Idea for organizing games

#1 Post by ToniXX »

As we get more and more active games here at these forums, the home page has become quite long. Some have noted that it's kind of become tedious to find the game(s) they're in. I've looked for modifications to the forum software that allow users to hide forums they don't want to see... in other words, show only games they're in. But no such thing seems to exist.

So, I'm suggesting that we organize the games by genre, instead of just one long list. Here's a suggested list of genres:
  • D&D (all editions, OSRIC, other D&D clones, etc...)
  • Other Fantasy (Ars Magica, Call of Cthulhu, Torchbearer, etc...)
  • Sci-Fi and Superhero (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc...)
  • Contemporary and Historical (James Bond or Top Secret to Vikings or Westerns)
  • Other genres
This would mean a little more clicking to get to your games, but since we have almost 60 active games, it seems the a little organization is needed.

Please post your thoughts on this idea here and thanks for helping make the USS a better place!

Great idea.

I'd separate Horror from Other Fantasy, Superhero from SciFi, and Contemporary from Historical.

It might encourage more games in these genres.

I think the categories are fine as you have them ToniXX. We don't have a whole lot of Horror or Superheroes, so putting them with Other Fantasy and Sci-Fi makes sense for right now, I think.

What do you think about splitting the D&D forum into "old school" (up to 2e) and "new school" (3e+) to cut down the size of the D&D board?

I'm torn...

It will clean up the first page, which is great.
It may be more difficult remembering to check each of the different games I'm in, since at least one is in a different genre.

Is there any way to highlight the forums we subscribe to? I know some forum sites have a separate icon for that. Maybe that would help identify and make the simple page scan easier?
Dandelion - female half-orc beautyqueen in training (The Lone City in the Wildlands) OSRIC
Halfpint - female halfling badgirl wannabe (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL
Mark'd - charismatic human fighter (Lab Lord- The North Marches) LL

I would love somehow to only see the games I'm involved with; they do this over on online-roleplaying.com & rpol.net

But, you could also clear out the list by archiving the 15 or so games that haven't had a post ranging from as far back as February to a few weeks ago. If a game hasn't had a post from the DM in 3-4 weeks...chances are it's a dead game. 8-)

Do you guys use "View your Posts" on the top right of the site? :)

I'd like to only be able to show games that I'm involved in, but I can't find a modification for this forum software that does that. Online-roleplaying.com is a vBulletin forum, and rpol is it's own thing. This is a PHPBB forum.

And yes, there are 4 or 5 games that haven't seen some action in a few weeks. I'm only going by the last post date on the main page.

What about a divider between the game genres?

Some of those games have special circumstances. I believe Spanky Taz's ACKS campaign and Third Kingdom's ACKS campaign folders are both being used to hold data for games, but the actual gaming is taking place elsewhere, for example. So they won't get updated regularly, but they are still being used.

Sounds good Toni. I would go with your suggestion plus Zhym's addition if possible but I agree the ultimate is to customise to see what you want.
Do you know if that kind of enhancement to the software is being worked on as it seems an obvious improvement?

Sorry for the late reply. I do not know if any such enhancements are in the plans. I think not, unfortunately.
