Ulrich, seeing his cousin get wounded, loses his focus. Unlike Hartnid, he strikes out wildly with rage, forgetting his years of training. Cursing his opponent in the dwarven tongue, he lashes out.

To hit with staff [1d20] = 1

Team Roll [1d6] = 6
Team Roll [1d100] = 10

The enemies sword whistles over Griffo's head with no need for him to crouch or attempt to avoid it. Not the first time this has happened but it never fails to bring a smile to his face when it does. Hoping to capitalize on his foe being off balance he strikes quickly.

To hit with Long Sword [1d20] = 4 Damage with Long Sword [1d8] = 3

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: just after midnight)

Round 6

~ A harsh slap of cold accompanied by yet another lower, growling rumble emanates around the area as the massive, horrid beast in the swirling fog (and now facing mostly west on the trail) roars in out-worldly rage. A sphere of greenish energy suddenly rises up above its head just further down the trail. Anyone noticing the sphere would surely see the missing armored dwarf with the massive 2-handed war-hammer within, as not just he but the mighty hammer are brightly glowing red. The fog around the beast begins to glow green and swirl faster.

The elven mage with the funny hat plants his feet and draws another wand from his belt. Simultaneously with staff in his left and wand in his right, he fires off both barrels at the great four-legged nightmare. A massive bright bolt of red energy slams into the beast in the rear at the same time an even brighter and continuous ray of pulsing grayish-blue light impacts it directly behind its horned head. The creature shakes violently from both hits but maintains its hateful focus and control over the red dwarf in the sphere.

Meanwhile, the two rapid successions of the much-brighter light ahead play to the party’s advantage. Not only can they now see much better but the dark-skinned, yellow-eyed humanoid savages are forced to use a hand to shield their eyes and look away, thereby greatly affecting their combat effectiveness and making them an easier target...

The dwarven cleric cousins, their holy symbols to Moradin still noticeably glowing red, move to take advantage. Hartnid redoubles his focus and allows his years of military training and routine during the Great War to take over. The warrior facing him raises its hand axe and blinks its eyes just in time to receive a perfectly-placed, massive overhead blow from the dwarf’s flail that crushes its skull with a funny crackle. It falls lifeless to the soft earth. Unfortunately for cousin Ulrich, his military training flees him in the face of a strong, oncoming dwarven rage! He maneuvers to swing his staff mightily at the humanoid warrior facing him and trips on the root of a bush. He does not drop his staff but lands face down in a furious bustle of ferns, scale mail and sharp dwarven curses. The small humanoid warrior swings and hits air where the dwarf just stood.

The armored soldier looks down in shock at the black arrow sticking out his chest for not but a fleeting moment. He raises his battle axe and lets loose with a loud battle-cry, charging in a mean streak towards the six humanoids that are now moving more freely. The deadly battle axe flies as he reaches the archer and a severed head flies off, up and end over end in response. The other five humanoid warriors try to converge on the still fast-moving soldier and attack with averted eyes. Only a lucky few are able to land seemingly-glancing blows.

The warrior facing Caelvanna has its spear attack go astray due the light ahead and easily misses the Wild elf. She swings her short sword with urgent need but again misses her mark. Griffo maneuvering with shield facing forward, strikes out with his longsword but both he and his hand-axe wielding opponent miss each other in awkward fashion.

The half-elf archer just up the trail behind them lunges at the last unlucky humanoid facing him, a dual arc of deadly glowing sword and dagger making streaks in the cool coastal night air as he both cuts the spear in half and eviscerates the small warrior. It clutches at its innards as it falls forward to the earth. Behind and just south of the trail, the remaining burly guard cries out in bloody retribution and mightily runs his last opponent through to the hilt of his longsword. Blood flies from the humanoid’s toothy mouth as it swings its axe in reply but weakly connects.

Sheba lets out what sounds like a desperate bark as the older female half-elf continues to offer medical aid to the helpless Gentleman Billy. Her elderly companion, a dagger in hand, rummages through his satchel for something to help.

While still crouching behind her shield and facing back east along the trail, Emm utters some words and suddenly a bright purplish glow outlines what appears to be a hooded figure firing a crossbow of some sort in the bushes. The figure freezes suddenly still and just a second later suddenly lets loose with a muffled cry as something impacts it from the rear!

The two wide-eyed gnomes continue to apply their ministrations to the old man. They pull him off the fallen burly guard and suddenly notice the dark black fletching of the projectile sticking out of his chest. One of them begins barking orders in gnomish whilst the other tears through his pack feverishly in search of something.

There’s still no sign of Bog, Thalion, Lauranna, the older knight that hit the tree, or the cloaked halfling. The young nobleman is still hidden in the bushes and out of sight. The old man and the young child are still hiding in the brush by the druidess.

