The letter is penned in a flowing script which reads:

Greetings,

I, Father Halbrick, in service of Our Celestial Mother, Lunia, request the honour of your group’s presence at the Church of Lunia upon the sounding of the 10th morning bell on Leafday (which is today).

Our order is in dire need of your unique prowess and expertise. Should you elect to heed the call of this summons and agree to certain terms to be discussed upon your arrival, you will be very handsomely rewarded.

Sincerely,

Father Halbrick, High Priest of the Church of Lunia

Before dawn Yon arose to greet the sun as is his daily ritual. As the others entered the common room from the stairs, Yon came back inside from the front door.

Over his meal he too ponders the possible adventure ahead. When the letter is read aloud (if it isn't then he will then do so) he waits to see what the groups consensus is. He frowns at Hexalon's initial impression thinking of his own meagre belongings. Doing a task that needs doing and doing it well is its own reward so sayeth the Lord of Light. Friend Hexalon let greed not spoil your path to eternal glory, embrace the greater good.

Kragg "You must have had some rich churches as from what I remember they usually donate everything to their deities and the poor and down trodden. Nope a church aint ever a target for thieves from me experience. Besides who would want to invoke the wrath of a god by stealing from their clergy? Not this dwarf. I am all for helping them though. Never a bad thing to earn a good reputation you know." the dwarf winks to Hexalon then goes back to eating his morning feast meats.

Brother Wil nods in agreement at Yon's comments on integrity. Inquisitively he asks, "Tell me Yon, have you happened across this church mentioned in the writ? Any of you heard rumor per chance?"

Osprey Palearctic, elven fighter/magic-user

This letter comes the morning after this small town tavern was filled with stories of that monastery...stories directed at us. I think we have one more tale to hear. I believe we should meet with them at the tenth morning bell.

Yon shrugs I must confess Brother Wil that I am not very familiar with the Church of Lunia. It is clear enough that their faith is based on the Moon but I know little else of substance. I find it odd that a high priest need turn to a random band of adventures for help but he shrugs again it couldn't hurt to learn more.

As the group is enjoying their meal and discussing their future plans, Iram enters the room to clear some plates, "Excuse me, kind sirs. I hope your breakfast is to your liking." He looks particularly at Hexalon and Kragg as they continue to munch on bacon and sausage. "I don't mean to pry, but I couldn't help but overhear your discussion. I can tell you one thing about Father Halbrick. He is a truly fine and wonderful man. He even cured me of the coughing sickness a few winters back, but alas, he now succumbs to an illness of his own, and I fear that he will soon be reunited with Lunia.

I am a member of his congregation, as are most of us here in Silington, and if the church needs your help, I am sure it is for a good reason. The church is just a little north of here, right on the outskirts of town about 100 yards past the windmill. Again, I apologize if I have intruded, and I didn't mean to overstep my bounds. Just trying to help out.

Oh, and thank you for staying at The Cat. I hope you will consider visiting us again soon!"
He bows with a flourish and returns to the kitchens.

All in agreement to answering the letter's summons, the group prepares their things, takes leave of the inn, and follows Iram’s directions to the Church of Lunia.

The Church of Lunia is a modest one-story stone structure, and the only truly notable feature about the place is that there are two large stained-glass windows set into its facade. You recognize the same symbol that was on the seal of the letter you received etched into the stone lintel above the church's entrance. A few other small buildings surround the church, along with a small graveyard. All about the grounds, you notice a significant number of cats lounging and loitering in the shade.

A rather tall man with a shaved head greets you at the front steps of the church. He is dressed in light blue robes with the silhouettes of cats and moons stitched into the cuffs and collar. He smiles politely and introduces himself as Favin of the Brotherhood of Lunia.

Kragg extends his hand then quickly retracts it wiping the bacon and sausage grease from it on a piece of cloth that looks as if it was cut from his clothing then reaches out to shake the priests hand "Kragg Steelybeard at your service sir. Glad to aid you."

The reaver kneels and tries to pet one of the many cats. He expects it to react like Ilsa.

