Chapter 6: Unhallowed Halls

After Phineas gives word that the area is secure, Aric kicks open the double doors, and a resounding echo fills the long chamber that stretches out before the party.

Dust swirls, momentarily obscuring what lies beyond, and both sides of the room are lined with what appear to be human-shaped figures. What seems like long minutes pass before the dust settles, and the indiscernible forms are recognized as rows of statues.

The flickering of torch and candle light plays havoc with the shadows, seemingly animating the faces of the saintly statuary. Their stern, grim visages stare accusingly down at the party as if they were interlopers. A few of the statues lie broken and shattered on the floor, having toppled from their plinths.

The party's light sources stop short after about 30' and are unable to reveal what lies on the other end of the lengthy chamber. Osprey stands behind those who first enter, trying to penetrate the gloom; however, his elven darkvision is negated by the offending light.

Yon, hearing the boom, returns to the rest of the group and stares. He tries to remember who, if anyone, the statues represent.

Kragg sheathes his sword and keeps a hand on the hilt walking a bit further into the room looking warily at the statues. "Anyone know who these statues represent?"

"Oo, statues! Most likely saints of the deity, or the most pious monks or leaders of the order throughout the centuries. If it is safe we should enter and explore further yes yes yes!" Hex says with renewed enthusiasm. He will maintain his position at the threshold with the candles burning in the candelabra lighting the surroundings

Osprey whispers, Of course it's safe. There are only statues- what could go wrong? A malicious chuckle and then he is silent as he stalks into the room and carefully investigates.

Aric, reaver

The barbarian kneels down and inspects the floor for any tracks in the dust.

Kragg, Aric, Phineas, and Osprey move beyond the threshold to further inspect the newly discovered room. Kragg finds the chamber to be quite impressive, considering it is the work of Men. The ribbed, vaulted ceiling rises high into the darkness and disappears beyond the comfort of the party’s light.

Before proceeding any further, Aric crouches to inspect the dusty tiles for tracks; he notices nothing indicating traffic.

The rows of statues run the length of the avenue-like chamber, stretching out into the gloom. Conversation concerning the statuary sends echoes bouncing off of the walls, and the monuments’ identities remain a mystery. Hex, Yon, and Wil infer that the sculptures were most likely created to represent former saints and priests of the order.

Wil takes the left hand side and studies the statues as they go for any secret places...

Hex inspects the doors next to him, to see if they can be locked from the outside or are spring loaded etc. If not he will enter with the candelabra and move to read any inscription on the base of the nearest statue.

Following Wil's lead, Osprey will check the right side row of statues for secret compartments and passages. He also looks for anything that might be a trigger for initiating activity or a trap. Still fresh in his mind is the struggle with the statue from the chapel.

Aric walks forward 30' so the torchlight extends further to the other end of the room.

P.T. Codswallop, halfling impresario:

Phineas sized up the stone saints, "What a jocund crew!" he laughed.

Then he padded softly behind the others as they advanced on the darkness.

The adventurers make their way down the length of the chamber, carefully watching for anything of interest. Aric moves down the center aisle, Wil takes to the left side, Osprey scouts to the right, and Phineaes treads lightly behind.

Hex pauses to ensure the door is secure before venturing beyond the threshold. He then makes his way to the nearest plinth where he is joined by Kragg. The halfling and dwarf stop to inspect the monuments, finding them inscribed with names that apparently correspond with their respective saints. Saint Caldin - The Lightbringer, Saint Isthil - The Leafspeaker, and Saint Thos of the Arch are just a few such names learned.

Aric's torchlight finally reaches the far end of the room, revealing a raised altar standing upon a 2’ high dais. Intricate scrollwork covers its front and sides. Upon the altar is an offertory bowl, an incense burner, and a bronze idol of Lunia.

Four silver candlesticks sit at each corner of the altar, covered in dried wax, and housing half-burnt candles. In the center of the altar there is a shallow, bowl-like indentation filled with a clear, viscous-looking substance.

After assessing the statues and nooks on the left-hand side of the chamber, Wil finds nothing but cobwebs, dust, and debris.

Osprey completes his inspection of the rows of statues to the right, and at the base of the wall behind the last statue, he notices a 2’x3’ fissure. The opening does not appear to be man-made, and a soft, yellow glow emanates from within its recesses.

Yon approaches the altar reverently and looks at it closely, trying to see what is in the depression.

Kragg "I've to refer to you holy men for ideas what to do at this altar other than that I've searched the statues and found naught but names to the faces. Guess if it does not befoul the altar I can search it for hidden hidey holes if that is alright?" the dwarf waits permission before searching the altar for secret compartments.

Osprey gestures to others to come see his discovery. Without getting too close to the fissure's entrance he tries to see what is further inside it.

P.T. Codswallop, halfling impresario:

Phineas comes at Osprey's words and brashly proceeds past the cautious elf to the mouth of the crevice. Seeing what could be the reflected light of shimmering monks' gold, he greedily peers in. If he sees no danger, the half-pint huckster enters!

Aric waits for Kragg to check the altar for traps before approaching.

He gets distracted by the light of Osprey's crevice and moves to investigate.