"I've had just about enough of you," Caelvanna snarls, bringing her short sword slashing down at her humanoid opponent.

To hit with short sword [1d20+1] = 12+1 = 13 <-- not sure if this hits
Damage against S/M with short sword [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2 <-- just in case

"I really need to dispose of this guy," Caelvanna thinks to herself, itching to drop back into ranged combat again.

To hit with staff [1d20+2] = 10+2 = 12

Hardly noticing the thunderous blow he'd just struck, Hartnid's focus is shattered as he sees his cousin lose his footing. "Ulrich!" he cries as he leaps to his cousin's aid, striking out at the warrior engaged with him.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 14 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4 damage

Griffo looks his opponent in the eye and says. "I've wasted about enough time with you already." He then swings his sword in a sweeping arc.

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: just after midnight)

Round 7

~ Although the ghastly menace in the greenish, fast-swirling fog still shudders from both the blast of the elf’s staff, as well as the bright and continuous grayish-green beam of light from his shiny wand, a deeper rumbling grows in intensity and the air becomes colder still. The floating green sphere of energy encapsulating the glowing red armored dwarf seems to be trying to shrink in and crush him. The massive 2-handed war hammer begins to glow a magnificently-prolific red and responds in a wild, rapid cadence of crackles and pops, filling the chilled air with a screeching electrical charge.

The elf mage continues to fire the continuous stream of bright energy from his wand into the back of the beast’s grotesque, horned head. Suddenly, from what must be well over 100 feet into the trees to the north, a bolt of greenish-yellow lightning blasts out of the deeper brush and strikes the elf. At the moment of impact, a semi-permeable sphere about the elven mage glows red, shudders and blinks out, appearing for lack of a better term, to have soaked up most of the energy of the hit. The elf does stumble and almost trips but continues to stay on target with the beam from the wand, looking to his right quickly to see what just happened. The staff’s angry popping is momentarily dulled and its glowing red beacon dims just a bit…

The half elf archer, having already dispatched his immediate enemies, is looking about him for more when he witnesses the lightning attack from the trees to the north. Without a second’s hesitation, he charges north towards where the attack originated, looking to his left for a fleeting moment to lock eyes strangely with his magely companion. As he sprints into the brush, he zigzags a path between trees, his glowing short sword and dagger still in hand and leaving streaks of magical light in the unnaturally-cold night air.

Just to the right of his path, the armored soldier continues his battle with the five humanoid warriors that were previously entangled with the uncannily-hard-to-kill archer. They regroup with astonishing skill and the mighty fighter endures a much more aggressive and stunning combined attack. He continues to swing his unrelenting axe, but much slower and with exaggerated effort. This time only two of the small dark warriors go down with mortal wounds.

Again the much-brighter light ahead on the trail plays to the party’s advantage. The humanoid warriors are still forced to avert their gaze. Some continue to try and hold up a free hand to shield their eyes. Their combat effectiveness is still compromised and they continue to be an easier target than they normally would...

The small darkened warrior facing Ulrich tries to take advantage of his opponent’s stumble, but with its eyes averted to the light, just barely misses its mark with a massive effort. Having had to flinch away to avoid the near-strike, the dwarven cleric swings his staff in a likewise-massive, anger-fueled arc that swishes air mere inches from the humanoid's face. It snarls in time to receive a solid whack of Hartnid’s bloody flail. The little savage staggers back but holds on to its axe and does not go down.

The humanoid facing Caelvanna gets just inside her guard to land a grazing attack with its spear (2 dam). The Wild elf warrior swings and thrusts her short sword in a desperate series of lunges and feints, and this time finally catches the lucky bastard with a grazing wound of its own in repayment. Griffo’s opponent also proves itself worthy, getting past his shield to strike the halfling a moderate blow (4 dam). The fighter swings his longsword back at the dark-skinned humanoid with more earnest a result, catching the humanoid warrior with a solid strike in return.

From somewhere south of the trail, in the trees and brush, a bellowing voice that could be Bog the half-orc issues forth: "Need some help here!". The burly guard, who was already looking around for more enemies while extracting his longsword from the chest of his dead adversary, clears his steel and rushes low yet quick into the shadows towards the voice. The ring of steel on steel can be heard to await him.

Back on the trail, both Sheba and the elderly half-elf female cry out in unison. Their companion, the elderly half-elf noble, with dagger in one hand and potion bottle in the other, is looking down at the strange black fletching of a thick projectile protruding from his chest. He looks up to lock eyes with his traveling companion, his face calm and loving, her face a visage of horror realized. She moves quickly to catch him as he falls forward, his tear-streaked smile landing on her shoulder. Sheba lets out a wail that pierces the din of battle as the woman begins trying to fumble in the backpack for something else.

