn her attention to the fallen halfling. She will defer actions to Ulrich and Bog, however, as they arrived before her, but will watch over the proceedings with great interest.

The Seahawk begins to depart the debris field

#143 Post by Argennian »

~ The crew scrambles to recover as their mermen adversaries retreat and the Seahawk begins to make her way through the debris field again...

Up on the foredeck, Caelvanna nocks another arrow and continues looking about to target any remaining threats. With the small torch and another grenade in his hands, but lacking any more acquatic opponents, Gramps looks over and sees that Griffo has fallen. "Man down!" he cries out loudly. Hammal keeps his eyes trained on the water about the bow, another one of the exploding vials in his hand and at the ready to light and throw, if needed.
Seeing that reinforcements have arrived on the main deck and hearing there are more casualties at the bow, Bogdan and Ulrich move up to the aid of their halfling companion. The half-orc fighter and dwarf cleric reach his side as Caelvanna returns her readied arrow to her quiver and looks on with obvious concern. Seeing that Griffo is hurt bad and bleeding out, Ulrich quickly casts another Cure Light Wounds spell. The curative magic courses through the halfling's still form and although he does not regain consciousness, his wounds are closed and he appears to be breathing normally.

On the main deck, Emm scrambles out and away from under her easterner half-elf cover and seeing that Lauranna is still down and out and not moving, moves over and quickly casts her first ever Cure Light Wounds spell. The recently-acquired divine magic flows through the High elf's form and stacks upon the clerical spell that Ulrich just cast. Lauranna's eyes flutter open and begin looking about quickly in confusion as she tries to understand why she's laying on her back and can barely move.
Over at the starboard rail, Sorel moves to assist Arak and Cutler with the main while Mila makes to reload her crossbow as quickly as she can.
Back over at the port side, Jovak remains standing defiantly at the rail, his massive battle-scarred frame looking more like a pin cushion for all the bolts and javelins sticking in him. Not realizing that the battle is over, he points his wand towards where the no longer present mermen were and fires off another charge. The purple-colored cone of fear hits the empty water but finds no targets this time. Tamber moves over and places a hand on the dwarven general's shoulder. "It's over, sir! They're gone!"
Nearby, Billings and Lady Jennynia administer their best efforts to stabilize Troc whilst Najania moves to assess Thalion's condition. Although the Wood elf is still unconscious, his wounds are closed and he appears to be stabilized. Troc's wounds are quickly stabilized but the head sailor looks about ready to step through Death's Door at any moment. Arak and Cutler finishing unraveling the main control lines and the cool sea breeze takes up the slack and snaps the main tight.

Up on the stern castle deck, Bradley drops his missile weapon and with obvious effort pulls himself to his feet and steps over to the wheel. Zimba finishes loading the heavy crossbow that the captain had fired previously and covered in blood from head to toe, struggles to his feet and begins searching for any more threats. Yousef begins to reload his weapon in an effort to join the southerner on watch for any more danger.
Seeing the mermen ambushers retreat, Ziller moves over quickly next to Bradley, his deadly wand still to hand and at the ready, and takes in the scene. He looks about the ship in an effort to take in the crew's current status and disposition.

Up above in the crow's nest, Blic hurries to reload his crossbow and looks down in the water all about the ship. He stops cursing his unusually bad aim in halfling and calls out in common that he sees no more mermen or other contacts. He looks down briefly in horror at his companions, stopping momentarily when sees Lauranna lying there, realizing that she must have fallen from the rope ladder and landed on the deck below.

From the hold below arrives the Lady Tamara and Shanny, the elder half-elf helping the blind witch woman along. They both have what appears to be healing potions to hand. Tamara leads Shanny over to where Billings and Jennynia are stabilizing Troc and Najania is looking after Thalion, hoping to offer their assistance where needed. Gentleman Billy arrives just moments after with a wand in one hand and a potion in the other. He takes in the chaotic scene, looking all about the ship with wide eyes at the scores of mermen javelins and heavy bolts sticking out of the decks, rails, rigging and fellow crew members. His face pale from both fear and physical exertion, he leans back against the wall of the stern castle and waits to see where he can be of use.

