chapter 2 - heirlooms

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
The group falls in line and creeps further down the dark hallway. The hall turns to the right and the stench behind you seems lessened a bit though the damp is still there. The gnome walks ahead in darkness, the torchlight behind making his form dim but visible as the light flickers against the stone walls around you. You see him stop and gesture that there is a branching to the left. He seems to be listening intently. You can barely hear some rustling sounds.
Moving forward your group can see the hallway continues forward into darkness as well as a hallway leading to the left. It is to the left that the gnome starts moving, his ear cocked as he silently creeps.
I have the requested marching order as:
Barnaby the gnome
Graela
Tip
Hennoth
Travix
Salt Peter
Hennoth is carrying a lit torch. Is anyone else?

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Hennoth and Travix may be the most sensible torch-bearers. Everyone else in the party is pint-sized, and, as the two spell casters, it's okay if they're a bit delayed in melee.
Salt Peter has his bow out, with an arrow at the ready. He checks behind them regularly to make sure nothing nasty comes up behind them.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Trav is fine carrying a torch, as I already stated here.
The mage moves along with the others, happy that they are all together again.
Lets keep moving and find this damn well. I need to get some sleep before I become an undead.
He whispers to the others after hearing the rustling.
What do you suppose that noise is? Lets be careful and go find out.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Graela follows Barnaby as quietly as she can, spear ready, eyes alert and ears listening for any surprises.
Winter is coming...

Tip:
In order to be able to use his bow, Tip offers Hennoth his torch. If the priest accepts, Tip will nock an arrow and proceed down the hall with caution.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Barnaby and Graela slowly move into the left hall which soon opens into a long room. The others follow and torchlight reveals this as having been a workroom in the past but now is littered with debris: work tables, shelves, broken crockery and glassware. The rustling seems to be coming from the back left corner where you see a large fissure in the wall. Three sets of red eyes, close to the floor are visible in the corner.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
"Rats, if I'm not mistaken," Graela says, pointing her spear at the red eyes. "Are we determined to search this room? If so, might want to throw 'em something to eat...so they don't want to eat us!"
Winter is coming...
Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Salt Peter: "Rats? Ah, ye jus' wave yer torch at 'em and they scamper off till yer gone!
"N'less they be rabid. Or 'ave ye e'er seen them giant rats? They're jus' mean."
Judging the size of the red eyes peering in the darkness, Salt Peter digs some rations out of his pack—a few strips of salted pork. "If'n I toss this in 'ere, let's try ter get a better look at what they be. An' keep yer arrows ready!"

Tip:
"We had a problem with rats back at the farm at one point. Not the giant variety mind you, but nasty buggers none the less." Tip prepares his arrow as the food is thrown toward the suspected rats.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Travix backs up one step.
Rats?.........I hate rats!
He holds his torch out in front of him like a weapon. He looks both uncomfortable and frightened as he awaits their reaction.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
As you get closer you see they are indeed rats, their bodies ranging from 2 to 2 1/2 feet long. Two scurry forward to grab the meat thrown their way. All of them seem skittish as the torches get closer and they rush back into the fissure in the wall. You do not see any others in the room though one set of eyes watches you from inside the cracked stone wall.
From the debris scattered around, this seems to have been a storeroom and laboratory in the past. You see several mortar and pestles, kettles, what was once rows of intact glass jars, tongs, wooden slabs, knives. What was once probably a glorious section of reference books is now either gone to line some creatures' nests or sodden, rotting lumps still resting on the shelves. Several empty, wooden buckets sit stacked right inside the doorway.
The dust on the floor shows the rats have had the run of the place. A few human-sized footprints run through the place but look like a search was made and then moved on.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Travix follows the human footprints around the floor, looking closely at any spot where they seem to have stopped.
We should avoid that vermin if we can. Let's find the damn plaque and get out of this place! I hate rats!

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Following the path of the footprints, you only notice there seems to be more of a mess made of the debris in spots where the footprints are concentrated. It looks like a fast, messy search was made of the room but nothing else of note.

Graela watches the rats while her companions search the room > if the rodents look like they are about to attack, she will warn them and attack.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Travix makes a quick search anyway, hoping to find what the group seeks.
I don't think this is the place. I don't see any evidence of a disturbance other than one set of footprints and it dosent seem that the person was in here very long.
If nothing sticks out as a good hiding place, the mage suggests the group move on down the hallway.
There was talk of a well from the bandits. Perhaps we are looking in the wrong place?
He takes a quick survey of the items in the room. If any of the junk lying around looks like it is still in decent shape, not like the books, he will take a closer look at it.

Re: chapter 2 - heirlooms
Of the scattered items throughout the room, nothing of much value seems salvageable in here. Though if the wall were fixed and the place cleaned up it could be a serviceable workroom again. Moving back out into the hall the group slowly moves further into the dark. One set of red eyes slowly follows as your group retreats from the room though it is careful to keep its distance and does not follow into the hall proper.
You see Barnaby stop at another intersection. The hall again branches to the left into darkness. It also continues forward and a faint flickering light comes into being from around a corner ahead. Barnaby flinches at the appearance of the light and then glances over his shoulder to see which direction you want him to go. No sound comes from either direction.

Tip:
Surprised to find a light in such a dismal place, Tip gestures with his bow that he is for investigating its source.
