Hack and Slash Compendium 2 - Now Available

#1 Post by Alethan »

If you've never visited Hack and Slash, then you should. And, if you value good gaming information, you'll probably quickly subscribe to Courtney's blog, like I did. He's an excellent writer and does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of RP gaming.

He also writes a gross (as in "large") amount of stuff that is helpful to other GMs/DMs. If you like random tables, you'll love his stuff.

Anyway, he took the time and effort to compile a bunch of his tables and gaming aids into a Compendium. It's 106 pages of highly useful information. For the next few days, you can download it (Pay What You Want @ RPG.net) or print it out (perfect bound at Hulu) for an extremely reasonable price. It will go up after that to just a reasonable price, which is completely worth it for the information you get.

There's a lot in there:

Things players can spend money on!
Hotlinked/Bookmarked .pdf!
Weights and capacities for the transportation of valuable goods!
Public domain illustrations!
Hundreds of unique and interesting items!
The secret to creating interesting treasure!
Essays by John Bell of the Retired Adventurer, Arnold Kemp of Goblin Punch, and Tom Fitzgerald of Middenmurk!
Random generation of treasure, including books, magical books, and book traps!
Expanded gemstone descriptions!
Perfect Bound (Coil Bound for Patreons)
Costs 0$ for a limited time! Affordable print copy available.
So... yeah, go there. Buy it. Pay a little and help support cancer research because cancer fucking sucks. Or pay a lot and stick cancer in the eye with a dull stick. And ramp up your game while you're at it.

Seriously, this is something anyone who runs a game should consider owning.

I really, really love the tables and aids that Courtney puts together, and in general his blog is a great read, except when he gets overly up in arms about the Quantum Ogre--it's a bit ideological for my tastes then :)

But agreed, he is well worth supporting, generates amazing material, and of course cancer (BOO).

Heh. When I find a blogger spends too much time not following Wheaton's Law (that Alexander gent is a fine example of this), I don't spend any time reading their stuff, even if they otherwise have good things to say. Don't have any time or desire for that sort of people in my life.

I think Courtney's intrusions are pretty minimal and easily ignored.

And I certainly don't blindly agree with his approach to gaming. But he has a LOT of useful information he offers up freely.

Absolutely--they don't really get in the way, and tend to be quarantined within individual blog-posts. I used to have a LOT of interactions with him in various venues and he would get quite strident at times, but happily it doesn't really manifest in his writing all that much. And agreed--he creates a lot of great stuff.

I think he's got a Patreon link on the site--just follow that. If the link's gone, he's not currently looking for patrons or has the support he needs for his current plans.

Got mine today. It's digest size (thought it would be full page size), but that's actually better, IMO. I've read a few articles and so far it's quite good. Thanks for the tip.