He just wants gold, even if he has to deal with Lunatics to get it.

It seems that Aric's attempts at affection are finally reciprocated, at least on some level, as one of the cats lifts its head to receive the barbarian's offer. It purrs loudly and entwines itself about the giant's tree-stump legs.

Brother Favin listens to the group's questions and looks slightly embarrassed by their accolades, "Well met one and all, and thank you for answering our summons; however, I am afraid you are mistaken. I am not the Father here; that would be Father Halbrick. I am but a lowly disciple." He clears his throat somewhat nervously and turns to Osprey, "Yes, Master Osprey, in regards to my clandestine actions last evening, I hope you do not take offense. It was necessary to remain in the shadows, for what is to be asked of you must remain secret for now. I know you all have many questions, so if you will please follow me, I will escort you to His Eminence at once.”

Favin leads you into a building at the back of the church that opens into a long hallway lined with doors. At the end of the hallway, he stops at a door, knocks lightly before entering, and announces the arrival of your group.

The room is austerely furnished, and lying in a small four-post bed, propped up by several pillows, is an extremely elderly man being attended to by a few priests. He is obviously in very poor health as he speaks to your group between hacking coughs, “Hello, I am Father Halbrick. Welcome, and thank you for answering our summons. I have asked you here to address a matter of great importance. Our order has lost a religious artifact to the darkness that now envelops the Dimwater Monastery. This sacred item is a relic of tremendous power known as the Crook of St. Othin, and if it falls into the wrong hands, the results could be catastrophic for the world as a whole. The crook was last known to be buried within the crypt of St. Othin somewhere deep below the old monastery.” He abruptly stops speaking as a series of coughs wrack his body, and one of the attending priests offers him a cup of water.

He drinks deeply from the cup and apologizes for the interruption before continuing on in his labored breath, “Dimwater Monastery was built over 100 years ago in dedication to Lunia, goddess of the moon, and the monastery is named after the fact that it is nestled on the banks of the Dimwater River roughly 20 miles away to the northeast.

Under the benevolent guidance of St. Othin, Dimwater Monastery prospered and flourished for many years, serving the surrounding communities by providing healing for the sick and ailing and alms for the poor and destitute; however, about 50 years ago, St. Othin abruptly passed away under mysterious circumstances. He was replaced by the high priest, Ulthain, a vile and wicked man who led the monastery into ruin and corruption after turning away from the light of Lunia and polluting the ideals of the church.

One fateful evening, Ulthain and his supporters brutally murdered all of the followers of Lunia living in the monastery. They usurped the grounds to serve the purposes of their own twisted serpent god, Sai’reth; however, Ulthain and his cult eventually brought about their own demise after performing unspeakable rituals that unleashed abominations they were unable to control or contain.”

Again, Father Halbrick is suddenly seized by a violent coughing fit, and he clutches at his chest with arthritic hands. His coughing subsides after a moment, and he continues on in his strained and raspy voice “Following this catastrophe, the monastery fell into complete ruin, and it has remained abandoned ever since. The place has been shunned for years as a reputed haunt of foul creatures that lurk among the shadows; however, passing merchant caravans and local hunters have recently reported seeing strange lights at night and hearing eerie noises coming from within its walls. About a month ago, we enlisted the services of another group of explorers to venture forth and retrieve the crook, but we have not seen or heard from them since their departure.

If you agree to help us recover the crook, you will be generously rewarded. Each of you will receive 500 gold pieces, and with the exception of the crook, you may keep whatever treasure you find in the damned place.”
He stops speaking, looks at each of you in turn, and gravely asks, “Will you embark on the journey to Dimwater Monastery and help reclaim our sacred artifact?”

Hexalon nods in agreement wide eyed and volunteers to go also.

A puzzled frown crosses his face. "It is said you are powerful, and there must surely be more powerful clerics amongst your staff. If it's so dire that your order needs this relic, why trust it to a bunch of green adventures and not send your more able and seasoned servants to retrieve it?" the halfling asks innocently.