~ Seeing that the newly-arrived ship is picking up speed and looking to flee the scene, the old, sunburned man in the longboat cries out and waves feebly. You do not understand his words but recognize them to be the eastern dialect. His eyes are wide with fear as he obviously considers that he's going to be left behind.
Hearing the man's weak, foreign plea, Ziller steps over to the port rail of the stern castle deck and points to the longboat with his free hand. "Get a line on that longboat! I want that man brought aboard! The rest of you grab up any crates that you can before we clear the debris field!"

Seeing that Griffo is stable, Bogdan returns to the grappling hook and rope he initially had and throws a line out to the longboat in an attempt to snag it.

Grapple Throw (w/STR bonus) [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13
(Hits AC6)

Assured that the hook is properly set, he braces his feet against ribbing below the rail and calls out, "Got it." As he strains to keep hold of the rope now attached to the long boat, the pain of his wounds suddenly becomes apparent, "Might need some help pulling it in, though..."

Hmmm... not sure how many more PCs are up and able to make an action!

Finally, success! Emm had begun to think she would never make a proper Priestess to He Who Watches the Forest Passes. That her Elven friend is alive and awake bolsters her faith in herself. Say nothing of it, she whispers to Lauranna. The Life-Debt is repaid, the balance restored. She pushes herself up from the deck and sets her thoughts to the child she sent below, when the sudden, stabbing memory of her own wound halts her. If she waits any longer to treat her own bloodloss, she may not be able to seek out Sam. The little one will just have to wait a few more minutes.

With the injured already being tended to, and those more comfortable aboard a boat than she working to retrieve the longboat, Caelvanna is mindful of her footing as she heads back below deck to replenish her arrows from her stash of supplies.

With a full quiver, she returns to the main deck to lend her assistance if she finds an opportunity, but will attempt to stay clear of the rails and the edge of the ship.

The Seahawk departs the debris field, sailing west

#148 Post by Argennian »

~ The Seahawk's main snaps to and she begins to accelerate through the debris field. The crew continue to tend to their wounded and reload, now also setting to the task of recovering the last survivor, his longboat and as many floating crates and items as they can...

Those reloading weapons do so. Continued measures of healing and stabilization are applied to Lauranna, Griffo, Thalion, Troc and Farlon. The High elf, Wood elf and lead sailor are removed from the main deck to make it clear for pressing business. Emm follows the precession below, accompanied by Caelvanna on a reload run. Ulrich stays with Griffo and Billings moves back up to Farlon's side.
Down on deck, Tamber struggles to make Jovak stand down and get out of the way as Sorel and Mila move to deploy the cargo nets at each side. Once they do so, they each tie a loading rope around their waists and prepare to move down the nets to the waterline. Arak and Cutler take up grappling lines and begin casting at floating crates and cargo that come within range of the port and starboard side respectively. The dwarven general finally moves back out of the way to where the port rail meets the stern castle, but stays at the ready with both his wand and masterwork battle axe. He grits his teeth, taking deep breaths and stares blindly over the water to port. Bogdan moves down, readies a grappling line and gets into position. He'll be able to cast it at the longboat within a matter of moments...
Up on the rear deck, Bradley sets to steering the Seahawk to pass by the old man closely on the right while Zimba and Yousef take up positions to flank and protect him. With their heavy crossbows reloaded and ready to fire, they scan for trouble off and around the stern. Gentlemen Billy moves up to the stern deck and both he and Ziller step over to each rail to cover those on the main with their wands.
Up on the foredeck, Gramps and Hammal move up opposite of the halfling commander and retired master thief to cover those on deck below. They each have small torches and naval grenades to hand and ready for quick deployment.
Blic calls out suddenly from above in the crow's nest. "I can still see some of them out there, cap'n! There's some big fish swimming amongst them, too. They've definitely backed off but are still watching us!"
In the process of carefully dragging the badly-wounded Farlon out the way to the side for some cover, Billings calls back out to halfling lookout. "Keep your eyes sharp, man! You see 'em making a move, any move, you call out!"
"Aye, aye, sir!" he replies from above.

