They draw closer.

He can hear their panting, their incessant yapping and yammering, their all too human barking laughter. He spares no glance behind, knowing it will not be long before their slavering muzzles close upon his flesh.

Ahead, through a break in the forest, he spots a crumbling wall, some long forgotten masonry now given over to the ravages of nature and time. He heaves himself up and scrambles over the collapsing rampart, landing on what looks to be the grounds of an old monastery.

The ravenous dogmen will scale the wall themselves in mere moments. He has to act quickly.

Frantically, he scans the area and spies a large building to the left, the squatting remains of a weathered temple. There he can at least make a stand to die like a man, to die like the soldier he is.

Rushing into the temple, he takes cover behind the large altar on the far side of the room and presses his back against the cold stone. As he readies his bow, he is surprised to find that the altar slides forward to reveal a set of moldy, stone stairs leading down into darkness.

The dogmen cautiously stalk into the temple and fan out to flank their prey. Severely outnumbered, Abijah Dun knows his only hope is to plunge into the darkness below. He gulps a lungful of air and descends.

There is a noticeable drop in temperature as the party eases their way down the lengthy flight of stairs and into the bowels of the monastery. Osprey runs his hands along the walls in search of secret doors but notices nothing out of the ordinary.

After about 40’ the stairs end, and the group faces an open door up ahead. Before anyone can investigate what lies beyond, pounding footsteps are heard from the top of the stairs.

A tall man, bearing a scar that runs the length of his face, appears at the top of the landing. He rushes down the stairs toward the party.

In pursuit, is a pack of six voracious gnolls.

Actions?!
The party is gathered at the bottom of the stairs. Due to the narrow confines of the staircase, only two party members at a time will be able to engage in hand-to-hand combat. Those with missile weapons can attack freely.

Abijah Dun skids to a stop in front of the party and spins on his heel to face the gnolls. Over his shoulder, he calls to the party, "Friend? Or foe? You will fight?"
If there is sufficient distance, he will nock an arrow and fire at the gnolls.
Short Bow: [1d20] = 6; Damage: [1d6] = 1
Not exactly a propitious first roll, there, Abijah.

Kragg the dwarf nods at the newcomer "Aye we'll fight and so far them gnolls are the only foes I see." then drawing his scimitar and putting dagger away the dwarf prepares for a fight looking for a spot off in the shadows to prepare an ambush on the gnolls.

Yon casts light on the lead gnoll's eyes, hoping he'll stop up the rest, at least for a bit, in his blindness.

Hexalon pulls back into the chamber daggers bared. Does anyone know the gnollish word for sleep at all, hmmmm yes yes yes? the little rainbow robed halfling calls to the others. "Here you flea ridden mutts, get lost before you are undone!" he calls out in goblin, looking to see if any sign of the creatures understanding him. If any of the gnolls break through the others he will throw two daggers at the nearest one to him.

Wil quickly focuses on this new enemy and accepts the surprise of a new ally. He glides back to the rear as the fighters up front take the first charge. He is ready to step in and do his duty as needed. He keeps guard to the rear until called upon....

Osprey

In gnollish, Osprey barks out authoritatively: No time for petty squabbling! Everyone stop this nonsense! You did good chasing the vermin down here, brothers. Leave him to us and continue to patrol the perimeter! The master will be told of your diligence. And Yeenoghu be praised with blood of the weak. Always. He raises his bow over his head in a fierce salute.

He is hoping this ruse will work. If not, next round predicts arrows. If the gnolls pause in their pursuit and/or attack he will quietly hiss for the party to stop the attack.

In Pursuit of Prey: Round 1

The band of gnolls gathers on the landing. Their yelping and yammering escalates as the prospect of more prey sends them into a wild frenzy.

Abijah bends his bow and fires an arrow that harmlessly clatters off the stone walls, while Yon conjures divine blessings in an attempt to blind the closest gnoll. The creature’s eyes grow brightly luminous as it paws helplessly at its snout and howls with rage and frustration.

Morris lobs a flask of oil at the mongrels, and it shatters about 10 feet away from the pack, dousing the stairs and walls with combustible liquid. Mjulius, please deduct a vial of oil from your character sheet.

Amidst the cacophonous yattering and guttural barking, the largest of the gnolls steps forward in response to Osprey's words.

“The colorful half-man should take care to tame his tongue,” he directs a cruel paw indicating Hex. “Be you the leader of this band, elf? All of the Brotherhood bear the mark. Where be yours?” He presents his shoulder branded with a familiar sign:

Kragg stays hidden as best he can in any shadows at the bottom of the stairs off to the right side. referring to the map.

Abijah Dun tenses when he hears a voice calling in dog-language to the gnolls, but takes heart in the fact that the strangers he ran into are indeed attacking. He quickly fires another arrow.
Short Bow: [1d20] = 13; Damage: [1d6] = 4
My AD&D is a little rusty. When it says that bows have a "fire rate" of 2, does that mean one can fire them twice a round?

Yes, you are right. You can attack 2x per round with a bow. You can go ahead and add another roll to your post if you like.

Osprey smiles appreciatively at the gnoll's words and nods knowingly. My mark is right where it should be, he begins in a mild tone. And no underling asks to see it! Mind your rank, soldier! His voice suddenly becomes a harsh admonition. Your insolence is bad enough. But you seek to undermine me in front of my squad?! Try that again and I'll be wearing your paws! A hand gestures to the rest of the party. You see how these louts are already undisciplined. I don't need you making it worse. Back to the perimeter with you and I'll forget the lapse. You may have time to spare but our mission makes time precious. Now go!

Well, at least I'm wasting arrows at a faster rate.

Hex looks from the elf spellblade to the scary two legged hounds trying to make out if they understood his goblin. He will take a step back behind someone taller and flex his fingers, ready to cast a spell upon the dogmen if necessary. Throwing his long blonde topknot of hair over his shoulder the multi-coloured minor trickster narrows his eyes and waits with a heightened sense of awareness for danger. If they even show any signs of attacking he will begin his hypnotism incantation.
Greys Campaign.

Morris, temporarily discomfitted that his flask of oil sailed wide, retrieves a dart and flings it at the gnolls.

Gnoll Round 2.jpg
Gnoll Round 2.jpg (85.89 KiB) Viewed 795 times
Abijah releases another arrow that yet again fails to find its mark. Morris flings a dart that lodges in the lead gnoll’s thigh, and the brutish beast brushes the barb away as if it were an annoying insect.

The light-blinded gnoll scrabbles away from the landing, screaming and clawing its way back up the stairs from whence it came.

Seeing the gnolls prepare their bows, Hex begins to recite his hypnotism incantation. He targets the pack leader and begins his illusionary magicks; however, the dogman seems to fend off the halfling's hypnotic influence.

"Tonight we dine on man-flesh!" the lead gnoll snarls as he and his companions raise their bows and commence with raining arrows down upon the party.

Two wicked barbs fly toward Kragg. One breaks against the wall while the other buries itself in the dwarf’s side. (-6 HP)

Osprey takes an arrow to the shoulder (-4 HP), Wil is grazed in the leg (-1 HP), and Hexlon is hit in the arm. (-4 HP)

Wil cringes slightly at the wound, more from his own mistake of allowing himself to be in range. However, he quickly consoles himself in the fact that he performed his duty to the good of the team by allowing himself to be a target instead of another comrade.

OOC: As a Monk, did Wil get a chance to make a save vs. petrify to avoid the normal missile that inflicted some damage?

Yes, please go ahead and make the roll to Save. I will amend the post to reflect his dodge if successful. Thanks!
