A Night of Unrest – Round Three

Even though Kragg is heavily injured, the stout dwarf continues to hold his ground. He wields his scimitar in a deadly arc, but he fails to reach his opponent.

Yon stands renewed after receiving aid from his fellow cleric. The priest concentrates on the bugbear facing Kragg, closes his eyes, and mutters a prayer to the Father of Light. A radiant glow slowly spreads from his outstretched hands, banishing the shadows of the darkened clearing. The tranquil light grows in its brilliance, and with a blinding flash, it suddenly appears right before the bridge of the bugbear's nose. The hideous creature screams in outrage as it paws blindly at its eyes with gnarled claws.

Brother Wil uses the momentum from his previous attack to gracefully flow into another deadly movement. The monk slams a well-placed elbow into the blind bugbear's throat, and the punishing blow effectively crushes its windpipe. The thing gurgles through its crushed larynx, stumbles for a few paces, and falls heavily to the forest floor.

Taking up his flail to attack the last remaining bugbear, Luna swings with all his might, but he is unable to connect with the vile beast.

Phineas adds another arrow into the back of the bugbear, and as it claws and scrabbles to remove the shafts, Favin strikes out with his mace. The cleric of Lunia barely nicks the brute.

As the battle unfolds, Osprey reaches into his belt pouch and withdraws a pinch of sand, a rose petal, and a live cricket. He rubs the sand between this thumb and index finger, sprinkling it upon the ground before him. He then proceeds to wrap the cricket in the rose petal and places them both under his tongue. The elf's voice takes on a somnolent quality as he utters eldritch, arcane magicks used to send one’s enemies into a bewitched slumber. The final bugbear suddenly collapses like a bag of stones dropped into a lake.

Hex continues to fire daggers down at the mad hound, and one of the halfling’s stilettos strikes the dog squarely in the side. It quickly turns to bite at the dagger protruding from its flank, and with a series of shrill yelps, it rushes off into the forest with its tail between its legs.

In the aftermath of the skirmish, the group takes inventory of their wounded and assesses their situation.

With all the conjuring of magicks, Aric is very unsettled. The barbarian stands apart from the others, glowering at the priests and the elf with smoldering eyes beneath a heavy brow.

Duran approaches the bleeding and battered Kragg, “Here my friend. Allow Lunia to assuage your pain.” The cleric begins to recite a prayer in a sing-song voice. The dwarf's wounds remain, but at least they appear to have stopped bleeding (1 HP healed).

Initiative: Party [1d6] = 2 vs Monster [1d6] = 1 Party wins

Bugbear Save vs Light Spell (16): [1d20] = 11 Fail

Favin Attack with Mace: [1d20] = 17; Damage: S/M [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4; L [1d6] = 1 Hit

Cure Light Wounds: [1d8] = 1 Sorry, Kragg!

Missile Count:

Phineas fired six arrows; he is able to retrieve three.

Hex threw four daggers and gets back 3 because he was only throwing a short distance. The daggers would still be at the foot of the tree. Only one dagger is lost because it was lodged in the dog’s side, and it ran off.

Kragg summons up all of his rage and dwarf fighting prowess and slashes out at the nearest bugbear. Taking his revenge and frustrations out on the nearest sleeping bugbear.
Scimitar [1d20] = 20 to hit [1d8] = 5 dmg
 :D damn straight. Albeit too late :(

The sleeping bugbear is summarily decapitaed by the dwarf's scimitar. Its head rolls a few feet through the dry leaves, then comes to a stop at the base of a tree.

No, the two dogs ran off, two of the bugbears were killed in the battle, and Kragg decapitaed the last bugbear that was under the Sleep spell.

Trusty Yon, Human Cleric

Yon looks around at the others. He feels different. Something happened to him while he was in the light, some purpose assigned to him, but it was all slipping away now, like a dream. Yet... something remained. A mere feeling. He would not question it. He looked at the mace in his hand, turning it over once, then cast it aside into the undergrowth. Reaching down, he pried the club from the dead bugbear's hand, the one he had blinded with the divine light. "This will be my weapon now," he said to no one in particular. "The Lord of Light decrees it. To remind me of this day." He hung the club on his belt, then sniffed the air. "This will be my weapon as soon as I clean it up a bit... it smells like bugbear."

Approaching Kragg he says "You look awful. Worse than me, and I was dead." He casts Cure Light Wounds.
Can you help me with this roll, DM?

The multi-hued halfling scrambles down out of the tree and retrieves three of his daggers. "That feral hound stole my dagger!" he exclaims indignantly as he wipes the others on the forest grass and slips them back into their scabbards.

"Is everyone alright? By Jove that was thrilling eh, yes yes yes" he chuckles, wiping the sweat from his brow.

He will summarily inspect the creatures for any hidden treasure they may have on their persons, and if they have some daggers he will take one back.

"Now what to with the bodies. It is a shame you sliced that ones head off Kragg, it could of told us how far off its lair was. I am guessing it's not too far. Do these creatures like the light of day I wonders, MMm indeedy?" he says running his small hands through the dead creatures pockets.