********************************

The weary-looking old easterner is crying and gesturing his thanks as he realizes you are coming for him after all. As soon as the longboat comes into range, Bogdan makes his throw. The grapple lands in the boat and snags up quickly. The burly half-orc fighter sets his foot and braces as the line goes taunt. He announces he's not so consumed with the spotlight as to take sole credit here, so with Arak and Cutler's assistance, they drag the longboat up to the cargo net alongside and tie off. Mila is the first to climb down into the boat. Sorelle throws her another loading line and she ties it about the old man's waist. With cover from above and all around them, she helps to get him to his feet in his weakened state and over to the net. It takes Bog, Arak, Cutler and Sorelle little time to retrieve and get them both back on deck. Along with the survivor, there is a small chest, an unusual-looking sealed vase and some rope that were in the longboat. One medium and one large crate and a couple of hull bumpers are also recovered.

The halfling lookout announces no further movement from the thwarted mermen, agressive or otherwise, and so the Seahawk clears the debris field and begins to sail westward unmolested. When the ship is one hundred yards out and picking up speed, Blic calls out that he can no longer see them about or following from a distance.

While Bog, Hammal and Sorelle begin scrutinizing the acquired items, Arak moves over and takes up the old eastern man, offering him some water and reassuring words in their foreign dialect. Inside the large crate is colorful southern textiles and four bundles of white silk. In the medium-sized one is two large backpacks and a bundle of what could be Stygian Coast high leaf or poppies. The small chest is gilded with silver leafing and strange designs and is a beautiful piece to behold. It has an internal lock and Sorelle urges a very caution inspection before trying to open it. The sealed vase is also an enigma and is placed next to the small silver chest.

The gnomish woman Jennynia, her brother Najania, as well as the lady Tamara, emerge from the hold and move about to assess the shipwreck survivor and other crew members that were wounded. Griffo and Farlon are taken below and Shanny's homemade healing potions are handed out to those that are walking wounded and the other, more seriously-wounded are given stronger curatives. Bogdan, Caelvanna, Emm and also Lauranna each receive one of the earthenware potions and are told to drink it straight away.* Although he was not injured, one is also given to Ulrich when he comes back down to the main deck. He's asked to give it to whomever he thinks needs it the most.

Although the old man doesn't appear to have been in the boat that long, he's seemingly dehydrated and in bad shape. The gnome woman kneels next to him and begins coaxing some of her famous homemade brews down his dry gullet. The man chokes a bit but after given a few moments, looks to somewhat catch his breath. Arak begins questioning him about what happened. The man struggles to speak and his mumblings are barely audible. The first officer leans in close and after a few minutes looks back up to Billings and Ziller standing above. "He's a longtime mate of the southern merchant ship, Jahara. They were bound for Karagonia with goods and went off course to the north trying to sail around that storm we just came through. Sounds like they sailed past the our island chain. Says they spotted what they thought was a pirate ship at the easternmost of the three large islands. They were not yet past the islands two days when they were attacked by the mermen earlier this morning. The ship and most of the crew were lost straight away and sharks must have got the rest. He woke up in the longboat but cannot remember how he got there."

Billings calls up to check in with Blic and the lookout confirms negative for any visuals on the mermen or any other contacts for that matter. Gramps begins to speak what he knows about the mermen race, and a few other aquatic races. Apparently, they do not attack ships often and do not typically like to tangle with surface folk. Very occasionally, they can be spotted sunning themselves on rocks or shipwrecks, like a seal would, but are for the most part very flighty and normally avoid all contact. He has apparently faced them once before in his long career on the high seas and says it was not nearly as big a group of them as there could have been. He thinks they were coming back to gather the rest of the crates and floating items and would have probably left the man be in the boat. They must have been emboldened from their successful attack and taking of the southern merchantman when the Seahawk came along.

