chapter 1- just arriving

Tip:
"Careful there Salt. I like not the looks of this." He pets Methuselah more to comfort himself than the old mule.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Travix
Good plan Pete! I think we should get a little closer on the trail while you sneaks up ahead.
I don't want us to get to far away from each other in case things get ugly up there.
If this plan is agreeable, the group continues on ahead, staying quiet and out of sight. Once the source of the flames is found, we can stop and wait for our scout to do his thing.

Salt Peter splits away to the right to steal away into the underbrush while the rest of the party continues cautiously up the trail.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Graela, spear in hand, moves along up ahead, hoping silently they are not walking into an ambush.
Winter is coming...
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Tip proceeds cautiously with arrow nocked, wary of any potential foes.
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Salt Peter returns, emerging silently from the brush just a short distance from the rest of the party, and reports seeing a fort where the fires are coming from. The group advances along the trail where a bend to the right reveals the clearing.
You see a fort with a wooden palisade and guard towers along the perimeter- a fort which has seen better days. The trail leads into the clearing up to the fort and then continues along the west side of it and north, this entire stretch wider than the track you followed from town. A wooden structure sits a bit in front of the gate and consists of a room open to the south and a roof overhang on two sides. The front gate has been opened slightly and a man is removing a few burning arrows from the gate and nearby walls. A sentry in the tower just right of the gate and another further to the left on the southwest corner are alert and watching in multiple directions. Scattered plumes of smoke rise from behind the fort wall and the scene looks like the aftermath of a recent attack.

Tip:
Tip explains to the others, "I think it best we put away our weapons so as not to appear as foes." He does so himself, raises his hands so that they can be seen, and calls out to the man collecting the arrows, "Hello, my good sir! We come with supplies from Goat's Plum. What has happened here?"

Graela keeps her spear in hand, but leans on it in a relaxed way. She doesn't wish to provoke the men of the fort. "Hopefully they know we were coming," she says out of the corner of her mouth.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Travix is always amazed at the giant balls of such a little people. He slowly advances to backup Tip, his hands held out innocuously.
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
The two sentries and the man at the gate all pivot at the sound of the halfling's voice. Each man in the guard towers brings up a drawn bow while the man at the ground calls out to you, an edge to his voice, And the name of the one who sent you? The sentry on the right gives a low whistle back over his shoulder.
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
The bows lower and the three guards relax somewhat at the sound of a cheerful Hi! and an earnestly waving Hennoth. This is it, the young man explains to Salt.
The man at the gate waves you forward though still seems to be waiting for a response to who it was that sent you.
I take it the caravan came in. You have any trouble on the way here?

Tip:
Sensing the tension diffuse, Tip also relaxes and speaks up, "We were sent by good, Unburr. We bring supplies for the outpost. As for trouble on the road, well, yes, we did run into a small group of goblins. Fortunately for us, they were to involved in squabbling over a brace of rabitts to pay us any heed. I am Tip Briarberry, and you are?" Tip extends his hand to the guardsman.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Ah, Unburr. He smiles and nods but then scowls at the mention of goblins.
You shouldn't have run into anything coming from town as you did. Shaking his head, You come here at a bad time but we appreciate you making the trip. Best bring yourselves in, we can take care of the donkey while you report to Mom in the big house. I'm Simon.
The grin returns as he nods at Hennoth. But I guess you were safe as can be being escorted by Hennoth here. The boy beams with pride at this and starts toward the gate.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Graela follows her companions into the fort. "Who's Mom?"
Winter is coming...
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Mom's head of the outpost and the final word in the woods. She'll want to hear about those goblins.
Simon reaches for the reins of the donkey to lead him into the compound.
After walking through the gate your path immediately veers to the right and then widens into a broad courtyard. Around you you see what must have been a fine fort in the past. What has obviously seen better days (even before the fires) looks to have been recently repurposed for its current inhabitants. A large barn to your left, one set of wide doors open near you, has the sound and smell of horses coming from within. Beyond the barn you see the edge of a corral. An open-face, roofed shack is to your right and ahead is a large two story structure. A stone well sits on the far side of the courtyard and some smaller buildings beyond that. One of those buildings still has flames on it and something beyond the large building is smoking. You can see people about to snuff the fire on one building.
Most of the guard towers you can see have sentries. A few people rush about with intent. A short, stocky woman with a wide-brimmed hat stands in the courtyard with hands on hips. She surveys the scene with severity, giving clipped orders that send people scurrying off.

Re: chapter 1- just arriving
Salt Peter looks with some disdain at the pace of the folk putting out the fire. This pace would never be tolerated on a ship, where fires were a grave danger. Even a lazy, foolish scallywag like Salt Peter had had the discipline of fire drills beaten into his head. "'Twars goblins, or 'ave ye got some other deviltry 'roud about? 'Ow long ago wars ther attack?"
Re: chapter 1- just arriving
The woman in the hat turns to face you as the group gets closer. Addressing Salt Peter, Was humans that attacked, chased off the last less than an hour ago. Why would you guess goblins?
She has a steely look and she eyes each one of you though she does throw a quick wink Hennoth's direction.

Tip:
Tip looks about the place, feeling a little uncertain and perturbed. He musters up his courage and steps forward, "Hello, ma'am. I'm Tip Briarberry." He thrusts out his hand to make her acquaintance. "We encountered a small group of goblins out on the road, and we assumed their kind was responsible for this," he gestures toward the burned-out buildings. "What happened? Can we be of assistance?"

Travix slaps Hennoth on the back lightly. Looks like you are a hero around here too, eh boy? And a hit with the ladies too, no less. Very nice!
He produces a hand for Mom to shake if she does that kind of thing.
Good day, maam! I am called Travix. Do tell us what has happened here and where we might be of the most service to help with the clean up, my dear woman.