Kragg "Shame? Really you think the dog was gonna talk? You actually think we would survive in a lair of them? Two of us were dead or nearly dead I think that number woulda been higher had we done something that foolish. Better that it'd dead. I appreciate the healin Yon." the dwarf wipes the blood from his scimitar and re sheath's it, then starts searching the dead bugbear.

The halfling shakes his long topknot of golden hair.

"I could have .... persuaded it to tell us I think, I established a common language we understood and could have hypnotised the truth out of it. It was already sleeping after all, yes it was!" the halfling mumbles absently.

"Still nothing to be done about it now, no no no, it's quite dead, to be sure!" Hex stands and brushes off his robes after searching for goodies.

Osprey Palearctic, elven fighter/magic-user

Osprey pauses to take a quick head count to ensure everyone is still alive then starts to walk out of the clearing toward where the horses were tethered.

I'm going to check on the horses.

Scanning the darkness and listening for any signs of lingering danger as he walks, Osprey ponders this night's events. This does not bode well for our adventure. We have several wounded before we even enter the monastery and I must try and regain my spell before the dangers really begin. The escaped dog could lead others back to us. We'll likely be safer to move camp now.

Kragg "Yeah I made sure of it. Sometimes it's kill or be killed." the dwarf continues searching the dead foe.

Phineas T. Codswallop, impresario:

Phineas fired two arrows at the retreating hound, lest it lead more bugbears back here.

Phineas: Bow: To Hit: [1d20+3] = 19+3 = 22, damage: [1d6] = 3
Phineas: Bow: To Hit: [1d20+3] = 18+3 = 21, damage: [1d6] = 6

Dang! :D

Then the miniature, mustachioed man of might emerged from the shadows with another arrow nocked in his trickshot bow. "Stupendous. Well done, everyone."

Once he confirmed there were no dead, Phineas shouldered his bow and searched the bugbear corpses as he concurred with his fellow halfling. "It IS a regrettable shame none were captured alive. People would have willingly separated themselves from their hard-earned cash to see such creatures up close! One must seize business opportunities whenever they present themselves."

Then he lifted and appraised one severed head, wondering how it would look stuffed and mounted over a fireplace mantle.

Aric, savage

Aric watches as the priests heal the wounds of the party members. He understands their source of power more than that of wizards. The barbarian isn't happy with his sword skill this fight. He waits until the clerics leave then offers first aid to the injured, should there be any left.

The ostentatious Phineas turns to fire two arrows at the retreating hound. Both missiles strike solidly, sending the mongrel's corpse head over heels into the underbrush.

Osprey leaves off to check on the horses. They are obviously frightened, and on the rear leg of one, he finds a small bite wound from one of the hounds. It looks to be nothing serious as long as it is bandaged and tended to.

Hex, Kragg, and Phineas stoop down to examine the bodies of the bugbears. They notice that they all wear red face paint and gruesome "jewelry" (severed fingers, toes, and ears strung on leather thongs, etc.); however, further inspection reveals something else of interest. They all share an identical crudely drawn tattoo on their right bicep:

Phineas lifts the severed bugbear head and briefly entertains the possibility of turning it into a trophy. Its offending smell quickly makes him think otherwise. It once belonged to the largest of the creatures, what he assumes to be the leader, and it wears a golden nose ring in bull-like fashion that looks like it might fetch about 20 gp.

All of the bugbears carry belt pouches or sacks, and within is a total of 48 cp, 31 sp, 25 ep, 15 gp, a rat skull, an old, rusty war medal, and to Hex and Phineas’ horror, what appears to be the scalped hair from a halfling’s foot.

Aric gathers some plants that he recognizes for their medicinal properties and applies the leaves to the wounds of Luna, Kragg, and Yon (each are healed 1 HP).

Osprey Palearctic, elven fighter/magic-user

Osprey first soothes the horses then cleans and bandages the wounded horse's leg. Upon returning to the clearing he observes this tattoo on the fallen raiders. He sketches the design with charcoal on a piece of parchment and tucks this away.

Kragg walks over to a nearby tree and looks for a branch or sapling good enough to work as a spear/spike tries to break it off if none is easily broke he will begin sharpening one to put the severed head on. Once one is sharpened enough he takes the severed bugbear head and sticks it on the makeshift steak/spear and sticks the other end into the ground or if it is a sapling leaves it rooted into the ground. Looking at his work he says "That aught to do as a warning should others try that again."

The halfling prestigidator will gather and try and clean off the coinage before dishing it out in equal measures.

At the sight of the scalp he recoils and throws up, careful to avoid his long top knot and robes in the process.

"Those vile beasts!" he exclaims quietly, his face pale.

The halfling will begin to look at the tracks that brought the massive creatures to the company's camp site. Is there a clear track to follow?

The bugbears were extremely stealthy in their pursuit, and they left no trail to be followed.