Everyone looks around at each other, sharing what will be an experience that they are sure they will never forget. The rescued man is taken below and Jennynia and Ulrich move over to have a look at Jovak. The dwarf general puts up a fuss at the attention. "I am alright, Jennynia. Get the wounded below and take care of them, first and foremost. Please..."
The gnomish woman hands him a potion bottle and instructs him to drink it before acquiescing and following the dwarf's request.
Ziller secures his wand in his belt line and moves down to the main deck. Jennynia gives him a potion as well. He takes a look at Jovak and frowns. "I'll take it from here then, sir."
Jovak pauses and then relaxes noticeably, nodding in the affirmative. The halfling then looks over to Ulrich and points at Jovak. "Take the general back inside and see that he has what he needs. I'll join you there shortly."

After a quick check of the items gathered, Ziller looks about to the others present. "I suggest everyone drink their curatives and see to their injuries. Anyone still hurt badly, get below and see Shanny. Those of you that are able, please remain here and form up a watch. Until we can get everyone's condition sorted and figure out where we stand, I'd like us to be ready, just in case those mermen fancy another go on us. Any questions?" he asks, looking about to everyone as he scrutinizes folks' conditions with a look of concern.

OOC: The mermen ambush (Encounter 3) was repelled and is now officially over! As threatened previously, I'll get over to the Party Kills & Treasure thread and get that updated this weekend. That also goes for the previous encounter #2, the Giant Squid attack. Once I get all the Party Kills & Treasure calculated, I'll be sending out pms with individual experience points afterward. I will try and have that part done no later than early next week.

Wow, back to back ones on the encounter die but the party and crew made it through this time without any losses, which is still amazing! You know, it's a funny thing. I can't help but think of that show, the Deadliest Catch whenever I think of someone throwing a grappling line from a ship... :)

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need further clarifications!

Healing [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

Well, that was pretty crappy...

Bog will head down below for additional healing. He wants to be at full strength in case anything else happens.

Caelvanna, her back still stinging from the javelin strike, will follow Bog down below to seek attention from Shanny. While she still doesn't particularly enjoy being at sea, Shanny has previously worked wonders on helping her overcome her initial sea sickness and she has every confidence he'll be able to help her yet again.

That could've gone better. HP adjusted.

Emm quickly slugs down the brew offered, then runs below calling Sam's name.

Sailing west on the Seahawk TOD: Day 11 evening time

#156 Post by Argennian »

The Seahawk continues to sail westward as the crew regroups. Healing brews are consumed and the shipwreck survivor and injured are taken to the infirmary below...

All of Shanny's potions are consumed. Those that imbibe the witch woman's home-brewed curative get a good buzz and feel much, much better, morale-wise. Ulrich helps Jovak back into the stern castle and proffers the curative given him to the dwarven lord. He consumes that along with the one that Jennynia gave him and appears much better for it. Ziller joins them shortly thereafter, along with the items gathered from the debris field. Emm heads below and thankfully finds Sam hiding out and safe below their bunks. The young child is pale with fear but obviously relieved when the druidess appears to check on her. Lauranna, Griffo, Thalion, Troc and Farlon are all moved to bunks in the infirmary and looked after by Shanny, Jennynia, Najania and the lady Tamara.
Bogdan and Caelvanna rejoin those others able to on deck to make up an armed watch. It seems that just about everyone on deck save Gramps was injured in the mermen ambush. Nineteen heavy bolts and thirteen javelins are recovered and thrown in a pile with the six grappling hooks that had their lines severed, the party's physical proof and trophy reminder of the harrowing ordeal.

***************************

The thankfully uneventful afternoon fades rather quickly as mighty Hazara again makes her daily descent towards the western horizon. The sunset is a magnificent one and any that view it are taken in by it's beauty and tranquility. It's announced that Ziller would like those of the party that are able to join him for dinner. Hazara sinks below the horizon and darkness begins it's nightly approach on the day, accompanied by a cool sea breeze and calm waters. The smell of food from the galley winds it's way about the ship and when the time arrives, dinner is called.

