Guidelines

#1 Post by winemaker81 »

The following is a synopsis of our Guidelines on the & Magazine web site.

http://www.and-mag.com/submissions/guid ... templates/

Guidelines and Templates

We welcome your art, letters, creatures, spells, items, and adventure seeds. Send them to: submissions@and-mag.com.

We reserve the right to copy edit submissions for length, grammar, or content.

Templates are available on the website (see above URL). Please use them, it will reduce the reformatting necessary.

Important Note 1: The & Publishing Group is a zero profit group. No one makes a dime from this endeavor. We are not a paying market. We do not sell our PDFs nor do we pay for submissions — this is free support for the D&D Community.

If, in the future, we sell printed copies of our material, the markup on items will be token and any funds received will be used to support the site and for promotional materials.

Important Note 2: We publish only first run material. If your article has been published in other places (printed, PDF, or online magazines) we will not publish it. Why not? The article is already published so it’s not a good use of our magazine space.

Please note that a post in a forum is acceptable, due to the typically low visibility, e.g., only the members of that forum will have seen it. If you have questions, email us!

Important Note 3: Please DO NOT format your article in any multiple column format. All articles will be reformatted to the & Magazine standard. Anything special you do will need to be undone. Save everyone (including you) time and submit in a single column format. Thanks!

Writer’s Guidelines

The & Publishing Group publishes fantasy role-playing game articles, fiction, columns, and adventures for pre-3x Dungeons & DragonsTM and Advanced Dungeons & DragonsTM games as its primary focus. This includes other old school variants like OSRIC, Labyrinth Lord, etc. As a secondary effort some 3x and later conversions may be published to provide a secondary market for the publication, but any article submitted for those systems as their main focus will be rejected. Other game systems are not within our area of interest.

Works may be submitted in any of the following formats:
  • Microsoft Word (doc or docx)
  • RTF
  • OpenOffice or LibreOffice
  • Text file with headings indicated
No submissions will be accepted in non-digital formats unless there is some extreme mitigating reason for it.

Submit articles and other works in single spaced format with a cover page. On the cover page include a suggested article title, your name, and your email address. if you wish to be credited with a pseudonym, please provide that as well.

All works should be well proofed before submission. Additional proofing takes place on our end, but this is polishing. Titles sent with articles are just suggestions, and we reserve the right to change the title to fit the issue’s theme, or for other reasons.

For web addresses, submit the entire address, including all of the http and www data so we can create a hyperlink.

Articles: Articles are generally between 1,000 and 4,000 words, with the upper end of that for feature articles. Articles are generally 8 pages (our format) or less. On occasion we do publish longer articles, but this is an exception.

Articles must deal with some aspect of life in the AD&D or D&D fantasy realm or the mechanics of supported systems. Some areas to explore are modern fixtures of life translated to a magic-using environment, studies of how to build a fantasy gaming world, and articles dealing with game systems.

Sidebars are between 250 to 500 words. Split out tangential information you want to deal with in an article into a sidebar.

Fiction: Short stories are works of 7,500 words or less. We do not currently publish longer works of any sort.

Fiction should deal with Fantasy settings or events that happen in such settings. Good fiction involves change to a character or the character’s world. Please have a point in the story, some change or development you want to explore. This may be as simple as a spell caster learning something intriguing about a spell, characters discovering new creatures, or the way different character classes interact, so it doesn’t have to be earth shattering change.

& Magazine is a PG oriented publication, so try to keep things suitable for PG-13 or higher audiences to a minimum. The use of profanity, sexual themes, and extreme violence should be there to support the story, not as the focus of the tale. We will not accept any story that falls into the category of erotica, BDSM, or torture as their main theme.

Columns: The target for a column is 1,000 words, roughly 1 to 4 pages (our format). Shorter and longer columns may be returned for modification. Each column should have a clearly defined topic and should follow a solid essay format – tell us what you’re going to tell us, tell us, then tell us what you told us.

Adventures: Adventures may be game specific or game independent. Length should be 1 to 8 pages (our format). Longer adventures may be returned for rework by the author.

Monsters: Submit using the monster template, or use the TSR format of the edition you are writing for.

Spells: Submit spells in the format of the AD&D Player’s Handbook, or the TSR format of the edition you are writing for.

Mundane and Magic Items: For mundane items include a standard cost. For magic items, including a gold piece value and experience point value.

Shops, Businesses, and Residences: Please use the Shop Template file in the files section for shops. This format covers the information well. In the exterior description be verbose on how the building looks and include the grounds if any. For interior descriptions include the number of rooms, descriptions of the rooms, and the quality and quantity of fixtures and furnishings. Residences use a stripped down format, but be verbose on descriptive detail, and if you can include a map, all the better. Examples are in the text for different types of buildings.
Artist’s Guidelines

Artwork may be submitted in PNG, JPG, GIF, or EPS formats. With the graphic include the artist’s name and email address, a description of what it is, and suggestions where the art may be. Other formats may be acceptable — please ask.

Please Note: & Magazine covers are commissioned and bid for by current staff/supplemental artists who have contributed to & in the past. We see that as a way of showcasing our regular artists in a larger format as a way of thanking them for their continued support. & Magazine is purely volunteer, and artists and writers accept no payments, fees, or stipends for artwork or articles.

How do you become a “current staff/supplemental artist”?

Most interior art is commissioned for the article in which it is placed. The art director lists the articles and offers suggestions for art ideas, and the artists sign up for specific articles. We encourage creativity in the art work – the suggested ideas are exactly that – suggestions to give artists a starting point. To be considered, contact the art director at artdirector@and-mag.com.

In addition we also accept miscellaneous art that may be used as filler or where it happens to match an article. Email submissions to the art director, including your name and a description of the art.

In answer to the above question – to become an & artist, contact the art director at artdirector@and-mag.com.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask. It’s preferable to find out before you start something than have to go back and edit it to the proper format later on. Incorrect formatting can cause rejection of the work until it’s formatted correctly – this is a volunteer effort, and folks aren’t getting paid to do editing, so taking care of the formatting details will help us to get the magazine out and with the highest quality possible. We look forward to your submissions. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
