Nothing to see here!
[1d20] = 14
The elf creeps back to the ladder and slinks up it to listen carefully at the grate. All is quiet in the room above though the stink of unwashed bodies is thick in the air at the top of the ladder.

Manred uses the tip of his spear to lift the hatch ever so slowly, just enough to peek through. If all is clear, he ascends and looks around, poised to cast his charming spell if necessary, or jump back down the hatch if multiple figures show themselves.

Manred carefully lifts the grate and looks around. Sunlight filters through a hole in the ceiling to show filthy blankets and debris pushed up in discrete piles around the edges of the room. The smell of unwashed bodies fills your nostrils but underneath that is the smell of a firepit as well as the copper smell of blood. Climbing up into the room the elf sees the crude firepit directly below the skylight. There is a closed, heavy wooden door to the east, west, and north from this chamber, noises coming from behind the west door. The room looks 40 feet from west to east. At the west end it is 10 feet wide and near the east end bulges out to the north to be 20 feet at its widest from north to south.

Manred reaches down into the hatch and beckons the others up with his hand. He then moves as slowly as he can to the west door and listens.

Travix waits for his turn on the ladder, almost afraid of what they might find in this new place, what with the smell and all.

Listening at the west door, the elf hears at least two individuals talking to one another sporadically in orcish. More consistent is the sound of chopping and the smell of blood is stronger here at the door.

Manred stands motionless while the others come up. He silently points to the door and puts a finger to his lips.

Travix smiles a wicked grin at hearing that there are orcs present just beyond the door. He closes his eyes and presses the palms of his hands together, placing them along side his face to indicate that he can cause them to fall asleep if need be.

He awaits the others opinions before acting.

Graela joins the others and when she hears the chopping noises on the other side of the door, coupled with the smell of blood, she gives Travix a look of understanding, and attempts to shove the door open.

Graela shoves the door open and it slams against the wall. The group is looking down a stone hallway that goes for 20 feet before opening into a much larger room than the one you are currently in and the ceiling looks to be higher as well. Ahead against the left wall is an opening through which daylight seems to be coming through. While the light is weak, it seems as if there may be an exit to the outside somewhere through there. The smell of blood and entrails is strong now with the door open. It is difficult to tell from where you are standing but it looks as if much of the room ahead is to the right of the hallway. The room appears to be well-lit, there are torches burning in wall sconces at intervals along the walls ahead that you can see.

The loud noise of the door hitting the wall is immediately followed by quiet. The chopping sound has stopped as well as the talking.

Travix cringes at the dwarves audacity but tries to keep a clear head now that the shit just got thick.

He tries to prod the others into moving forward, thinking that the possible opening to the outside may be to their advantage.

If the group advances, he readies his sleeping magic and keeps a lookout from behind so nothing comes at them from the 2 closed doors.

"I think they know we are here now."

"Then let's not keep them waiting," Graela hisses, moving forward quickly, spear in hand.
She hurries to the corner of the room, counts to 10, and then peers around.

Manred grips his own spear and rushes up to join Graela. "No use in hesitating now," he says. Without stopping, he walks into the room calmly and says, "Hello again, friend," in orcish to the first person he sees, casting charm person.

He continues to make small talk with the (hopefully) charmed orc while walking briskly and calmly past him toward the other(s), launching into a sudden attack only when he gets close enough.

Manred spear attack (offensive focus): [1d20+3] = 5+3 = 8, damage [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3

Stepping around the corner reveals a large square room with a raised platform to your right, almost like a stage, taking up one corner. There are stone stairs leading up to it on either end. Two large tables and barrels are up on this raised floor, another large table and barrel on the ground floor up against this area. The smell of blood is thick here and splatters and "remains" everywhere show this to be a butcher shop of sorts. A series of large hooks along part of the walls hold up hanging meats. On the raised platform, about 30 feet away from Manred, an orc holding a cleaver and wearing a leather apron is just now turning around to see who is speaking.

On the ground floor, about 20 feet away from Manred, an orc was already facing the party's direction. On the table before this orc is a huge meat grinder which he was evidently using as his arms are bloody and coated with clotted remains up to the elbows. This closer orc's angry expression melts away to confusion. I don't remember you, he replies to Manred, his arms lowering to his sides. While the party's attention is certainly on the grisly scene before them, on the opposite side of the chamber you can see a hallway leading north. A grunt is heard from the opening in the left corner that reveals some daylight but nothing is seen from there.

Party has initiative.

Travix stays tight to the south wall and moves towards the cave opening, hoping to get a better look at the grunter.

He readies his sleep magic in case the group quickly becomes outnumbered.

Manred ascends the platform, still talking to both of the orcs. He quickly changes his tactic and tries to herd them out of the room and toward his companions lying in wait: "Get to the hatch in that back room, both of you! There's a heavy crate being drawn up, and it'll be our heads if it falls and breaks! Hey, are you deaf? Stop drooling and move, hurry!"

Hoping at least that the charmed orc takes the bait, Manred approaches the one who isn't charmed, intending to engage in mortal combat if he isn't fooled.

Just to clarify, since this will likely change your chosen course of action, charm person only works on one humanoid. Judging from expression and posture, Manred's spell was successful on the ground floor orc. But the orc further away on the raised level is obviously seeing you as intruders. Do you still want to go ahead with your stated action or do something different?

I think I would, though probably clarified to speak more directly to the charmed orc. His tone is definitely leaning on, "Quick, before the boss comes us and thinks we've screwed up."

Here's my intent: I don't expect the one on the raised level to buy it, but I'm hoping that Manred's bluff will get the charmed orc moving before he can stop to think, or become dissuaded by the other orc. If we stay put they'll just raise an alarm, so I'm hoping we can separate them, neutralize the aggressive one, and keep the charmed one as a resource (for now, at least), hopefully before any further alarms are raised. If things fall apart Travix still has his finger on the panic button.

Shit will hit the fan before the charmed orc will be out of the room but I'll give you 60% chance the charm holds for now once the fan splatter begins...which is coming in 3, 2, 1...

The charmed orc, still confused but more than a little worried about possibly being blamed for freight breakage, begins moving toward the doorway your party came from. This orc is currently about 4 feet away from Graela and Salt Peter. He gives a hard stare at the dwarf and halfling he is about to pass and uncertainty wars on his face.

Travix wills himself to go unnoticed as he scoots with his back against the south wall, inching toward the cave exit.

Manred boldly marches up the steps toward an angry and unconvinced orc who is now rushing the elf with upraised cleaver. The angry orc barks at his companion in orcish: What's the matter, you fool? Attack!

Your party has initiative for any immediate action.

Thinking that the elf is trying to usher the charmed orc into the hands of the 2 others, Travix continues on his course towards the opening. He stays alert for what is about to enter in case he needs to use his magic on whatever was doing the grunting.