Bogdan, Caelvanna and Ulrich, as well as Emm and Sam, make their way to the banquet table to find Ziller, Billings and Gentleman Billy already seated. Tamber carries Lauranna up from below and helps the injured High elf into an open chair before heading outside to supplement those on station. Griffo and Thalion remain in the infirmary below. Cutler and the two young boys arrive to serve a warm and welcome dinner of freshly-baked rolls, fish, rice and chowder. The items from the shipwreck are gathered about the halfling commander as he rises and addresses you.

"Good evening, friends. I am very thankful that we survived that without further loses. It would seem the last few days have been more eventful than any of us would have wanted to plan for or hope against. Nevertheless, we are sailing westward again. The fog and high clouds have lifted, so we should be able to reference the stars and establish a better sense of where we are currently. According to what our new arrival has stated, we hope to reach the Sprice Tridents within the next day or so. We'll do our best to avoid the three main islands of the chain and make for one of the smaller ones to the south, in order to make landfall and begin effecting repairs to the ship. We'll be on the lookout for any pirates or navy ships in the area, and with any luck, can make it in without notice or incident. I am hopeful we will be meeting up with another vessel there, one that contains more friends and allies of the people. We were originally scheduled to meet up with them at the great kelp beds, but after what happened back on the trail, we decided to change course and forgo the rendezvous, for fear that it could also be a trap. Regardless, these islands were the fallback point. With any luck and Dagda's favor, they will already be there awaiting us," he imparts with both a hopeful and sad look in his eyes.

After a brief moment of reflection, he sets down his tea and reaches to retrieve one of the backpacks that was in the medium-sized floating crate and the small silver-lined chest that was in the longboat with the eastern sailor. "The textiles and silk bundles we recovered were in fact from the southern continent, as we originally thought. The two backpacks, the eastern ornamental vase and this small chest were not. According to the old mate we rescued, whose name is Yabin, their ship met up with another one just over a week ago. It was a Karagonian merchantman, and one that had just hailed from Newshore en route to Travesta in the north. It was during that meeting on the high sea that a dozen or so crates and this vase and chest were brought on board. His captain met with their captain and it seems that a deal was struck to deliver these items to the crown. These backpacks," he continues, placing his hand on the one he set on the table, "were equipped with some very high-end mountaineering gear and some strange tools of the kind and type we've never seen before. According to Jennynia and Najania, these tools are very, very old and appear to be of either ancient gnomish or perhaps even dwarven manufacture. They seem to think the tools work some kind of apparatus, but cannot be sure at present. The eastern vase has a strange but very powerful protective spell cast upon it. Further research will be needed before we attempt to open it and discern its contents. This small chest, however, was not as difficult, thankfully. Billy was able to open it and inside we found these," he details as he opens the lid and lifts up a large, strange-looking silver key along with small scroll case and a heavy-looking wrought-silver necklace sporting a massive ruby gem. He passes them around the table so that everyone gets the opportunity to inspect them. The necklace is absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship is both foreign but amazing in it's construction. The ruby stone it sports is the biggest you've ever seen and must be worth a literal fortune alone. The silver key is huge and heavier than it really should be. Stranger than that is that it's cold to the touch when you handle it, almost as if the metal had just been pried from a block of ice. The small scroll case is made of ivory with elegant silver banding with glyphs and designs inlaid.

"The key and the necklace are very, very old and both appear to have had enchantments of some kind placed upon them. They appear safe enough to handle but we obviously still need to do more research on them. According to the letter in this scroll case, which was also trapped, they were recovered from some archeological dig going on at an ancient installation. It's a site they discovered the year previous. Best estimates, based upon notes about Newshore, are that the site is located in one the coastal forests by two days travel, perhaps somewhere northwest of Newshore, near the foot of the Gythas Mountain range. The letter details an ongoing dig there for some kind of artifact as well as the recent discovery of other ancient installations scattered throughout the region. There are also strange symbols present on the parchment. Shanny says it looks to be code of some kind that share similarities to ones used by the underdark races, but she can't be sure. At least not yet."
Ziller takes a seat, the worried look again returning to his visage as he looks to each of you. "Regardless, these are both interesting and troublesome developments, especially since they were supposedly marked to be delivered to the king. What is most worrisome is that we had absolutely no knowledge that any agents of the crown had established a real presence or foothold in the western region. We've always marked and monitored potential spies of the crown that operate in Newshore but there are apparently those in the region we've completely missed. We will need to make sure that our bases and refuges have not been compromised. It would also appear we must reconfirm the integrity of our network when we reach the west and make plans accordingly. Although more research and study must be done, we were extremely lucky to have had these items come into our possession. We will, most certainly, not squander the boon," he finishes as he gets the key, necklace and scroll tube back and returns them to the small silver-encrusted chest.