Emm with spear to hand and determination upon visage, charges the bright, glowing figure in the bushes. The faerie-fired purple figure spins down into the bushes and back towards the trail with a grunt, obviously trying to evade something that just struck it. From behind where it had stood appears another, this one not glowing but coming out of the shadows with a short sword to hand. It is Lauranna the High elf! She swings at the unknown glowing figure buts misses. Meanwhile, the druid makes a quick but controlled approach and, using the glow of her target to guide her, lands a perfectly placed, piercing blow, driving her spear down deep. The bright purple-colored figure lets out another cry, this one in much more effeminate tone.

The gnomes suddenly appear very serious and business-like, applying all manner of desperate actions and ministrations that they can muster to the old man in the bright-colored robes. One of them holds the old man’s head and barks out orders in gnomish while the other attempts to pour something in the man’s mouth.

There’s still no sign of Thalion, the older knight that hit the tree, or the cloaked halfling. The young nobleman is still hidden out of sight in the bushes. Just behind and across the trail from the gnomes, the old man struggles with the young child, as it appears she is trying to get away from him or perhaps breath in his death-clutch.

"I hope I don't regret this..." Caelvanna thinks, feeling noticeably weaker as a result of two strikes against her. "If I can just get past this guy."

Caelvanna takes a few purposeful steps backwards but remains engaged with her opponent. Determined, she waits for her best calculated opportunity. "May this --" she snaps before lashing out viciously with her short sword.

Party initiative [1d6] = 1, additional rolls [1d20] = 9 [1d100] = 45

Hoping that he's now garnered the attention of the warrior attacking his cousin, Hartnid maneuvers carefully in order to try to get his opponent to expose his back to Ulrich. Then, he swings his flail, attempting to finish him off.

Attack with flail: [1d20] = 17 to-hit, [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3 damage

Emm, suddenly enboldened by her successful attack on the archer, and in the knowlege she is no longer alone in foiling the skulk, presses her advantage and strikes again.

[1d20] = 6

Lauranna is also glad to see another working of this one, so she positions herself so that the foe is between her and Emm, hoping that one of them will be attacking from behind.

She swings again, wanting this to end soon.

[1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8 to hit rd8

Day 1: Coast Trail (TOD: just after midnight)

Round 8

~ The temperature of the coastal night air is now near freezing as the greenish, faster-swirling fog around the beast beams brighter still. Another deep, sharp rumble echoes throughout the area. The strangely-floating sphere of energy gripping its dwarven prisoner flashes rapidly between dark green and bright red in a dizzying, dyslexic wash. The armored dwarf can no longer be discerned but the bright red outline of the massive 2-handed war hammer can still be seen through the barrage of flashes, cracks and pops. Suddenly, a grinding metal-on-metal crash rings out and the flashing sphere of dwarf and red war hammer flies backward west along the trail towards the beach and well away from the creature with tremendous force and speed...

From the deep brush north of the trail, another bolt of greenish-yellow lightning issues forth from a location close by to where it did previous. This time, however, it is pointed mostly southeast and in the general direction which the half-elf with the glowing sword and dagger was quickly approaching it. A few smaller trees splinter and a massive thicket is near vaporized by the thunderbolt. There is no longer any visible sign of the half-elf archer nor his glowing sword and dagger in the night.

Meanwhile, the elven mage looks to his right at the green-yellow flash but continues to fire the continuous stream of bright grayish-blue energy from his wand into the back of the creature’s head with unknown effect. His staff begins to look as if it’s recovering its strength, as it glows a brighter red and begins to again serenade the crowd with its angry popping din.

Just behind and to the north of the trail, the armored soldier continues to do battle with the three remaining humanoid aggressors. They appear to be moving much, much faster and again make astonishingly accurate and well-placed attacks. The soldier staggers from the telling blows and no longer appears to be moving the speed he was before. He swings the unstoppable battle axe in an awkward and desperate way but still manages to catch one of the now-much-quicker humanoids with a deadly backswing.

The grayish-blue light from the elf’s wand ahead is still very bright. The small yellow-eyed, dark-skinned warriors still appear compromised by their inability to see normally...

The enemy humanoid facing both Ulrich and his cousin, moves towards Hartnid and swings its axe with an animal ferocity. The axe impacts the dwarven cleric’s splint mail with a solid hit but appears to bounce off it, leaving only a strange red mark at the point of impact. The clerics of Moradin, now both very focused to the matter of hand, land solid, simultaneous blows of heavy flail and staff, finally dropping their enthusiastic antagonist to the woodland floor.