The halfling commander closes the lid and then makes to pour himself more tea. He nods to Billings. The captain looks around the table and queries everyone's status. "I know some of you are still hurt and need to rest up. Shanny is brewing more curative and will have some ready on the morrow. We still need and could use any of you that are fit enough for duty. Tis best we remain on high alert and be as ready for trouble as we can. If any of you have need of additional items or weapons, please say so and we'll get you set up. The weapon lockers on deck have been restocked and we've placed about a dozen loaded crossbows out on deck for easy reach. We'll switch those for new ones after each shift to keep them fresh. Gramps will spend some time with each of you on station and go through what to do if we come across and have to fight with another ship. That about covers it for now. Are there any questions, friends? Anything you have need of?"

OOC: ok gang, feel free to offer any comments/ask any questions of Ziller or Billings here but need you to confirm IC if your character is able and/or willing to be put in the watch rotation. Those shifts will start on Day 12 and I'll move things forward with the next action post.

I still need to update stuff in the Party Encounters: Kills, Treasure & XP thread once it's fully disseminated but looking to get everyone's base xp totaled up and current. As Dave speculated, this last encounter was a juicy one and I'm still planning on sending out individual PMs to confirm where everyone's at. When that happens, I know that some/most of you will have enough XP to be able to level up again, so we'll discuss that and make arrangements for undertaking training In Game.

Point of Order regarding when your character goes negative in hit points. (OSRIC,pg124) I know that Lauranna (as well as Griffo, Thalion and a few of the npc crew members) went negative hit points during that last encounter, and that BtB, will require an entire week to fully recover. I know this is pretty brutal but I do have factors in play that can result in positive modifiers to that timeline & scenario. Nuke: I'll get a pm to you with more details on that later today.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or need further clarifications!

Bog, feeling more and more a part of the crew, stands and offers to help with shifts, performing whatever duties he's already been taught and willing to learn new ones if necessary.

"Hopefully another dose of Shanny's spirits will set me straight and I'll be back to me old self," he adds.

Caelvanna finds that for as much as she dislikes actually being on the water, she certainly enjoys feasting upon the various fish it produces. Clearly lacking the custom elven refinement and social graces, she chows down on the freshly-baked rolls and fish with vigor, unconcerned with any curious looks she may receive.

Later, while at the banquet table with Ziller, Billings, Gentleman Billy and the rest, she has another interesting moment for her; this time more true to her elven heritage, but unlike her individual personality. Normally uninterested in possessions or wealth, she finds her eyes open wide in awe whe she first observes the silver necklace with massive ruby gem inset. "Beautiful" she finds herself saying quietly, before catching herself and taking on a more serious demeaner. "Impressive" she says matter-of-factly when the item is passed to her, hoping no one overheard her previous comment.

After the meeting, Caelvanna will rejoin those on deck and continue to make up an armed watch and help out with whatever duties she is called upon for.

I am fit to stand watch, thanks to Shanny's medicine, the Priestess speaks. I am now also able to perform some meager healing of my own; on the morrow I will gladly assist 3 who still require it. But it comes at a cost: I will need a measure of uninterrupted rest, so if I am to watch, I would prefer to be among the first. One other item, I am limited by my component supply. Unlike Ulrich, the tactile portions of my healing need replenished.

Emm will change her 2nd level spells to 3 Cure Light Wounds for the next day only, unless more is nessecary.

Lauranna was a bowl of chowder and some bread.

She listens in quiet thought, wondering if it is all worth it. Her attention was captured by the necklace, and she listened to more of the conversation.