The small, dark-skinned enemy facing Caelvanna stabs at her again in earnest, just barely missing. She gracefully sidesteps the powerful spear thrust and swings her short sword down with graduated confidence and control. It connects, cleaving a modest wound in the little humanoid’s chest. It staggers as black blood sprays from its wound, but remains standing with a renewed grimace of fury. Griffo’s antagonist again shows its prowess by easily defeating his defenses, but fortunately only just catching the resilient fighter with a light wound (1 dam). The halfling warrior maneuvers away from the humanoid’s weapon using his military training and strikes out towards his already-wounded adversary with his bloodied longsword. It cuts deep, hitting bone, and the dark-skinned warrior drops dead to the ground with a light thud.

To the south of the trail, the remaining burly guard continues to move behind a stand of trees and dense thicket and towards where the familiar voice of Bog had called out previous. The sounds of melee can be barely discerned over the other din, accompanied by an occasional fleeting blue spark or two…

Back on the trail, the elderly half-elf female now works feverishly over the top of her fallen half-elf male companion whilst Sheba jumps around yipping frantically. The young nobleman for the first time suddenly appears out of the thick brush and comes to her side. The woman begins both pushing on his chest and trying to pour a vial of lightly glowing bluish liquid into his semi-open mouth. Most of the vials contents spill over his cheeks. She exchanges words with the just-nobleman as he looks closer at both the older half-elf and Gentleman Billy, horror and disbelief pasted upon his visage.

Emm and Lauranna, positioned to both sides of the faerie-fired individual that spun down into the bushes, see it’s glowing purple outline attempting to flee on all fours through the underbrush with surprising speed. They both move to strike with spear and sword, hoping to take advantage of the clearly-evident magical aura defining it, but frustratingly get their weapons deflected by the many trunks, branches and vines of the underbrush.

The gnomes continue to offer their unique ministrations to the old man in bright-colored robes lying on the trail next to his fallen bodyguard. The gnome holding the old man’s head slaps the other’s face and barks out more orders. The gnome with the handprint on his cheek begins pouring the remnants of the flask over the black missile protruding from the old man’s chest. The liquid sizzles and smokes upon contact...

There’s still no sign of Thalion or Bog (although the half-orc’s voice was heard south of the trail), the older knight that hit the tree, or the cloaked halfling. The old man with the young child continues to hide in the bushes and hold the squirming youngster in a suffocating bear hug.

Total damage taken by party members (seen on trail presently) during entire encounter:

Caelvanna: 6 points of weapon damage
Hartnid: 1 point of weapon damage
Griffo: 5 points of weapon damage
Armored soldier: 59 points of weapon damage****

*************

Gentleman Billy: lying unconscious (due to ??) but stabilized; status unknown
Old Knight: lying unconscious/KIA? (impact that broke tree) somewhere in the brush; status unknown
Burly Guard#1: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow); status unknown
Old Man in colorful robes: lying unconscious (felled by bolt/arrow) but being attended by the gnomes; status still unknown
Old Half-elf Man: just felled from bolt/arrow but being attended to by both the half-elf woman and the young nobleman.

**** PMs going out to those PCs off the trail*, so please, wait for these before you respond with your declared actions for Round 9! ****

Initiative, Round 8: Xaxyx rolled a 1 for the party; the baddies rolled 3! The enemy on/nearby the trail are still at -2 to hit from the bright lights ahead on the trail; the party was also still at +2 to hit them. (The d20 and d100 rolls for factors past and building, still unknown. )

Initiative, Round 9: I need Alethan to roll a d6 and a d100 for the party.

Party Roll [1d6] = 5

Party Roll [1d100] = 60

And it looks like Thalion and I have both made our PM actions at this point. I believe we are the only two PCs still off-trail.
Dragon foot. Bamboo pole. Little mouse. Tiny boy.

Argennian wrote:The small, dark-skinned enemy facing Caelvanna stabs at her again in earnest, just barely missing. She gracefully sidesteps the powerful spear thrust and swings her short sword down with graduated confidence and control. It connects, cleaving a modest wound in the little humanoid’s chest. It staggers as black blood sprays from its wound, but remains standing with a renewed grimace of fury.
A momentary look of concern appears on Caelvanna's face. "Unlike me," she thinks "this guy doesn't appear close to dying." Her instinct is to flee. To disengage from her foe and seek a position nearby to resume her ranged attacks, but she realizes she will be exposing herself to an easy attack and fears she wouldn't survive. She does her best to maintain a confident demeanor in the face of her enemy. "You still want so more?" she snipes.

To hit with short sword [1d20+1] = 9+1 = 10

"Oh, hell..." she thinks as her various pokes and slashes fail to make contact.
